Token theory (Kanter, 1977) suggests that being a token individual in an organization can cause that individual to experience discrimination, increased pressure to perform, isolation from the majority group, negative stereotyping, and can interfere with performance. The purpose of this research was to determine if varying percentages of females in a work role do indeed influence the likelihood that these negative outcomes will occur by using performance data from an applied sample. By using both supervisor ratings and objective sales figures from a sales organization, this research filled a gap in the current research, in which token theory is often …

The Effect Of Input Modality On Pronunciation Accuracy Of English Language Learners, Marcella A. Farina Phd Jan 2013

The Effect Of Input Modality On Pronunciation Accuracy Of English Language Learners, Marcella A. Farina Phd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The issues relative to foreign accent continue to puzzle second language researchers, educators, and learners today. Although once thought to be at the root, maturational constraints have fallen short of definitively accounting for the myriad levels and rates of phonological attainment (Bialystok & Miller, 1999, p. 128). This study, a Posttest-only Control Group Design, examined how the pronunciation accuracy of adult, English language learners, as demonstrated by utterance length, was related to two input stimuli: auditory-only input and auditoryorthographic input. Utterance length and input modality were further examined with the added variables of native language, specifically Arabic and Spanish, and …

Electrochemical properties of [Mo3O2(O2CCH3)6(H2O)(CF3SO2H)2 and [Cr2Mo(u2-CH3COO)6(u3-O)(H2O)3][CF3SO3] in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(pentafluoroethanesulfonyl)-imide ionic liquid was investigated. Cyclic voltammograms using a Platinum electrode indicated deposition had occurred for the [Mo3O2(O2CCH3)6(H2O)(CF3SO2H)2 metal cluster but had not for the polynuclear complex [Cr2Mo(u2-CH3COO)6(u3-O)(H2O)3][CF3SO3]. Constant potential electrolysis of -1.23 V using a platinum foil electrode was performed. Scanning electron microscopy in combination with energy dispersion spectroscopy confirmed that deposition had occurred.

Relationships Among Employee Engagement, Communication Climate, And Employees' Communication Channel Preferences, Jessica Roberts Jan 2013

Relationships Among Employee Engagement, Communication Climate, And Employees' Communication Channel Preferences, Jessica Roberts

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship among communication climate, employee engagement and employees' communication channel preferences. The research established a moderate relationship among communication climate and employee engagement. Although this finding aligns with the current literature, the study failed to establish a relationship between employee engagement and employees' communication channel preferences. The research did document that the top three communication channels for employees of all levels of engagement are face to face, email and poster/flyers/brochures. While Chapter 2 reviewed past literature of communication climate, employee engagement and communication channel preferences it was noted that there is …

Job Crafting: The Pursuit Of Happiness At Work, Cristina D. Kirkendall Jan 2013

Job Crafting: The Pursuit Of Happiness At Work, Cristina D. Kirkendall

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Traditional job satisfaction theories focus on either environmental causes or stable underlying personality characteristics as determinants of job satisfaction, giving very little attention to the possibility that employees may be able to affect their own job satisfaction levels. Recent research on job crafting, however, has provided a source of optimism for changing job satisfaction levels. Job crafting is the processes by which employees actively shape their job to fit their individual needs and unlike the traditional models, it offers hope to those employees that work in a dissatisfying environment or whose personalities may not predispose them to high job satisfaction. …

Dangerous Feminine Sexuality: Biblical Metaphors And Sexual Violence Against Women, Lisa M. Ewing Jan 2013

Dangerous Feminine Sexuality: Biblical Metaphors And Sexual Violence Against Women, Lisa M. Ewing

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This analysis responds to an ongoing debate between feminist and traditional readings of sexually violent (SV) metaphors in the prophetic texts of Hosea, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, and the New Testament book of Revelation. Whereas feminist scholars have often argued that such metaphors are built upon the exploitation of women's sexuality, traditionalist scholars have insisted that the metaphors are merely literary devices that should only be read within their historical and literary contexts. Taking a moderate position, this analysis uses the cognitive metaphor theory to explain that the SV metaphors depend on cognitive associations of dangerous feminine sexuality to relate to …

The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to examine World Trade Center (WTC) leadership response to the hypercrisis of 9/11. Information on surviving leaders of four companies housed in the WTC on 9/11 was gathered from ten sources including journal articles, newspaper article, magazine articles, a book, and a documentary. The information was analyzed for evidence of emotional intelligence according to Daniel Goleman's five-construct model. Phrases drawn from the sources were coded according to construct. Results indicated empathy to be the most prevalent response, followed by self-regulation, relationship management, self-awareness, and self-motivation. A second round of coding classified the …

