Employee Determinants To Share Knowledge In A Us Federal Government Environment, Kenneth White Jan 2013

Employee Determinants To Share Knowledge In A Us Federal Government Environment, Kenneth White

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Although the literature indicates that knowledge sharing (KS) research is prevalent in the private sector, there is scant empirical research data about KS in the public sector. Moreover, organizations lack an understanding of employee KS behavior. This study investigated two research questions: First, how does the perceived importance of five determinants of KS behavior (organizational culture, workplace trust, incentives, management support, and technology) vary based upon the variables of job function, gender, and work category? Second, what is the relative importance of the five determinants of KS behavior to U.S. federal government employees? This descriptive study employed a Web-based survey …

College Students' Sexual Knowledge And Attitudes, Jean Claude Martin, Jennifer Y. Mak Jan 2013

College Students' Sexual Knowledge And Attitudes, Jean Claude Martin, Jennifer Y. Mak

Management Faculty Research

There is currently a controversy in this country about college students’ perceived sexual knowledge and attitude. The purpose of the study was to identify and examine: 1) students' sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, and students' main source of sexual knowledge; 2) the differences between sociodemographic variables of gender, age, and self-perceived sexual knowledge in relation to sexual knowledge and sexual attitude; and 3) the relationship between sexual knowledge and sexual attitude. Participants were college students (n=201) of a Mid-Atlantic university. The students achieved an average score of 83% on the sexual knowledge test with all (100%) students having either an ambivalent …

Best Practices For Implementing Trauma-Informed Care With Youth Who Are Homeless Or At- Risk Of Being Homeless, Ellen Morrow Jan 2013

Best Practices For Implementing Trauma-Informed Care With Youth Who Are Homeless Or At- Risk Of Being Homeless, Ellen Morrow

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Exposure to traumatic events during childhood can affect brain development, how someone reacts to stress, and what they may find threatening or unsafe. Trauma can be a precursor to the development of a range of psychopathology including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, personality distortions and psychosis (APA, 2000, Rose, Freeman & Proudlock, 2012). Left untreated trauma can also result in medical conditions later in life including heart disease, cancer, respiratory problems and social conditions such as homelessness, prostitution or delinquency (Steele & Malchiodi, 2012; WISQARS, 2010). Maschi and Schwalbe (2012) cite studies which estimate up to 93% of …

Students, Security, And Race, Jason P. Nance

UF Law Faculty Publications

In the wake of the terrible shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, our nation has turned its attention to school security. For example, several states have passed or are considering passing legislation that will provide new funding to schools for security equipment and law enforcement officers. Strict security measures in schools are certainly not new. In response to prior acts of school violence, many public schools for years have relied on metal detectors, random sweeps, locked gates, surveillance cameras, and law enforcement officers to promote school safety. Before policymakers and school officials invest more money in strict security measures, this Article provides …

Dreams Of Prosperity In America Met With Disillusionments And Despair For Eastern & Southern European Immigrants, Mayda C. Bosco Jan 2013

Dreams Of Prosperity In America Met With Disillusionments And Despair For Eastern & Southern European Immigrants, Mayda C. Bosco

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This paper will explore the challenges experienced by destitute Eastern and Southern Europeans after migrating to New York City during the late nineteenth century and into the earlier part of the twentieth century. Throughout their Americanization process, these newcomers confronted difficulties in reconciling old world norms with newfound liberties in the land of opportunity. Religion further complicated their lives in terms of tensions created between their belief systems - Orthodox Judaism and Roman Catholicism - pitted against the practices of the mainstream White Anglo Saxon Protestants. The backdrop of a thriving and consumerism environment in New York City ironically furthered …

The Liminality Of The Black Female “Freed” Slave In The Novels Of Morrison, Hurston, And Williams, Karen Ingram Jan 2013

The Liminality Of The Black Female “Freed” Slave In The Novels Of Morrison, Hurston, And Williams, Karen Ingram

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Arnold Van Gennep, a French ethnographer, explored the concept of ceremonies for ritual events in his text, The Rites of Passage. He examined societal processes whereby an individual moves from one socially constructed place to another — for example, a boy to a man with a Bar Mitzvah, or a girl to woman on her wedding night. This “passage” involves three phases: separation, transition, and reincorporation. Victor Turner, a British cultural anthropologist, takes van Gennep’s theory one step further and discusses the transition phase and how an individual can become stuck in the transitional stage: the liminal space. In his …

