A Developmental Approach To Civility And Bystander Intervention, Jennifer Q. Mccary Jan 2013

A Developmental Approach To Civility And Bystander Intervention, Jennifer Q. Mccary

College Life Publications

The students of color in your classroom experience discrimination every day, in small and large ways. They don’t often see themselves represented in their textbooks, and encounter hostility in school, and outside. For them race is a constant reality, and an issue they need, and want, to discuss. Failure to do so can inhibit their academic performance.

Failure to discuss race prevents White students from getting a real, critical and deep understanding of our society and their place in it. It is essential for the well-being of all students that they learn to have constructive conversations about the history of …

早期 '地' 和 '土'之观 (Concepts Of Earth And Land In Early Chinese Texts), Deborah A. Sommer (司馬黛蘭) Jan 2013

早期 '地' 和 '土'之观 (Concepts Of Earth And Land In Early Chinese Texts), Deborah A. Sommer (司馬黛蘭)

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Many studies have explored conceptualizations of heaven (tian 天) in early Chinese thought, but few if any have explored understandings of heaven's later cosmological counterpart, earth (di 地). This article examines Chinese understandings of earth and land (tu 土) in pre-Qin 先秦sources. In ancient texts such as the Book of Odes (Shi jing詩經) and Book of Documents (Shang shu尚書), the earth is not yet the paired counterpart to heaven that it will become in later Warring States (fifth-third centuries BCE) texts. Older works often depict earth and land as passive recipients of heaven's …

Welfare Incentives And Interstate Migration: An Analysis Of The Migration Decisions Of Poor, Single Mothers, John P. Weis

Gettysburg Economic Review

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of welfare incentives in the decision to move for poor, single mothers. Using micro-level data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and other sources, I develop an econometric model that estimates the influence of state welfare benefits on the interstate migration decisions of poor, single mothers, whether that be moving from states with low benefits or to states with high benefits. This study builds upon previous literature concerning interstate migration by considering new methodological approaches and theoretical models. Ultimately, the evidence suggests that while the welfare benefits offered …

Basic Desert And Reactive Emotions, Zac Cogley Jan 2013

Basic Desert And Reactive Emotions, Zac Cogley

Publication

It is common for philosophers to invoke the idea that someone deserves an emotion like anger because she has done something morally wrong. While appeals to this notion of desert are common in the literature, such references aren’t thoroughly examined. For example, what do we mean when we say that someone deserves anger because she wronged us? This question is important because it is common for one philosopher to claim that someone deserves anger for a moral wrong while another denies it. Without an account of desert claims it is difficult to evaluate which position is more plausible.

We can …

Has Supply Chain Management Lost Its Relevance?, Natalie Descheres Jan 2013

Has Supply Chain Management Lost Its Relevance?, Natalie Descheres

Books/Book chapters

The context of business has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. The definition of need satisfaction, the shift from “dot to web” competition and the embedding of the organisation into a wider political and societal environment has transformed SCM contributions and the meaning of work for employees. Interdependence must evolve from the do-it-alone approach and yet the ashes are not proving fertile ground. In many ways, traditional models of management have not kept up with the changes and are taken aback by the complexity that surrounds us. Complexity is however not a feature of our world, but one of …

Ethical Lawyering In A Global Community, Trevor C. W. Farrow Jan 2013

Ethical Lawyering In A Global Community, Trevor C. W. Farrow

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

The pressures and opportunities of globalization have dramatically changed the nature of legal practice. How and why we practice law? For whom and whose benefit? In what contexts? And on what terms? The answers to these questions are continuously changing as a result of current global trends. The communities served by lawyers, the practice contexts in which they work and the issues that they face are increasingly diverse, complex, transnational and global in character. All of these challenges demand new competencies and raise a host of new issues about ethics and professionalism. As a threshold matter, more and more lawyers …

Transnational Private Regulatory Governance: Ambiguities Of Public Authority And Private Power, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2013

Transnational Private Regulatory Governance: Ambiguities Of Public Authority And Private Power, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

The paper focuses on the arguments scholars have been giving in supporting or in rejecting the thesis of an 'autonomous transnational legal order'. Focusing on the example of the 'law merchant' (lex mercatoria), the paper aims at tracing the models of law and, more comprehensively, of the socio-economical as well as the legal-political order that work in the background of the lex mercatoria debate. It is from such a perspective, that it becomes possible to recognize parallels in the national as well as transnational debates around normative (ideological and political) justifications as well as attacks on allegedly 'free markets', regulatory …

The Politics Of Relevance: Law, Translation And Alternative Knowledges, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2013

The Politics Of Relevance: Law, Translation And Alternative Knowledges, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

In this article, I want to suggest that there is a significant difference between the current interest of law in sociology (anthropology, geography) and the earlier instance of legal sociology. Whereas historically earlier stances responded, in no small degree, to legal positivism and, eventually, to both technological and societal change, the current social scientific engagement by lawyers appears driven by a differently articulated concern, even anxiety, about the viability of legal analytical, conceptual and semantic tools in a changed, transnational context. With the shift of law’s bearings from the nation-state to globalization’s strange land, law’s need to learn anew and …

Sabbatical Report, Monserrat Oliveras-Heras Jan 2013

Sabbatical Report, Monserrat Oliveras-Heras

Sabbaticals

My proposal was designed both to enhance my own qualifications to teach the courses on Latin American Cultures and Civilizations and the Latin American literature course as well as to finally finish a project and an idea first conceived during my graduate work at the University of Illinois. It involved both academic and field research. First, I intended to read a selection of fictional and historical books on the subject of the Spanish Conquest of Chile and to compare their contents. Secondly, I intended to travel to Chile and Argentina with the objective of contacting people related to the indigenous …
