Cross Cultural Pragmatics: A Study Of Apology Speech Acts By Turkish Speakers, American English Speakers And Advance Nonnative Speakers Of English In Turkey, Mehmet Aydin
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The study aims to identify and compare apology strategies used in Turkish, American English, and advanced non-native speakers of English in Turkey. In order to identify and compare the norms of apologizing in Turkish, English, and non-native English speakers in Turkey, apologies given to the same situations from these three different groups of participants were analyzed. The results from the Native Speakers of Turkish (NST) and Native Speakers of English (NSE) groups were used to identify the norms of apologies in these languages. Then, NNSE participants' responses were compared to the norms to be able to identify transfers from L1 …
An Investigation Of Online Unproctored Testing And Cheating Motivations Using Equity Theory And Theory Of Planned Behavior, Valerie Nicole Brophy
An Investigation Of Online Unproctored Testing And Cheating Motivations Using Equity Theory And Theory Of Planned Behavior, Valerie Nicole Brophy
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The prominence of unproctored online testing in selection has caused researchers and practitioners to turn their attention to the possibility of cheating and methods of detecting and decreasing it. Past research has shown that separately both equity theory and theory of planned behavior can predict maleficent behaviors. This study combines both of these theories--with equity theory as an operationalization of the precedents of theory of planned behavior--in attempt to predict past cheating behaviors. The present study aims to give selection professionals a framework by which to understand the motivations behind cheating on pre-employment tests. Equity sensitivity findings were limited due …

Restorative Justice To Supplement Deterrence-Based Punishment: An Empirical Study And Theoretical Reconceptualization Of The Epa's Power Plant Enforcement Initiative, 2000-2011, Michael L. Rustad, Thomas H. Koenig, Erica R. Ferreira

From the late 1970s to the end of the 1990s, electricity producers modified and operated coal-fired power plants in violation of the Environment Protection Agency’s (EPA) permitting requirements, creating widespread air quality degradation. The EPA’s policy of lax oversight ended in 1999 when it launched a large, coordinated enforcement effort. The 2012 Republican presidential candidates all denounced this more vigilant EPA as engaging in economic terrorism through “sue and settle” tactics that amount to backdoor regulation. This article evaluates federal environmental enforcement, drawing upon objective data from our empirical study of EPA permitting violation settlements for coal-fired power plants entered …

I first heard about a tragedy in Tucson, not from major television news networks, but from a direct message sent by a politically-active friend who was attending the political gathering where a mass shooting took place, including the shooting of an Arizona congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords. While the television news sputtered around trying to offer details (initially wrongly claiming that she was dead, likely from pressure to be the first to report big news), I found myself reading Google News, piecing together Facebook posts, e-mailing friends and reading Twitter updates.
Believing In The Gift: A Case Of Successful Relationships Of Exchange In The Colombian Amazon, Carlos D. Londoño Sulkin
Believing In The Gift: A Case Of Successful Relationships Of Exchange In The Colombian Amazon, Carlos D. Londoño Sulkin
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
Since the late 70’s, the Colombian anthropologist Juan Alvaro Echeverri has logged more than five years in Uitoto and closely related communities in the Colombian Amazon. His relationships with individuals there have been long-lived and surprisingly successful, in contrast with the often-noted disappointment of many philanthropically oriented outsiders—NGO agents, anthropologists, missionaries, government personnel—who come to find ‘their Indians’ to be too materialistic and demanding, and of the Indians who cease to find these would-be philanthropists generous, desirable, or even interesting interlocutors. This essay, meant to be both an ethnographic and theoretical exposition on the forms and implications of substance exchange …

LSU AgCenter Research Reports
This is the fifth in a series of reviews about the experiences of various racial and ethnic groups in the Gulf of Mexico region. This one focuses on the experiences of Croatians. Although relatively small in number, Croatians have had considerable influence in the southeastern United States, particularly in the economic life of southern Louisiana. Commonly known to have transformed and substantially grown the oyster industry, Croatians also have a complex history and culture.

Lived Experiences Of Graduate Students Who Are The Mothers Of Young Children, Audrey M. Harrington
Lived Experiences Of Graduate Students Who Are The Mothers Of Young Children, Audrey M. Harrington
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this qualitative study, the experiences of graduate students who were also the mothers of preschool children were explored through the use of narrative interviews and autoethnographic reflections on personal experience. The study examines the various self-perceived identity dimensions of three graduate student mothers (through a series of interviews) and the researcher (via autoethnographic writings). Analysis of the data identified two superordinate themes: a) the identification of systems of support and role models (including presence and absence of said supports) and b) a negotiation of gendered social expectations as the students navigated the context of graduate school. Recommendations include the …

Macintyre And The Emotivists, James E. Mahon
Macintyre And The Emotivists, James E. Mahon
Publications and Research
This chapter both explains the origins of emotivism in C. K. Ogden and I. A. Richards, R. B. Braithwaite, Austin Duncan-Jones, A. J. Ayer and Charles Stevenson (along with the endorsement by Frank P. Ramsey, and the summary of C. D. Broad), and looks at Alasdair MacIntyre's criticisms of emotivism as the inevitable result of Moore's attack on naturalistic ethics and his ushering in the fact/value distinction, which was a historical product of the Enlightenment.
What Kind Of Family Is Needed For ‘Domestic Church’? A Mystagogy Of The Family, Jana Marguerite Bennett
What Kind Of Family Is Needed For ‘Domestic Church’? A Mystagogy Of The Family, Jana Marguerite Bennett
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Is there an ideal Christian family, or indeed, is the term "family" even the best way to think about Christian life together, especially in relation to the term "domestic church"? When it comes to marriage and family, scholars writing about the concept of "domestic church" often do one of the following: (1) focus on Gen 1 and 2 as putting forth an ideal nuclear family; or (2) make family out to be a redeeming or eschatological vision on its own, in place of Jesus Christ. This is not a conservative or liberal problem, for people from across the spectrum make …

Ideas have consequences—for good or bad. The apostle Paul, in his letter to a group of Romans, stated that the metaphysical world could be known to humanity (Rom 1:18ff). Over 1,800 years later, Emanuel Kant, a German philosopher, challenged this view of the metaphysical world; that is, Kant claimed that God could not be known, and western Christian philosophy has scrambled ever since to make sense of the two.1 On a similar scale, Howard Gardner, professor at Harvard University, challenged the prevailing view of intelligence in 1983 with his book Frames of Mind, stating that there were a number of …

Psychology: Faculty Publications
This chapter describes a multiyear professional development effort undertaken by a learning and teaching center at a liberal arts college. As part of its founding mandate, the center helps faculty improve teaching by paying attention to the current literature about how people learn. This core commitment of our center is pursued through support of a year‐long faculty seminar. Now in its fourth year, the seminar has had a significant impact on its faculty participants and their thinking about teaching and learning. Moreover, the seminar has seeded a number of teaching and assessment initiatives at the college.