Impact Of Binaural Beat Technology On Vigilance Task Performance, Psychological Stress And Mental Workload, Elizabeth Ann Shoda Jan 2013

Impact Of Binaural Beat Technology On Vigilance Task Performance, Psychological Stress And Mental Workload, Elizabeth Ann Shoda

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Currently, there is only one published study examining the impact of binaural beats on the performance of a laboratory vigilance task, however this study had mixed results and left many questions unanswered. I further examined this phenomenon by using a successive vigilance task, between-subjects design, and a control condition to determine whether beta frequency binaural beats could affect vigilance performance over time and across conditions. I hypothesized that participants listening to beta binaural beats would have more hits and fewer misses on the vigilance task than participants in the control condition. In addition, I hypothesized that participants listening to beta …

The Effects Of Multicollinearity In Multilevel Models, Patrick Carl Clark Jr. Jan 2013

The Effects Of Multicollinearity In Multilevel Models, Patrick Carl Clark Jr.

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This study examined a method for calculating the impact of multicollinearity on multilevel modeling. The major research questions concerned a) how the simulation design factors affect (multilevel variance inflation factor) MVIF, b) how MVIF affects standard errors of regression coefficients, and c) how MVIF affects significance of regression coefficients. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to address these questions. Predictor relationships were manipulated in order to simulate multicollinearity. Findings indicate that a) increases in relationships among Level 1 predictors and also relationships among Level 2 predictors led to increased MVIF for those specific variables, b) as MVIF increases for a predictor, …

Spatialized Audio And Landmarks In Team Navigation, Andrew Hampton Jan 2013

Spatialized Audio And Landmarks In Team Navigation, Andrew Hampton

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Using data collected from a prior study that established the benefit of spatialized audio on team navigation, the current paper examines the underlying mechanisms by which that benefit arose. With linguistic measures extracted from trial transcripts, I study emergent patterns of conversation for four dyads as they attempt to rendezvous in an immersive virtual environment. Spatialized audio is compared to landmarks, traditionally viewed as integral to navigation tasks, on the basis of coordination and strategy. Analyses reveal that spatialized audio creates a decreased need to speak overall. Paired with the performance advantage, this creates a more linguistically efficient task structure. …

Mining Diversified Decision Trees Across Multiple Datasets To Capture Similarities And Alignable Differences, Qian Han

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation studies the problem of mining shared and alignable difference knowledge structures across multiple datasets/applications. Shared and alignable difference knowledge structures are important for identifying analogies between application domains and for forming new hypothesis in challenging research applications, and for assessing the degree and types of knowledge-level similarities and differences between application domains for use in learning transfer. Generally speaking, shared knowledge structures characterize underlying datasets and highlight conceptual-level structural similarities among the datasets. This dissertation studies the mining of shared decision trees, which are a special type of shared knowledge structures. We first consider building one shared decision …

She Acts Guilty: Sexually Charged Consciousness Of Guilt Evidence Should Be Excluded Because It Is Biased Against Women., Colin Caffrey

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

A lawyer may submit sexually charged evidence under a consciousness of guilt theory. Utilizing this type of evidence convicts women based on their character, not for their alleged crimes, in criminal cases across America. Consciousness of guilt evidence holds bias because it exploits common gender stereotypes in order to obtain criminal convictions. Sexually charged evidence does not directly show a defendant’s guilt, but simply allows the jury to infer guilt based on a defendant’s conduct. Violating gender norms or reacting to the occurrence of a tragedy differently than one might normally expect is not an admission of guilt. Sexually charged …

Certainty In A World Of Uncertainty: Proposing Statutory Guidance In Sentencing Juveniles To Life Without Parole., Sonia Mardarewich

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

In Miller v. Alabama, the United States Supreme Court held that mandatory life sentences without parole imposed upon juveniles was unconstitutional. The Court reasoned that the sentence was cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment. The Court, however, did not hold it was unconstitutional to sentence a juvenile to life without parole if there was “transferred intent” or “reckless disregard.” Nonetheless, the Court effectively abolished state discretion and required sentencing courts to consider an offender’s youth and attendant characteristics as mitigating circumstances. The Court, however, did not specify what sentencing guidelines should dictate. Thus, states are now …

Students' Development And Use Of Internal Representations When Solving Algebraic Tasks, Laban J. Cross Jan 2013

Students' Development And Use Of Internal Representations When Solving Algebraic Tasks, Laban J. Cross

