Survey Of The Cancer Patient Experience With Oral Care Information, Debbie Mahre Jan 2013

Survey Of The Cancer Patient Experience With Oral Care Information, Debbie Mahre

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Cancer incidence continues to rise. Standard cancer management therapies are known to cause oral complications, such as mucositis (OM), that can range from mild to very severe. Severe OM can require interruption of treatment, and possibly hospitalization for IV rehydration, pain control, and nourishment. Utilizing good oral care practices during treatment has been shown effective to help limit severity and/or reduce duration of OM. Patient education on this concept, and on ideal products and self-care techniques are integral to patient implementation of supportive oral health practices. Unfortunately, patients may not receive comprehensive oral health education that promotes good oral health. …

A Holistic Approach To Mima Mound Prairie Restoration, Kristin R. Anicito Jan 2013

A Holistic Approach To Mima Mound Prairie Restoration, Kristin R. Anicito

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Invasive winter annual grass (IWAGs) abundance has increased throughout much of the western United States, with serious consequences for biodiversity and ecosystem function. While a variety of tools have been used to control IWAGS, they often fail to achieve the goal of creating a self-sustaining native plant community. Therefore, a major goal of my thesis has been to explore and test restoration approaches that might help realize such plant communities. These approaches include ecologically based invasive plant management (EBIPM) and assisted succession. EBIPM is a holistic approach that aims to restore ecological functions damaged by IWAGs with a combination of …

'Simple' Takes On The Supreme Court, Robert Tsai Jan 2013

'Simple' Takes On The Supreme Court, Robert Tsai

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This essay assesses black literature as a medium for working out popular understandings of America’s Constitution and laws. Starting in the 1940s, Langston Hughes’s fictional character, Jesse B. Semple, began appearing in the prominent black newspaper, the Chicago Defender. The figure affectionately known as “Simple” was undereducated, unsophisticated, and plain spoken - certainly to a fault according to prevailing standards of civility, race relations, and professional attainment. Butthese very traits, along with a gritty experience under Jim Crow, made him not only a sympathetic figure but also an armchair legal theorist. In a series of barroom conversations, Simple ably critiqued …

The Referendum Process In Maryland: Balancing Respect For Representative Government With The Right To Direct Democracy, Steven G. Shapiro

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article will examine the Maryland referendum petition process to determine whether any changes in the current law should or could be made. This includes whether the legislature should reverse the holding in Whitley, whether it should add additional requirements to and restrictions on the signature gathering process, and whether the percentage of voters needed for a successful challenge should be increased.

First, as a matter of policy, should the law be changed? For example, does it strike the proper balance between respect for the legislative process and allowing for more voices in legislative matters by the public at large? …

In Search Of Racial Justice: The Role Of The Prosecutor, Angela J. Davis

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article examines the role of prosecutors in establishing and maintaining racial disparities in the criminal justice system, and examines efforts of the Prosecution and Racial Justice Program of the Ve,:-a Institute of Justice to enact reform within prosecutors' offices. After providing an overview of the debate on causes of such racial disparities generally, the article examines how seemingly race neutral charging and plea-bargaining decisions by prosecutors can actually cause and perpetuate racial disparities. As a model for reforming such practices, the article evaluates and critiques the Prosecution and Racial Justice Program and makes recommendations for how this program can …

The Ambition And Transformative Potential Of Progressive Property, Ezra Rosser Jan 2013

The Ambition And Transformative Potential Of Progressive Property, Ezra Rosser

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The emerging progressive property school celebrates and finds its meaning in the social nature of property. Rejecting the idea that exclusion lies at the core of property law, progressive property scholars call for a reconsideration of the relationships owners and nonowners have with property and with each other. Despite these ambitions, progressive property scholarship has so far largely confined itself to questions of exclusion and access. This Essay argues that such an emphasis glosses over race-related acquisition and distribution problems that pervade American history and property law. The modest structural changes supported by progressive property scholars fail to account for …

The Landmark That Wasn't: A First Amendment Play In Five Acts Case Study And Commentaries, Stephen Wermiel

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

What follows is an original case study of our First Amendment law of free expression and how it is created by the Supreme Court. Drawing heavily on heretofore unpublished internal papers from the chambers of Justice William Brennan and other Justices, this Article reveals how the 1964 landmark decision in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan was once in serious jeopardy of being overruled. In the course of this discussion, and in their examination of the evolution of the Court’s decision in Dun & Bradstreet v. Greenmoss Builders (1985), the authors describe and analyze: (1) how and to what extent …