Gilbert Redux: The Interaction Of The Pregnancy Discrimination Act And The Amended Americans With Disabilities Act, Deborah Widiss Jan 2013

Gilbert Redux: The Interaction Of The Pregnancy Discrimination Act And The Amended Americans With Disabilities Act, Deborah Widiss

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Pregnancy — a health condition that only affects women — raises complicated questions regarding the interaction of employment policies addressing sex discrimination and those addressing disability. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA), enacted in 1978, mandates that employers “shall” treat pregnant employees “the same for all employment-related purposes” as other employees “similar in their ability or inability to work.” Despite the clarity of this language, some courts permit employers to treat pregnant employees less favorably than employees with other health conditions, so long as the employer does so pursuant to a “pregnancy-blind” policy such as accommodating only workplace injuries or disabilities …

Exposing Boundaries: Intersections Of Space, Time And The Body In Francesca Woodman's Photographs, Rachel Weisman Jan 2013

Exposing Boundaries: Intersections Of Space, Time And The Body In Francesca Woodman's Photographs, Rachel Weisman

Theses & ETDs

Scholarly representations of the artist Francesca Woodman often rely on framing her work within one fixed academic or artistic boundary. I argue that this in an ineffective way to approach Woodman's work, as it forces a rigid and clear set of divisions that I feel are intentionally askew in her photographs. This thesis aims to emphasize the intersections of artistic traditions and techniques used by Woodman, particularly in relation to photographic theory, as a means to expand and enrich the models conventionally used for understanding her body of work. The strength of Woodman's work is actualized through a multi-perspectival approach …

Science Blogging: Science Journalists Of The Internet, Allison Smith Jan 2013

Science Blogging: Science Journalists Of The Internet, Allison Smith

Theses & ETDs

With traditional science journalism being faded out from newspapers due to economic impacts, science blogging has become a new means for readers to access to easy-to-read science news translated from jargon-filled scholarly articles. Science bloggers can make a profession out of what they do, providing an alternative to science news written by people without any science background. The aim of this study was to determine how readers interact with blogs, what they find important about them, and what their general demographics were. Through the use of an IRB-approved survey, I gathered these data. I found that science blog readers are …

Disparate Times, Disparate Measures: Time Between Arrest, Conviction, And Execution As A Relevant Measure Of Modern Racial Bias, Alex Smith Jan 2013

Disparate Times, Disparate Measures: Time Between Arrest, Conviction, And Execution As A Relevant Measure Of Modern Racial Bias, Alex Smith

Theses & ETDs

This study looked at two time frames in the legal process: time between arrest and sentencing (referred to as "sentencing time") and time between sentencing and execution (referred to as "execution time") as variables relevant to racial biases in the courtroom. Using the Texas and Florida Department of Criminal Justice archives, executed offenders with similar case features were analyzed. In both Texas and Florida, political affiliation of the governor and response to capital punishment were related; offenders spent more time on death row when the governors were Republican than when they were Democrats. In Florida, racial minorities spent an average …

Addressing Diversity: The Construction Of Community Identifiers In The Devon Avenue Streetscape Plan, Madhuri Shukla Jan 2013

Addressing Diversity: The Construction Of Community Identifiers In The Devon Avenue Streetscape Plan, Madhuri Shukla

Theses & ETDs

There is a difference between the way ethnic communities develop an identity through lived experience, and the explicit physical representation of that identity in public place-making projects. This research examines the intersection of neighborhood identity politics, urban planning/design/art, and diversity, with a focus on. Through my experience as a participant observer on the design team of the Devon Avenue Streetscape Plan, I explore how place-making initiatives can address ethnic diversity in the creation of community identifiers. Using the tension between use value and exchange value, I consider the potential for gentrification as a result of highlighting neighborhood distinctness. I propose …

A Consequential Geography: Complex Social Dimensions Of Space And Power In South Africa, Wenonah Venter Jan 2013

A Consequential Geography: Complex Social Dimensions Of Space And Power In South Africa, Wenonah Venter

