Arguments Concerning Photon Concepts, John Byron Manchak, Dr. David Grandy Oct 2013

Arguments Concerning Photon Concepts, John Byron Manchak, Dr. David Grandy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

G. N. Lewis coined the word ‘photon’ in 1926 to describe what he thought was a particle that transmitted radiation from one atom to another.1 The word ‘photon’ caught on and eventually became the name for the smallest measurable bit of light. Developments in physics since that time, however, have suggested that it is “no longer straightforward to explain what is meant by a photon.”2 Select physicists now disregard the traditional view that photons are “bullets”3 of light. Others have argued against another conception of light that is based on the ideas of waves not unlike those found on a …

Recruitment And Retention Of Rural Nursing Students: A Retrospective Study, J. Bigbee, D. Mixon

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction: The shortage of registered nurses is an issue globally, but particularly in rural and remote areas. Previous research in medicine suggests that recruiting students from rural backgrounds is an effective strategy to enhance the supply of rural healthcare providers. This strategy has not been widely adopted or evaluated in nursing. The purpose of this study was to compare rural and urban nursing students in relation to application, admission, and retention/graduation trends at a metropolitan state university in the Pacific Northwest area of the USA.
Methods: A retrospective longitudinal descriptive design was used, analyzing existing data from 2005 to …

Images Of Womanhood In J.R.R. Tolkien’S The Lord Of The Rings, Joy Mcmurray, Dr. Steve Walker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings continues to rise in stature in the literary world, but it also sustains a significant cultural impact: it was one of the most widely read and influential novels of our time even before the blockbuster films were released. Authors and critics also acknowledge Tolkien’s work as a major influence on the recently expanded fantasy genre, and it is difficult to find a fantasy novel that does not contain significant elements and assumptions initiated by Tolkien. Thus, between these books and his own books, Tolkien has had and will have a great …

Cardiovascular Disease Hospitalizations In Relation To Exposure To The September 11, 2001 World Trade Center Disaster And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Hannah T. Jordan, Steven D. Stellman, Alfredo Morabia, Sara A. Miller‐Archie, Howard Alper, Zoey Laskaris, Robert M. Brackbill, James E. Cone

Publications and Research

Background A cohort study found that 9/11‐related environmental exposures and posttraumatic stress disorder increased self‐reported cardiovascular disease risk. We attempted to replicate these findings using objectively defined cardiovascular disease hospitalizations in the same cohort. Methods and Results Data for adult World Trade Center Health Registry enrollees residing in New York State on enrollment and no cardiovascular disease history (n=46 346) were linked to a New York State hospital discharge–reporting system. Follow‐up began at Registry enrollment (2003–2004) and ended at the first cerebrovascular or heart disease (HD) hospitalization, death, or December 31, 2010, whichever was earliest. We used proportional hazards models …

Enhancing Self-Efficacy In The Utilization Of Physical Activity Counseling: An Online Constructivist Approach With Psychologists-In-Training, Cassandra D. Pasquariello

Theses and Dissertations

In our sedentary society, physical inactivity has become the biggest public health concern of the 21st century. In addition to physical health promotion, physical activity has been associated with a number of positive psychological and social outcomes. Psychologists are well positioned to provide physical activity counseling and may have ethical obligations to address physical activity with their clients. Training the next generation of psychologists about the role of physical activity and health is critical to ensure best practices in graduate education. Researchers have cited insufficient training as a barrier to integrating physical activity into clinical work, yet little is known …

A Taxonomy Of Determinism, Brant Williams, Dr. Brent D. Slife Oct 2013

A Taxonomy Of Determinism, Brant Williams, Dr. Brent D. Slife

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In psychology, there has been a great deal of debate about the issue of determinism. Many psychologists argue that we are determined by our genetics and our environment. However, there are many psychologists who strongly disagree with this idea. This debate has continued for many years without resolution and in the process has generated much confusion. This confusion is in large part due to a lack of a standard definition of determinism. Currently, there is no accepted standard definition of determinism and each researcher defines determinism differently. The result of this is that often researchers are arguing about two different …

Discourse On Thinking And The Concept Of Releasement, Jason Scoffield, Dr. David Paulsen Oct 2013

Discourse On Thinking And The Concept Of Releasement, Jason Scoffield, Dr. David Paulsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this project was threefold. First, the thesis resulting from this project was to provide a basic commentary on Discourse on Thinking. This was be done by using the much simpler “Memorial Address” and how it relates to the ideas developed in Heidegger’s other works to establish the background and approach necessary to understanding the more explanatory “Conversation on a Country Path About Thinking.” Second, the paper was to then describe the concept of releasement, illustrating the primary role it must play if man is to dwell meaningfully in a world dominated by technology and modern science. Finally, …

