The Value Of Midterm Student Feedback In Cross-Disciplinary Graduate Programs, G.L.A. Harris, Dannelle D. Stevens Jan 2013

The Value Of Midterm Student Feedback In Cross-Disciplinary Graduate Programs, G.L.A. Harris, Dannelle D. Stevens

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

End-of-course student evaluations are frequently used to evaluate university faculty teaching. However, employing midterm student feedback has been found to be instrumental in informing faculty about instructional quality and improving student learning outcomes. This study examined and compared the effects on classroom instruction of using a midterm student feedback (MSF) survey in the graduate courses of two faculty, an untenured professor in public administration and a full professor in education. The researchers gathered data from 122 students over two years for three courses in 6 classes—4 in public administration, 2 in education. Results indicate that midterm student feedback offered insight …

Eating Soup With A Spoon: The U.S. Army As A "Learning Organization" In The Vietnam War, Gregory A. Daddis Jan 2013

Eating Soup With A Spoon: The U.S. Army As A "Learning Organization" In The Vietnam War, Gregory A. Daddis

History Faculty Articles and Research

Standard Vietnam War narratives often argue that the U.S. Army lost the war because it failed to learn and adapt to the conditions of an unconventional conflict. Based on a reappraisal of learning processes rather than on the outcome of the war, this essay argues that as an organization, the U.S. Army did learn and adapt in Vietnam; however, that learning was not sufficient, in itself, to preserve a South Vietnam in the throes of a powerful nationalist upheaval. A reexamination of the Army's strategic approach, operational experiences, and organizational changes reveals that significant learning did occur during the Vietnam …

Understanding The Co-Evolution Of Institutions, Technology, And Organizations: The Enactment Of The State Government Portal Of Puebla., Luis F. Luna-Reyes, J. Ramon Gil-Garcia

Center for Technology in Government

Proceedings of the 14th Annual International Conference on Digital Government Research (dg.o2013), Mon, 17 Jun 2013.Until recently, researchers and practitioners around the world thought that information technologies could by themselves transform government organizations. However, current studies show that there are complex relationships between information technologies, organizations, and institutions. This paper presents a preliminary theory of the co-evolution of organizational networks, institutional frameworks and technology in the development of state government portals. The theoryuses the grammars of system dynamics and builds upon institutional approaches to understand interactions among all these factors in the development of information and communication technologies in government. …

Discourses Of Whiteness: White Students At Catholic Women’S Colleges (Dis)Engaging Race, Rebecca Ropers-Huilman, Kelly T. Winters, Kathryn A. E. Enke Jan 2013

Discourses Of Whiteness: White Students At Catholic Women’S Colleges (Dis)Engaging Race, Rebecca Ropers-Huilman, Kelly T. Winters, Kathryn A. E. Enke

Administration Publications

To better understand how White college women understand and are influenced by whiteness, we discursively analyzed data from interviews and focus groups with 25 White seniors at two Catholic women’s colleges. Findings suggest that participants understood whiteness through discourses of insignificance, nominal difference, responsibility, and transformation and that these understandings affected students’ college experiences and envisioned futures.

Gender, Spirituality, And Community Engagement: Complexities For Students At Catholic Women’S Colleges, Kathryn A. E. Enke, Kelly T. Winters

Administration Publications

In this research, we explored the ways that junior and senior students at two Catholic women’s colleges in the Midwestern United States understand community engagement, and we examined how they came to know and understand their gender and spiritual identities in relation to their engagement activities. Participants seemed to draw on both an ethic of care and an ethic of justice (Gilligan, 1982) when framing their motivations for doing community engagement work. The findings enhance what is "known" about how students experience and make meaning from structured programs that encourage community engagement.

