Integrated Airline Organizational Frameworks And Crew Resource Management Effectiveness, Triant Flouris Aug 2013

Integrated Airline Organizational Frameworks And Crew Resource Management Effectiveness, Triant Flouris

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

It is only through well-designed and implemented Crew Resource Management being deeply rooted in an airline's organizational culture that an airline can achieve its highest possible standard of safety, by having the highest degree of operational efficiency. It is not Crew Resource Management training itself that contributes to well-trained crew members who implement Crew Resource Management principles in flight operations. Rather, it is a strong company organizational culture that contributes, ultimately, to the effectiveness of Crew Resource Management.

The Science-Of-Team-Science, Transdisciplinary Capacity, And Shifting Paradigms For Translational Professionals, Gaetano R. Lotrecchiano

Clinical Research and Leadership Faculty Publications

The Science-of-Team-Science (SciTS) has become an important area of study as collaborative research becomes more normative throughout science inquiry and especially in medical and healthcare sectors. Team science aims for higher and collaborative levels of inquiry that operate within economies of knowledge similar to transdisciplinarity that strive to synthesize knowledge and innovate as a result of newly developed and hybridized methods of approach. This newly becoming and normalizing mode of science will require professionals to be aware of and embrace the shifting realities which have been the consequence of this new economy of knowledge. The next century of inquiry will …

Associations Between Religious Fundamentalism And Attitudes Towards Homosexuality: A Study Into The Differences Between Attitudes Towards Gay Men And Lesbians As Individuals And Same Sex Relations., Katie Clark Aug 2013

Associations Between Religious Fundamentalism And Attitudes Towards Homosexuality: A Study Into The Differences Between Attitudes Towards Gay Men And Lesbians As Individuals And Same Sex Relations., Katie Clark

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

It has long been reported in social research that individuals demonstrating a higher degree of religiosity lend to exhibit more negative attitudes towards homosexuality. However, there is little research in the literature that differentiates between altitudes towards gays and lesbians as individuals and the intimate acts they perform with the same sex. This research proposes to first of all confirm whether there is a relationship between religious fundamentalism and attitudes towards homosexuality, and further to decipher the potential differences in altitudes towards gays and lesbians as individuals and same-sex acts. A self-report survey was completed by 94 students at a …

Educational Course And Curriculum Needs For Corporate Aviation Managers, Stephen M. Quilty

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

A survey was conducted for the National Business Aircraft Association (NBAA) that identified educational content and knowledge areas thought to be important to the success of a corporate aviation flight department manager or chief pilot. The survey consisted of 49 educational course descriptions. Information about the importance of the courses was sought from NBAA member companies, specifically the flight department manager or chief pilot and the individual that the manager or chief pilot reported to in the company. The data collected were ranked and grouped to reflect those topics that were considered important to the success of a manager. Results …

Aviation Science? Collegiate Aviation? Aeronautics? Aerospace Science? Introducing Aeronology In Resolving Identity Issues, Jeffrey A. Johnson Aug 2013

Aviation Science? Collegiate Aviation? Aeronautics? Aerospace Science? Introducing Aeronology In Resolving Identity Issues, Jeffrey A. Johnson

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

In asking collegiate aviation educators for a term or a phrase that adequately describes their academic field, it does not take much time to discover that widespread agreement is notably absent. If we as aviation educators are unable to collectively identify ourselves and the niche we inhabit in the realm of the entire academic community, then how much more difficult will it be for the remainder of the academic community and the general public to identify us as well? There are three possible solutions for aviation educators to consider in confronting the identity problem. Educators can: (1) conclude that identity …

Determination Of Curriculum Content For A Non-Engineering Doctoral Degree In Aviation, Robert W. Kaps

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The U.S. aviation industry has been and continues to be a rapid-growth sector of commerce. Educational and academic metamorphosis coincident with this growth is evident in the number of postsecondary educational institutions offering degrees in aviation. A recent publication of the Collegiate Aviation Guide (UAA, 1994a) listed more than 500 postsecondary institutions offering aviation programs. More than 200 are at the baccalaureate level or higher. Many, established in the past 10 years, coincide with the net industry growth rate.

The Privatization Of Hazard Mitigation: A Case Study Of The Creation And Implementation Of A Federal Program, Alessandra Jerolleman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the role of the private and public sectors in hazard mitigation, an important part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) performance requirements from the Stafford Act. Hazard mitigation is the effort to reduce societal impacts from natural disasters by reducing their risk to people, property and infrastructure; before hazards occur. The goal of the work is to contribute to the literature examining the national trend towards privatization and reliance on the free market economy for the provision of government social services, through such public management movements as the “New Public Management” (NPM) of the 1980s and …

The Intersecting And Integrating Identities Of Rural Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Christians, Brandi Woodell Aug 2013

The Intersecting And Integrating Identities Of Rural Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Christians, Brandi Woodell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The majority of discussions of gay and lesbian experiences in the United States associate gay culture with urban areas. However, there is still a significant population of LGBT people living in the rural United States (Baumle et al 2009). Many of these individuals identify with rural spaces and seek to maintain “country” identities. As with rural spaces, there is an assumption that Christian identities directly conflict with those of non-heterosexual identities. This study examines the ways in which these individuals create and negotiate stereotypically conflicting identities regarding their sexuality, their rural identities and their religious identities. The goal of this …

Holding Mardi Gras Hostage: Mayor Ernest N. Morial And The 1979 New Orleans Police Strike, Gordon F. Chadwick Aug 2013

Holding Mardi Gras Hostage: Mayor Ernest N. Morial And The 1979 New Orleans Police Strike, Gordon F. Chadwick

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 1979, New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebration was disrupted by a police strike. The strike exposed the new political positioning that had resulted from national pressures such as the realization of black political power and the brief surge in public worker unions. New Orleans’ weakening white social elite was forced to assert its remaining power through Mardi Gras, while finding an unexpected ally in Mayor Ernest N. Morial, the first black mayor of New Orleans. This temporary alliance exemplifies an experience that was different than that of other American cities. While strong racial tension persisted, the old establishment’s interests coincided …

A Gateway For Everyone To Believe: Identity, Disaster, And Football In New Orleans, Brandon D. Haynes

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to analyze the dynamic processes of collective identity by examining the relationship between New Orleans and its professional football team, the Saints, after Hurricane Katrina. Much of the discourse written on American professional sports focuses on economic transactions between player and franchise or franchise and city. This study explores sports from a cultural perspective to understand the perceived social values provided to the host community. This case study spans the years from 2006 to 2013 and discusses several major events, including the Hurricane Katrina disaster, the reopening of the Superdome, the Saints winning a …

Neighborhood Cohesion And Daily Well-Being: Results From A Diary Study, Jennifer W. Robinette, Susan T. Charles, Jacqueline A. Mogle, David M. Almeida Aug 2013

Neighborhood Cohesion And Daily Well-Being: Results From A Diary Study, Jennifer W. Robinette, Susan T. Charles, Jacqueline A. Mogle, David M. Almeida

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Neighborly cohesiveness has documented benefits for health. Furthermore, high perceived neighborhood cohesion offsets the adverse health effects of neighborhood socioeconomic adversity. One potential way neighborhood cohesion influences health is through daily stress processes. The current study uses participants (n = 2022, age 30–84 years) from The Midlife in the United States II and the National Study of Daily Experiences II, collected between 2004 and 2006, to examine this hypothesis using a within-person, daily diary design. We predicted that people who perceive high neighborhood cohesion are exposed to fewer daily stressors, such as interpersonal arguments, lower daily physical symptoms and negative …
