Sustainable Development And The Issue Of Water In The Kagera Region Of Tanzania, Teresa M. Dresner Dec 2013

Sustainable Development And The Issue Of Water In The Kagera Region Of Tanzania, Teresa M. Dresner

Theses & Dissertations

Over the last five decades, an abundance of research on sustainable development has emerged in multiple disciplinary areas, but few studies on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability have examined water issues for rural communities. Consequently, the purpose of this case study was to understand how a group of rural women from the Kagera region in Tanzania perceived and experienced sustainable development as a result of their improved access to water. The following central questions of the study sought to explore the local meanings of sustainable development and improved water sources: (a) How was life of rural women …

From Sex For Pleasure To Sex For Parenthood: How The Law Manufactures Mothers, Beth A. Burkstrand-Reid Dec 2013

From Sex For Pleasure To Sex For Parenthood: How The Law Manufactures Mothers, Beth A. Burkstrand-Reid

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

As soon as sperm enter a woman, so do law and politics, or so the decades-long disputes surrounding abortion suggest. Now, however, renewed debates surrounding contraceptives show legal and political interference with women’s sexual and reproductive autonomy may actually precede the sperm. This Article argues that, increasingly, women even thinking about having sex are defined socially and legally as “mothers.” Via this broad definition of who is a “mother,” the State extends its reach into women’s decision-making throughout their reproductive lifetime.

This Article argues that the State simultaneously devalues women’s choices to have sex for pleasure, which this Article calls …

Multiple Hypotheses Testing Procedures In Clinical Trials And Genomic Studies, Qing Pan Dec 2013

Multiple Hypotheses Testing Procedures In Clinical Trials And Genomic Studies, Qing Pan

Epidemiology Faculty Publications

We review and compare multiple hypothesis testing procedures used in clinical trials and those in genomic studies. Clinical trials often employ global tests, which draw an overall conclusion for all the hypotheses, such as SUM test, Two-Step test, Approximate Likelihood Ratio test (ALRT), Intersection-Union Test (IUT), and MAX test. The SUM and Two-Step tests are most powerful under homogeneous treatment effects, while the ALRT and MAX test are robust in cases with non-homogeneous treatment effects. Furthermore, the ALRT is robust to unequal sample sizes in testing different hypotheses. In genomic studies, stepwise procedures are used to draw marker-specific conclusions and …

Economic Cycles And Their Synchronization: A Survey Of Spectral Properties, Lisa Sella, G. Vivaldo, A. Groth, M. Ghil Dec 2013

Economic Cycles And Their Synchronization: A Survey Of Spectral Properties, Lisa Sella, G. Vivaldo, A. Groth, M. Ghil

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The present work applies several advanced spectral methods to the analysis of macroeconomic fluctuations in three countries of the European Union: Italy, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. We focus here in particular on singular-spectrum analysis (SSA), which provides valuable spatial and frequency information of multivariate data and that goes far beyond a pure analysis in the time domain. The spectral methods discussed here are well established in the geosciences and life sciences, but not yet widespread in quantitative economics. In particular, they enable one to identify and describe nonlinear trends and dominant cycles | including seasonal and interannual components …

The Dawn Of Italian Industry In Argentina: Pirelli In Buenos Aires (1898-1910), Veronica Ronchi Dec 2013

The Dawn Of Italian Industry In Argentina: Pirelli In Buenos Aires (1898-1910), Veronica Ronchi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

With a great vocation for internationalization, Pirelli begins expanding in Argentina in the final years of the nineteenth century. The first step is the establishment of a commercial chain followed by the construction of a factory started in 1910. Essential for the growth of the enterprise is the strong bond to Italian culture that characterizes Alberto Pirelli's proposals for the Argentine soil, from the international exhibition in Buenos Aires in 1910 to the launch of Pirelli within the Compañía Italo-Argentina de Electricidad, together with other major Italian companies, the following year. The rise of Pirelli will continue, without interruptions, up …

The Global Emission Game: On The Impact Of Strategic Interactions Between Countries On The Existence And The Properties Of Nash Equilibria, Mélanie Heugues Dec 2013

The Global Emission Game: On The Impact Of Strategic Interactions Between Countries On The Existence And The Properties Of Nash Equilibria, Mélanie Heugues

