My Sociology: The Challenge Of Transforming Classroom Culture From A Focus On Grades To A Focus On Learning, David L. Strickland, Carol J. Strickland
My Sociology: The Challenge Of Transforming Classroom Culture From A Focus On Grades To A Focus On Learning, David L. Strickland, Carol J. Strickland
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
This paper documents the pedagogical remodeling of an Introduction to Sociology course. The challenge is to transform the classroom culture, and ultimately the college culture, from a focus on grades to a focus on learning. This transformation is accomplished through a series of learning activities embodied in My Sociology resources, which have been designed to be not merely learner-centered but ego-centered. Seasoned professors have often commented that students seem to perk up when the lesson is about them. Taking advantage of this energy, the discussion of sociology in this course begins with a treatment of the self, and then branches …
When And Where I Enter: Teaching The Concepts Of Critical Pedagogy And Applied Sociology Through Study Abroad Programs, Karen Young, Martha Hughes
When And Where I Enter: Teaching The Concepts Of Critical Pedagogy And Applied Sociology Through Study Abroad Programs, Karen Young, Martha Hughes
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Participation of students in study abroad programs which focus on teaching the core concepts and principles in a different country enhances a student's understanding and appreciation of the host country's culture and brings alive the concept of globalization in a way that no other classroom experience in America could ever do. The University System of Georgia's European Council study abroad programs have for years offered in-depth immersion programs which have proven to be exciting, effective and reliable models for increasing a student's awareness and actively stimulating their capacity for higher learning, often leading to an increase in participatory community activism …

Challenging Whiteness In Higher Education Classrooms: Context, Content, And Classroom Dynamics, Denise Woodall
Challenging Whiteness In Higher Education Classrooms: Context, Content, And Classroom Dynamics, Denise Woodall
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Abstract
The following exploratory research is an examination of professor experiences with teaching on the topic of white privilege. Drawing from critical race pedagogical theory and real classroom experiences, the various solutions professors found to be useful are reported. Data were compiled from a sample of published literature on challenging whiteness and in-depth interviews from four professors at Southern colleges who have written on this topic. The results of this research illuminate some of the various classroom dynamics, course design ideas, teaching techniques, theoretical utilities, and future professional directions for challenging white privilege. Although the scope of this study is …

Incorporating Ethics Holistically: A Case Study In Research Methods Courses For Undergraduates, Ellen Ballard, Miriam W. Boeri, Darina Lepadatu
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Ethical awareness and research integrity are quintessential elements that should not miss from the training of future social science professionals. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine how ethics are taught by faculty and learned by students using a case study of faculty teaching a two-course research sequence for undergraduate Sociology majors at a large public university in southeastern USA. Beyond the protection of human subjects, we discuss how ethics need to be considered in every phase of the research process (sampling, data collection, data storage, analysis, reporting of research findings, and conflict of interests). This paper exposes …

When The Classroom Gets Personal: Teaching About Gender Violence, Alison Hatch
When The Classroom Gets Personal: Teaching About Gender Violence, Alison Hatch
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
This paper discusses some of the challenges in teaching about gender violence, specifically with the knowledge that many female students are survivors of sexual assault and intimate partner violence. Sociology courses often strive for students to cultivate their sociological imaginations and connect their personal experiences to larger social issues. This process can be problematic for survivors of gender violence, and I discuss the risk of silencing survivors and conversely the risk of forcing students to share personal stories when they might not be willing to do so. By applying an engaged pedagogical approach in the classroom, I offer some teaching …
Trinidad And Religious Pluralism: Sociology And Faith In A Caribbean Island, Ned Rinalducci
Trinidad And Religious Pluralism: Sociology And Faith In A Caribbean Island, Ned Rinalducci
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
The Caribbean Island of Trinidad has a unique history and demographic makeup causing it to be especially relevant to sociological study. Roughly equal numbers of Trinidadians are of African descent and East Indian descent. I started taking students to the island in 2004 to study the politics of identity, race, ethnicity, religion, and the legacies of colonialism. This piece focuses on exposing undergraduate students to the various religious traditions of Trinidad including Hinduism, Islam, the Orisha faith, and Christianity. Immersion in the rich cultural and religious traditions of Trinidad creates and educational climate and opportunities for teaching and learning like …
A Thematic Approach To Teach Introductory Sociology, Albert E. Mccormick Jr.
A Thematic Approach To Teach Introductory Sociology, Albert E. Mccormick Jr.
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Soon into his career, the author discerned several pedagogic flaws in introductory sociology texts. Responding to these flaws, he organized his introductory course around the theme of social change. This theme serves as a background for and lead-in to just five other topic areas amenable to a basic understanding of the discipline: demography, social differentiation, social stratification, the family, and deviance. Sociological theory, statistics, and methods are linked to these substantive topic areas only where appropriate. Topics are covered in depth and important concepts are directly illustrated by college-level readings, written by sociologists. The result was the development of an …
Temporary Visitor: Reevaluating My Undergraduate Service-Learning Experience Tutoring At A California Juvenile Probation Camp, Mary Barr
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
College and university curriculums offer a growing number of service-learning courses. These programs allow students to perform community service and, as a result, develop a heightened sense of civic responsibility. In this essay I argue that relationships between higher education and social service institutions favor students rather than the disadvantaged groups with which they work. An undergraduate sociology course that I took in 1997 gave me the opportunity to do participant observation at a prison for juvenile offenders in Los Angeles, California. Drawing from an old set of field notes, I describe my experiences tutoring incarcerated youth. In retrospect I …

An Exploration Of Crime By Policewomen, Philip M. Stinson, Natalie E. Todak, Mary Dodge
An Exploration Of Crime By Policewomen, Philip M. Stinson, Natalie E. Todak, Mary Dodge
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
The current study explores criminal conduct by policewomen. This information is increasingly relevant as police departments hire more women, especially if the crimes committed by policewomen differ from those of policemen. News searches identified 105 cases depicting arrests of policewomen. A content analysis was performed. Findings indicate differences exist between crimes committed by policemen and policewomen, as well as by policewomen and women in general. Crime by policewomen is most often profit-motivated. Policewomen had fewer years of service and lower ranks, committed less violent crimes, and were more likely to receive suspensions for off-duty crimes compared to their male peers.

Explaining The Emergence Of Indigenous-Local Intergovernmental Relations In Settler Societies: A Theoretical Framework, Jen Nelles, Christopher Alcantara
Explaining The Emergence Of Indigenous-Local Intergovernmental Relations In Settler Societies: A Theoretical Framework, Jen Nelles, Christopher Alcantara
Political Science Faculty Publications
There has been growing interest among practitioners and academics in the emergence of intergovernmental relations between local and Aboriginal governments in Canada. Initial research has focused on describing the nature of these relations but has yet to develop any theoretical expectations regarding why some communities are more likely to cooperate than others. We addresses this lacuna by developing a theoretical framework for explaining the emergence of cooperation between Aboriginal and local governments. After identifying a set of variables and specifying how they are likely to affect the propensity of communities to cooperate, we conclude with a discussion of how future …