Theses & ETDs

This historical and geographical analysis of South Africa aims to determine the extent to which the history of segregation and apartheid has affected the social and spatial form of the country's urban spaces. The history of segregation and apartheid in South Africa has left a distinct social and spatial form that, I argue, have consequential effects on the social equity of the nation's cities today. The apartheid is shown to be a social and spatial regime that used a determined spatiality to maintain hegemonic power over the nation. Additionally, I trace an Afrikaner nationalism from the early Dutch settlement of …

Religious Freedom, Animal Sacrifice, And Community Maintenance: From Hialeah To The United States Supreme Court, Lewis Winstanley Jan 2013

Religious Freedom, Animal Sacrifice, And Community Maintenance: From Hialeah To The United States Supreme Court, Lewis Winstanley

Theses & ETDs

This objective of this thesis is to challenge the idea that secularization leads to a decline in religious authority through a content analysis of the United States Supreme Court case, Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye, Inc. v. City of Hialeah. I build my argument against Max Weber's concern with expanding structures of rationality and Winnifred Fallers Sullivan's claim that in the field of US law, religious freedom is impossible. As an example of resistance to secularization, I examined the construction of the church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye. I contextualize the church's emergence in a history of Yoruban culture …

Class Ceilings: Filming An Elite Salvadoran Family, Alexander Wilson Jan 2013

Class Ceilings: Filming An Elite Salvadoran Family, Alexander Wilson

Theses & ETDs

In the opening months of 2012, I visited El Salvador to conduct visual ethnographic fieldwork with my extended family, a group of political and economic elites. The study used hand-held digital video technology and a combination of visual and symbolic anthropological theory to frame and analyze the production of political and personal knowledge. The thesis and Spanish-language anthropological documentary film, Que mas, mi nino?, explore intersecting points of class and memory within an elite Latin American family to produce a living account of community identity. By tracing narratives and experiences, I argue that history is a malleable social construction that …

Yielding To The Octopus An Environmental History Of Agriculture, Imperialism, And Landlessness In Guatemala, Sophia Zimmerman Jan 2013

Yielding To The Octopus An Environmental History Of Agriculture, Imperialism, And Landlessness In Guatemala, Sophia Zimmerman

Theses & ETDs

Guatemala is home to some of the most diverse and ecologically significant ecosystems in Central America. Recently, the degrading rainforests and dramatic biodiversity loss has received attention from foreign conservation programs. These circumstances are complex and the stakeholder relationships, whether ecological or human, are often extremely vulnerable. Guatemala's colonial and liberal history, analyzed from an ecological perspective, illuminates aspects of the country's development and produce a more holistic understanding of current political, social, as well as environmental circumstances. Specific aspects of the country's development, such as the role of agriculture, private industry, and land dispossession, are vital to addressing these …

Reproducing Inequality?: A Comparative Analysis Of Social Relations In Non-Profit Organizations, Mariana Zapata Jan 2013

Reproducing Inequality?: A Comparative Analysis Of Social Relations In Non-Profit Organizations, Mariana Zapata

Theses & ETDs

This research project seeks to explore whether the structure of non-profit organizations enables or inhibits the reproduction of social hierarchies within the client-staff relationship. I study two structurally different organizations operating with similar constituents in Florida: a service-based organization with a defined hierarchy, and a grassroots organization with a participatory approach. Through in-depth interviews with clients and staff members, I sought to gain insight into the processes of interaction, empowerment, and expression that existed within both organizations. I found that, though both organizations reproduced social hierarchies, their structure impacted the extent to and the way in which these hierarchies were …

Gender Discrimination, Economic Segregation And Comparable Worth: Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of Policies Targeting The Gender Wage Gap In The United States, Peter Wolfe Jan 2013

Gender Discrimination, Economic Segregation And Comparable Worth: Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of Policies Targeting The Gender Wage Gap In The United States, Peter Wolfe

Theses & ETDs

In recent years, the persistence of the gender wage gap in the United States has been used as a justification to pass legislation strengthening legal protections for victims of gender discrimination in the workplace. Opponents of these legislative initiatives argue that our current legal protections against gender discrimination in the workplace are strong enough, that the gender wage gap in the United States is no longer caused by discrimination, and that the persistence of the gender wage gap is caused by forces other than discrimination. This thesis takes the position that gender based discrimination is still contributing to the gender …

