Accuracy Of Within-Household Selection In Web And Mail Surveys Of The General Population, Kristen Olson, Jolene D. Smyth Oct 2013

Accuracy Of Within-Household Selection In Web And Mail Surveys Of The General Population, Kristen Olson, Jolene D. Smyth

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Household surveys are moving from interviewer-administered modes to self-administered modes for data collection, but many households do not accurately follow within-household selection procedures in mail surveys. In this article, we examine accuracy of within-household selection using an oldest adult/youngest adult method in web, mail, and mixed-mode surveys. The frame for this study comes from a telephone survey conducted with Nebraska residents in which the oldest adult/youngest adult method is used to select the initial respondent. One year later, these telephone participants are followed up using identical household selection methods. This article examines characteristics of people who followed the selection procedures …

Life On Hold: The Effect Of Recession And Neoliberalism On Millennials’ Beliefs About Education, Economic Participation, And Adulthood, Stephanie E. Kirmer

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Americans born between 1982 and 1995 (the “millennial” generation) are coming of age and entering adulthood during a time of historically significant economic recession. This study uses qualitative data derived from online sources to explore the effect of this experience on the values, feelings, and beliefs of these young adults regarding economic participation, education, and adulthood. Results indicate that millennials feel isolated, ashamed, fearful, and angry about their circumstances. Some feel so hopeless that mental health problems result. The neoliberal ideology widely prevalent in American culture is identified as a strong contributing factor to this situation. Educators are encouraged to …

The Association Between Insurance Status And Cervical Cancer Screening In Community Health Centers: Exploring The Potential Of Electronic Health Records For Population-Level Surveillance, 2008-2010, Stuart Cowburn, Matthew J. Carlson, Jodi A. Lapidus, Jennifer E. Devoe Oct 2013

Devoe

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction: Cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates in the United States have decreased 67% over the past 3 decades, a reduction mainly attributed to widespread use of the Papanicolaou (Pap) test for cervical cancer screening. In the general population, receipt of cervical cancer screening is positively associated with having health insurance. Less is known about the role insurance plays among women seeking care in community health centers, where screening services are available regardless of insurance status. The objective of our study was to assess the association between cervical cancer screening and insurance status in Oregon and California community health centers …

Prevention Of Type 2 Diabetes (T2dm) In South Africa - A Focus On Facilitating Physical Activity Behaviour Change In Peri-Urban Youth, Carmen Anderson, Anica Jansen Van Vuuren, Despina Learmonth

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This paper focuses on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and the significant health implications it has on individuals living in currently disadvantaged peri-urban areas in South Africa. Given the significant public health and socio-economic burden South Africa faces due to scarce resources and escalating rates of chronic diseases, prevention strategies which impact on modifiable risk factors for T2DM are vital. The population of interest was children and adolescents living in informal settlements on the outskirts of Cape Town. The suggested behaviour change was the increase and maintenance of a more physically active and healthy lifestyle, thereby facilitating weight loss and …

Improving Understanding Of Pre-Service Teacher Experience With Technology Integration., Christopher Mong Oct 2013

Improving Understanding Of Pre-Service Teacher Experience With Technology Integration., Christopher Mong

Teaching and Learning Technologies Publications

Pre-service teachers develop technology competency during their tenure in the college classroom. These stages coincide with Bloom's Revised Taxonomy and offer the opportunity to learn and model technology integration. 656 pre-service education students from five universities across the United States completed a qualitative survey aimed at identifying how they perceived technology integration throughout their teacher education program. Three themes, corresponding to Bloom's Revised Taxonomy, were identified; 1) pre-service teachers first identify and understand technology as a tool, 2) pre-service teachers apply technology and analyze the process of integration, and 3) overall, pre-service teachers do not evaluate and create technology integration …

Whose Intentions Predict? Power Over Condom Use Within Heterosexual Dyads, Laura E. Vanderdrift, Christopher R. Agnew, S Marie Harvey, Jocelyn T. Warren Oct 2013

Whose Intentions Predict? Power Over Condom Use Within Heterosexual Dyads, Laura E. Vanderdrift, Christopher R. Agnew, S Marie Harvey, Jocelyn T. Warren