Anatomy Of The 3d Innovation Production With The Cobb-Douglas Specification, Quan Hoang Vuong, Nancy K. Napier Jan 2013

Anatomy Of The 3d Innovation Production With The Cobb-Douglas Specification, Quan Hoang Vuong, Nancy K. Napier

International Business Program

This paper focuses on verifying the relevance of two theoretical propositions and related empirical investigation about the relationship between creativity and entrepreneurship. It draws upon a creativity process that considers three “dimensions” or “disciplines” (3D) critical for creative organizations—within discipline expertise, out of discipline knowledge, and a disciplined creative process. The paper first explores the Cobb-Douglas production function as a relevant tool for modeling the 3D creative process. The next part discusses the 3D process as a production function, which is modeled following the well-known Cobb-Douglas specification. Last, the paper offers implications for future research on disciplined creativity/innovation as a …

Comparing Two-Year Community College And Four-Year University Student Social And Behavioral Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Factors, Oswald M. Attin Jan 2013

Comparing Two-Year Community College And Four-Year University Student Social And Behavioral Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Factors, Oswald M. Attin

Faculty Dissertations

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) could cause ectopic, cervical cancer, infertility, and organ damage to the heart, kidneys, and brain. This study compared several behavioral risk factors of STIs (condom use, number of sexual partners, type of sex (anal or vaginal) and drinking habits) between two distinct educational settings and their association with socioeconomic risk factors such as low income and parent’s lower level of education that are known to increase the incidence of STIs among college-aged students. This study was based on the precautionary-health-behavior model, where individuals act regardless of consequences, and the health-behavior-change model, where individual behaviors either increase …

The Impact Of Inter-Intra Clan Conflict On Women In Northern Israel's Patriarchal Arab Community, And The Impact Of Such Women On The Process And Outcome Of The Sulha (Settlement) Dispute Resolution Process, Doron Pely Jan 2013

The Impact Of Inter-Intra Clan Conflict On Women In Northern Israel's Patriarchal Arab Community, And The Impact Of Such Women On The Process And Outcome Of The Sulha (Settlement) Dispute Resolution Process, Doron Pely

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Inter-clan conflicts within Northern Israel's Arab community may pit dozens, hundreds, sometimes thousands of people against each other in revenge and counter-revenge cycles that can take years to resolve. Because disputants' clans often live in close proximity to each other, third party interveners- Sulha (Settlement) Makers, mitigate against possible revenge attacks, sometimes command the extended family of the perceived perpetrator to leave their homes and move to another village or town. This exile (tarhil in Arabic) often impacts dozens of family members (mostly women and children), and can extend years, sometimes decades. Such enforced exile has a severe impact on …

Assessing Ghana's Contemporary Tourism Development Experience, Kwaku Adutwum Boakye, Ferdinand Otibo, Foster Frempong Jan 2013

Assessing Ghana's Contemporary Tourism Development Experience, Kwaku Adutwum Boakye, Ferdinand Otibo, Foster Frempong

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

The re-emerging acceptance of tourism as a pathway to development has culminated in widespread adoption of the trade by many poor countries. Ghana is one such country and, over the past three decades, has sought to use tourism as means of diversifying its econ-omy. The substantial amounts invested in tourism by the government make it imperative to continually evaluate tourism performance and outcomes as a tool for socio-economic development. Yet, to date, very few studies have placed Ghana’s tourism experience un-der the spotlight. This paper focuses on how the trade has evolved into a major economic activity. It assesses the …

A Street Child's Revolt Against Her Mother And Society: Lessons From Amma Darko's Faceless, Philomena Yeboah Ama Okyeso Jan 2013

A Street Child's Revolt Against Her Mother And Society: Lessons From Amma Darko's Faceless, Philomena Yeboah Ama Okyeso

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

The writings of Amma Darko rank among Africa’s great literature. In Faceless, Amma Darko uses conflicts that bedevil mother-daughter bonds to address larger issues such as streetism, patriarchy, government indifference, irresponsible parenting, and inefficiency in the police service. Faceless may appear to be primarily an investigation of the causes, effects, and solutions of streetism, yet it also has important things to say about both the destructive and regenerative potentials of mothers. The benefits of male–female collabo-ration in addressing developmental challenges are another topic that has acquired consid-erable space in this novel. It is these issues/topics that this study explores and …