Rurality And Intimate Partner Homicide: Exploring The Relationship Between Place, Social Structure, And Femicide In North Carolina, Amelia Kirkland Jan 2013

Rurality And Intimate Partner Homicide: Exploring The Relationship Between Place, Social Structure, And Femicide In North Carolina, Amelia Kirkland

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A developing body of research within the fields of criminology and rural sociology has emphasized the importance of considering geographic place in the study of interpersonal violence, and domestic violence in particular. Exploring how place is related to domestic violence lends itself to considerations of geographic variation in socio-structural conditions. A handful of studies since the 1980s have explored structural correlates of intimate abuse largely rooted in one of two theoretical contexts: social disorganization or gender inequality/patriarchy. However, knowledge regarding the relationship between place, social structure, and specific types of violence remains limited. The present study is intended as an …

The Impact Of Organizations' Collaboration Strategies And Alliance Network Positions On Invention Performance, Fethullah Caliskan Jan 2013

The Impact Of Organizations' Collaboration Strategies And Alliance Network Positions On Invention Performance, Fethullah Caliskan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the impact of organizations' collaboration strategies and network positional variables on invention performance. Organizations, particularly those pursuing a differentiation strategy, are motivated to introduce novel products and services in order to remain competitive. Thus, two questions of interest to such organizations regarding the network dynamics of the invention process are: 1) What kind of strategies allow them to attain superior invention results? 2) What is the most advantageous structural positioning in a collaborative network of innovators? Three independent studies attempt to find answers to these questions by using three complementary study approaches.

In the first study, in …

Assessing The Relationship Between Hotspots Of Lead And Hotspots Of Crime, Kimberly L. Barrett Jan 2013

Assessing The Relationship Between Hotspots Of Lead And Hotspots Of Crime, Kimberly L. Barrett

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Numerous medical and environmental toxicology studies have established a link between lead (Pb) exposure, crime, and delinquency. In human environments, lead pollution- like crime- is unequally distributed, creating lead hot spots. In spite of this, studies of crime hotspots have routinely focused on traditional sociological predictors of crime, leaving environmental predictors of crime like lead and other neurotoxins relatively unaddressed. This study attends to this gap in the literature by asking a very straightforward research question: Is there a relationship between hotspots of lead and hotspots of crime? Furthermore, what is the nature and extent of this relationship? Lastly, is …

Self-Control, Attitudinal Beliefs, And White-Collar Crime Intentions, Melissa Anne Lugo Jan 2013

Self-Control, Attitudinal Beliefs, And White-Collar Crime Intentions, Melissa Anne Lugo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gottfredson and Hirschi's general theory of crime (1990) has received a great deal of empirical examination in the criminology, yet the application of this theory to white-collar crime offenders has not received a great deal of attention. Research that has been conducted in the realm of white-collar crime has yielded mixed support for low self-control in explaining such offenses (Simpson and Piquero, 2002; Reed and Yeager, 1996; Langton et al., 2006; Blickle, 2006). The current study seeks to supplement the literature by focusing not simply on the direct causal links between self-control and white-collar offending, but also exploring how attitudes …

A Life-Course Approach To Sexual Offending: Examining The Continuity Of Juvenile Sexual Offending Into Adulthood And Subsequent Patterns Of Recidivism, Maude Beaudry-Cyr Jan 2013

A Life-Course Approach To Sexual Offending: Examining The Continuity Of Juvenile Sexual Offending Into Adulthood And Subsequent Patterns Of Recidivism, Maude Beaudry-Cyr

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Current sex offending legislation and public opinion present an image of sexual offenders as specialized predators who are likely to exhibit continued sexually deviant behavior over the life-course. Although sex offending continuity and post-release recidivism has been independently assessed in prior research, the potential link between sex offending continuity and post-release recidivism has yet to be investigated. Using data collected on random samples of sex offenders from a Northeastern state, the present study examines the predictability of sex offender continuity and its potential linkages with general and sex recidivism, as well as identifying distinguishable risk factors related to these outcomes. …
