The Modern Opinions Regarding Polygamy Of Married Men And Women In Dakar, Hannah Fried-Tanzer Oct 2013

The Modern Opinions Regarding Polygamy Of Married Men And Women In Dakar, Hannah Fried-Tanzer

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Polygamy is the practice in which a man takes multiple wives. While it is no longer legal in certain countries, it is still allowed both legally and religiously in Senegal, and is still practiced today. Traveling to Senegal from the United States, one might find that the opinions toward the practice vary by country. This study was conducted for three purposes. The first purpose was to define polygamy in a Senegalese context and discover how married men and women in Dakar regard the practice. The second was to determine whether these opinions vary based on gender, length of marriage, ethnicity, …

Analysis Of Environmental Factors Affecting Fruit Quality For The 2007 Growing Season In A California Vineyard, Sean Castorani Oct 2013

Analysis Of Environmental Factors Affecting Fruit Quality For The 2007 Growing Season In A California Vineyard, Sean Castorani

SNS Master's Theses

Wine grape quality is heavily influenced by a combination of soil properties and site topography. We used anthocyanin content and yield data from Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard near Madera, California collected during the 2007 growing season. We compared sets of hypotheses regarding the anthocyanin content of winegrapes and vineyard yields as a function of vineyard soil and topographic properties. Each hypothesis was expressed as a regression model predicting a response variable (yield or anthocyanin content) from one or more predictor variables. We used a multiple working hypotheses approach to compare these models using information theoretic …

The Role Of Mobile Technology In Enhancing The Use Of Personal Health, Mohamed Abouzahra, Joseph Tan Oct 2013

The Role Of Mobile Technology In Enhancing The Use Of Personal Health, Mohamed Abouzahra, Joseph Tan

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Healthcare industry is essential for the wellbeing of society members, however this industry is characterized by high cost and by plagued by serious medical errors. Personal health records (PHR) can play an important role in solving healthcare problems by enhancing patients’ involvement in their treatment, and improving patient-provider communication. Despite the potential importance of PHR systems, they suffer from low adoption rate because of several factors such as digital divide and lack of training. In this paper we propose that mobile PHR systems (MPHR) can aid in overcoming barriers to adopt PHR. We present a theoretical model based on theory …

Issue 04: Inventory Of Services Provided To Immigrants And Refugees In The Waterloo Region, J. Fernando Reyes, Margaret Walton-Roberts, Jenna Hennebry

International Migration Research Centre

In this issue of Policy Points we have provided an inventory and assessment of immigrant services providers currently delivered in the Waterloo Region. Local communities play an important role in the settlement of newcomers and their integration into society. Waterloo Region has the fifth-highest immigrant rate in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2007), and in 2009 the Kitchener Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) was 11th highest nationally in terms of the number of immigrants arriving, and the fourth-highest in Ontario (Citizenship and Immigration Canada, 2011). Furthermore, Waterloo Region is expected to have a significant increase in the immigrant population over the next decades …

Philosophy Upside Down?, Peter Baumann Oct 2013

Philosophy Upside Down?, Peter Baumann

Philosophy Faculty Works

Philip Kitcher recently argued for a reconstruction in philosophy. According to him, the contemporary mainstream of philosophy (in the English-speaking world, at least) has deteriorated into something that is of relevance only to a few specialists who communicate with each other in a language nobody else understands. Kitcher proposes to reconstruct philosophy along two axes: a knowledge axis (with a focus on the sciences) and a value axis. The present article discusses Kitcher's diagnosis as well as his proposal of a therapy. It argues that there are problems with both, and it ends with an alternative view of what some …

Measuring Bench Presence: Federal District Judges In The Courtroom, 2008-2012, Jordan M. Singer, William G. Young Oct 2013

Measuring Bench Presence: Federal District Judges In The Courtroom, 2008-2012, Jordan M. Singer, William G. Young

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

In a companion piece, the authors argued for a more comprehensive model of federal district court productivity that included, among other things, a measure of each court's capacity and commitment to provide procedural fairness to litigants. The authors further proposed a new procedural fairness metric called bench presence, a measure of the time that district judges spend adjudicating issues in an open forum.

