Quality, Objectivity, And Tone In Media Portrayals Of Care For Older Adults, Jennifer Van Loan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In response to the growing population of older adults who will need assistance to care for themselves, this research evaluates media coverage of care options for older adults presented in local newspapers, an informational resource used by baby boomers and older generations interested in planning for their futures and caring for their loved ones. Computer databases for four newspapers representing the Capital Region of New York State were scanned for keywords to identify articles about older adult care, then articles were reviewed to ensure they were relevant to older adult care. A quantitative content analysis was performed on the articles …

Factors Related To Recidivism Among Mentally Disordered Offenders : Differential Impact Of Historical And Dynamic Clinical Indicators Across Risk Level, Lori J. Torgersen Jan 2013

Factors Related To Recidivism Among Mentally Disordered Offenders : Differential Impact Of Historical And Dynamic Clinical Indicators Across Risk Level, Lori J. Torgersen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Understanding the factors related to recidivism among mentally disordered offenders is important so that criminal justice and mental health systems can prioritize resources to intervene with those most likely to reoffend by targeting factors that are most likely to reduce risk. While there is a sound body of literature identifying the predictors of recidivism among non-disordered adult offenders, the same inquiry in the case of mentally disordered offenders has been more equivocal.

Self-Esteem Among Migrant Children In China, Bo Zhou Jan 2013

Self-Esteem Among Migrant Children In China, Bo Zhou

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In 2010, there were over 35 million migrant children in China. Studies showed that rural-to-urban migrant children had significantly lower self-esteem than the urban non-migrant children, but the determinant factors have not been analyzed thoroughly. In this paper, I use data from the 2002 China Nine-City Survey of Migrant Children to examine what factors may affect migrant children's self-esteem. The results of data analysis showed that poor living conditions, anxiety about being discriminated against and exposure to neighborhood crime can lead to lower self-esteem among migrant children. My findings suggested that if the government gradually allows more migrants to enjoy …

As the proportion of both working women and dual-income families has increased worldwide over the last few decades, employees' value orientations related to their quality of life have changed considerably, in regard to both their work and personal lives. With these changes, a variety of work-life balance policies and practices have emerged to help employees manage their work and family responsibilities. In addition. policy discussions and public discourse regarding issues of work-life balance have expanded. In the Republic of Korea, the research context of this research, although there have been many efforts both from the legislature and government to promote …

The New Welfare State : Reconsidering The Welfare-Crime Nexus, Colin Gruner Jan 2013

The New Welfare State : Reconsidering The Welfare-Crime Nexus, Colin Gruner

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A sizeable body of literature has found that welfare reduces crime, but the majority of these studies have used data from before 1996. In 1996 the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) radically changed the welfare system of the United States. Control of welfare programs shifted from the federal government to the states and PRWORA increased the emphasis on getting people off welfare via the introduction of lifetime limits on the receipt of aid and mandatory participation in work programs for able-bodied recipients. Consistent with this emphasis, researchers have documented a precipitous drop in caseload sizes across the …

The Impact Of Childhood Residential Stability On Adult Homelessness And Mental Health, Joli Brown Jan 2013

The Impact Of Childhood Residential Stability On Adult Homelessness And Mental Health, Joli Brown

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Over the last 20 years, homeless families have increased dramatically in the United States. Literature on homelessness has traditionally focused on single men/adults with severe mental illness. Using data collected for a local mental health organization and social service agency providing trauma and case management services to homeless mothers with a history of trauma, my goal is to determine whether group home, foster care stays and episodes of homelessness prior to 18 years of age would increase the likelihood of respondents lifetime number of times homeless, number of traumatic events over one's lifetime and depression 30 days prior to the …

Stars Of The East And West : The Anglo-American Invention Of The Circassian Girl, Alexandra E. Mcdowall Jan 2013

Stars Of The East And West : The Anglo-American Invention Of The Circassian Girl, Alexandra E. Mcdowall

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The choices a society makes regarding their entertainment speak to their deeper desires, fears, and values. A uniquely nineteenth century freak show attraction known as "Circassian Girls" represented a tension in the changing world. More than an entertaining spectacle of a person from a far-flung corner of the world, Circassian Girls became constructed symbols of race, nationalism, class, and gender. Through their manufactured perfection, these performers became a caricature of white, middle-class womanhood. This paper compares the freak show performers with other descriptions of Circassian Girls through the nineteenth century, placing them into the context of perceptions of the East, …

Coercion, Persuasion, And Reflexivity In Major Counterinsurgency Wars, Stephen M. Pampinella Jan 2013

