"You'd Better Get In There And Be The Advocate": Parents Of Gender Nonconforming Children's Perspectives On Support, Samantha Schofield

Human Development and Family Science

In this project parents of gender nonconforming children shared their perspectives on finding emotional support for themselves and their family. Ten women-identified mothers participated in semi-structured interviews via online chat or phone. Three research questions produced eight categories, each with multiple themes which illustrate these parents' experience. Main findings include the centrality of the internet in a parent's search for support, the importance of community, advocacy efforts of parents to support their child and other families, and both personal and professional qualities that are characteristic of supportive people. From reflections on what has been most helpful to these participants, clinical …

Applying Simulation And Genetic Algorithm For Patient Appointment Scheduling Optimization, Yidong Peng Jan 2013

Applying Simulation And Genetic Algorithm For Patient Appointment Scheduling Optimization, Yidong Peng

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

In this study, we discuss the implementation of integrated simulation and genetic algorithm for patient scheduling optimization under two different settings, namely the "traditional" scheduling system and the "open access" scheduling system. Under the "traditional" setting, we propose a two-phase approach for designing a weekly scheduling template for outpatient clinics providing multiple types of services. Our results demonstrate that the two-phase approach can efficiently find the promising weekly appointment scheduling templates for outpatient clinics. Under the "open access" setting, we propose a discrete event simulation and genetic algorithm (DES-GA) approach to find the heuristic optimal scheduling template for the clinic …

None But The Bravest Of Men: Violence And Popular Sovereignty In Revolutionary War Veteran Narratives., James M. Greene Jan 2013

None But The Bravest Of Men: Violence And Popular Sovereignty In Revolutionary War Veteran Narratives., James M. Greene

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Starting with Ethan Allen's 1778 captivity narrative, the Revolutionary War veteran narrative became a small, but popular, subgenre of early American life writing. In this project, I argue that the genre encouraged a myth of the republican citizen-soldier in the early United States that supported the delegation of popular sovereignty toward the institutional management of a strong central government. As a synecdoche for a continental body politic, the Revolutionary veteran appeared as both the source of sovereignty as a citizen and an agent of this authority as a soldier. The genre has typically been understood as one that appeals for …

Assessing Microbial Stability And Quality Of Green Beans Using Various Home Canning Methods, Jenny Kuchynski Jan 2013

Assessing Microbial Stability And Quality Of Green Beans Using Various Home Canning Methods, Jenny Kuchynski

Food Safety

Today many consumers follow processing methods recommended either from family members or the internet, which they interpret as being safe. Processing temperature profiles, survival of B. stearothermophilus spores, texture, and color of green beans processed under four home canning methods were assessed. The products were processed using pressure, boiling water bath, steam, or oven canning methods. Pressure canning produced the greatest microbial reductions but this method resulted in the lowest bean quality. The boiling water bath, steam, and oven canning were found to be less safe because the product temperature never achieved 100°C and the resulting microbial counts, >1.7 log …

Synthesis And Antioxidant, Anticancer, And Antimicrobial Activities Of Palmityl Ester Derivative Of Carnosic Acid, Asharani Prasad

Food Safety

Carnosic acid (CA) along with carnosol (CAR) is the strongest phenolic diterpene antioxidants (PDAs) present in rosemary plant. However, CA has low antioxidant activity in emulsion-type food system due to its polar nature. The identification and characterization of the anticancer and antimicrobial properties of natural products and their semisynthetic derivative such as that of CA and CAR have received significant interest over the years. The goals of this research were to synthesize lipophilic palmityl derivative (PE) of CA and study its antioxidant activity in bulk and emulsified corn oil. Anticancer properties against CCRF-CEM, K-562 and P388D1 leukemia cell lines and …

An Environmental History Of Malawi's 'Island In The Sky': The Mulanje Cedar And Imperial Forestry In British Nyasaland, 1890-1964., Kathleen J. Fichtel Jan 2013

An Environmental History Of Malawi's 'Island In The Sky': The Mulanje Cedar And Imperial Forestry In British Nyasaland, 1890-1964., Kathleen J. Fichtel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Mulanje cedar is a unique and endangered tree that is found only within the confines of the Mt. Mulanje Forest Reserve in southeastern Malawi. This dissertation examines the relationship between scientific forestry as introduced by British experts and the role and status of the endangered cedar. The British, like forest experts and other natural scientists today, believed the tree to be in danger of imminent demise. Economic expediency made it so that the tree was harvested by colonial officials from the beginning though they attempted to replace what they had taken. This did not work. Throughout the past century, …

Why Judges Should Not Make Refugee Law: Australia's Malaysia Solution And The Refugee Convention, Anthony Pastore Jan 2013

Why Judges Should Not Make Refugee Law: Australia's Malaysia Solution And The Refugee Convention, Anthony Pastore

Chicago Journal of International Law

In a 2011 decision, the High Court of Australia effectively incorporated an international treaty into a domestic statute. The case involved a refugee swap deal, called the "Malaysia Solution," between Australia and Malaysia, which the Australian government hoped would deter asylum seekers from making the dangerous overseas voyage to Australia. However, some of these asylum seekers argued that the Malaysia Solution violated the Migration Act, an Australian immigration statute. The plaintiff proposed an interpretation of the immigration statute that incorporated elements of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, most notably the principle of "non-refoulement." A majority of the …

