Francisella Tularensis: Interactions With Hepatocytes And Pathways For The Acquisition Of Iron, Cindy Arisa Thomas-Charles

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Francisella tularensis: Interactions with Hepatocytes and Pathways for the Acquisition of Iron by Cindy A. Thomas-Charles Doctor of Philosophy in Genetics Stony Brook University 2013 Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative, facultative intracellular bacterium and the causative agent of tularemia. Due to its high virulence, this organism has been classified as a Tier 1 select agent of bioterrorism. Regardless of the route of inoculation, the lungs, spleen, and liver are major targets of infection. Furthermore, this organism replicates to high numbers in hepatocytes, the predominant cells in the liver. Factors that mediate the uptake by and replication …

Fate Of Nitrogen During Submarine Groundwater Discharge Into Long Island North Shore Embayments, Caitlin Young Dec 2013

Fate Of Nitrogen During Submarine Groundwater Discharge Into Long Island North Shore Embayments, Caitlin Young

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Long Island Sound experiences periods of hypoxia attributed to eutrophication, but the magnitude of nitrogen contributed to surface water via submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) entering Long Island's north shore embayments is not well characterized. The coastal aquifer, where fresh groundwater mixes with saline coastal water is termed the subterranean estuary (STE). Advective flow combined with sharp salinity and dissolved oxygen gradients make the STE a zone of intense geochemical cycling. However, the fate of nitrogen during transit through Long island embayment STEs is not well understood, particularly how sediment heterogeneity influences nitrogen attenuation in discharge zones. Nitrate attenuation mechanisms, principally …

Juegos De Resignificaciã³N: Espacio, Violencia E Intimidad En Tres Novelas De Roberto Bolaã±O | Juegos De Resignificación: Espacio, Violencia E Intimidad En Tres Novelas De Roberto Bolaño, Jessica Graf

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Since the late 1990s, the work of Chilean author Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003) has attracted an ever-growing amount of critical and popular interest. His skyrocket ride to the forefront of the literary universe was ironically preceded by many years at the margins of the field, and this background clearly informs his writing. In his novels and short stories, Bolaño undertakes the representation of marginal characters whose stories unfold in restricted, liminal spaces. Bolaño reimagines these spaces to delve into a dialogue between his characters and the circumstances and forces that rule their worlds. He grants importance to his underdog figures and …

Translational Symmetry Breaking In Materials: First-Principles Wannier Function Study, Chia-Hui Lin Dec 2013

Translational Symmetry Breaking In Materials: First-Principles Wannier Function Study, Chia-Hui Lin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The spatial periodicity of the crystal structure dictates the electronic band structure theory as the fundamental paradigm in solid state physics. The original translation in materials is commonly broken with an enlarged unit cell required by spontaneously developed long-range order or multiple competing periodicities. The former happens in the systems undergoing the phase transition to antiferromagnetism, charge/spin density waves or lattice distortion. The latter originates from the intrinsic arrangement of the multiple atom system or the externally introduced impurities. The emergence of the broken symmetry can significantly modify the electronic structure, shift the chemical potential, and change the electric, magnetic …

Holographic Pomeron, Alexander Stoffers Dec 2013

Holographic Pomeron, Alexander Stoffers

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis discusses the approach to hadronic scattering at high energies and the description of the pomeron within holographic QCD. Based on a stringy Schwinger mechanism in curved space, the pomeron emerges through the exchange of closed strings between two dipoles and yields Regge behavior for the elastic scattering amplitude. Our holographic result for the dipole-dipole cross section and the wee-dipole density in the conformal limit are shown to be identical in form to the BFKL pomeron result when the non-critical string transverse dimension is $D_\perp=3$. Thus, we have obtained an evolution for the wee-dipole density as a function of …

Behavioral Polarization And Partisan Sorting: How Identity Alignment Drives Polarized Politics, Lilliana Hall Mason Dec 2013

Behavioral Polarization And Partisan Sorting: How Identity Alignment Drives Polarized Politics, Lilliana Hall Mason

