Pirate Maps, Tattoos, And Flus: Using A Problem-Based Format To Teach Information Literacy Skills, Emily Buzicky, Kerri Shaffer Carter
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011
This workshop will introduce attendees to the basics of problem-based learning (PBL). Participants will have the opportunity to create a lesson plan for a PBL session while working in a PBL environment. The workshop will focus on creating learning objectives, creating PBL prompts, facilitating discussion, and leading a de-briefing session. PBL activities complement information literacy sessions because they ask the student to actively demonstrate competencies, and allow the instructor to act as a "guide on the side."

Problem-Solving Skills For Librarians, Cindy Batman, Lesley Tsuchiya, Megan Treseder
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011
Every time a librarian conducts a reference interview, does research for a patron, teaches a workshop or bibliographic instruction session, that librarian is modeling good problem solving skills. When the same librarian is faced with the challenge of a micromanager, a coworker who is a trouble maker, or team workers who are not working, immobility sets in. These problems seem insurmountable. The same discipline and strong learning skills that propelled the librarian through graduate school, the good written and oral presentation abilities, and the critical thinking demonstrated every time librarians answer a question, are still there. Librarians are just little …

Congenital disorders of glycosylation are a group of metabolic disorders with an expansive and highly variable clinical presentation caused by abnormal glycosylation of proteins and lipids. Dolichol kinase (DOLK) catalyzes the final step in biosynthesis of dolichol phosphate (Dol-P), which is the oligosaccharide carrier required for protein N-glycosylation. Human DOLK deficiency, also known as DOLK-CDG or CDG-Im, results in a syndrome that has been reported to manifest with dilated cardiomyopathy of variable severity. A male neonate born to non-consanguineous parents of Palestinian origin presented with dysmorphic features, genital abnormalities, talipes equinovarus, and severe, refractory generalized seizures. Additional multi-systemic manifestations developed …

STEM fields in the US continue to be dominated by people whose cultural backgrounds are White, English-speaking, and middle class (National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council, 2009). Many reasons have been offered to explain this phenomenon: Students’ backgrounds may include worldviews, beliefs, and communicative practices that do not cohere with those practiced in STEM classrooms (Aikenhead & Jegede, 1999; Lee, 1999); instructional materials may present STEM fields as a-cultural, decontextualized practices with no evident connection to students’ lives and communities, such as the routine completion of numerical exercises (O’Halloran, 2005); students’ identities—shaped in part by their desired life …

Imagine a world where someone’s personal information is constantly compromised, where federal government entities AKA Big Brother always knows what anyone is Googling, who an individual is texting, and their emoticons on Twitter. Government entities have been doing this for years; they never cared if they were breaking the law or their moral compass of human dignity. Every day the Federal government blatantly siphons data with programs from the original ECHELON to the new series like PRISM and Xkeyscore so they can keep their tabs on issues that are none of their business; namely, the personal lives of millions. Simultaneous Energy Harvesting And Vibration Control Of Tall Buildings Using Electricity-Generating Tuned Mass Dampers, Xiudong Tang
Simultaneous Energy Harvesting And Vibration Control Of Tall Buildings Using Electricity-Generating Tuned Mass Dampers, Xiudong Tang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Tall buildings, slender towers and long-span bridges are very susceptible to dynamic load from wind, and consequently vibrations are persistent in these civil structures during daily operation, which are serious concerns to both engineers and architects for the protection of the structure safety and occupant comfort. In order to mitigate the vibration, different approaches have been proposed, among which Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) are one of the most preferable and have been widely used in practice. Instead of dissipating the vibration energy into heat waste via the viscous damping element, we proposed an innovative structural vibration control method in this …

An Argument And Plan For Promoting The Teaching And Learning Of Neglected Tropical Diseases, Kevin M. Bonney
Publications and Research
Neglected tropical diseases constitute a significant public health burden, affecting over one billion people globally, yet this group of diseases is underrepresented in the appropriation of both monetary and intellectual capital for developing improved therapies and public health campaigns. The topic of neglected tropical diseases has been similarly marginalized in the biology classrooms of our nation’s high schools and colleges, despite offering an opportunity to teach and learn about a diverse area of microbiology with far-reaching public health, social, and economic implications. Discussed herein is an argument for increasing the representation of neglected tropical diseases in microbiology education as a …
What Happened To My Bell-Bottoms?: How Things That Were Never Going To Change Have Sometimes Changed Anyway, And How Studying History Can Help Us Make Sense Of It All, Craig Harline
BYU Studies
Craig Harline explains perhaps the most valuable and fundamental benefit of studying history is the insight it can offer into change, including change that people once thought would never occur. What can be learned from such changes by people of the present, as they argue about potential changes in their own world? Harline offers historical examples of change in Western Christianity regarding acceptable views of language, left-handedness, sacred music, slavery, interracial relations, and usury, and viewing them in the context of changes still being heavily or somewhat debated by Christians, such as women's role, evolution, and more. He shows that …

One of the sources says that Islam has come to Malay World in eleventh century of Masihi and this is supported by the discovery of gravestone in Champa, Gresik Java as well as Kedah together with the discovery of stone monument in Terengganu dated 1303 Masihi. This situation is exposing the phenomenon of Islam’s growth in the Peninsular Malaysia earlier from the Borneo Isle where it has been receiving Islam during the 15th century of Masihi intermediated by al-Makhdum. Thus, this argumentation is at least influencing the history and the situation of Islam’s development of the Borneo especially in Sabah …

D.A.R.E. Day! Implementing Evidence-Based Drug Education In An Adventist Educational Setting, Harvey J. Burnett Jr.
Faculty Publications
Since 1983, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program has become one of the most popular and widely used school-based prevention programs to help empower youth to make responsible choices about drug use as well as to deal with violent behaviors such as bullying. Because young people in both Adventist and non-Adventist circles are often exposed to drugs through their peers, the media, or family members, incorporating programs like D.A.R.E. within the Seventh-day Adventist educational environment can provide a vital tool in equipping our young people to make responsible and safe choices about drugs.
