Training Faculty To Adopt The Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, Ipp And Its Influence On Teaching And Learning: Process And Outcomes, Maureen Mcavoy
College of Professional Studies Faculty Research and Publications
This is the second of two articles describing the action research undertaken by the three trainees and their trainer (author of this article). After formal training, the training team integrated the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) into their undergraduate courses from fall of 2010 through May 2013 in the College of Professional Studies (CPS) at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The first article was published in this journal in fall 2012 and provided a narrative describing the faculty development process, predicated on the five constructs of the IPP: Context, Experience, Reflection, Action and Evaluation. This article includes a full description of …

Millennial Students' Preferred Learning Style : Evaluation Of Collaborative Learning Versus Traditional Lecture Methods, Michelle Roa
Millennial Students' Preferred Learning Style : Evaluation Of Collaborative Learning Versus Traditional Lecture Methods, Michelle Roa
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Nurse educators are challenged with a new generation of students referred to as the Millennial generation. These millennial students, who have different learning style preferences, are testing the traditional pedagogical methods of nurse educators such as lecture. The social nature of millennial students coincides with the social constructivism theory that students learn in groups. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine if there was an improved retention of knowledge in millennial students who were taught by collaborative learning strategies rather than the traditional lecture method in an associate degree nursing program. Additionally, the study examined if learning by …
The Fight To Frame Privacy, Woodrow Hartzog
The Fight To Frame Privacy, Woodrow Hartzog
Faculty Scholarship
The resolution of a debate often hinges on how the problem being debated is presented. In psychology and related disciplines, this method of issue presentation is known as framing. Framing theory holds that even small changes in the presentation of an issue or event can produce significant changes of opinion. Framing has become increasingly important in discussions about privacy and security. In his new book, "Nothing to Hide: The False Tradeoff Between Privacy and Security," Daniel Solove argues that if we continue to view privacy and security as diametrically opposed to each other, privacy will always lose. Solove argues that …
Academic Librarianship And Career Adaptability, Tara Baillargeon, Aaron H. Carlstrom
Academic Librarianship And Career Adaptability, Tara Baillargeon, Aaron H. Carlstrom
Library Faculty Research and Publications
The inspiration for this essay is Barbara Fister’s assertion that librarians must embrace functions that have not traditionally been part of the academic librarian’s portfolio. We shall examine the need for career adaptability in librarianship and use a case study to illustrate the four attributes librarians need to develop to ensure career adaptability. The case study involved collaboration between Kansas State University (KSU) Libraries, an agronomy professor, and the Global Research Alliance to develop an open access croplands research database. We will draw upon the field of vocational psychology to discuss career adaptability and ways librarians can develop the traits …

Journal of Hate Studies
This volume and Volume 12 focus primarily on presenting peerreviewed scholarly articles developed from the selected proceedings f the Third International Conference on Hate Studies. Themed “The Pursuit of Justice: Understanding Hatred, Confronting Intolerance, Eliminating Inequality,” the conference was co-organized and hosted by the Gonzaga Institute for Hate Studies, the Gonzaga School of Law, and the Washington State Task Force on Race and the Criminal Justice System. Presenters and attendees from two dozen countries worldwide came to Spokane, Washington for four days in April 2013 in order to concentrate on how fear and ignorance of the “other” manifest in hatred, …
Is Peacemaking Unpatriotic?: The Function Of Homophobia In The Discursive World, Mari J. Matsuda
Is Peacemaking Unpatriotic?: The Function Of Homophobia In The Discursive World, Mari J. Matsuda
Journal of Hate Studies
Self-doubt is not the custom in public debate. In adversarial speech performance, the voice of certainty carries weight. Probing, intersubjective, self-reflective conversation is odd. Yet if speech is a cornerstone of democracy, if developing better ways to live on this planet without destroying it is a prerequisite to our survival, we need to bring all the necessary ideas to the table. The First Amendment can save your life; the wrong idea can kill you. This is why I am concerned about the mechanisms by which speech is suppressed in daily life, and am searching to understand the ways in which …