Promoting Language Access In The Legal Academy, Jayesh Rathod, Gillian Dutton, Beth Lyon, Deborah M. Weissman

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Since the 1960s, the United States government has paid increasing attention to the rights of language minorities and to the need for greater civic and political integration of these groups. With the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the issuance of Executive Orders, and intervention by the federal judiciary, progress has been made in the realm of language access. State and local courts have likewise taken steps (albeit imperfectly) to provide interpretation and translation assistance to Limited English Proficient persons. Most recently, responding to both lack of services and inconsistent practices, the American Bar Association has set out …

Kiobel V. Royal Dutch Petroleum: The Alien Tort Statute's Jurisdictional Universalism In Retreat, Kenneth Anderson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum (Shell), a long-running Alien Tort Statute (ATS) case brought by Nigerian plaintiffs alleging aiding and abetting liability against various multinational oil companies for human rights violations of the Nigerian government in the 1990s, including a non-US Shell corporation, first came before the US Supreme Court in the 2011-2012 term, following a sweeping Second Circuit holding that there was no "liability for corporations" under the ATS. In oral argument, however, several Justices asked a different question from corporate liability: noting that the case involved foreign plaintiffs, foreign defendants, and conduct taking place entirely on foreign sovereign …

Applying Simulation And Genetic Algorithm For Patient Appointment Scheduling Optimization, Yidong Peng Jan 2013

Applying Simulation And Genetic Algorithm For Patient Appointment Scheduling Optimization, Yidong Peng

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

In this study, we discuss the implementation of integrated simulation and genetic algorithm for patient scheduling optimization under two different settings, namely the "traditional" scheduling system and the "open access" scheduling system. Under the "traditional" setting, we propose a two-phase approach for designing a weekly scheduling template for outpatient clinics providing multiple types of services. Our results demonstrate that the two-phase approach can efficiently find the promising weekly appointment scheduling templates for outpatient clinics. Under the "open access" setting, we propose a discrete event simulation and genetic algorithm (DES-GA) approach to find the heuristic optimal scheduling template for the clinic …

Due to energy crisis and environmental concerns, alternative energy has attracted a lot of attention in both industry and academia. Biofuel is one type of renewable energy that can reduce the reliance on fossil fuel, and also help reduce environmental effect and provide social benefits. However, to deliver a competitive biofuel product requires a robust supply chain. The biofuel supply chain (BSC) consists of raw material sourcing, transporting of raw materials to pre-treatment and biorefinery sites, pre-treating the raw material, biofuel production, and transporting of the produced biofuel to the final demand zones. As uncertainties are involved throughout the supply …

Links Between Sexual Health Content And Teacher Characteristics In North Dakota's Secondary Schools, Kathrine Rose Christensen

Human Development and Family Science

Numerous studies indicate the ineffectiveness of abstinence-only education in preventing teen pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), yet many U.S. schools still rely on abstinence-only programming. North Dakota, the focus of this study, neither prevents nor requires contraception instruction in sexual health education classes, leaving the decision to include contraception instruction and other sexual health information up to the individual schools and teachers. For this study, a survey of sexual health teachers was used to determine the content of sexual health classes, teacher characteristics, and links between the two. Results indicate that teacher beliefs in program efficacy …

Population Size And Cultural Evolution In Nonindustrial Food-Producing Societies, M. Collard, A. Ruttle, B. Buchanan, Michael J. O'Brien

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

Modeling work suggests that population size affects cultural evolution such that larger populations can be expected to have richer and more complex cultural repertoires than smaller populations. Empirical tests of this hypothesis, however, have yielded conflicting results. Here, we report a study in which we investigated whether the subsistence toolkits of small-scale food-producers are influenced by population size in the manner the hypothesis predicts. We applied simple linear and standard multiple regression analysis to data from 40 nonindustrial farming and pastoralist groups to test the hypothesis. Results were consistent with predictions of the hypothesis: both the richness and the complexity …

How Can Physicians’ Knowledge Be Activated To Provide Better Healthcare? Explaining Electronic Health Record Adaptation By Physicians., Cherie Noteboom, Sajda Qureshi

Research & Publications

Despite the rising costs of healthcare and falling quality of care, the integration of EHR (Electronic Health Records) in supporting collaboration to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare remains a challenge. It appears that the physicians are at the center of this bottleneck. The literature suggests that the reasons for the limited use relate to policy, financial and usability considerations, but it does not provide an understanding of reasons for physicians' limited interaction and adaptation of EHR. Following an analysis of qualitative data, collected in a case study at a hospital using interviews, this research shows how a collaborative …