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In a context of laissez-faire, the propositions established in this paper shed light on the evolution of the problem of greenhouse gas (GHG) accumulation in the atmosphere for each type of strategic behaviour resulting from countries’ interconnection on global markets. In a framework of strong economic interdependencies, they show the potential consequences of the free trade arrangements on the environment and question the idea that free trade liberalisation should necessarily lead to an increase in countries’ welfare. This paper provides an exhaustive typology of countries’ strategic behaviours and a strong static comparative analysis with regard to the exogenous parameters of …

“I Am Not Afraid Of The Gallows” : The Public Executions Of Six Pirates In Puritan New England, Mary Bogart Dec 2013

“I Am Not Afraid Of The Gallows” : The Public Executions Of Six Pirates In Puritan New England, Mary Bogart

HIST 4800 Boston (Herndon)

This research analyzes the trial and execution of six men accused of piracy, robbery, and murder in 1704, as it relates to the objectives of Puritan leaders. The entire trial and execution process was held in public for anyone to bare witness. Puritan magistrates oversaw the process while recording both in some detail to be later published to the public. I breakdown and critically analyze the story each of the three publications tells to further assess the motives of the Puritans of this era.

Through the analysis of the 1700s publications and previous research conduct by historians Masur, Cohen, Bosco, …

Religious Multicultural Competence Amongst Dance/Movement Therapists, Jaclyn Abramson Dec 2013

Religious Multicultural Competence Amongst Dance/Movement Therapists, Jaclyn Abramson

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this study was to understand how dance/movement therapists, with BC-DMT or R-DMT credentials, acquire, foster, and perceive their own religious multicultural competence. The research question was how do dance/movement therapists develop religious multicultural competence? Through the methodology of a qualitative case study and the data collection method of a focus group, I examined the selfperception of each participant’s own religious multicultural competence. After I transcribed and analyzed the data, I uncovered several themes, highlighted in the Results section. Once the analysis was complete, I utilized the data analysis method of intuitive inquiry. Findings included a) a definition …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Dance/Movement Therapy Appraoches To Eating Disorders, Apryl Marie Grasty

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This thesis is an annotated bibliography of dance/movement therapy approaches to eating disorders. The leading question of this research was: What information exists on dance/movement therapy approaches to eating disorders? Through data collection of articles, book chapters, online interviews, and the suggestions of therapists in the field, a total of twenty-six sources were annotated in this bibliography. The bibliography is organized by the author’s last name and each citation provides the author’s qualifications, analysis of content, and assessment of strengths and weaknesses. During the research process, the writer discovered that the selection of sources, such as master’s theses, were not …

Enhancing And Sustaining The Personal Wellness/Self-Efficacy Cycle Of A Dance/Movemet Therapy Intern, Lynn R. Chapman Dec 2013

Enhancing And Sustaining The Personal Wellness/Self-Efficacy Cycle Of A Dance/Movemet Therapy Intern, Lynn R. Chapman

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the personal wellness/self-efficacy cycle of a dance/movement therapy (DMT) intern, in order to deepen understanding of the interrelatedness of personal wellness and professional self-efficacy, as well as explore how to enhance and sustain them. Interns must develop the skill of self-care in order to promote health, wellness, and confidence in their work and prevent burnout and low self-efficacy. By focusing on process, this study highlighted the skill development of self-care. Therefore, two questions guided this heuristic study: What DMT techniques enhance and sustain my personal wellness/self-efficacy cycle? What is the process that …

The Lived Experience Of Vicarious Trauma For Providers: A Narrative Phenomenoleogical Study, Ambryn D. Melius Dec 2013

The Lived Experience Of Vicarious Trauma For Providers: A Narrative Phenomenoleogical Study, Ambryn D. Melius

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This research seeks to gain a greater understanding of the first-hand, lived experience of vicarious trauma for providers who have worked with individuals experiencing trauma. Through the application of phenomenological and participatory action methodologies, the experience of vicarious trauma is illuminated. Narrative exchanges between the co-researchers–the author and eleven providers–further explore the roles of the body and narrative process within this phenomenon. A conceptual evolution of vicarious trauma is presented, along with literature connecting the body and narrative within the trauma field. Data includes co-researcher’s recorded and transcribed interviews, vicarious trauma narratives, and written feedback. Embodied writing selections conducted by …