Book Review: Joseph G. Bock’S The Technology Of Nonviolence: Social Media And Violence Prevention, Tyler Branson
Journal of Hate Studies
In the wake of the 2009-2012 Arab Spring protests—the first large- scale wave of Arab demonstrations in the Internet age—many pondered the significance of the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the movement. While the actual impact of technology in the Arab Spring is contested (Morozov, 2012), we can nevertheless tentatively note that the examples of technology being used throughout the Arab Spring are at the very least compelling for the field of peacebuilding, including vio- lence prevention. In this unique cultural and technological contemporary moment, scholars who study violence should be asking themselves: in socially and politically …
From Space-Off To Represented Space: A Review Of Reimagining Equality: Stories Of Gender, Race, And Finding Home By Anita Hill., Lolita Buckner Inniss
From Space-Off To Represented Space: A Review Of Reimagining Equality: Stories Of Gender, Race, And Finding Home By Anita Hill., Lolita Buckner Inniss
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
In Reimagining Equality: Stories of Gender, Race, and Finding Home, author Anita Hill explores some of the literal and figurative meanings of "home," focusing specifically on African-American women in their quest for home. Hill layers discussions of law, literature, and culture with stories of individual women, both historic and contemporary. In Reimagining Equality, Hill takes on a topic clearly distinct from the Clarence Thomas Senate confirmation hearings, the episode for which she is best known. Her work here is, nonetheless, evocative of her struggle in those hearings, because the book addresses the interrelation between gender, race, place, space, and power. …
Death And Rehabilitation, Meghan J. Ryan
Death And Rehabilitation, Meghan J. Ryan
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
While rehabilitation is reemerging as an important penological goal, the Supreme Court is eroding the long-revered divide between capital and non-capital sentences. This raises the question of whether and how rehabilitation applies in the capital context. Courts and scholars have long concluded that it does not — that death is completely irrelevant to rehabilitation. Yet, historically, the death penalty in this country has been imposed in large part to induce the rehabilitation of offenders’ characters. Additionally, there are tales of the worst offenders transforming their characters when they are facing death, and several legal doctrines are based on the idea …
The Mobile Health Revolution?, Nathan Cortez
The Mobile Health Revolution?, Nathan Cortez
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
Rarely does a class of technologies excite physicians, patients, financeers, gadgeteers, and policymakers alike. But mobile health — the use of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets for health or medical purposes — has captured our collective imagination. Observers predict that mobile health, also referred to as “mHealth” or “medical apps,” can save millions of lives, billions in spending, and democratize access to health care. Proponents argue that mobile health technologies will transform the ways in which we deliver, consume, measure, and pay for care; disrupting our sclerotic health care system.
This Article evaluates mobile health and its many ambitions. …

A Community Of Procedure Scholars: Teaching Procedure And The Legal Academy, Elizabeth G. Thornburg, Erik S. Knutsen, Carla Crifo, Camille Cameron
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
This article asks whether the way in which procedure is taught has an impact on the extent and accomplishments of a scholarly community of proceduralists. Not surprisingly, we find a strong correlation between the placement of procedure as a required course in an academic context and the resulting body of scholars and scholarship. Those countries in which more civil procedure is taught as part of a university degree — and in which procedure is recognized as a legitimate academic subject — have larger scholarly communities, a larger and broader corpus of works analyzing procedural issues, and a richer web of …
Grandma In The White House: Legal Support For Intergenerational Caregiving, Jessica Dixon Weaver
Grandma In The White House: Legal Support For Intergenerational Caregiving, Jessica Dixon Weaver
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
Marian Robinson’s status as the live-in First Grandmother is an example of a growing trend in the United States - the multigenerational family. The 2010 United States Census Data reflects that the number of households with multiple generations living under one roof has increased by 25% this decade. Mrs. Robinson also reflects another new development in American families: grandparents helping their adult children with caregiving. More than 70% of grandparents are taking care of their grandkids on a regular basis, and 13% are primary caretakers. Many grandparents treat their role as caregiver like a profession, and they sacrifice jobs, residences, …
"Simple" Takes On The Supreme Court, Robert L. Tsai
"Simple" Takes On The Supreme Court, Robert L. Tsai
Faculty Scholarship
This essay assesses black literature as a medium for working out popular understandings of America’s Constitution and laws. Starting in the 1940s, Langston Hughes’s fictional character, Jesse B. Semple, began appearing in the prominent black newspaper, the Chicago Defender. The figure affectionately known as “Simple” was undereducated, unsophisticated, and plain spoken - certainly to a fault according to prevailing standards of civility, race relations, and professional attainment. Butthese very traits, along with a gritty experience under Jim Crow, made him not only a sympathetic figure but also an armchair legal theorist. In a series of barroom conversations, Simple ably critiqued …
Child Sexual Abuse In The Media: Is Institutional Failure To Blame?, Jane Long Weatherred
Child Sexual Abuse In The Media: Is Institutional Failure To Blame?, Jane Long Weatherred
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a longitudinal content analysis study of child sexual abuse (CSA) in the United States national news media from 2002 through 2012. It finds that the U.S. national news media have shifted their focus from individual level causes to societal level causes for CSA. This shift has implications for changes in institutional policies and child protection laws throughout the country.

That's News To Me: An Exploratory Study Of The Uses And Gratifications Of Current Events On Social Media Of 18-24 Year-Olds, John Vincent Karlis
Theses and Dissertations
Social media is a dominant news source among the college-age demographic (18-24). Inherent in news consumption on social media is current events, that is, news that has individual relevance, societal relevance and is time constrained. This study adds to the existing body of uses and gratification literature. This one-shot exploratory study is the first of its kind, examining the "what" or different dimensions of news and the "why" or uses and gratifications that 18-24 year-olds use current events on social media. It also looked at the factors predicting recall of current events on social media.