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Partisan sorting is capable of driving mass political behavior. As work in social psychology demonstrates, social identities such as party, ideology, religion and race are powerful motivators of bias, activism and anger. Furthermore, when multiple social identities come into alignment, this alignment strengthens the effects of these identities on behavior, and strengthens the cognitive and motivational bases of ingroup bias and negative emotion by increasing the perceived differences between the groups, regardless of the true differences between them. Thus the effect of political identities and the alignment between them can occur independently of the extremity or importance of an individual's …

Multi-Dimensional Workload Analysis And Synthesis For Modern Storage Systems, Vasily Tarasov Dec 2013

Multi-Dimensional Workload Analysis And Synthesis For Modern Storage Systems, Vasily Tarasov

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Modern computer systems produce and process an overwhelming amount of data at an increasing rates. The performance of storage hardware components, however, cannot keep up with the required speed at a practical cost. To mitigate this discrepancy, storage vendors incorporate many workload-driven optimizations in their products. Emerging applications cause workload patterns to change rapidly and significantly. One of the prominent examples is a rapid shift towards virtualized environments. Virtual machines mix I/O streams from different applications and perturb applications' access patterns. In addition, modern users demand more convenience features, such as deduplication, snapshotting, and encryption. Stringent performance requirements, changing I/O …

Grand Multiparity: Is It Still A Risk In Pregnancy?, Andrew H. Mgaya, Siriel N. Massawe, Hussein Kidanto, Hans N. Mgaya

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Background The association of grand multiparity and poor pregnancy outcome has not been consistent for decades. Classifying grand multiparous women as a high-risk group without clear evidence of a consistent association with adverse outcomes can lead to socioeconomic burdens to the mother, family and health systems. We compared the maternal and perinatal complications among grand multiparous and other multiparous women in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Methods A cross-sectional study was undertaken at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH). A standard questionnaire enquired the following variables: demographic characteristics, antenatal profile and detected obstetric risk factors as well as maternal and neonatal risk …

Protecting The Faithful From Their Faith: A Proposal For Snake-Handling In West Virginia, Robert W. Kerns Jr. Dec 2013

Protecting The Faithful From Their Faith: A Proposal For Snake-Handling In West Virginia, Robert W. Kerns Jr.

West Virginia Law Review

In the hills of Appalachia sing the hymns of the faithful, preaching a belief in the handling of snakes to prove loyalty to God. In West Virginia, persons may take up poisonous reptiles and pass them amidst crowds in the name of religion without legal restraints. While other states prohibit snake- handling in the name of safety, West Virginia law remains void on the issue. This Article introduces the practice of snake-handling and examines the risks posed by taking up poisonous animals whose bite may cause serious injury or death. This Article then suggests how the West Virginia law may …

The Paradoxes Of Restitution, Mark A. Edwards Dec 2013

The Paradoxes Of Restitution, Mark A. Edwards

West Virginia Law Review

Restitution following mass dispossession is often considered both ideal and impossible. Why? This Article identifies two previously unnamed paradoxes that undermine the possibility of restitution: the time-unworthiness paradox and the collective responsibility paradox. After developing these ideas, the Article examines them in the context of a particularly difficult and intractable case of dispossession and restitution. The Article draws upon interviews with restitution claimants whose stories reveal the paradoxes of restitution.

Racial Differences In Human Platelet Par4 Reactivity Reflect Expression Of Pctp And Mir-376c., Leonard Edelstein, Lukas M Simon, Raúl Teruel Montoya, Michael Holinstat, Edward S Chen, Angela Bergeron, Xianguo Kong, Srikanth Nagalla, Narla Mohandas, David E Cohen, Jing-Fei Dong, Chad Shaw, Paul Bray

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Racial differences in the pathophysiology of atherothrombosis are poorly understood. We explored the function and transcriptome of platelets in healthy black (n = 70) and white (n = 84) subjects. Platelet aggregation and calcium mobilization induced by the PAR4 thrombin receptor were significantly greater in black subjects. Numerous differentially expressed RNAs were associated with both race and PAR4 reactivity, including PCTP (encoding phosphatidylcholine transfer protein), and platelets from black subjects expressed higher levels of PC-TP protein. PC-TP inhibition or depletion blocked PAR4- but not PAR1-mediated activation of platelets and megakaryocytic cell lines. miR-376c levels were differentially expressed by race and …

