Evaluating Media Literacy Education: Concepts, Theories And Future Directions, Hans Martens Sep 2013

Evaluating Media Literacy Education: Concepts, Theories And Future Directions, Hans Martens

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This article synthesizes a large subset of the academic literature on media literacy education. It first argues that media literacy is mostly defined in terms of the knowledge and skills individuals need to analyze, evaluate, or produce media messages. These knowledge and skills mainly relate to four key facets of the mass media phenomenon, i.e. media industries, media messages, media audiences, and media effects. Subsequently, it evaluates what is empirically known about the effectiveness of media literacy practices. Suggestions are made for future research.

They’Ll Need This In College: Teacher Beliefs And The Construction Of The Secondary English Text, Lydia Brauer Sep 2013

They’Ll Need This In College: Teacher Beliefs And The Construction Of The Secondary English Text, Lydia Brauer

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Despite the complex and evolving ways in which contemporary texts are produced, mediated, circulated, and engaged, secondary English texts in the United States remain predominantly canonical and paper-based. Why such a resolutely stable classroom canon, and at the beginning of the twenty-first century a singular medium? While the answer to this question is no doubt far-reaching and complex, in situated classroom practice teacher beliefs are one important component of curriculum conceptualization and implementation. Belief is a uniquely resilient form of meaning making, and English teacher beliefs about the purposes of school and of their subject, and about the relevance and …

Exploring The Relative Importance Of Spatial And Environmental Variation On The Craniometrics Of The Modern Portuguese, Katherine E. Weisensee Sep 2013

Exploring The Relative Importance Of Spatial And Environmental Variation On The Craniometrics Of The Modern Portuguese, Katherine E. Weisensee

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Previous research on the causes of craniometric variation within and among human populations has invoked both genetic and environmental explanations. Recent studies of modern populations in the United States and Portugal, among other populations, suggest that changes in environmental conditions have resulted in significant changes in cranial morphology. While similar changes in cranial morphology have been observed in genetically diverse populations, these populations do not appear to be converging on a common form. This study seeks to understand the role that population history and environmental variation play in explaining craniometric variation in the modern Portuguese. Using three-‐dimensional craniometric data collected …

Feeling The Heat? Substantial Variation In Temperatures Does Not Affect The Proportion Of Males Born In Australia, Barnaby J. Dixson, John Haywood, Philip J. Lester, Diane K. Ormsby Sep 2013

Feeling The Heat? Substantial Variation In Temperatures Does Not Affect The Proportion Of Males Born In Australia, Barnaby J. Dixson, John Haywood, Philip J. Lester, Diane K. Ormsby

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The global proportion of male births has been shown to vary with climate, with a higher proportion of male births documented in colder climates. Here we examined the hypothesis that ambient temperature predicts fluctuations in the proportion of male births in Australia and within seven Australian states using historical annual data spanning 1910-2009. We predicted that within states with tropical ambient temperatures the proportion of male births would decrease when ambient temperatures are higher. Considering the national composite births for the whole of Australia first, the proportion of males born ranged only from 0.510 to 0.517. We observed no relationship …

Living Well, A Pilot Study, Caroline Crane, Dr. Ivan Beutler Sep 2013

Living Well, A Pilot Study, Caroline Crane, Dr. Ivan Beutler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Money attitudes may help us better understand potential vulnerabilities of youth in a growing culture of materialism. Today’s American child is immersed in the consumer marketplace to a degree that dwarfs all other historical experience (Schor, 2004). For many teens success revolves around financial status, social recognition, or appealing appearance (Roberts and Jones, 2001). Extrinsically focused individuals frequently depend on financial resources to achieve the favorable reactions of others in defining themselves. Modern industrialized society has transformed adolescence from a developmental era defined by production to one mainly of consumption where earning and spending money has become one of the …

Modest Fashion: Within Reach Creating Modest Casual Daywear For Women Ages 20-30, Mary Heaps, Dr. Catherine Burnham

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My primary goal with this project was to increase awareness of modesty and provide more options for apparel that is both modest and fashionable. My secondary goal was to start up a sewing business, focusing on patternmaking and custom work. I believe I met the first goal, with plenty of room for increasing awareness. The second goal, has morphed and evolved into a more practical aim that better reflects my current situation and pursuits.