The Corporation In The Marketplace Of Ideas: The Law And Economics Of Corporate Political Speech, Matthew W. Telleen
The Corporation In The Marketplace Of Ideas: The Law And Economics Of Corporate Political Speech, Matthew W. Telleen
Theses and Dissertations
In 2010, the Supreme Court decided Citizens United v. FEC, and raised the ire of commentators around the country. The President even criticized the ruling during the State of the Union Address. But corporate political speech has existed at various levels throughout history, and the debate is often clouded by complex balancing tests and convoluted reasoning. In this dissertation, the methodology of law and economics is utilized to analyze the value of corporate political speech to the marketplace of ideas. Chapter 1 introduces Tracing the history of Supreme Court decisions dealing with corporate political speech, variables can be isolated that …
Political Advertising In Kuwait - A Functional Discourse Analysis, Jasem Alqaseer
Political Advertising In Kuwait - A Functional Discourse Analysis, Jasem Alqaseer
Theses and Dissertations
Most political advertising studies focus on the U.S. or other western democracies like the U.K. and other European countries. In general, political advertising studies focused on the content of political advertising especially on the subject of issues vs. images in advertising. In addition, many studies of political advertising content focus on the topic of negative advertising. The practice of political advertising has been found to vary depending on the political and media structure within a country as well as cultural and legal elements. Therefore, the gap in the literature about the practice of political advertising in the Middle-East is worth …

Mental Health On Youtube: Exploring The Potential Of Interactive Media To Change Knowledge, Attitudes And Behaviors About Mental Health, Caroline Belser Foster
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation first examines the mental health content on the video-sharing site YouTube as a foundation for exploring the ways the mental health community (members and associates of the National Alliance on Mental Illness) have used, and may use, YouTube in the future for information seeking, social support seeking, information providing, and social support providing. Using a content analysis of a systematic sample of YouTube videos produced by the YouTube search engine for the terms 'mental health' and 'mental illness,' this study highlights types, topics and formats of mental health related content, including types of mental illnesses, as well as …
An Alternative Path: The Intellectual Legacy Of James W. Carey, Matthew Ross
An Alternative Path: The Intellectual Legacy Of James W. Carey, Matthew Ross
Theses and Dissertations
The following is an inquiry into the intellectual Legacy of James W. Carey. This study locates, classifies and critiques the three most salient currents of his work: (1) His critique of the intellectual history of mass communications and the positivism of the media 'effects tradition,' (2) his North American cultural studies alternative to the dominant ways of knowing in his discipline, (3) and his technological criticism. All three of these currents are discussed and evaluated in terms of Carey's contribution to the discipline. While Carey was neglectful is his analysis of institutions and issues of political economy, the author argues …
Immersed Finite Element Method For Interface Problems With Algebraic Multigrid Solver, Wenqiang Feng
Immersed Finite Element Method For Interface Problems With Algebraic Multigrid Solver, Wenqiang Feng
Masters Theses
"This thesis is to discuss the bilinear and 2D linear immersed finite element (IFE) solutions generated from the algebraic multigrid solver for both stationary and moving interface problems. In contrast to the body-fitting mesh restriction of the traditional finite element methods or finite difference methods for interface problems, a number of numerical methods based on structured meshes independent of the interface have been developed. When these methods are applied to the real world applications, we often need to solve the corresponding large scale linear systems many times, which demands efficient solvers. The algebraic multigrid (AMG) method is a natural choice …

Shopping Alone Online Vs. Co-Browsing: A Physiological And Perceptual Comparison, Ceren Topaloglu
Masters Theses
"Although shopping is a social activity frequently performed with friends and family members, most online shopping is done alone. With the development of Web 2.0 technologies and the increasing popularity of social networking sites, online social shopping has emerged as a new phenomenon that allows more social interaction, participation, and satisfaction for customers while shopping online. Therefore, companies have started to use social shopping tools in their e-commerce websites to facilitate online social shopping. Co-browsing is one of the more recent online social shopping tools available, enabling users to shop or browse together by offering synchronized web views and chat …
Women Authors Of Technical Writing Textbooks From 1923 To 1973, Melissa Nicole Wampler
Women Authors Of Technical Writing Textbooks From 1923 To 1973, Melissa Nicole Wampler
Masters Theses
"The published histories of technical writing textbooks do not usually include many women-authored textbooks. To find out why women-authored textbooks have been marginalized in these pedagogical histories, I selected seven women-authored textbooks and four men-authored textbooks published from 1923 to 1973, investigated the backgrounds of the authors and key features of their textbooks, and used the collected data to compare the women-authored textbooks to the men-authored textbooks. I was not able to find any reason why the women-authored textbooks have been or should be marginalized in histories of technical writing textbooks; however, my study had several limitations. My thesis begins …
Breaking The Mold And Picking Up The Pieces: Rights Of Parenthood And Parentage In Nontraditional Families, J. Herbie Difonzo, Ruth C. Stern
Breaking The Mold And Picking Up The Pieces: Rights Of Parenthood And Parentage In Nontraditional Families, J. Herbie Difonzo, Ruth C. Stern
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The past few decades have shown us myriad ways to form a family. Married couples and their biological offspring no longer define the dominant model, nor do they constitute the majority of domestic arrangements. But while contemporary culture tends to applaud social diversity, we cannot be certain that novel, highly individualized family formation is always consonant with child well-being. Further, courts and legislatures have been slow to acknowledge and accommodate domestic diversity. When judges and lawmakers do confer parental rights on a particular class of individuals, the results are not always equitable or even logical. The era of the traditional …
