Selling 'Fracking': Legitimation Of High Speed Oil And Gas Extraction In The Marcellus Shale Region, Jacob R. Matz Jan 2013

Selling 'Fracking': Legitimation Of High Speed Oil And Gas Extraction In The Marcellus Shale Region, Jacob R. Matz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The advent of horizontal hydraulic fracture drilling, or 'fracking,' a technology used to access oil and natural gas deposits, has allowed for the extraction of deep, unconventional shale gas and oil deposits in various shale seams throughout the United States and world. One such shale seam, the Marcellus shale, extends from New York State, across Pennsylvania, and throughout West Virginia, where shale gas development has significantly increased within the last decade. This boom has created a massive amount of economic activity surrounding the energy industry, creating jobs for workers, income from leases and royalties for landowners, and profits for energy …

The goal of this research was to promote the use of evidence-based TCC guidelines in physical therapist practice and education by applying principles of knowledge translation as defined by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). According to the NIDDR, research should be framed so that knowledge gained is ultimately applied in a manner geared towards improving the lives of people with disabilities.;Study 1 resulted in a perspectives paper which established a sound clinical rationale for the inclusion of TCC as a component of physical therapist practice. This rationale is based on the pathophysiologic effects of smoking on …

A Broad-Based Decision-Making Assessment Of College Women With Bulimia And Binge-Eating Disorder, Erin Murtha-Berg Jan 2013

A Broad-Based Decision-Making Assessment Of College Women With Bulimia And Binge-Eating Disorder, Erin Murtha-Berg

Theses and Dissertations

Using a broad-based test battery (i.e., the IGT, GDT, BART, and select A-DMC subtests), the current study comprehensively assessed decision-making performance in different situations (e.g., where contingencies were and were not explicit, where the task was administered via computer and pencil-and-paper, where higher quality decision making was reflected by low risk-taking and where higher-quality decision making was reflected by higher risk-taking) in groups with BN and BED compared to each other and to controls in a sample of primarily female college students (N=111). Analyses were run to explore whether these difference could possibly be explained by differences in measures of …

Social Norms' Influence On Gendered Behaviors, Elizabeth Ewing Lee Jan 2013

Social Norms' Influence On Gendered Behaviors, Elizabeth Ewing Lee

Psychology

Individual variability in engagement in gendered behavior is primarily assumed to be the result of variability in gender roles (i.e., femininity, masculinity; Bem, 1981). However, contextual factors have also been shown to influence behaving in gendered ways (Leszczynski & Strough, 2008; Pickard & Strough, 2003). The current studies sought to explore engagement in gendered behaviors by examining the influence of social norms on gendered behaviors, as well as how those perceptions interact with gender self-concepts (i.e., gendered contingencies of selfworth, self-efficacy for behaving in gendered ways, similarity to others of one's sex) to influence engagement in gendered behaviors. Two studies …

The Psychological Benefits Of Positively-Focused Writing, Kelly Laraine Schaible Jan 2013

The Psychological Benefits Of Positively-Focused Writing, Kelly Laraine Schaible

Psychology

Writing about potent positive events has been shown to be associated with physical health benefits in a manner similar to the expressive writing paradigm originally espoused by Pennebaker and Beall (1986). Little has been done to date, however, to explore the potential association of positive writing with aspects of psychological well-being. This project attempted to substantiate results of previous studies that have shown positive writing to be linked with not only the promotion of physical health, but indicators of psychological health such as life satisfaction and positive affect. Participants answered questions regarding their affect, life satisfaction, perceived stress, and physical …

Intuitive Risk Aversion And Reflective Risk Taking In Gain-Framed Economic Games, Tianwei Liu Jan 2013

Intuitive Risk Aversion And Reflective Risk Taking In Gain-Framed Economic Games, Tianwei Liu

Psychology

We typically think of risk taking as impulsive, but evolutionary pressure may actually favor playing it safe as a default strategy. In the context of dual-process theory of reasoning (Evans, 2003), we hypothesized that risk aversion is intuitive for an average decision maker and reflective thinking serves to reduce this intuition. This idea was tested in two studies using economic decision-making tasks. Information processing style was manipulated by forcing fast or slow decisions (Study 1) and by picture priming (Study 2). These manipulations did not affect decisions. We also measured participants' cognitive reflection ability as an individual difference variable in …

Development Of A Program For The Empowerment Of Black Single Mother Families In The Church Congregation, Richardson Honore Jan 2013

Development Of A Program For The Empowerment Of Black Single Mother Families In The Church Congregation, Richardson Honore

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. The most rapid growing family type in the United States is the single parent family. It is the dominant family type in the African-American community. According to the United States Bureau of the Census (2010), 69% of all Black children are born to single mothers. Single mother families are at a dramatically greater risk for drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, suicide, poor educational performance, teen pregnancy, and criminality (National Center for Health Statistics, 1993). These findings are alarming and present great challenges for African-American single mother families. In an attempt to address this crisis, the church, as an …

I Am Aids: Bridging The Gap, Leah Marie Brewster Jan 2013

I Am Aids: Bridging The Gap, Leah Marie Brewster

Nursing

It is estimated that between 252,000 and 312,000 people in the United States are unaware that they are infected with HIV/AIDS and are unaware of their risk for HIV/AIDS transmission to other people (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly, 2003). Placed near the bottom in incidence for HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in the United States, North Dakota has 227 HIV/AIDS (North Dakota Department of Health, 2011). With low prevalence rates, a lack of cohesive healthcare provider groups is a challenge due to low demands for care. The purpose of this project was to identify the needs of persons newly diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and …

Screening And Brief Interventions For Alcohol Use In College Students, Angela Ann Dolalie Kelsch Jan 2013

