The Finance And Marketing Dilemma: Do Promotional Allowances Actually Increase Revenue And Profits For Atlantic City Casinos?, Toni Repetti
The Finance And Marketing Dilemma: Do Promotional Allowances Actually Increase Revenue And Profits For Atlantic City Casinos?, Toni Repetti
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Casinos offer free items to attract new guests or to reward their loyal customers. Casino management and marketing personnel believe these promotional allowances are necessary to maintain customers and to increase revenue. Three regression models are run to determine if promotional allowances increase gross revenue, net revenue, and gross operating profit for Atlantic City casinos. Results show that with a $1 increase in promotional allowances there is a significant increase of $4.53 in gross revenue, $3.53 in net revenue, and $1.29 in gross operating profit. These results will help management better understand the effect of offering complimentaries to their customers.
Keys, Wallet, And Pistol: The Seventh Circuit Establishes A Constitutional Right To Carry Firearms Outside Of The Home, K.L. Daniels
Keys, Wallet, And Pistol: The Seventh Circuit Establishes A Constitutional Right To Carry Firearms Outside Of The Home, K.L. Daniels
Seventh Circuit Review
In 2012, the Seventh Circuit decided Moore v. Madigan, declaring Illinois' ban on concealed carry unconstitutional. With this decision, the court extended the Supreme Court's previous Second Amendment jurisprudence. In 2008, the Supreme Court held in District of Columbia v. Heller that the constitutional right to bear arms includes a right to self-defense in the home; however, the Court did not state whether that right extended to a constitutional right to carry handguns in public.
In his Moore opinion, Judge Posner decided that because the Second Amendment is a right to self-defense, citizens must be allowed to exercise that …

Friend Request Pending: Does A Rare Victory Before The Seventh Circuit Mean Sex Offenders Will Finally Receive Fair Treatment From Courts?, Matt Dillinger
Seventh Circuit Review
Sex offender laws have spiraled out of control in recent years. Yet, despite the irrationality and punitive nature of many of these laws, courts have overwhelmingly sided with states in constitutional challenges. However, recent case law suggests that courts may no longer be willing to give states the benefit of the doubt where substantial individual rights are implicated. In Doe v. Prosecutor, Marion County, Indiana, the Seventh Circuit struck down an Indiana law that banned certain registered sex offenders from using social media websites, finding the law facially unconstitutional under the First Amendment. This comment argues that the court …

Kidnappings In Mexico City: A Social Problem, Jared Liamos
Perspectives
This paper examines criminal kidnappings in Mexico City, Mexico. While numerous types of crime are prevalent in Mexico’s capital, kidnapping remains a constant social problem affecting not only wealthy individuals and families, but also members across all types of social class. From the victims and their families, individuals living in fear, to criminal organizations, and local gangs, to the local, state, and federal government, everyone is impacted by this interconnecting social problem. This paper explains how kidnapping for ransom began in Mexico City, how methods of kidnappings have evolved overtime, the different types of kidnapping, and the preventative measures individual …

An Assessment Of The Economics Of Natural And Built Infrastructure For Water Resources In Maine, Charles S. Cogan Phd, Damon Yakovleff Mcpd, Samuel B. Merrill Phd
An Assessment Of The Economics Of Natural And Built Infrastructure For Water Resources In Maine, Charles S. Cogan Phd, Damon Yakovleff Mcpd, Samuel B. Merrill Phd
Water
Dispersed population growth has spread the need for new systems across the landscape, creating stresses on both the quantity and quality of Maine’s historically abundant groundwater and surface water supplies. Steps to address the inadequacies of these systems to manage stormwater flows are long overdue.
This report concludes that there are numerous opportunities for Maine to meet the demands for new, upgraded, and expanded water resources management and to do so at much lower costs than is often thought (or feared) possible. Four aspects of water resources are examined in the report: 1. Maintaining drinking water quality 2. Mitigating good …
An Implementation Evaluation Of An Actuarial Risk Assessment Instrument, James Robert Johnson
An Implementation Evaluation Of An Actuarial Risk Assessment Instrument, James Robert Johnson
Dissertations
As a result of years of legislation aimed at getting tough on crime, the United States now boasts some remarkable and unenviable statistics. Today, one in every 45 adults in the United States is under some form of community supervision (Pew Center, 2009). At a time when states are facing budget crises that have not been seen in decades, state leaders have an opportunity to both cut costs and improve public safety by focusing community supervision resources on higher-risk offenders through evidence-based practices (Austin, 2007; Latessa, 2003; MacKenzie, 2000; Pew Center, 2009).
Risk assessment is the critical first step …