Crossover Of Organizational Commitment, Rebecca A. Bull Schaefer, Stephen G. Green, Mahima Saxena, Howard M. Weiss, Shelly M. Macdermid Wadsworth

Psychology Faculty Publications

Spousal commitment toward an employee's organization is a little-studied construct that deserves attention because his or her spouse may influence the employee's assessments of organizational commitment and turnover intentions. Using 186 couples, this study investigated spousal influence on U.S. military members’ organizational commitment and their decisions to reenlist. Results of a structural equation model analysis indicate that indirect mechanisms of crossover (e.g., positive emotions displayed by the spouse during discussions of reenlistment) facilitated the positive relationships between the organizational commitment of military spouses and members. Findings and discussion contribute to the fields of organizational commitment and crossover, and we conclude …

A Case Study Of Gender Neutral Policies In University Housing, Josh Chave Sep 2013

A Case Study Of Gender Neutral Policies In University Housing, Josh Chave

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Gender neutral housing is an innovative new policy being developed in colleges around the country. One reason to create these policies is an attempt to meet the unique needs and challenges of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. As the number of gender neutral housing policies in the United States continues to rise, research has been slow to meet the growing demand for empirical data on gender neutral housing.

The dissertation presented a case study of one institution. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with administrators, gender neutral housing committee members, residence life staff, and students. This dissertation examined the …

Sustainable Rural Entrepreneurship: A Case In Hungary, Szilvia Luda Sep 2013

Sustainable Rural Entrepreneurship: A Case In Hungary, Szilvia Luda

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

Hungary, along with the other member states of the EU, is making efforts to diminish the social and economic gap between the different regions of the country. EU cohesion funds are designed to serve this goal. However, the utilization of these resources is not efficient enough. The problem is exacerbated by how the disadvantaged regions are supported. Support is provided on the basis of various indicators, such as per capita GDP, life expectancy, residents’ educational status, etc. Omitted from this indicator set is reference to the environment or other structural characteristics of the region (such as proximity to big cities; …

Corporate Environmental Sustainability Beyond Organizational Boundaries: Market Growth, Ecosystems Complexity And Supply Chain Structure As Co-Determinants Of Environmental Impact, Stefano Pogutz, Valerio Micale, Monika Winn Sep 2013

Corporate Environmental Sustainability Beyond Organizational Boundaries: Market Growth, Ecosystems Complexity And Supply Chain Structure As Co-Determinants Of Environmental Impact, Stefano Pogutz, Valerio Micale, Monika Winn

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

“Corporate Environmental Sustainability” has become a widely used term. It implies that an individual firm has the capacity to effectively manage and control the harm inflicted upon the natural environment by its processes, products and business models – a notion we refer to as an organization’s “manageability of environmental impact”. This paper argues that the organization-level concept of corporate sustainability cannot be meaningfully discussed unless it is understood in light of three conditions: market growth dynamics, ecosystems complexity, and supply chain structure. These economic, ecological and industry-organizational conditions outside the organization’s boundaries severely limit an organization’s manageability of its environmental …

Rise And Fall Of The Concept Sustainability, Kiss Károly Sep 2013

Rise And Fall Of The Concept Sustainability, Kiss Károly

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

Sustainability is a key concept when we discuss the effects of human population and activity on nature and the biosphere. Still, especially in Europe, for years it has been used in many other senses both in economics and sociology. Its original meaning has been greatly distorted and extended; it has been misused and abused. This paper examines why this happened and what is the new meaning (if any) of the concept. It also discusses the interpretation of the concept sustainability on different levels—global, national, industrial, and corporate—as the author sees it. Emphasis is placed on the difference between environmental protection …

The Irony Of Choice, Cam T. Nguyen

SURGE

We are having the inevitable late night conversation. You talk about your eventual wedding, your marriage to the person you love, the timeline you’ve created for yourself, and your plans for what our future children will do together. I clarify that I don’t want to have children, but you can’t seem to understand that decision. You question how happy, satisfied, or fulfilled my life will be without children, the maternal instincts I’m supposed to be feeling, and my desire to have something to care for and love. You’re convinced that I will recognize how empty my life will be sans …

High Risk Behavior Among Adolescent Males, Debra W. Armstrong, Dr. Renata T. Forste Sep 2013

High Risk Behavior Among Adolescent Males, Debra W. Armstrong, Dr. Renata T. Forste