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

According to major theories of behavioral prediction, the most proximal psychological predictor of an individual’s behavior is that individual’s intention. With respect to interdependent behaviors such as condom use, however, relationship dynamics influence individuals’ power to make decisions and to act. Objective: The current study examines how relationship dynamics impact 3 condom use relevant outcomes: (a) the individual forming his or her own intention to use condoms, (b) the couple forming their joint intention to use condoms, and (c) actual condom use behavior. Method: We conducted a 2-wave longitudinal study of young heterosexual adult couples at high risk for HIV …

The Role Development Of A Community College President’S Spouse, Tracy M. Mcgrady Oct 2013

The Role Development Of A Community College President’S Spouse, Tracy M. Mcgrady

Dissertations

The role of a community college president’s spouse can be an important one in the life of the college and in the success of the presidency, yet the role itself is often vaguely defined. This can cause frustration for a college president’s spouse because he or she experiences ambiguity by not knowing the expectations college stakeholders hold of the spousal role. This study explored the role uncertainties held by community college presidents’ spouses, the strategies they used to navigate their new role, and the conflicts they experience in the role as presidential spouse. A qualitative, grounded theory design was selected …

Critical Politics In A Neoliberal Institution: Gay And Lesbian Organizing At Swarthmore College, 1988-1993, Ali Roseberry-Polier , '14

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

This paper studies gay and lesbian organizing at Swarthmore as part of national trends of neoliberalism, multiculturalism, and queer politics in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Students in this period achieved numerous concrete gains and institutional resources, particularly the establishment of an annual gay and lesbian studies conference and the Intercultural Center. In the process, they entered into new coalitions with each other, changing the way that students conceptualized identity and engaged with the school. Change was limited due to Swarthmore's corporate priorities and the challenges of achieving cultural transformation, but the process of organizing marked a valuable way …

Detroit, Theory, Practice: The League Of Revolutionary Black Workers And Black Power At The Point Of Production, 1967-1971, Kate Aronoff , '14

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

This paper examines the work of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers as it developed out of the Detroit Rebellion of 1967, the city’s prosperous auto industry, the labor movement and the Black Freedom struggle. Heavily influenced by personal experiences in the civil rights and Black Power movements as well as the work of James and Grace Lee Boggs, the League’s leadership cadre created an organizing program unique from that of the Black Panther Party that can provide contemporary activists with an example of intersectional mass movement building informed by a careful attention to conditions and strategy.

In Radical Defense Of Themselves: Women Prison Organizing In The 1975 Raleigh Revolt, Andrea Jácome , '14

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

As an intervention in the limited, male-centric historiography of prisoner organizing in the 1970s, this paper focuses on a weeklong revolt in the North Carolina Correctional Center for Women in 1975 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Developing out of the legacy of North Carolina’s homegrown tradition of Black armed resistance throughout the rise and wane of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, the women of the Raleigh Revolt challenged the respectability politics of earlier, dominant forms of Black women’s activism. The women inmates at NCCCW understood and articulated the modern day emergence of mass incarceration as a form of systemic …

Childhood Socialization And Political Attitudes: Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Andrew Healy, Neil Malhotra Oct 2013

Childhood Socialization And Political Attitudes: Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Andrew Healy, Neil Malhotra

Economics Faculty Works

Scholars have argued that childhood experiences strongly impact political attitudes, but we actually have little causal evidence since external factors that could influence preferences are correlated with the household environment. We utilize a younger sibling's gender to isolate random variation in the childhood environment and thereby provide unique evidence of political socialization. Having sisters causes young men to be more likely to express conservative viewpoints with regards to gender roles and to identify as Republicans. We demonstrate these results in two panel surveys conducted decades apart: the Political Socialization Panel (PSP) and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY). We …

Does Retirement Induced Through Social Security Pension Eligibility Influence Subjective Well-Being? A Cross-Country Comparison, Arie Kapteyn, Jinkook Lee, Gema Zamarro

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

How does retirement influence subjective well-being? Some studies suggest retirement does not affect subjective well-being or may improve it. Others suggest it adversely affects it. This paper aims at advancing our understanding of the effect of retirement on subjective well-being by (1) using longitudinal data to tease out the retirement effect from age and cohort differences; (2) using instrumental variables to address potential reverse causation of subjective well-being on retirement decisions; and (3) conducting cross-country analyses, exploiting differences in eligibility ages for retirement benefits across countries and within countries. We use panel data from the US Health and Retirement Study …
