President's Weekly Perspective, 2/11/2013, Robert G. Frank
President Frank's Administration
The University of New Mexico is a remarkable campus that has often been called a city within the city, and integral to its operation is a committed and dedicated staff who cares deeply for the safety and protection of our students. The recent attacks on two female students on campus are deeply disturbing to me. As the president of this university and as one who also lives on campus with my family, I am committed to doing everything in my power to ensure that safety continues to be a top priority. I understand that the frequency of these incidents over …

Building Bridges And Solving Crimes? A Critical Examination Of How Police Use The New Aged Technology Of Social Media - Specifically Facebook, Seyed Raza Mirmajlessi
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The social media conglomerate Facebook has dramatically grown over the past few years. As a result, many law enforcement officials -- specifically police -- have taken notice. Recently, this has translated into police departments nationwide adopting Facebook in their daily efforts to improve police performance. Extensive reports from news media outlets have documented the assortment of uses Facebook provides police personnel. It has been reported that police are not only using the tool to prevent crime, but also as an innovative way to engage and interact with the community. In an era of community policing, it is vital to explore …

The Forgotten Victim In The Human Gene Patenting Debate: Pharmaceutical Companies, Jacob D. Moore
Florida Law Review
This Note will explore the seemingly contradictory interests of the general public, the pharmaceutical industry, and the research community regarding human gene patents. Part I will look at the recent Myriad decisions in light of previous beliefs about the patentability of genetic material. Part II will examine the effect of gene patenting on scientific research and innovation. Parts III and IV will explore the effect of gene patents on both the general public and the pharmaceutical industry, and will seek to understand the belief dissonance between these two factions. Part V will consider how Congress has handled similar problems in …
A Social Movement History Of Title Vii Disparate Impact Analysis, Susan D. Carle
A Social Movement History Of Title Vii Disparate Impact Analysis, Susan D. Carle
Florida Law Review
This Article examines the history of Title VII disparate impact law in light of the policy and potential constitutional questions the Court’s recent decision in Ricci v. DeStefano raises. My analysis shows that, contrary to popular assumptions, disparate impact doctrine was not a last-minute, ill-conceived invention of the EEOC following Title VII’s passage. Instead, it arose out of a moderate, experimentalist regulatory tradition that sought to use laws to motivate employers to reform employment practices that posed structural bars to employment opportunities for racial minorities, regardless of invidious intent. Non-lawyer activists within the National Urban League first pioneered these experimentalist …

The article presents information on the reforms in the juvenile justice system of the U.S. through alternative dispute resolution-based strategies which has been illustrated with the U.S. Supreme Court cases Roper v. Simmons, and Graham v. Florida. It discusses rationale of the U.S. Supreme Court in Graham case and analyzes Graham's current and future impact. Fixing The Vaccine Act's Structural Moral Hazard, Brandon L. Boxler
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
The article presents information on the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. It discusses the U.S. Federal circuit case Hazlehurst v. Sec'y of Health & Human Servs., in which lawsuit against the defendant was filed by the plaintiff who sought claims against the liability of product to recover damages for alleged injuries which his son had received from vaccines. It also provides information on the structural moral hazard of the program which devolves it into a litigious adjudicatory process.

Everywhere And Nowhere, Liana Christensen
Everywhere And Nowhere, Liana Christensen
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
In 1788 Europeans arrived here to stay. Since then, between eighteen and twenty mammal species have been lost, depending on who‘s counting. Gone, too, are the Paradise Parrot and the Dwarf Emu. Alarmingly high numbers of animal (and plant) species hover just this side of oblivion. Not infrequently in Australia‘s natural history the first sighting of an animal by a colonial collector is followed fairly swiftly by a long disappearance. Very few come back. For the most part, expanding populations of exotic predators and feral competitors, combined with shrinking islands of natural habitats mean that the average Australian has few …
