A Delphi Study To Determine The European Core Curriculum For Master Programmes In Genetic Counselling, H Skirton, S Barnoy, C Ingvoldstad, I Van Kessel, Et Al
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Genetic counsellors have been working in some European countries for at least 30 years. Although there are great disparities between the numbers, education, practice and acceptance of these professionals across Europe, it is evident that genetic counsellors and genetic nurses in Europe are working autonomously within teams to deliver patient care. The aim of this study was to use the Delphi research method to develop a core curriculum to guide the educational preparation of these professionals in Europe. The Delphi method enables the researcher to utilise the views and opinions of a group of recognised experts in the field of …

Livelabs: Initial Reflections On Building A Large-Scale Mobile Behavioral Experimentation Testbed, Archan Misra, Rajesh Krishna Balan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We believe that, for successful adoption of novel mobile technologies and applications, it is important to be able to test them under real usage patterns, and with real users. To implement this vision, we present our initial effort in building LiveLabs, a large-scale mobile testbed for in-situ experimentation. LiveLabs is unique in two aspects. First, LiveLabs operates on a scale much larger than most research testbeds— it is being deployed in four different public spaces in Singapore (a university campus, a shopping mall, an airport and a leisure resort), and is expected to have a pool of over 30,000 opt-in …

An Eriksonian Approach To Consumer Identity, Sandra Rathod
Open Access Dissertations
Rathod, Sandra R. Ph.D., Purdue University, December 2013. An Eriksonian Approach to Consumer Identity. Major Professor: Richard A. Feinberg.
Ego development is the fifth stage in Erikson's Lifecycle Development theory (1959) and is a major psychosocial stage beginning in adolescence and lasting into emerging adulthood. Past research based upon Marcia's Ego Identity Status Paradigm (1996) has investigated a number of ideological and interpersonal domains relevant to one's ego identity, however in today's consumer societies, where what you have is at least as important is who you are or what you do, an Eriksonian approach to consumer ego identity (CEI) has …

Supermarkets In India: Struggles Over The Organization Of Agricultural Markets And Food Supply Chains, Amy J. Cohen
Supermarkets In India: Struggles Over The Organization Of Agricultural Markets And Food Supply Chains, Amy J. Cohen
University of Miami Law Review
This article analyzes the conflicts and distributional effects of efforts to restructure food supply chains in India. Specifically, it examines how large retail corporations are presently attempting to transform how fresh produce is produced and distributed in the "new" India-and efforts by policymakers, farmers, and traders to resist these changes. It explores these conflicts in West Bengal, a state that has been especially hostile to supermarket chains. Via an ethnographic study of small producers, traders, corporate leaders, and policymakers in the state, the article illustrates what food systems, and the legal and extralegal rules that govern them, reveal about the …