Theses and Dissertations

The difficulty in observing, recording, and examining internal representations has been well documented (Goldin & Shteingold, 2001). However, the important role that these internal representations play in the learning and understanding of mathematical concepts has been noted (Yackel, 2000). This study sought to develop a framework for examining the internalization patterns of school-aged children, gain a deeper understanding of how these internal representations are developed and used, and search for internalization patterns associated with successful generalizations.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six sixth-grade students and six tenth-grade students. During these interviews the students were asked to solve a series of …

Prebiotic carbohydrates are an important component of healthy diet. The objectives of this study were (1) to compare the concentrations of prebiotic carbohydrates in different lentil genotypes and growing locations and (2) to compare the concentrations of prebiotic carbohydrates in lentil under various processing and preparation procedures. Mean concentrations of prebiotics in lentil genotypes were as follows: raffinose-family oligosaccharides (RFO) (raffinose + stachyose, 2509 mg; verbascose, 1562 mg), fructo-oligosaccharides (nystose, 62 mg), sugar alcohols (sorbitol, 1220 mg; mannitol, 203 mg), and resistant starch (RS), 7.5 g 100 g-1. Modest RFO concentration reductions were observed with cooking, cooling, and reheating. Mean …

Human Rights, Civil Rights: Prescribing Disability Discrimination Prevention In Packaging Essential Health Benefits, Anita Silvers, Leslie P. Francis Jan 2013

Human Rights, Civil Rights: Prescribing Disability Discrimination Prevention In Packaging Essential Health Benefits, Anita Silvers, Leslie P. Francis

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

The promise of health care as a right has all too often proved hollow for people with disabilities. In this article, we argue that the understanding of health care as a human right, as found in the CRPD, fails to provide the theoretical machinery for responding to the pressing challenges of health care costs. These challenges are real and potentially devastating. We develop instead an account of health care as a civil right. What this right requires is dependent on the context and resources of the time, so long as all have meaningful access to the benefits provided. The ACA …

Adult Silbing Communication: Attachment Style And Strategy, Erin Melissa Stack Bruflodt Jan 2013

Adult Silbing Communication: Attachment Style And Strategy, Erin Melissa Stack Bruflodt

Communication

In an effort to further understand communication within sibling relationships, this study examined adult sibling relationships and the connection between attachment styles and the strategies or relational maintenance behaviors used to maintain such relationships. The study will employ the theoretical framework of attachment theory originally presented by Bowlby (1973). Scholars agree that the basic principle of attachment theory is that attachment relationships continue to be an important factor throughout the life span. Current research has used this theory to link attachment style with the use of relational maintenance behaviors in voluntary relationships. Having developed this framework, the next logical application …

Rhetorical Agency In The Bhagavad Gita, Jaishikha Nautiyal Jan 2013

Rhetorical Agency In The Bhagavad Gita, Jaishikha Nautiyal

Communication

This M.A. thesis presents a rhetorical analysis of the Indian philosophical and religious text, The Bhagavad Gita. Utilizing Kenneth Burke's Pentad of act, scene, agent, agency and purpose as a primary interpretive lens for uncovering universal human motivations, this rhetorical critique conceptualizes the idea of rhetorical agency as a model for action in the Gita's dialogical progression between Krishna and Arjuna. Rhetorical agency in the Gita differs from a traditional understanding of agency in that the former amalgamates competing yet co-existing pragmatic and consummatory agencies that Arjuna may utilize to act in the here and now but also relinquish the …

Striking For The Guardians And Protectors Of The Mind: The Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Mental Disabilities And The Future Of Guardianship Law, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

In many nations, entry of a guardianship order became the “civil death” of the person affected. It has been accurately characterized as “civil death” characterization because a person subjected to the measure is not only fully stripped of their legal capacity in all matters related to their finance and property, but is also deprived of, or severely restricted in, many other fundamental rights, [including] the right to vote, the right to consent or refuse medical treatment (including forced psychiatric treatment), freedom of association and the right to marry and have a family.

Guardianship is also frequently entered. In Hungary, for …

Online Mental Disability Law Education, A Disability Rights Tribunal, And The Creation Of An Asian Disability Law Database: Their Impact On Research, Training And Teaching Of Law, Criminology Criminal Justice In Asia, Michael L. Perlin, Heather Ellis Cucolo, Yoshikazu Ikehara

Articles & Chapters

Two professors at New York Law School (NYLS) and the director of the Tokyo Advocacy Law Office are engaged in initiatives with the potential to have major influences on the study of law, criminology, and criminal justice: the creation of a Disability Rights Tribunal for Asia and the Pacific (DRTAP), and expansion of NYLS’s online mental disability law program (OMDLP) to include numerous Asian venues.

DRTAP seeks to create a sub-regional body (a Commission and eventually a Court) to hear violations of the UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This will explicitly inspire scholarship about issues such …