The Varieties Of Individual Engagement (Vie) Scales: Confirmatory Factor Analyses Across Two Samples And Contexts, Jayme L. Renfro, Lisa M. Pytlikzillig, Myiah J. Hutchens, Peter Muhlberger, Shiyuan Wang, Rabecca Harris

Faculty Publications

The field of public engagement, participation and deliberation is fraught with conflicting results that are difficult to interpret due to the very different methods and measures used. Theory advancement and consistent operationalization and assessment of key public deliberation and engagement variables will benefit considerably from standardized measures of constructs and the ability to compare across studies. In this article, drawing from social and educational psychology, we describe the theoretical bases for scales assessing eight varieties of participant engagement that may be experienced during participation activities: Active learning, conscientious, uninterested, creative, open-minded, closed-minded, angry, and social engagement. We describe our development …

Capital Cost Comparisons Between Low Impact Development (Lid) And Conventional Stormwater Management Systems In Florida, Daniel C. Penniman, Mark Hostetler, Tatiana Borisova, Glenn Acomb Oct 2013

Capital Cost Comparisons Between Low Impact Development (Lid) And Conventional Stormwater Management Systems In Florida, Daniel C. Penniman, Mark Hostetler, Tatiana Borisova, Glenn Acomb

Suburban Sustainability

Low impact development (LID), an ecologically sensitive development strategy and stormwater management (SWM) method, is beginning to be implemented in more suburban and metropolitan projects. However, construction firms that work in Florida have been relatively slow to adopt LID. One significant reason being that many professionals in the development community believe LID practices raise the cost of construction compared to conventional, “pipe and pond” methods. Our objective for this study was to determine how specific capital costs differed between LID and conventional SWM methods. We surveyed a group of LID-experienced design professionals to collect cost data from projects that were …

Emotional Intelligence, Diversity, And Group Performance: The Effect Of Team Composition On Executive Education Program Outcomes, Michael P. Lillis Oct 2013

Emotional Intelligence, Diversity, And Group Performance: The Effect Of Team Composition On Executive Education Program Outcomes, Michael P. Lillis

Journal of Executive Education

Group dynamics play a crucial role in group performance and effectiveness. The notion that people prefer to work with similar others in homogeneous groups is a common observation. Yet studies have revealed that homogeneity doesn’t necessarily translate into optimal group performance. In fact, research on group diversity has been fairly inconsistent; suggest the potential for some kind of underlying moderator variable. Using a sample of executive MBA students, this paper examines how group diversity and emotional intelligence are associated with group performance. We develop an integrative model that posits that the association between group heterogeneity and group performance becomes more …

A Report Card On Innovation: How Companies And Business Schools Are Dealing With It, Harry Vardis, Gary L. Selden Oct 2013

A Report Card On Innovation: How Companies And Business Schools Are Dealing With It, Harry Vardis, Gary L. Selden

Journal of Executive Education

This study focused on the state of innovation in today’s businesses. We found that Innovation-driven companies observe certain practices. These were CEO involvement, supportive cultures of innovation, rewards for innovation, communication, metrics, hiring practices that support innovation, budget allocations for innovation, and an innovative vision. In addition, it supported the notion that innovation-driven companies practiced systemic innovation as opposed to innovation-shy companies. Open communication appears to contribute to systemic innovation by reducing fear of risk taking.

It is critical to point out that, fear, the major obstacle in the pursuit of innovation, can be eliminated with the right communication among …

Immigrant Women And Their Health: An Olive Paper, Afaf Ibrahim Meleis, Juliene G. Lipson, Marjorie A. Muecke, Gloria R. Smith Oct 2013

Immigrant Women And Their Health: An Olive Paper, Afaf Ibrahim Meleis, Juliene G. Lipson, Marjorie A. Muecke, Gloria R. Smith

Sigma Publications: Book Excerpts

Migration and population relocation are part of human history. However, recent national and international issues create a need to pay more attention to immigration and its effects on immigrants and the societies in which immigrants resettle. Women constitute about 80% of the world's total of immigrants and refugees. Women immigrants are less visible than are men immigrants. They often receive less health care and care of inferior quality; and they have received less scholarly attention. As a result their health may be compromised.

The overall goal of this paper, which we are calling an olive paper:

  1. is to raise nurses' …
