Acute Physiological Stress Promotes Clustering Of Synaptic Markers And Alters Spine Morphology In The Hippocampus, Veronica Sebastian, Jim Brian Estil, Daniel Chen, Lisa M. Schrott, Peter A. Serrano
Publications and Research
GluA2-containing AMPA receptors and their association with protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ) and post-synaptic density-95 (PSD-95) are important for learning, memory and synaptic plasticity processes. Here we investigated these synaptic markers in the context of an acute 1h platform stress, which can disrupt spatial memory retrieval for a short-term memory on the object placement task and long-term memory retrieval on a well-learned radial arm maze task. Acute stress increased serum corticosterone and elevated the expression of synaptic PKMζ while decreasing synaptic GluA2. Using co-immunoprecipitation, we found that this stressor promotes the clustering of GluA2, PKMζ and PSD-95, which is consistent …

The Nature Of Architecture, Andrew Cossaboon
The Nature Of Architecture, Andrew Cossaboon
Theses and Dissertations
I enjoy driving in the city. It makes me feel minuscule against the skyscrapers and monuments. I wonder about who has lived in the city and admire the craftsmanship, the creative design, and the intelligence it takes to engineer and build these structures. The clean lines, geometric shapes, and surface textures of the buildings inspire my works. My obsession with construction and architecture has driven my creativity. In ceramics, I reflect on architecture when forming vases and jars. I hand-build and wheel-throw my pieces, and add surface texture and lines reminiscent of stone and brickwork. Only white and black glazes …

Analysis Involving Categorical Attributes Having Many Response Categories, Fred B. Bryant, Paul R. Yarnold
Analysis Involving Categorical Attributes Having Many Response Categories, Fred B. Bryant, Paul R. Yarnold
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Attributes measured on a categorical response scale are common in the literature. Categorical scales for attributes such as, for example, political affiliation, ethnic origin, marital status, state of residence, or diagnosis may consist of many qualitative response categories. Such disorganized variables rarely appear in multivariable models: some effects are missed in analysis due to inadequate statistical power for the many categories, and some findings are dismissed due to inability of the investigator to recognize the dimension(s) underlying segmented categories. This research note recommends that such multi-categorical attributes are replaced by a new set of attributes created via content analysis. In …

The Steps To Growing Up Healthy Study: Barriers To Initial Behavior Change In A Primary Care Based Obesity Prevention/Reversal Program For Young Children, Dominica B. Hernandez
The Steps To Growing Up Healthy Study: Barriers To Initial Behavior Change In A Primary Care Based Obesity Prevention/Reversal Program For Young Children, Dominica B. Hernandez
Master's Theses
BACKGROUND: Children of color are disproportionately affected by obesity creating a need for effective prevention/reversal programs. This study investigated a first dose response to a pediatric primary care-based obesity prevention program (Steps to Growing Up Healthy) targeting Hispanic and Black children. We examined whether mothers experienced barriers to behavior change and if maternal, child, environmental, or intervention variables predicted barrier status.
METHODS: Hispanic and Black mothers and their children (N=234; 51%F; 88.9% Hispanic; 35.4±8.7months) were recruited from an urban pediatric primary care clinic. The intervention utilized brief motivational counseling delivered by clinicians and nurses with the goal of …
The Creative Citizen: Understanding The Value Of Design Education Programs In The Knowledge Economy, Natalie Wright, Rebekah Davis, Sam Bucolo
The Creative Citizen: Understanding The Value Of Design Education Programs In The Knowledge Economy, Natalie Wright, Rebekah Davis, Sam Bucolo
Learn X Design Conference Series
The knowledge economy relies on the diffusion and use of knowledge as well as its creation (Houghton and Sheenan, 2000). The future success of economic activity will depend on the capacity of organisations to transform by increasing their flexibility. In particular, this transformation is dependant on a decentralised, networked and multi-skilled workforce. To help organisations transition, new strategies and structures for education are required. Education systems need to concentrate less on specialist skills and more on the development of people with broad-based problem solving skills that are adaptable, with social and inter-personal communication skills necessary for networking and communication. This …

