This paper’s thesis of human agency derived from the South Carolina Successful School Principalship Project’s (SCSSPP) findings. In these schools, principals had leveraged a variety of schoolwide initiatives to enact the vision that all students would be successful despite their rurality and poverty. These findings were the underlying design for two regional cross-district pilot programs. Known as Leadership 2.0 and Leadership 3.0, the development of agency was constructed through cognitive coaching and based on principals of adult learning. Initial evaluation of participants' first year reactions show consistently high perceptions of all aspects of the principals used for their professional learning.

Boundary Spanner Role Conflict In Public Urban Universities, Joseph Gauntner
Boundary Spanner Role Conflict In Public Urban Universities, Joseph Gauntner

Universities are increasingly seeking partnerships with external organizations for student learning and inter-organizational access to resources (Austin, 2010 Sandmann, 2006). The focus of such partnerships includes employee training, business development, affordable housing, community schools, community health centers, and other projects of reciprocal value to both the universities and community partners. Such work is frequently labeled university-community engagement (Carnegie Foundation, 2007). University staff members who build and sustain partnerships between their institutions and the broader community are referred to as boundary spanners (AASCU, 2004). Working as agents of the institution, a boundary spanner must be capable of working both sides of …

The purpose of this study was to identify possible factors that may contribute to the variations in effectiveness of foster care networks in a rural and an urban Ohio county. The effectiveness of the networks was assessed based on the success of the foster care networks to provide permanency for children who are placed in out-of-home care. For the purpose of this study the foster care network organizations in each county included the child welfare agencies, the juvenile courts, private foster care agencies and foster families. The child welfare agencies in each of Ohio counties operate independently, and their success …

African Food Security Urban Network
The results of AFSUN’s study of the food security situation of the poor in Gaborone show that not everyone is benefitting from Botswana’s strong and growing economy and that many of the urban poor experience extremely high levels of food insecurity. The study, which formed part of AFSUN’s baseline survey of 11 Southern African cities, collected data on a broad range of issues that affect household food insecurity and found that four out of five households in the surveyed areas in Gaborone reported severe or moderate food insecurity. Only 18% were either food secure or mildly food insecure. Income level …
Barriers To Post-Secondary Enrollment For Former Foster Youth, Brenda Morton
Barriers To Post-Secondary Enrollment For Former Foster Youth, Brenda Morton
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of current and former foster youth who faced challenges with the process of enrolling in post-secondary education. These participants illuminated the importance of teacher preparation programs that include awareness of the contexts of foster children and youth. Unfortunately, little is known about this group, leaving them vulnerable to significant barriers. Many foster youth aspire to a four-year bachelors degree, but need the help and support of high school teachers to get there. Teacher educators have the unique opportunity to prepare future teachers to work with students from such varying …

Expanding Assessment Of Fear Of Falling Among Older Adults With An Intellectual Disability: A Pilot Study To Assess The Value Of Proxy Responses, Sinead Foran, Mary Mccarron, Philip Mccallion
Social Welfare Faculty Scholarship
Introduction. Fear of falling (FOF) has emerged as an important health concern in older adults, yet it has rarely been investigated in people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Valid and reliable measurement approaches are a particular challenge. Scales that have been developed to measure FOF have not been validated for use with older people with ID and are not routinely used with proxy respondents. Method. 63 people comprised purposeful samples of 3 groups, people with ID , their nominated key workers , and additional support workers . Test-retest reliability and interrater reliability were assessed for using a dichotomous, single-item FOF screening …
Mental Disorders And Inequality In The United States: Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Disability On Employment And Income, Jessica K. Camp
Mental Disorders And Inequality In The United States: Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Disability On Employment And Income, Jessica K. Camp
Wayne State University Dissertations
Purpose: Existing research has shown that individuals with mental disorders experience inequality when looking at income, wages, and poverty in the United States. Still, there has been a dearth of literature exploring how individuals with mental disorders fare economically when exploring multiple inequalities. In this study disability, race, and gender are explored to examine differences in economic and labor market outcomes for Americans with mental disorders. This study hypothesizes that when looking at working-aged Americans, individuals with mental disorders will tend to experience the greatest amount of economic inequality when compared to individuals with non-mental disabilities and that these inequalities …
Gender Differences In Substance Use Treatment Utilization In The Year Prior To Deployment In Army Service Members, Nikki R. Wooten, Beth A. Mohr, Lena M. Lundgren, Rachel Sayko Adams, Elizabeth L. Merrick, Thomas V. Williams, Mary Jo Larson
Gender Differences In Substance Use Treatment Utilization In The Year Prior To Deployment In Army Service Members, Nikki R. Wooten, Beth A. Mohr, Lena M. Lundgren, Rachel Sayko Adams, Elizabeth L. Merrick, Thomas V. Williams, Mary Jo Larson
United States Army: Publications
Although military men have heavier drinking patterns, military women experience equal or higher rates of dependence symptoms and similar rates of alcohol-related problems as men at lower levels of consumption. Thus, gender may be important for understanding substance use treatment (SUT) utilization before deployment. Military health system data were analyzed to examine gender differences in both substance use diagnosis (SUDX) and SUT in 152,447 Army service members returning from deployments in FY2010. Propensity score analysis of probability of SUDX indicated that women had lower odds (AOR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86-0.96) of military lifetime SUDX. After adjusting for lifetime SUDX using …

This study was designed to explore the concept of virtual collaboration within the context of an online learning environment in an academic setting. Rodgers’ method of evolutionary concept analysis was used to provide a contextual view of the concept to identify attributes, antecedents, and consequences of virtual collaboration. Commonly used terms to describe virtual collaboration are collaborative and cooperative learning, group work, group interaction, group learning and teamwork. A constructivist pedagogy, group-based process with a shared purpose, support and web-based technology are required for virtual collaboration to take place. Consequences of virtual collaboration are higher order thinking and learning to …
The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia
The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
The number of Asian American families is on the rise. Asian American families are a diverse group. This chapter focuses on Asian American families that migrated to the United States in the last three decades. This chapter challenges the media’s depiction of them as a Model Minority. Because of this stereotype, many challenges that this group encounters may not gain adequate attention. The chapter examines their strengths and resiliency, along with the ecology of stress that influences family dynamics.

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this research was to survey the literature about the U.S. education system and synthesize the important conclusions that could be identified as the main features of the education system in general as they relate to student achievement. The criteria were set and the meta-analysis procedures were carefully followed. This process identified a collection of studies that were categorized into three main groups which were named components to indicate the purpose of the research: (a) calendar, (b) teaching method, and (c) extracurricular activity participation. After calculating the effect size of each of these components, they were entered …

How Can Counselling And Psychotherapy Educators Develop Credible Pathways Towards De-Colonization And Genuine Reconciliation In Australia?, Suzanne Jenkins
How Can Counselling And Psychotherapy Educators Develop Credible Pathways Towards De-Colonization And Genuine Reconciliation In Australia?, Suzanne Jenkins
Arts Conference Papers
Historically psychological theory and practice has focussed on promoting and maintaining Western privilege through Western knowledge and Western ways of knowing that deny the validity of Indigenous knowledge and culture. Psychology has been complicit in the colonising process and, as a dominant discourse, has a documented past that has been ethnocentric and has objectified, dehumanised and devalued those from culturally different groups (McLeod, 1997; Nystul, 2011). Counselling, as a profession emerged, not from any perceived need within human development but in response to economic and political demands (Glosoff, 2009). In more recent times, however, Counselling is increasingly being regarded as …
