The Overlooked Victims Of Domestic-Violence Cases: Pets, Leandra Preston-Sidler Oct 2013

The Overlooked Victims Of Domestic-Violence Cases: Pets, Leandra Preston-Sidler

UCF Forum

Many of us consider pets as family members. Some refer to pets as “children” and treat them as such. I am guilty of the latter and will do anything for my dogs, including spending too much money on their needs, letting them sleep in our bed (pillows included) and generally spoiling them rotten.

Depression And Employment Among Men: A Study Of Displaced Steelworkers, Maren Trowbridge, Dr. Marie Cronwall Oct 2013

Depression And Employment Among Men: A Study Of Displaced Steelworkers, Maren Trowbridge, Dr. Marie Cronwall

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many workers who find themselves without employment fall into serious depression. As job loss is common in our society, its human cost becomes increasingly widespread. These mental health problems reach even the well-being of the family as well as long-term financial stability. Often, those who are reemployed find themselves in less lucrative, more menial jobs that fail to provide the lifestyle or even the necessities that their previous employment provided. Thus, the underemployed frequently experience levels of depression similar to those of the unemployed (Dooley, Prause, and Ham-Rowbottom 2000).

Job Loss And Health Status Among Laid Off Steel Workers, Brock O'Neil, Dr. Marie Cornwall Oct 2013

Job Loss And Health Status Among Laid Off Steel Workers, Brock O'Neil, Dr. Marie Cornwall

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Job loss is a stressful life event that results in many changes in life. For some time, researchers have noted that there is a strong relationship between job loss and declines in health outcomes (Brenner 1979). When two things are related, such as job loss and poor health outcomes in this study, it is difficult to establish which one causes the other. That is, does job loss result in poor health or does poor health cause one to lose work? A number of researchers have examined this problem and have demonstrated, quite convincingly, that job loss does lead to declines …

Is Jefferson A Founding Father Of Democratic Education? A Response To "Jefferson And The Ideology Of Democratic Schooling", Johann Neem

Democracy & Education

This response argues that it is reasonable to consider Thomas Jefferson a proponent of democratic education. It suggests that Jefferson's education proposals sought to ensure the wide distribution of knowledge and that Jefferson's legacy remains important to us today.

A Qualitative Study Of Community Home-Based Care And Antiretroviral Adherence In Swaziland, Robin Root, Alan Whiteside Oct 2013

A Qualitative Study Of Community Home-Based Care And Antiretroviral Adherence In Swaziland, Robin Root, Alan Whiteside

Publications and Research

Introduction Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has rendered HIV and AIDS a chronic condition for individuals in many parts of the world. Adherence, however, is integral to achieving chronicity. Studies have shown both relatively high ART adherence rates in sub-Saharan Africa and the importance of community home-based care (CHBC) to facilitating this process. In light of diminished HIV and AIDS funding globally and increased reliance on CHBC throughout Africa, a better understanding of how CHBC may strengthen ART adherence is essential to improving patients’ quality of life, tending to the needs of care supporters and achieving healthier populations. Methods This article reports …

Accommodations For Patients With Disabilities In Primary Care: A Mixed Methods Study Of Practice Administrators, Jennifer Renee Pharr

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Structural barriers that limit access to health care services for people with disabilities have been identified through qualitative studies; however, little is known about how patients with disabilities are accommodated in the clinical setting when a structural barrier is encountered. The purpose of this study was to identify how primary care medical practices in the United States accommodated people with disabilities when a barrier to service is encountered. Primary care practice administrators from the medical management organization were identified through the organization’s website. Sixty-three administrators from across the US participated in this study. Practice administrators reported that patients were examined …

Investigation Of Learning Style Preferences Of Business Students, Chen Wu, Dominick E. Fazarro

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

This study investigates learning style preferences of college business majors. We find they prefer the Structure learning style as defined by the Dunn and Dunn Learning Style Model (1978). Modification of instructional techniques to suit this preference generates a marginal significant increase in the performance of students in the experimental group relative to the control group as measured by their Final Course Grade Average (FCGA).