Exploring The Role Of Social Reasoning And Self-Efficacy In The Mathematics Problem-Solving Performance Of Lower- And Higher-Income Children, Allison G. Butler
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Research documents an income-based achievement gap in mathematics, yet children from lower-income backgrounds do not lag behind their more advantaged peers in high-level social reasoning tasks. The purpose here was to investigate whether modifying mathematics word problems to make them more socially based would impact the mathematics performance and/or mathematics self-efficacy of lower- versus higher-income children. Research questions regarding (1) the relative difficulty of symbolic equations versus word problems, (2) the impact of socially modifying word problems on children’s accuracy and self-efficacy, and (3) the relation between children’s mathematics performance and mathematics self-efficacy were explored. Participants were 164 5th graders. …

At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged with their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of their disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual …

From Prison To Home, Rebecca Snyder, Randal Day
From Prison To Home, Rebecca Snyder, Randal Day
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Despite the recent slowing of population rates within the United States prison system, the prison population is at a record high. The vast majority of these 1.4 million incarcerated individuals will be released back into the community, and a significant number of these ex-inmates will relapse back into a habit of crime, eventually be reconvicted, and ultimately re-sentenced. The prospect of thousands of ex-prisoners returning to their homes and communities, and their probable recidivism, is a concern to many. But other than atheoretical studies on recidivism itself, prisoner re-entry as a whole has been neglected by the research community. The …

Through The Looking Glass: A Study Of Eeg Data Using Aperiodic Components Analysis, Daniel C. Whitney, Dawson Hedges
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the past, it has been difficult to distinguish between different tasks of cognition using conventional statistical and graphical methods of EEG analysis. Aperiodic components analysis (ACA) offers a new, innovative approach to time series data analysis – a rubric under which EEG data analysis falls – and should allow the differentiation between simple tasks of cognition.
Intra-Cranial Overstimulation Of The Brain Reward System, Lael J. Stander, Dr. Scott C. Steffensen
Intra-Cranial Overstimulation Of The Brain Reward System, Lael J. Stander, Dr. Scott C. Steffensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Intra-cranial self stimulation (ICSS) has been well documented in both animal models and humans. Stimulation of various centers in the brain creates a very powerful reinforcement. Subjects will prefer ICSS to food, mating behavior, and drugs of abuse. One such pleasure center is the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) which functions as an information highway between several other pleasure mediating structures in the limbic system. Interestingly, constant stimulation of the MFB produces a highly dysphoric response. Animals respond with aversive behavior similar to pain avoidance. What is the electrophysiological change that mediates this reversal of pleasure to pain? In order to …

Altruistic Vs. Reciprocal Family Relationships: A Levinasian Alternative, Bradford J. Wiggins, Dr. Edwin E. Gantt
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Some of the greatest challenges we face today are in our own families. Husbands and wives struggle to find meaning in their relationships. Parents often end up battling with their children as they seek to bring their families together in unified goals and purposes. Many are not successful in their pursuit of meaningful family relationships. Divorce and abuse are all to common in today’s society. Even more pervasive are the strained relationships between family members. How is it that these relationships can fall so short of their seemingly immense potential? It appears reasonable that family members should be able to …

Western perspectives on Chinese literature and poetics have generally been overly mystified (or even nonexistent). This fledgling view of the knowledge and literary achievements of China is to be anticipated during the beginnings of a cultural exchange between the East and the West.
Learning Strategies Of Successful Undergraduate Math Students, David M. Sloan, Dr. Harold Miller
Learning Strategies Of Successful Undergraduate Math Students, David M. Sloan, Dr. Harold Miller
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The goal of my project was to identify the strategies of successful undergraduate math students and to then make that information available to those who wish to improve their own study habits. The project consisted of 4 phases. First, I interviewed instructors about what they saw successful students do. Second, I conducted surveys in several math-based classes to find out what students, successful and struggling alike, were actually doing. Third, I took what I learned from those surveys and tried to apply them in a classroom setting to see if the information could elicit a positive effect. Fourth, I took …