Coercion, Persuasion, And Reflexivity In Major Counterinsurgency Wars, Stephen M. Pampinella

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation examines the effectiveness of different counterinsurgency practices of states in 47 conflicts from 1945-2010. After discussing contemporary theories of counterinsurgency, it traces these theories to realist and liberal traditions of international relations to demonstrate how propose specific relationships with the civilian population as a means of ending social conflict. To evaluate these theories, I perform a Boolean analysis of counterinsurgency practices to determine which combinations of realist and liberal factors leads to counterinsurgent victory. Overall, I find that pure realist and mixed combinations are most likely to lead to victory, while pure liberal combinations fail to produce victory. …

The Acquisition Of Sociolinguistic Variation By Study Abroad Students : The Case Of American Students In Madrid, Kathryn Lee Ringer-Hilfinger

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The current investigation seeks to contribute to the emerging body of research on second language variation in Spanish. A range of dialect-specific variables is considered, both morphological and phonological. Learner acquisition of these variables is measured within a study abroad context through oral and written longitudinal data over the course of an 8-month period. Previous studies conducted in this area have considered pronoun use (Geeslin and Gudmestad 2008a; Salgado-Robles 2012) the use of /theta/ (Geeslin and Gudmestad 2008b; Willis et. al. 2009; Ringer-Hilfinger 2012; Knouse 2012), intonation strategies (Henriksen et al. 2010), and perfective past time reference (Geeslin et al. …

The Supreme Adventure : Brooklyn's Thrill-Kill Gang, And Mid Century Juvenile Justice, Mariah Adin Jan 2013

The Supreme Adventure : Brooklyn's Thrill-Kill Gang, And Mid Century Juvenile Justice, Mariah Adin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This project uses a microhistorical approach to explore themes of mid-twentieth-century juvenile delinquency, censorship and post-Holocaust American Jewish identity. At the study's center is the Brooklyn Thrill-Kill Gang--a group of four Jewish boys, ranging in age from fifteen to eighteen years old--who went on a crime spree of assault and murder in the summer of 1954. That the boys came from what contemporaries labeled as "good" homes (i.e. middle class, two-parent households) and were on a path of upward-mobility made their behavior a mystery to most juvenile delinquency theorists of the day, who typically understood delinquent behavior as stemming from …

The Design And Implementation Of An Online Professional Development Program For Future Online Educators : A Case Study, Joy Quah Jan 2013

The Design And Implementation Of An Online Professional Development Program For Future Online Educators : A Case Study, Joy Quah

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study examines the practices of an instructor who designed and instantiated an online professional development program to foster expertise in online instructional design. The main purpose of this study is to investigate how her application of technological affordances may inform a re-examination of Cognitive Apprenticeship (Collins, Brown, & Newman, 1989). This theory was formulated to guide the design and research of a workshop-based learning environment that support students in thinking, problem-solving and accomplishing tasks like practitioners in the field. Since the theory was proposed prior to the advent of online teaching and learning, there is a need to reconsider …

Capital Punishment In The Lone Star State : A County-Level Analysis Of Contextual Effects On Sentencing, Jennifer Lynn Owens Jan 2013

Capital Punishment In The Lone Star State : A County-Level Analysis Of Contextual Effects On Sentencing, Jennifer Lynn Owens

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In its landmark decision, Furman v. Georgia (1972), the Supreme Court held all existing death penalty statutes unconstitutional, largely due to the arbitrary nature of the capital sentencing processes that resulted from them. In response to the Furman decision, several states revised their death penalty statutes to address the Court's concerns. Although the Court upheld the newly-drafted statutes in Gregg v. Georgia (1976) and its companion cases, subsequently reinstating the death penalty, intrastate variation in death sentencing suggests that the death penalty may continue to be applied in an arbitrary and capricious manner inconsistent with the Eighth Amendment. This dissertation …

Cultural Omnivores In Context : An Examination Of Neighborhood Effects On Cultural Taste, Alexander Mcclung Jan 2013

Cultural Omnivores In Context : An Examination Of Neighborhood Effects On Cultural Taste, Alexander Mcclung

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

After a review of the "cultural omnivore" debate in sociology, the following thesis proposes an examination of how place "matters" for cultural taste. The Anglophone response to Bourdieu's (1984) Distinction that the U.S. elite forgo highbrow snobbism for wide-ranging "omnivore" cultural taste contains several assumptions about culture and its relationship to socioeconomic mobility. These responses, collectively known here as the "omnivore debate" are critiqued on the basis that they pay inadequate attention to the contexts surrounding cultural taste. But it is knowledge of context that is required to understand how taste might be related to socioeconomic mobility. In fact, none …