A Tool Also For Linguists: A Review Of Paul Sullivan’S Qualitative Data Analysis Using A Dialogical Approach, Grandon Goertz Oct 2013

A Tool Also For Linguists: A Review Of Paul Sullivan’S Qualitative Data Analysis Using A Dialogical Approach, Grandon Goertz

The Qualitative Report

Paul Sullivan (2013) introduces a method of speech analysis that uses a dialogical approach, which is distinguished from critical discourse analysis, phenomenological analysis, and grounded theory by its hermeneutic of trust. In this approach, data is analyzed using a pairing of bureaucratic and theoretical methods that indicates in the speech where the key moments are and where intonation expresses meaning. In the evaluation process subjectivity is defined and described. The types of data that would be especially suited to this approach include interviews, focus group speech, and conversation. This dialogic approach also has applications in the field of linguistics

The Therapeutic Interview Process In Qualitative Research Studies, Judith A. Nelson, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Lisa A. Wines, Rebecca K. Frels Oct 2013

The Therapeutic Interview Process In Qualitative Research Studies, Judith A. Nelson, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Lisa A. Wines, Rebecca K. Frels

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this paper is to describe the systemic strategies used in marriage and family therapy relevant to interviews, via what we call the therapeutic interview process, that expand the meaning of a research study for both the counselor researcher and the participant(s). We outline the therapeutic interview process for conducting transformative - based interviews via similar strategies from a family systems perspective conceptualized by Charlés (2007). The central core of the interview process is the therapeutic conversation itself that involves the systemic whole. This therapeutic conversation is facilitated by debriefing interviews, whereby the counselor researcher is interviewed to …

The Sexy Issue: Visual Expressions Of Heteronormativity And Gender Identities In Cosmopolitan Magazine, Michael J. Saraceno, Rachel B. Tambling Oct 2013

The Sexy Issue: Visual Expressions Of Heteronormativity And Gender Identities In Cosmopolitan Magazine, Michael J. Saraceno, Rachel B. Tambling

The Qualitative Report

The current study used a qualitative image analysis to explore observed interactional behaviors communicated through images printed in Cosmopolitan magazine during the calendar year of 2009 as a means to infer social values . Two general inquiries were used to guide the manner with which behavior was observed: is a heteronormative bias present and what values regarding the expressions of sexual orientation and gender identities can be inferred from these images. The sample consisted of 722 individual images depicting groups of two or more persons. Images were coded for group gender composition, activities engaged in, and physical touch . Results …

Student Equity: Discouraging Cheating In Online Courses, Timothy B. Michael, Melissa A. Williams Oct 2013

Student Equity: Discouraging Cheating In Online Courses, Timothy B. Michael, Melissa A. Williams

Administrative Issues Journal

As online programs at conventional universities continue to expand, administrators and faculty face new challenges. Academic dishonesty is nothing new, but an online testing environment requires different strategies and tactics from what we have had to consider in the past. Our university has recently adapted successful face-toface programs in financial management, both graduate and undergraduate, for delivery in a fully-online format. This paper discusses our experiences moving to a new environment, the challenges of student attempts to cheat and plagiarize, and techniques that we have found to prevent both cheating on high-stakes assessments and plagiarism. We present a number of essential …

Human Rights Organizations As Agents Of Change: When Do They Succeed And When Do They Fail?, Kyla Mcentire, Matthew Krain, Michele Leiby

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

As a key actor within the human rights transnational advocacy network, NGOs, such as Amnesty International, strive to shape individuals’ values on such contentious issues as the use of torture and to mobilize them to act on their values. While much has been written describing this advocacy work, little systematic research has been done evaluating its efficacy. We conducted archival research to identify the three most common messaging techniques employed by AI: (1) informational frames, where the focus is to educate the reader by presenting them with core facts and statistics; (2) personal frames, where a personal narrative is told …