Counselor Identity Development: A Heuristic Look Into The Past, Present, And Future Role Identities, Jaquel Stokes Dec 2013

Counselor Identity Development: A Heuristic Look Into The Past, Present, And Future Role Identities, Jaquel Stokes

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this research was to explore and gain further insight into personal and professional roles. Through personal self-reflection, this researcher sought to better understand how her religious/spiritual and teacher roles influenced her professional identity as an emerging dance/movement therapist and counselor. This research study utilized and completed two full cycles of the heuristic methodology by engaging in two stages of data collection and data analyses, and therefore produced two creative syntheses through expressive movement. Nine co-researchers assisted during the investigation of personal and professional role identities. After analyzing and synthesizing the data as a whole, a movement piece …

A Journey Through The Embodiment Of Aggression, Anson Relick Dec 2013

A Journey Through The Embodiment Of Aggression, Anson Relick

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this research study was to understand what I could learn from my body as I experienced movements based on the observation of children’s aggression. There were several research questions that guided this study: how could the embodiment of aggression prepare me in my journey of becoming a dance/movement therapist? What would develop for me on a body level when I embodied movement qualities I associated with aggression? How could I gain a greater sense of empathy for my patients who act out aggressively? And are there recuperative or preventative measures I could help my patients take, based …

From Endogenization To Justification: Strategic Responses To Legitimacy Challenges In Contentious Organizational Fields, Paul-Brian Mcinerney Dec 2013

From Endogenization To Justification: Strategic Responses To Legitimacy Challenges In Contentious Organizational Fields, Paul-Brian Mcinerney

Organization Management Journal

Fields are contested social arenas. By examining the case of a single organization, in this case a social enterprise, the author shows how organizations respond to legitimacy challenges from members of the field and how such responses shape the organization’s form and practices. At times, organizations endogenize, that is, incorporate practices from the field. Findings indicate that responses reflect strategies under constraint. Endogenizing institutionalized practices constrains managers’ ability to exercise agency. Endogenizing contested practices afford agency by allowing managers to translate those practices to accord with local exigencies. This article extends literature on impression management and institutional theory by showing …

Integrating Corporate Sustainability And Organizational Strategy Within The Undergraduate Business Curriculum, Jamie R. Wieland, Dale E. Fitzgibbons Dec 2013

Integrating Corporate Sustainability And Organizational Strategy Within The Undergraduate Business Curriculum, Jamie R. Wieland, Dale E. Fitzgibbons

Organization Management Journal

Corporate sustainability (CS) requires organizations to shift focus from short-term financial goals to further consider the long-term social, environmental, and economic implications of their operations. Despite a lack of regulations in the United States requiring companies to disclose social and environmental measures, more than 80% of U.S. corporations voluntarily release corporate responsibility reports. The increased focus of CS in practice has impacted many business curricula to adapt CS-related courses (such as business ethics); however, we present results that indicate that such means may have limited influence on students’ views concerning the legitimacy of social and environmental issues in regard to …

Organizational Downsizing During An Economic Crisis: Survivors’ And Victims’ Perspectives, Roselie Mcdevitt, Catherine Giapponi, Deborah M. Houston Dec 2013

Organizational Downsizing During An Economic Crisis: Survivors’ And Victims’ Perspectives, Roselie Mcdevitt, Catherine Giapponi, Deborah M. Houston

Organization Management Journal

The recession that began in 2007 resulted in organizational retrenchment strategies focused on workforce reductions. In order to successfully emerge from this crisis and sustain long-term viability for their organizations, managers needed to reengage surviving employees and minimize the potential for retaliatory behavior by the victims of the downsizing activities. An understanding of the perceptions of both survivors and victims is critical when managers implement downsizing and recovery strategies. The psychological contract and attribution theory were used to examine employee perceptions post downsizing. The variables of interest in this study include employee perceptions related to organizational communication; understanding and agreement …

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

Community health centers are a key source of comprehensive primary care in medically underserved communities across the country, and their role is expected to grow as health coverage expands under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). To sharpen understanding of the health center patient population, this brief compares it to the overall low-income population, using data from the Health Center Patient Survey and the National Health Interview Survey, respectively. The pre-ACA profile of health center patients that emerges sets the stage for measuring change following implementation of the reform law and can inform health center policy, planning, and assessment moving forward.