Farmers On The Edge : A Study Of Late-Preclassic Maya Houses And Rejolladas At The Site Of Xuenkal, Yucatan, Mexico, Justin Patrick Lowry Jan 2013

Farmers On The Edge : A Study Of Late-Preclassic Maya Houses And Rejolladas At The Site Of Xuenkal, Yucatan, Mexico, Justin Patrick Lowry

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Ancient economies are dominated by the production of food crops. At Xuenkal there is a good case to study how economies developed in the northern Maya lowlands between the late Preclassic Period and the Early Classic Period. Xuenkal is located in a unique zone of the Yucatan peninsula where the numerous karst sinks were appropriated and controlled by the earliest agriculturalists or horticulturalists. This dissertation will include arguments for both the development of complexity in this region and how this complexity was directly affected by the presence and cultivation of these constricted resource areas. Using the principle of first occupation …

This research is an experimental simulation that explores the interrater reliability of a multi-factor sex offender risk classification system, specifically, the system outlined by the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA). In Study 1, professionals holding the terminal degree in their field and qualified for appointment to the Sex Offender Registry Board administered the Massachusetts Classification Worksheet to four sex offender cases. Study 2 involved the use of master's level participants (including professionals with master's degrees and graduate student participants) to administer the Massachusetts Classification Worksheet to the same four sex offender cases. Participants assessed the offenders' risk as either …

The Most Interesting Place : The Eastern Mediterranean And American Cultural Knowledge, Gregory Wiedeman Jan 2013

The Most Interesting Place : The Eastern Mediterranean And American Cultural Knowledge, Gregory Wiedeman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study addresses how nineteenth-century Americans perceived the lands of the Eastern Mediterranean. The project rests upon a detailed examination of American primary school geography textbooks that enjoyed widespread circulation during the century. The lack of an effective education apparatus in the period rendered American students incredibly reliant on their textbooks. These texts reflect the general common knowledge of the region shared by most educated Americans. Additionally, this study draws support from a thorough analysis of travel accounts that were extraordinarily popular during the period. These works offered Americans a chance to explore vicariously the most interesting lands of the …

Best Practices For Drug Court: How Drug Court Judges Influence Positive Outcomes, Karen Lynn Stimler Jan 2013

Best Practices For Drug Court: How Drug Court Judges Influence Positive Outcomes, Karen Lynn Stimler

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Drug courts are an important component in the criminal justice system directed toward efforts of rehabilitation of drug and alcohol addiction that lessens the rate of recidivism. Drug court is the alternative to incarceration and traditional addiction treatment. Drug court has been characterized as therapeutic adjudication. Using "Best Practices," drug courts staffed by a judge, court team, and community partners individualize treatment protocols to motivate participant compliance and lessen the impact of the social milieu that impacts his or her recovery. Drug courts have been deemed successful in part due to the role of the judge. This research sought to …

Safe And Smart Savings Products For Vulnerable Adolescent Girls In Kenya And Uganda: Evaluation Report, Karen Austrian, Eunice N. Muthengi Jan 2013

Safe And Smart Savings Products For Vulnerable Adolescent Girls In Kenya And Uganda: Evaluation Report, Karen Austrian, Eunice N. Muthengi

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The decision to engage in the development of girl-friendly savings accounts was made as part of the Population Council’s work with adolescent girls in Kenya. In June 2008 the Council and MicroSave Consulting started the Safe and Smart Savings Products for Vulnerable Adolescent Girls. Based on the market research and prior experience with developing programs for adolescent girls, a product concept for a group-based savings account was developed, in which the group model was used to address the legal constraints of minors not being able to hold individual accounts. In Kenya and Uganda, two financial institutions were identified, and the …

Re-Placing Sprawl: Mapping Place In An American Suburb, Ryan M. Cooper Jan 2013

Re-Placing Sprawl: Mapping Place In An American Suburb, Ryan M. Cooper

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

In the post-World War II era land development in the United States has largely been focused on the expansion away from urban centers and out into the surrounding suburbs. While the development of suburbs began with utopian ideals of spiritual wholeness, their actual manifestation on the American landscape has been subject to harsh critiques about their long-term economic and environmental feasibility, fostering of social alienation, and general placelessness. In this thesis I address the criticism of suburbs as placeless, asking ―What are the particular practices of place-making in North American suburbs?‖ Examining interviews, cognitive map surveys, participant observation, archival materials, …