Elements Of Cohesion: The Role Of Business Improvement Districts In Neighborhood Cohesion, Bo Scarim
Psychology Honors Projects
The current research examines the relationship between sense of community and business improvement districts (BIDs) in urban neighborhoods. Study 1 employed the method of imagined scenarios to distinguish sense of community ratings between hypothetical neighborhoods with and without BIDs. This study found that participants in the imagined BID neighborhood scenario reported higher sense of community than those in the imagined non-BID neighborhood scenario. In Study 2, residents of two neighborhoods in Brooklyn, New York, one with a BID and one without a BID, were surveyed on their neighborhood experience and sense of community. This study found no difference in sense …

Reducing California's Overcrowded Prison Population, Morgan Macdonald
Reducing California's Overcrowded Prison Population, Morgan Macdonald
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
This paper evaluates how “tough on crime” sentencing policies have influenced California's prison population. Several laws which make up the state's strict criminal justice practices were passed over the course of forty years without consideration for their impact on the state's budget and safety. Beginning with the Uniform Determinate Sentencing Act of 1976, the state has created an unsustainable prison system that will dissolve without increased public funding. However, California’s depleted economic condition has forced policymakers to reevaluate the state's criminal justice agenda, while complying with the three- judge court order to reduce its incarcerated population to 137.5 percent of …
Effects Of Cisplatin Analog Size On The Reaction With Dna Bases, Swathi Nandala
Effects Of Cisplatin Analog Size On The Reaction With Dna Bases, Swathi Nandala
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Cisplatin is one of the well-known anti-cancer agents used to treat testicular and ovarian cancers. It mainly binds to the DNA bases, which leads to cell death. The cytotoxic activity of the cisplatin analogs is due to the interaction of platinum with nucleotides like adenine at N7 or N1 position and guanine at N7 position. Guanine is the primary target for cisplatin analogs whereas adenine is the secondary target. Cisplatin analogs, [Pt(Me5dien)(D2O)]2+[Me5dien = N,N,N’,N’,N’’-pentamethyl diethylene triamine] and …
Against Proportional Punishment, Adam J. Kolber
Against Proportional Punishment, Adam J. Kolber
Vanderbilt Law Review
Many criminal defendants are held in detention while they await trial. Though conditions in pretrial detention are much like those in prison, detention is technically not punishment. Since detainees are merely accused of crimes, they are presumed innocent.' Their detention is not intended to punish them, and so, the Supreme Court has said, it is not punishment at all. Rather, detention is a means of promoting public safety, reducing witness intimidation, and preventing people accused of crimes from fleeing before trial. Nevertheless, defendants who are convicted generally receive credit at sentencing for time served in pretrial detention. An offender who …
Federal Criminal Discovery Reform: A Legislative Approach, Bruce A. Green
Federal Criminal Discovery Reform: A Legislative Approach, Bruce A. Green
Mercer Law Review
Suppose that federal prosecutors have conducted an investigation culminating in an indictment. Although the prosecutors believe that they have enough evidence to secure a conviction and are personally convinced that the defendant is guilty, some of the evidence they have collected is favorable to the defendant, because it tends to show that the defendant is innocent or that prosecution witnesses should not be believed. Must prosecutors disclose the favorable evidence to defense counsel to use in investigating, advising the defendant, plea negotiations, or trial? Under current federal law, the answer is generally "no." Unless favorable evidence falls within one of …

Corporate Power Unbound: Investor-State Arbitration Of Ip Monopolies On Medicines – Eli Lilly And The Tpp, Brook K. Baker
Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series
Free trade agreements (FTAs) and bilateral investment treaties (BITs) typically contain investment clauses designed to attract direct foreign investment and protect the interests of foreign investors. In addition to defining foreign investment that are entitled to protection, investment clauses typically allow for investor-state dispute resolution, which allows a foreign investor to launch arbitral proceeding directly against the offending government before a private panel of trade lawyers. This paper focuses first on a pro-investor draft investment chapter in an ongoing regional trade negotiation – the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) - and second on the first investor-state arbitral claim ever by a …

