Every time a new season of the Bachelorette starts, I tell myself that I won’t watch this season—that I won’t give in to the trashiness and the petty drama which is the Bachelor. But I can’t help it. Season after season I’m hooked and 17 seasons later… here I am. [excerpt]
Goodbye To The Lecture: Embracing Interactive Learning Techniques, Stephen Newburg
Goodbye To The Lecture: Embracing Interactive Learning Techniques, Stephen Newburg
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
This article addresses many factors on the frontier of improved effectiveness in teaching and learning. Although there are no specific references to any aviation-related courses of study, this field could benefit substantially from an interactive approach. Flight training has always been almost entirely pure memorization. Flight students are constantly going over system after system and procedure after procedure. This type of learning has yielded an extremely poor retention rate. The realm of flight-training is now in an era that stresses subjects like cockpit resource management, pilot adaptability, and teamwork. Therefore, it seems odd that those responsible for flight training have …

Aviation Safety As A Function Of Pilot Experience: Rationale Or Rationalization?, Bill D. Bell, Charles L. Robertson, Gregory S. Wagner
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Editor's Note: This article originally appeared in the Spring 1992 issue. It is reprinted due to its continuing value and timeliness. This study tests the effectiveness of an experience model in predicting aviation safety behavior. The elements comprising the model include: (a) flight hours, (b) ratings and flight characteristics, (c) career status, and (d) malfunction history. Data were derived from a random sample of U.S. pilots in Fall 1990 by means of a survey instrument. Significant variance in aviation safety is not explained by the model. The key predictor of safety behavior is the career status (i.e., certificate duration) of …

(Un)Stable Space(S): An Ethnography Of A (Sometimes) Gay Bar, Andrea M. Davis
The Qualitative Report
Using ethnography, I studied the ways in which space was created at a nightclub with a once a week Drag Night. The history of the space (each night building on the night before for years and years) created stability for the nightclub that remained regardless of the individuals within it. Drag Night, however, did not reap the benefits of that stability. Despite site - specific (read theme - night specific) normative performances in the space, the social space was altered through individual performances as well as rules associated with the club.
Learning Abroad Or Just Going Abroad? International Education In Opposite Sides Of The Border, Gerardo Blanco Ramirez
Learning Abroad Or Just Going Abroad? International Education In Opposite Sides Of The Border, Gerardo Blanco Ramirez
The Qualitative Report
International education, particularly through study abroad experiences, has the potential of preparing students for a globally interconnected world. While challenging, it is necessary to translate aspirations of global citizenship into educational programs and assessing their effectiveness. A necessary step in such process consists in taking a close and critical look at the challenges and possibilities for the development of global citizenship through education abroad. In this paper, I follow a decolonizing autoethnographic approach to explore obstacles for the development of global citizenship through education abroad. If education abroad is to promote global citizenship and character development, I propose a more …
Blending The Old And The New: Qualitative Data Analysis A S Critical Thinking And Using Nvivo With A Generic Approach, James A. Bernauer, Marilyn Lichtman, Cynthia Jacobs, Stuart Robinson
Blending The Old And The New: Qualitative Data Analysis A S Critical Thinking And Using Nvivo With A Generic Approach, James A. Bernauer, Marilyn Lichtman, Cynthia Jacobs, Stuart Robinson
The Qualitative Report
In this article the authors seek to make the case that qualitative data analysis can be explained within the framework of critical thinking and incorporates within this framework the role of technology – specifically NVivo. First they discuss critical thinking from the perspectives of Bloom, Adler, and Polanyi. They then link critical thinking to the concept of a general inductive approach to qualitative analysis as described by Thomas. Finally, they illustrate connections of both critical thinking and the general inductive approach to technology using NVivo screenshots.

The Black Flame Trilogy, Multigenerational Educational Trauma, And The Dehumanization Of Black Students, June Cara Christian
The Black Flame Trilogy, Multigenerational Educational Trauma, And The Dehumanization Of Black Students, June Cara Christian
Dissertations
This study identifies W.E.B. Du Bois’ theory of education as put forth in his Black Flame trilogy (BFT). A longitudinal survey of culture and society—specifically educational disparities in the United States from 1863 through 1956, the BFT bears close textual analysis to reveal how the processes of racialization and colonization as well as the movement toward globalization influence education and its contribution to the dehumanization of students. Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome and critical race theory are theoretical tools of analysis that create a multi-generational dialectic that understands Du Bois’ BFT as a socio-historical analysis of White supremacy that establishes a …

Core Values And Attitudes Among Swedish Conscripts Volunteering For International Missions: An Exploratory Study, Johan Österberg, Leif W. Rydstedt
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The purpose of this study was to assess core values and attitudes among conscribed soldiers volunteering for international peacekeeping missions (n=146), by a comparison with conscripts from the same class and regiment that did not apply for international missions (n=275).The sample consisted of an entire class of conscribed soldiers whereof 389 completed all three repeated surveys. There were no demographical differences between the groups. Volunteers expressed higher altruistic basic values and held more positive attitudes toward their military education. The findings in this study are of importance for the Swedish armed forces as success in international missions is dependent on …

Optical Device Use: Exploring Its Impact On Participation In Daily Living Activities Of Older Adults With Amd, Lily Perete Orticio
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose was to explore the experiences of older adults with vision impairment from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in managing participation in daily living activities with the use of assistive low vision optical devices (LVODs) and arrive at a substantive theory that captured the essence of these phenomena. The sample consisted of 18 older adults, ages 75 to 96 years, 6 males and 12 females diagnosed with dry AMD and visual acuity between 20/50-20/200 in the better seeing-eye, English speaking, and acquired their LVODs not less than 6 months prior to the start of the study. Grounded Theory methodology was …

Resilience And Syndemic Risk Factors Among African-American Female Sex Workers, Mance E. Buttram, Hilary L. Surratt, Steven P. Kurtz
CAHSS Faculty Articles
Research on street-based female sex workers documents a multitude of problems faced by these women, such as substance use, HIV risk, mental health problems, victimization, and homelessness. The presence of problems such as these is understood as a syndemic, or co-occurrence of two or more risk factors that act synergistically to create an excess burden of disease. However, the syndemic framework has not previously incorporated the examination of resilience to understand what protective factors enable female sex workers to cope with syndemic risk. Using 562 baseline interviews from street-based African-American female sex workers enrolled in a randomized intervention trial, this …

Epistemic Uniqueness, Permissiveness, And Peer Disagreement, Tung-Ying Wu
Theses
Disagreement is very common in controversial areas such as politics, law, religion, and philosophy, but it is also very common in daily interactions. Clearly, in every disagreement it is neither the case that one should always defer to others, nor that one should always insist she is right. Instead, one should first evaluate the credence of the dissenter’ testimony. Suppose she recognizes the dissenter is her epistemic peer. In the current debate of the epistemology of peer disagreement, it is controversial whether one is rationally required to suspend one’s judgment when disputing with peers. Three different views have been proposed: …