The Berne Convention's Flexible Fixation Requirement: A Problematic Provision For User-Generated Content, Elizabeth White Jan 2013

The Berne Convention's Flexible Fixation Requirement: A Problematic Provision For User-Generated Content, Elizabeth White

Chicago Journal of International Law

The Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works sets forth an international standard for copyright protection. However, the fixation provision directs signatories to prescribe works subject to a fixation requirement for copyright protection however they choose. This provision of the Convention and the corresponding legislation that has been generated are of particular relevance to the debate over the protection of user-generated content (UGC). UGC, which has become popular on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, raises an important question for the fixation standard. Specifically, it is not clear whether or not UGC is fixed, and therefore …

Depoliticizing Sovereign Wealth Funds Through International Arbitration, Meg Lippincott Jan 2013

Depoliticizing Sovereign Wealth Funds Through International Arbitration, Meg Lippincott

Chicago Journal of International Law

Since their inception in the 1950s, Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) have dramatically expanded with the purpose of investing government revenue and maximizing returns for states with surplus funds. While SWF investments benefit their sovereign owners and can bring stability and growth to the economies the) invest in, concerns about the use of investments for political gains and about the defense of national security have led to calls for regulation of SWF investment worldwide. But rather than entangle these investments in a series of varied and complex domestic law solutions, this Comment argues that SWF investment can be effectively monitored through …

Urban Transitions: Making Connections Between Transportation To The Livable Environment, Adam Olson Jan 2013

Urban Transitions: Making Connections Between Transportation To The Livable Environment, Adam Olson

Landscape Architecture Theses

The dependence on personal vehicles for transportation continues to grow for Americans. This has changed the shape of our cities toward automobile oriented transportation over the past decades. In return cities have been designed to be vehicle friendly causing higher automobile traffic and lower pedestrian oriented neighborhoods; resulting in the expansion of the cities beyond the sustainable boundaries which depletes more agricultural lands and natural resources. This study explores the potential options available to reduce the automobile dependency and enhance multi-modal transportation within urban cores. This has been done by evaluating various case studies and their relevant implementations. This research …

Promoted Ecological Migration: Preserving San Francisco Bay’S Tidal Wetlands, J. Louie Scheffler Jan 2013

Promoted Ecological Migration: Preserving San Francisco Bay’S Tidal Wetlands, J. Louie Scheffler

Landscape Architecture Theses

The intent of this research is to preserve and increase the resiliency of the native landscape in and around San Jose, California in regards to natural and man induced changes. Habitat near San Jose has been suffering from a loss in biodiversity since colonization by Europeans in the late 1700’s. Traditionally for urban areas, the outward rural edge contains the highest level of endemic species and biodiversity. These levels drop at a steady rate while approaching the urban center. The less diverse an ecosystem is the less productive it becomes. This is important since economic well being is intrinsically tied …

The Transitional Community: Integrating Students Into The Community Of St. Joseph, Mn, Kyle Krueger Jan 2013

The Transitional Community: Integrating Students Into The Community Of St. Joseph, Mn, Kyle Krueger

Landscape Architecture Theses

Community design’s primary benefactors are the home owners and children forgetting about the young adults of the community. In some towns, but especially college towns, the population of young adults is the majority and not having these young adults interacting with the community can have a negative effect. By integrating young adults into the St. Joseph, MN urban landscape they will improve the city’s cultural identity as well as their own self efficacy. Through case study analysis and observations this study will attempt to integrate young adults within their communities utilizing their full potential.

White And Black, No Room For Gray: Why We Need Contrast To Be Green, Richard Aubol Jan 2013

White And Black, No Room For Gray: Why We Need Contrast To Be Green, Richard Aubol

Landscape Architecture Theses

The American Dream is to have a good job in the city, a house and family on your own parcel in a good suburb and nice car or three in the driveway; the bigger the property the better. When one looks at the modern city in plain view, the largest area of developed land is devoted to residential use. It is the American Dream according to this standard that drives the dissipating and unsustainable sprawl of cities (commercial, civic and other developments catch up with pioneering residential areas). There usually simply isn’t room for everyone to have their own exclusive …

The Human Senses: Designing Beyond Intuition, April Lipatan Jan 2013

The Human Senses: Designing Beyond Intuition, April Lipatan

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis project will explore how multi-sensory experiences can be merged with landscape architecture as a supplement to communicate the meaning of place. The problem of landscape architects not fully understanding the senses and their processes needs to be addressed in order to create designs that are beyond our intuition. Landscape architects can better communicate the experiences humans have with built environments by better understanding how the senses work as communication tools. The problem is the lack of knowledge on the senses in this field. Landscape architects have the capacity to integrate humans into spatial elements creating meaningful places, and …

4th And Sustainable: A Balanced Design Approach For The Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant (Arden Hills, Mn), Zach Johnson

Landscape Architecture Theses

With a lack of appreciation and the underestimation of the importance and benefits a sustainable ecosystem can provide in today’s society, it has become a topic that needs to be tended to. A great way to approach the design of sustainable sites, is to follow the guidelines of The Sustainable Sites Initiative(SITES), as well as find a project that can utilize them, and raise awareness in the publics eye. With the large budget and exposure a stadium receives, it is a strong development type to pair with the guidelines for SITES. This pairing can positively regenerate both sustainable ecosystems and …