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many adolescents today are involved in high risk behaviors which have negative health consequences, and which reduce the likelihood of them growing up to be responsible adults.1 Past research of high risk behavior has been largely based on cross-sectional, area specific data. In this research, national longitudinal data are used to predict high risk behaviors by focusing on risk behaviors such as alcohol use, or smoking cigarettes. Few studies have considered these behaviors together and as noted by Jessor, these behaviors are more of a lifestyle than just separate events.2

“I Love My Work But...” The Professionalization Of Early Childhood Education, Margaret Boyd Sep 2013

“I Love My Work But...” The Professionalization Of Early Childhood Education, Margaret Boyd

The Qualitative Report

There are two separate but related issues that have challenged advocates, researchers and practitioners in the field of early education and care work for decades : improving the quality of children’s programs and increasing the wages and benefits of the workers. The solution has been framed as a need for professionalizing the workforce – professional development training, higher education and enhanced skills. While seeking professional status is expected to improve the quality of childcare programs and worker compensation, the relationship between quality, compensation and professional development training has not been fully explored. Through in - depth interviews with 32 early …

Breathers, Releases, Outlets And Pauses: Employee Resistance In The Context Of Depersonalized Bullying, Premilla D'Cruz Sep 2013

Breathers, Releases, Outlets And Pauses: Employee Resistance In The Context Of Depersonalized Bullying, Premilla D'Cruz

The Qualitative Report

Drawing on a study rooted in van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenology, conducted with agents working in international - facing call centers in Mumbai and Bangalore, India, this paper describes employee resistance to depersonalized bullying. Data were gathered through conversational interviews and subjected to selective and sententious thematic analyses. The theme of ‘breathers, releases, outlets and pauses’ captures both the various behaviours that participants engaged in to gain respite from and to acquire control over their oppressive work environment and the factors that determine their behaviours, namely, their professional identity and their job - related material gains. The findings not only further …

The Metaphors That Research Students Live By, Rod Pitcher Sep 2013

The Metaphors That Research Students Live By, Rod Pitcher

The Qualitative Report

In this paper I report a study of the ways in which research students think about their research. I took a unique approach by using metaphor analysis to study the students’ conceptions. The research students in this study were recruited for an on - line survey at an Australian research - intensive university in which they answered questions relating to their conceptions of research. Five categories of metaphors for research were arrived at which I have labelled metaphors of space, metaphors of travel, metaphors of action, metaphors of the body and metaphors of ordeal. These metaphors provide useful information about …

The Progression Of The Field Of Kinesics, Megan Waiflein Sep 2013

The Progression Of The Field Of Kinesics, Megan Waiflein

Senior Theses - Anthropology

Kinesics, a term coined by anthropologist Ray Birdwhistell, is the study nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is primarily conducted through the use of gestures, facial expressions, and body language. These sometimes subtle cues are estimated to convey as much as seventy percent of the context of a conversation. In this thesis, I review the origin of the field of kinesics in anthropology, the development of subfields, its introduction into other various fields of study, and its significance today. Using citation analysis, I show the movement kinesics through various disciplines. This significant field of research has progressed from a research topic centered …

Sectarian History: The Construction Of Meaning In India, Jeremy Higgins Sep 2013

Sectarian History: The Construction Of Meaning In India, Jeremy Higgins

JCCC Honors Journal

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the construction of religion and social identity in India. Religion is an incredibly complex social phenomenon and must be examined holistically for a true appreciation of history. This paper follows the idea of authority and legitimacy, why religions are adopted, who designs administrations around them and how those administrations are informed. This ties into an examination of history, how it is written and what purpose that writing serves from a social perspective. This paper also examines how meaning systems coexist and affect each other, and how they in fact evolve together in …

Towards A Public Health Legal Structure For Child Welfare, Josh Gupta-Kagan Sep 2013

Towards A Public Health Legal Structure For Child Welfare, Josh Gupta-Kagan

Faculty Publications

The present American child welfare system infringes upon the fundamental liberty interests of millions of children and parents, is adversarial and punitive, and fails to prevent child maltreatment or protect children adequately from its most severe forms. Many in the field now recognize that a public health model would more effectively support the parent-child relationship and protecting children from maltreatment than the current paradigm. Despite much attention to such an approach, the field has yet to develop a clear vision for how the law could or should support a public health approach or shape the actions of individuals and institutions …