This Article examines real-world bench presence data from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. On the surface, the numbers are disappointing for those who view courtroom time as integral to procedural fairness protections. Specifically, the …

Risk Factors For Overweight/Obesity In Preschool Children: An Ecological Approach, Dipti A. Dev, Brent A. Mcbride, Barbnara H. Fiese, Blake Jones, Hyunkeun Cho, Strong Kids Research Team

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Background—Identification of risk factors is critical to preventing the childhood obesity epidemic. Risk factors that contribute to obesity are multifactorial. However, limited research has focused on identifying obesity risk factors using an ecological approach.

Methods—Baseline self-report survey data from the STRONG Kids program were used. The sample consisted of 329 parent-child dyads recruited from childcare programs in east-central Illinois. Child height and weight were measured and converted to age- and sex-specific z-scores using standard growth charts. An ecological model provided the theoretical framework for the selection of 22 previously reported childhood obesity risk factors. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used …

SSRC Annual Reports

The SSRC was established in 1950 and enjoys a long and storied history of research accomplishments. The impact of our research has had on the state, the nation and the world is evident in the success of our organization, which has ultimately been driven by the desire and dedication of our employees. Although an organization's annual report provides a venue to applaud the hard work and dedication of its employees for its success during the previous year, this particular report also celebrates our accomplished past and acknowledges significant historical milestones celebrated this year.

Sentencing The Family: Recognizing The Needs Of Dependent Children In The Administration Of The Criminal Justice System, Tamar Lerer Oct 2013

Sentencing The Family: Recognizing The Needs Of Dependent Children In The Administration Of The Criminal Justice System, Tamar Lerer

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Hundreds of thousands of incarcerated persons are parents; in many instances, their incarceration has profound effects on their young children. Despite the predictable harm that the these children experience when their caretakers are incarcerated, the criminal justice system lacks a uniform, principled, and transparent way to consider their interests at critical stages in the process.

In this Article, I argue that the interests of the children of incarcerated offenders should be considered and demonstrate how this can be done. The paper proceeds in three Parts. In the first Part, I explain why we should care about caretaker incarceration: it harms …

Toward An Interpretive Approach To Social Movement Leadership, Michael Decesare Oct 2013

Toward An Interpretive Approach To Social Movement Leadership, Michael Decesare

Sociology Faculty Publications

The concept of a leader is one ofthe most fundamental to the study of collective behavior. It is also one of the most poorly theorized, primarily because social movement theorists continue to (1) assume that leaders must be affiliated with an organization and (2) argue over who "counts" as a leader. This paper offers two alternative approaches. I argue, first, that our current conceptualization must be broadened to include individuals who are unaffiliated with an organization. Second, I suggest that rather than debating who qualifies and does not qualify as a movement leader, we would do better to take an …

"Real Life Solutions To Real Life Problems:" Collaborating With A Non-Profit Foundation To Engage Honors Students In Applied Research, Emily Stark

Psychology Department Publications

Colleges and universities have long emphasized undergraduate research experiences as valuable activities for students. The National Science Foundation (NSF) echoed this focus in 2003, recommending that all students get involved in undergraduate research as early as possible in their college careers (NSF). Collegiate honors programs in particular have embraced the role of student research as an integral experience for high-ability students, leading the way in developing the thesis-based model of undergraduate research that is increasingly common in institutions of higher learning. However, one difficulty in getting honors students involved in research, particularly early in their years at college, is that …

Booking Students: An Analysis Of School Arrests And Court Outcomes, Kerrin C. Wolf Oct 2013

Booking Students: An Analysis Of School Arrests And Court Outcomes, Kerrin C. Wolf

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

The fate of school discipline and security in America is at a crucial turning point. While the “school-to-prison pipeline” has recently received an increased amount of attention from policy makers interested in improving public education, the recent shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut led to renewed calls for the heightened security measures that helped give rise to the pipeline. This article provides clear evidence that heightened disciplinary and security measures in schools are faulty policy responses, as they have adverse impacts on the students they intend to protect and siphon resources away from policies that more effectively ensure …
