A Model For The Hysteresis Observed In Gating Of Lysenin Channels, Eric Krueger, Radwan Al Faouri, Daniel Fologea, Ralph Henry, David Straub, Greg J. Salamo

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The pore-forming toxin lysenin self-inserts to form conductance channels in natural and artificial lipid membranes containing sphingomyelin. The inserted channels exhibit voltage regulation and hysteresis of the macroscopic current during the application of positive periodic voltage stimuli. We explored the bi-stable behavior of lysenin channels and present a theoretical approach for the mechanism of the hysteresis to explain its static and dynamic components. This investigation develops a model to incorporate the role of charge accumulation on the bilayer lipid membrane in influencing the channel conduction state. Our model is supported by experimental results and also provides insight into the temperature …

The Question Of Instability, Uncompetitiveness And Growth Slowdown Of Small Middle –Income Countries In The Euro Area, Marjan Senjur Dec 2013

The Question Of Instability, Uncompetitiveness And Growth Slowdown Of Small Middle –Income Countries In The Euro Area, Marjan Senjur

Economic and Business Review

The thesis of this article is that a small country with a below-average per capita income is in a disadvantaged macroeconomic position inside the euro area. Small middle-income countries expected an acceleration of growth by joining the EMU. They were hoping to catch up in the convergence process within the euro area. Yet things turned out differently. The crisis in 2009–2012 has led to excessive instability due to exogenous macroeconomic prices and the lack of a lender of last resort for sovereign debtors. Small MICs are more vulnerable to asymmetric shocks from abroad due to the ‘one-size-fits-all’ economic policy at …

Fit Gap Analysis – The Role Of Business Process Reference Models, Dejan Pajk, Andrej Kovačič Dec 2013

Fit Gap Analysis – The Role Of Business Process Reference Models, Dejan Pajk, Andrej Kovačič

Economic and Business Review

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems support solutions for standard business processes such as financial, sales, procurement and warehouse. In order to improve the understandability and efficiency of their implementation, ERP vendors have introduced reference models that describe the processes and underlying structure of an ERP system. To select and successfully implement an ERP system, the capabilities of that system have to be compared with a company’s business needs. Based on a comparison, all of the fits and gaps must be identified and further analysed. This step usually forms part of ERP implementation methodologies and is called fit gap analysis. The …

The Power Of Collaboration, Danielle Patton

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

Working collaboratively to improve and protect Dayton’s natural resources, educate the public, and devote ourselves to service are activities we, the River Stewards, have accomplished this semester. Alone, I could never move a picnic table (I completely lack the upper body strength). But with a group of 19 bright minded students, it would be no problem and this is just what my cohort and I did. The River Stewards took a service trip to SunWatch, an authentic Native American village close to the Great Miami River, and moved 15 very heavy picnic tables in no time flat. Our leader at …

Factors Influencing Survival Of White-Tailed Deer Fawns In Coastal South Carolina, J. Clint Mccoy, Stephen S. Ditchkoff, Joshua B. Raglin, Bret A. Collier, Charles Ruth

Faculty Publications

The social and environmental pressures exerted on white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus in the southeastern United States are dynamic. Understanding factors that contribute to neonatal white-tailed deer mortality is vital to population management. To determine survival rates and causes of mortality, we captured and radio-monitored neonate white-tailed deer in the coastal plain of South Carolina. Using date of birth, mass, sex, age, and year as predictor variables, we created a candidate set of survival models to evaluate which factors influenced daily survival rates. We captured and monitored 210 fawns and recorded 68 total mortalities (32.3%). We recorded few mortalities in 2006 …

A Comparison Of The Nutritional Quality Of Food Products Advertised In Grocery Store Circulars Of High- Versus Low-Income New York City Zip Codes, Danna Ethan, Corey H. Basch, Sonali Rajan, Lalitha Samuel, Rodney N. Hammond Dec 2013

A Comparison Of The Nutritional Quality Of Food Products Advertised In Grocery Store Circulars Of High- Versus Low-Income New York City Zip Codes, Danna Ethan, Corey H. Basch, Sonali Rajan, Lalitha Samuel, Rodney N. Hammond

Publications and Research

Grocery stores can be an important resource for health and nutrition with the variety and economic value of foods offered. Weekly circulars are a means of promoting foods at a sale price. To date, little is known about the extent that nutritious foods are advertised and prominently placed in circulars. This study’s aim was to compare the nutritional quality of products advertised on the front page of online circulars from grocery stores in high- versus low-income neighborhoods in New York City (NYC). Circulars from grocery stores in the five highest and five lowest median household income NYC zip codes were …

A Theoretical Analysis Of Iso9000 Suppliers, Chiaho Chang Dec 2013

A Theoretical Analysis Of Iso9000 Suppliers, Chiaho Chang

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper looks at the economic behavior of suppliers under different ISO9000 standards, especially that of ISO9001 and ISO9002. Considering the information asymmetry, given the same quality provided, the cost-reducing efforts of the ISO9001 SUPPLIER and ISO9002 SUPPLIER under a fixed, cost-plus contract are investigated. The result shows that the cost-reducing effort of the ISO9002 SUPPLIER is in line with the main manufacturer's expectations while the ISO9001 SUPPLIER is able to keep some of the information rent and exerts less effort. The bargaining power of the ISO9001 SUPPLIER is also stronger relative to that of the ISO9002 SUPPLIER. It is …

The Effects Of Nesting Environment On Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury, Laura Grace Rollins Dec 2013

The Effects Of Nesting Environment On Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury, Laura Grace Rollins

Graduate Masters Theses

Term neonates with hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury are at risk for devastating neurological sequelae. The objective of this study is to determine if altering the early environment for maternal care-taking impacts the immediate and long-term sequelae of HI offspring. The Rice-Vannucci model was used to induce HI in postnatal day (PND) 7 Long-Evans pups. Litters were assigned to a closed nest (CN) or normal standard housing (SH) condition. Neurobehavioral development, cognitive ability, and stress response were assessed to establish any benefits of the CN condition. Finally, postmortem brain tissue was analyzed for morphometric markers of injury.

Tingkat Pengungkapan Dan Penggunaan Derivatif Keuangan Dalam Aktivitas Penghindaran Pajak, Oktavia Oktavia, Dwi Martani

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether, in a case study of Indonesia, financial derivatives are used as a means of tax avoidance as literature shows that derivative users incline to avoid tax. Two samples treatment are conducted in examining the problem. Initially, using the sample all derivative users, this study does not find that derivative users are significantly related to tax avoidance. However, when the sample is separated into two groups based on the level of disclosure on financial derivatives, the results show otherwise. Firms with low level of disclosure on financial derivatives is more tax aggressive …