Screening And Brief Interventions For Alcohol Use In College Students, Angela Ann Dolalie Kelsch

Nursing

College students are recognized as a high-risk group for alcohol problems in the United States. Annually approximately 500,000 college students are unintentionally injured, and more than 1,700 college students die from alcohol-related unintentional injury. In addition, individuals who begin drinking alcohol early in life increase their risk of developing serious alcohol problems later in life. As a result, it is essential that efforts be made to focus on opportunities for alcohol screening and brief intervention where applicable in an attempt to reduce problem drinking behaviors. Alcohol screening and brief interventions for alcohol misuse is an effective way for health care …

Steam Baths, Jeremiah Johnson Jan 2013

Steam Baths, Jeremiah Johnson

Architecture Theses

Today, architecture constitutes the greatest range of the built environment; yet our buildings are causing physiological and mental stress to the public. If architecture is designed intuitively by engaging the public’s senses through innate habits, we can reduce the stress caused by ‘counter-intuitive’ design and delight the guests. This Thesis explores ‘intuitive design’ through an ancient typology—the bathhouse—built cliff-side of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota. By utilizing the concurrent transformative mixed research method, qualitative and quantitative data will present a cohesive analysis to complete the architecture.

Coordination In Disaster Recovery: Implications For Policy And Practice, Sarah Jo Bundy Jan 2013

Coordination In Disaster Recovery: Implications For Policy And Practice, Sarah Jo Bundy

Emergency Management

Disaster scholarship and recent disaster policy in the United States have suggested that coordination of efforts in the disaster recovery process will allow impacted jurisdictions to maximize positive recovery outcomes. Yet it remains unclear exactly who should be, or is, coordinating disaster recovery at the local level. This study explored the role of county elected officials in disaster recovery in an attempt to understand what role these elected officials currently play in the recovery process—particularly as related to the coordination of recovery efforts. During the initial data collection process, the researcher discovered that the role of county elected officials in …

Architectural Mediation: Accommodating Private Development & Public Good, Sarah Lockwood Jan 2013

Architectural Mediation: Accommodating Private Development & Public Good, Sarah Lockwood

Architecture Theses

This Thesis, Architectural Mediation, will explore how to answer the question: how can architecture mediate the interests of private development and public good? The design of a combination transit stop, art gallery, and retail in North Minneapolis will address that question. In order to provide direction for the design, the theoretical premise will be closely followed. It states: “Versatility of space and adaptability of buildings can be used as strategies to mediate the needs of both private development and public good within the same building.” It is important to explore these ideas within a thesis design because: Mediating the needs …

Emergent Urbanism: Architectural Place-Making In Response To A Minnesota High Speed Train Network, Nicholas Sortland Jan 2013

Emergent Urbanism: Architectural Place-Making In Response To A Minnesota High Speed Train Network, Nicholas Sortland

Architecture Theses

The way existing cities are set up and built is unsustainable, and risky. The bulk of new growth is occurring on the fringe of cities, where the streets and buildings have been designed for the automobile as the primary mode of transportation. With the price of gasoline continually climbing, it is not unexpected that this type of development would collapse with the loss of affordable gasoline. If given another way of getting around, the people may change their perceptions of cities and how to live and build within them. It is important to have an alternative form of transportation in …

Effects Of Stereotype Threat On Adolescents' Math And Visual-Spatial Performance., Lisa M. Didonato Jan 2013

Effects Of Stereotype Threat On Adolescents' Math And Visual-Spatial Performance., Lisa M. Didonato

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent research suggests that the gender gap in math performance is closing (Else-Quest, Hyde, & Linn, 2010; Hyde, Lindberg, Linn, Ellis, & Williams, 2008). However, negative stereotypes about girls’ math abilities are still widely held (Bhanot & Jovanovic, 2005; Bleeker & Jacobs, 2004). The gender gap in visual-spatial skills, or the ability to reason about and manipulate mental pictures, still exists in that boys outperform girls on visual-spatial tasks. The current study drew from literature on stereotype threat (i.e., the risk of confirming negative stereotypes about a specific group; Steele, 1997) to investigate the impact of negative math stereotypes on …

Lamotrigine Augmentation Of Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors In Severe And Long-Term Treatment-Resistant Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Manuel Arrojo-Romero, María Tajes Alonso, Jose De Leon

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

The treatment recommendations in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) after lack of response to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) include augmentation with other drugs, particularly clomipramine, a more potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI), or antipsychotics. We present two cases of response to lamotrigine augmentation in treatment-refractory OCD; each received multiple SRI trials over a >10-year period. The first patient had eleven years of treatment with multiple combinations including clomipramine and SSRIs. She had a >50% decrease of Y-BOCS (from 29 to 14) by augmenting paroxetine (60 mg/day) with lamotrigine (100 mg/day). The second patient had 22 years of treatment with multiple combinations, …

Toward Fostering Environmental Political Participation: Framing An Agenda For Environmental Education Research, Brett L. M. Levy, Michaela T. Zint Jan 2013

Toward Fostering Environmental Political Participation: Framing An Agenda For Environmental Education Research, Brett L. M. Levy, Michaela T. Zint

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

Scholars of environmental education (EE) and education for sustainable development (ESD) have been among the environmental leaders calling for individuals to become increasingly engaged in political action aimed at addressing environmental and sustainability issues. Few, however, have studied how educational experiences might foster greater environmental political engagement. Fortunately, there is a rich body of research in political science, psychology, and education that provides insights that EE and ESD scholars and educators can build on. Studies in these domains suggest, for example, that political efficacy (the belief that individuals’ actions can influence political processes) and political interest (individuals’ willingness to pay …