Effects Of Energy Drinks On Metabolism At Rest And During Submaximal Exercise In Adult Males And Females, Peter Deng Dec 2013

Effects Of Energy Drinks On Metabolism At Rest And During Submaximal Exercise In Adult Males And Females, Peter Deng

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

INTRODUCTION: Energy drinks have become the soft drink of this millennium. They are commonly available everywhere including stores, schools and fitness centers. Yet, the effects of energy drinks, on metabolism at rest and during exercise, receive little attention. Ingredients in energy drinks such as caffeine and taurine are sympathetic stimulants and increase heart rate and blood pressure. However, it is unclear as to whether or not these effects actually improve exercise performance. Redbull is an example of an energy drink that is often consumed with the idea that it will improve performance during an exercise workout. PURPOSE The purpose of …

The Value Of Solar Tariff: Net Metering 2.0, Karl R. Rábago Dec 2013

The Value Of Solar Tariff: Net Metering 2.0, Karl R. Rábago

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Increasing numbers of customers are installing solar photovoltaic systems on their homes and businesses. As module and system costs decline, customer demand grows, and more businesses organize around the solar opportunity, it is time to revisit the tariff structure under which these systems integrate with and operate on the electric grid. This article details a novel approach to a distributed solar tariff, called the “Value of Solar” tariff (“VOST”), that addresses important utility and customer issues, and offers some significant improvements over traditional net metering approaches. There is a saying in the venture capital world to the effect that, “It …

Design And Construction Of An Omni-Directional Soccer Ball Thrower, Andrew James Marquette

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Introduction

We are ODST the Omni-Directional Soccer Ball Thrower team which designed the soccer ball launching machine. Working in direct correlation with the project sponsor John Meade from Athlonic Sports this is the report outlining the soccer ball thrower. John from Athlonic Sports came up with the overall project and initial project vision. There are soccer ball launching machines on the market but lacking mobility, not amiable and are heavy. The design needed to be mobile, amiable, lightweight, and have a soccer ball capacity incorporated into the machine. This will allow coaches to repeatability place the soccer ball in certain …

Investigating The Importance Of The N-Terminal Negative Residues In Human Prmt1, Brooke Siler Dec 2013

Investigating The Importance Of The N-Terminal Negative Residues In Human Prmt1, Brooke Siler

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Many essential physiological pathways, such as cell proliferation, gene expression, and cardiovascular health are regulated by Protein Arginine Methyltransferases (PRMTs) through methylation of arginine residues in protein substrates. Understanding how PRMTs interact with their substrates is pivotal to understanding the biological role of these enzymes, and fundamental to the goal of identifying possible sites to be inhibited through drug therapy. Natural variations in the N-terminus of the PRMTl enzymes and data collected in our lab suggest that the N-terminus is important for activity and/or the binding of protein substrates. Preliminary data collected had led us to hypothesize that the negatively …

The Importance Of Developmentally Appropriate Practice In Early Childhood Education, Jeneille Larsen Dec 2013

The Importance Of Developmentally Appropriate Practice In Early Childhood Education, Jeneille Larsen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

It is important for educators, parents and families to know how children learn and what options of early education and curriculum are available. Three theorists and their theories on how children learn and obtain information, the NAEYC's statement on Developmentally Appropriate Practice and various preschool's throughout the world and their methods and curriculum is discussed. A "perfect" preschool method is then proposed using all the previous information to formulate the ideal preschool and curriculum.

Agco Corporation Valuation, Sean Michael Miller Dec 2013

Agco Corporation Valuation, Sean Michael Miller

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This paper will discuss the excellent growth potential that AGCO Corporation faces and the reason that this company's stock is rated as a hold position. AGCO has seen tremendous progress and is in an industry that shows that a growing world population will continue to need food and more efficient ways to create food. However, based on sensitivities of assumptions in the models presented herein and on a current share price that is already close to my assumed fair value I do not issue a buy recommendation.