Support Of Police Consolidation : Assessing The Impact Of Perceived Complexity., John C. Reed 1956-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an examination of how police officers' perceptions of the complexity in merging Organizational Change Components (OCCs) related to the consolidation of the Louisville Division of Police (LDP) and Jefferson County Police Department (JCPD) in 2003 impact support for police consolidation. This study focused on five primary OCCs: 1) culture(s), 2) policies and procedures, 3) communications, 4) collective bargaining contracts, and 5) re-defining patrol division boundaries. The population consisted of officers who were currently employed by the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and were affiliated with either the former LDP or the JCPD in 2003 when these departments …

Stranded Strangers : Ethiopian Refugees And The Quest For Urban Citizenship In Nairobi, Kenya., Derese Getachew Kassa 1979-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is a burgeoning literature on Right to the City much of which is inspired by the pioneering works of Henry Lefebvre who wrote about urban citizenship for all inhabitants of the city, access to rights and resources in the city, and political participation in the management of urban affairs. This study explores whether the Right to the City approach can help explain the dynamics of state- refugee relations in the urban centers of Africa. Hence, I took the case of Ethiopian refugees in Nairobi (the capital city of Kenya) to answer the following research questions: a) How do Ethiopian …

Windfall Payment Decision-Making: A Case Study Of Pennsylvania Counties Receiving Funds From The Natural Gas Impact Fee (Act 13), Corey Scott Young
All Theses
Given the economic ‘boom’ and ‘bust’ cycle associated with natural resource extraction, the decision to spend or save the revenue generated by such activity (which is considered a financial windfall), has important policy implications. Two streams of literature exist which help to explain and predict the behaviors of those facing such payments. One of these streams contends that the size of a windfall payment is inversely related to consumption. More specifically, this stream posits that as the size of a windfall in proportion to an individual or household’s budget increases, consumption of the windfall decreases. This study attempted to test …

State Compliance On The Cdc Recommendations For Hepatitis C Testing, Amanda Norcott
State Compliance On The Cdc Recommendations For Hepatitis C Testing, Amanda Norcott
Public Health Undergraduate Program
Last August, the CDC updated its recommendations regarding what populations are at risk and should get tested for the hepatitis C virus, adding that those born from 1945 through 1965, or “baby boomers”, should receive a one-time Hepatitis C test due to the disproportionate number of cases in the age group. My goal was to identify which states are in compliance with these recommendations, and how many include the latest update. I collected data by searching specific terms about Hepatitis C within each state’s department of health website; I found that 34% of states were fully in line with the …
Quantifying Annual Bridge Cost By Overweight Trucks In South Carolina, Linbo Chen
Quantifying Annual Bridge Cost By Overweight Trucks In South Carolina, Linbo Chen
All Theses
With the economic development in recent decades, more trucks including overweight trucks are operating on the highways. As a result, many bridges are expected to carry more loads than they did in previous years. The impact of overweight trucks on existing bridges has been an urgent concern for the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). There is a pressing need to quantify the annual bridge cost in South Carolina caused by trucks and, in particular, overweight trucks so that the SCDOT and the state legislators can determine the appropriate fee structure for operating overweight trucks. This research focused on quantifying …

Neighborhoood Snapshot Inventories: A Study Of The Cooper River Bridge Tax Incremnent Financing District, Rebecca Anne Quandt
All Theses
Tax Increment Financing (TIF) is one of the most widely used economic development tools in the nation. In 2008, Charleston, South Carolina, designated the Cooper River Bridge neighborhood (CRBN) as its fourth TIF district. The planning process is now underway, and many large redevelopment projects have already started construction. Private investors will receive funding to develop vacant lots and revitalize dilapidated properties, and the City will benefit economically from new property taxes added to the revenue roll. City officials have anticipated the economic change this TIF district will provide, but have they properly anticipated the changes that will occur to …

Conservative Revolutionary Intellectuals In The Weimar Republic And National Socialist Germany: Carl Schmitt, Martin Heidegger, And Ernst Jϋnger, Vincent S. Betts
History Theses
This thesis will examine the writings and career/life paths of three conservative revolutionary intellectuals during the Weimar Republic and National Socialist Germany. The purpose of this examination is not only to provide an overview of the development of conservative revolutionary thought in Germany after World War I, but also to investigate the influence these intellectuals had on the National Socialists' seizure and consolidation of power. The works and lives of three important intellectuals will be examined: Carl Schmitt, Martin Heidegger, and Ernst Jünger. In combination with scholarly secondary literature, this thesis will be based mostly on translated primary writings.
