Interprofessional Teaching And Learning In Health And Social Care Professions: An Evidence-Based Proposal For Interprofessional Education, Lee Franklin Koch, Helga Horn Oct 2013

Interprofessional Teaching And Learning In Health And Social Care Professions: An Evidence-Based Proposal For Interprofessional Education, Lee Franklin Koch, Helga Horn

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:

Background: Health and social care is fractured and highly specialized, frequently resulting in poor coordination of treatment, therapy and care, which in turn can negatively affect client outcomes. Interprofessional collaboration reduces these effects by improving the quality of care delivery. Interprofessional education/IPE is seen as an effective means of preparing future health and social care workers for interprofessional collaborative practice.

Research Questions: What recommendations for implementing IPE can be gleaned from the literature? How can these recommendations be applied to pre-licensure health and social care training programs at an institutional level?

Objectives: Formulate …

Developing An Evidence-Based Interprofessional Education (Ipe) Program, Nancy Hoffart

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Friday, July 26, 2013: Purpose: As early as 2003 the Institute of Medicine called for multidisciplinary education as an essential aspect in educating future health professionals. The objectives of this presentation are to 1) report findings from a review of research and case-based literature on prelicensure IPE, 2) describe how the evidence has supported development of an IPE program at the Lebanese American University …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Friday, July 26, 2013:

Purpose: Adolescents with cancer are challenged not only by the biophysical and emotional changes of a normally developing person; also pain and distress from their treatment affecting their quality of life. Most of our knowledge about adolescent comfort experience is derived from parent and staff perspectives. Parents cannot speak everything about their children. There is more to know about them being the least investigated age group. This study explored the meaning and significance of comfort experienced by adolescents with metastatic or progressive cancer.

Methods: Descriptive phenomenology was used to uncover the comfort experience …

E-Portfolios: A Model For Quantitative And Qualitative Assessment Of Outcomes, Gail K. Baumlein Oct 2013

E-Portfolios: A Model For Quantitative And Qualitative Assessment Of Outcomes, Gail K. Baumlein

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013: In nursing education the use of portfolios has long been documented, primarily as a means of narrative reflection of student clinical experiences (Peacock, Murray, & Scott, 2011). Empirical literature depicts the use of e-portfolios as a showcase for professional development, and qualitative assessment (Endacott, Gray, Jasper, McMullan, Miller, Scholes, & Webb, 2004; Head, & Johnston, 2012). With the emergence of sophisticated e-portfolio software to support quantitative assessment, a new realm of possibilities has been revealed. This presentation describes an evidence-based, quantitative model for assessment of individual and aggregate outcomes, and comprehensive program evaluation. …

Impact Of Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders And Traumatic Brain Injury On Speech-Language Treatment: Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perspectives, Janis Whitney Neal Oct 2013

Impact Of Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders And Traumatic Brain Injury On Speech-Language Treatment: Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perspectives, Janis Whitney Neal

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Previous studies have associated traumatic brain injury (TBI) with higher rates of psychiatric disorders. This study investigated speech-language pathologists’ (SLPs) perspectives on the prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric disorders in the TBI population and its impact on speech-language treatment. Interviews were conducted with twelve SLPs working with a TBI population. Results revealed a lack of standard measures to assist SLPs in distinguishing between the symptoms of psychiatric disorders versus the neuropsychiatric symptoms of TBI. Also, results indicated the heavy reliance on a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive and individualized treatment for the TBI clientele, and the negative consequences of untreated psychiatric …

The Development Of A Discipline: Examination Of The Profession Of Gerontology And Gerontological Professionals, Tracey Gendron Oct 2013

The Development Of A Discipline: Examination Of The Profession Of Gerontology And Gerontological Professionals, Tracey Gendron

Theses and Dissertations

The growth of the aging population has warranted increased training and education to prepare professionals with the specific knowledge needed to best serve older adults. Gerontology, as an academic discipline, provides professionals with the conceptual knowledge and the skills necessary to address the complexities of working with a diverse aging population. Little research has been done of the characteristics of professionals both with and without formal education in gerontology that are working with the aging population. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of career motivation, job satisfaction, attitudes about aging, career commitment, and professional identity among …

Form, Fit And Flair: Considering The Design Doctorate, Laurene Vaughan, Andrew Morrison

Learn X Design Conference Series

Across the domains of design education the Design PhD is an area of much contemporary discussion and debate internationally. As the field of the discipline of design matures, so does its relationship with this qualification: its form, methods and relevance within and beyond the academy. In this paper, the authors critically reflect on their respective observations of differing models of undertaking design PhDs and subsequent models of submission and examination. Founded in their observations of the diversity of design PhDs pedagogically and structurally, the authors have begun a global mapping of current PhDs in design and are exploring how the …

“Hidden In Plain Sight”: Locating The Men And Women Of The 1954 Boston Special Youth Program, Richard K. Moule Jr., Scott H. Decker

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"The growing prevalence of longitudinal research in the social sciences, coupled with technological advances, provide new opportunities for researchers to more readily find participants from earlier studies. In addition, these advances necessitate the development of new strategies and methodologies for locating and building rapport with respondents. Drawing on previous methods of subject identification and location, this paper examines techniques for locating and interviewing former gang members from the 1954-1957 Special Youth Program in Roxbury, MA. In contrast to most longitudinal studies, (1) more than 50 years have passed since the original study with no contact with respondents in the interim, …

Motivation To Reduce Risk Behaviors While In Prison: Qualitative Analysis Of Interviews With Current And Formerly Incarcerated Women, Neetu Abad, Monique Carry, Jeffrey H. Herbst, Catherine I. Fogel

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Prison is an environment in which programs can be implemented to change harmful behaviors among high-risk populations. Incarcerated women experience high rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), yet little research has examined women’s motivation to reduce risky behaviors during incarceration. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with former and current women prisoners in two North Carolina correctional facilities and analyzed to identify barriers and facilitators of behavior change while in prison. Analyses revealed key motivators of behavior change: Viewing prison as a place to recover from past trauma, removing oneself from negative social networks, gaining access to needed …