Diabetes And Prostate Cancer Screening In Black And White Men, Maureen Sanderson, Jay H. Fowke, Loren Lipworth, Xijing Han, Flora Ukoli, Ann L. Coker, William J. Blot, Margaret K. Hargreaves
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
PURPOSE: Prior studies conducted primarily among white men find a reduced risk of prostate cancer associated with time since developing diabetes. While biologic explanations are plausible, the association may in part arise from more frequent prostate cancer screening among those with a diabetes diagnosis. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between diabetes and prostate cancer screening.
METHODS: We examined differences in prostate cancer screening (prostate-specific antigen and/or digital rectal examination) testing practices after a diabetes diagnosis among lower-income persons living in the southeastern United States and enrolled in the Southern Community Cohort Study between 2002 …
Sexual Coercion And Sexual Violence At First Intercourse Associated With Sexually Transmitted Infections, Corrine M. Williams, Emily R. Clear, Ann L. Coker
Sexual Coercion And Sexual Violence At First Intercourse Associated With Sexually Transmitted Infections, Corrine M. Williams, Emily R. Clear, Ann L. Coker
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
BACKGROUND: Violence against women has been associated with subsequent risky sexual behaviors and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We explored whether sexual coercion or violence at first intercourse was associated with self-reported STIs.
METHODS: Using nationally representative data from the 2006 to 2010 National Survey of Family Growth, we analyzed female respondents aged 18 to 44 (n = 9466) who answered questions on coercion at first intercourse (wantedness, voluntariness, and types of force used) and STIs using logistic regression analyses. We explored degrees of coercion, which we label as neither, sexual coercion (unwanted or nonphysical force), or sexual violence (involuntary or …
School Consolidation And Community Development, Gary Paul Green
School Consolidation And Community Development, Gary Paul Green
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The linkages between schools and community are seldom discussed in the research on school consolidation. Most of the focus of this body of literature is on the effects of school consolidation on efficiency and equity. In this essay I discuss the importance of school-community relationships and the critical role schools can play in community development. School consolidation can have several negative impacts on the local economy, social capital, and community identity. Assessments of the benefits and costs of consolidation need to consider more carefully the impacts on communities and the potential of building a stronger relationship between schools and communities.
Ell High School Students Of Mexican Ancestry: A Phenomenological Study Of Language Ideologies, Kristine Sudbeck
Ell High School Students Of Mexican Ancestry: A Phenomenological Study Of Language Ideologies, Kristine Sudbeck
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
The formation of languages and dialects is frequently considered a social process (Gal & Irvine, 1995). As such, humans form their own ideologies about particular language varieties, placing values on certain ones in a given context more than others (Greenfield, 2010). The development of a person’s language ideology can be influenced by the profit of distinction, which Pierre Bourdieu (1984) describes as the “noted margin of difference for usefulness and prestige of a particular language” (p. 55). It is through the process of misrecognition (Bourdieu, 1984) that a particular language is “recognized as legitimate and appropriate for discourse in official …
Tiebout In The Country The Inevitable Politics Of Rural School Consolidation, Steven L. Willborn
Tiebout In The Country The Inevitable Politics Of Rural School Consolidation, Steven L. Willborn
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This essay explains why school consolidation issues are especially difficult in rural America. Consolidation is most appropriate when adjacent districts have similar preferences for taxation and spending on schools. In that case, economies of scale can be reaped without interfering much with resident preferences on taxes and school quality. In urban areas residents signal these preferences by moving into (or out of) school districts that match their preferences, a process known as Tiebout sorting. As a result, school consolidation decisions can be based on good information about resident preferences. The basic claim of this essay is that Tiebout sorting works …
The Normative Legitimacy Of International Courts, Nienke Grossman
The Normative Legitimacy Of International Courts, Nienke Grossman
All Faculty Scholarship
This Article’s objective is to spark discussion about the standards by which we judge international courts. Traditional justifications for the authority of international courts are based on outmoded assumptions of their role and impact. State consent and procedural fairness to litigants are insufficient to ground the legitimacy of institutions that may adjudicate the international rights and duties of nonlitigants, deeply affect the interests of nonlitigating stakeholders, and shape the law prospectively. These realities mandate a new approach to the legitimacy of international courts. This Article presents alternative or additional approaches for justifying the authority of international courts rooted in both …

An Empirical Comparison Of Knowledge And Skill In The Context Of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Kathryn Demps
An Empirical Comparison Of Knowledge And Skill In The Context Of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Kathryn Demps
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background
We test whether traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) about how to make an item predicts a person’s skill at making it among the Tsimane’ (Bolivia). The rationale for this research is that the failure to distinguish between knowledge and skill might account for some of the conflicting results about the relationships between TEK, human health, and economic development.
Methods
We test the association between a commonly-used measure of individual knowledge (cultural consensus analysis) about how to make an arrow or a bag and a measure of individual skill at making these items, using ordinary least-squares regression. The study consists of …
A College Model For Countering Human Trafficking, Ron D. Petitte
A College Model For Countering Human Trafficking, Ron D. Petitte
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 5th (2013)
Creating awareness is part of education and non-awareness is 90 percent of the problem in countering human trafficking. Human trafficking is not on the radar screens in most educational institutions of higher learning, nor in most churches. This is the need Bryan College, through the Center for Leadership Initiatives (CLI) and, in particular, the Justice & Mercy Initiative (JMI), is seeking to meet. Our Vision Statement for 2013-2014 calls for such near term goals as: Sponsoring subject matter experts to address college forums; lending financial support to Students Stopping the Trafficking of Persons (SSTOP); enabling Bryan students to travel to …

The Moderating Effects Of The Ethicality On Both Morality And Religiosity Concerning The Likelihood Of Tax Evasion, Fred Coleman
The Moderating Effects Of The Ethicality On Both Morality And Religiosity Concerning The Likelihood Of Tax Evasion, Fred Coleman
Doctoral Dissertations
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) defines the estimate of the difference between the federal income tax due each year and the amount voluntarily and timely paid as the "tax gap". In 1981, the Service reports a tax gap of 81.5 billion dollars. In 2006, the most recent IRS data indicates that the tax gap has risen to 345 billion dollars which suggests that tax evasion in the United States remains a growing concern for the federal government. Although various economic and nonpecuniary theories have been developed to investigate tax noncompliance, Jackson and Milliron (1986) and Cruz et al. (2000) suggest …
