Love And Belonging: Strategies To Help Mentally Ill Patients, Shirin Rahim

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Love and belonging is a concept, used by Abraham Maslow (a humanistic psychologist) in his motivation theory. Love and belonging is one of the human needs in Maslow's hierarchy and required to be fulfilled in order to achieve self-actualization. According to Lisbeth (2003) “Because of the social nature of humans and the long developmental period from birth to adulthood, the need for love and belonging is closely linked to the need for survival” (p.128). If a child is left with unmet need of love and belonging he may feel difficulties in forming lasting relations in future also and may get …

Theses and Dissertations

Internships have become an integral part of post-secondary education, while also serving as a means for students to distinguish themselves as job candidates. Although internship programs have formally been in place for over a hundred years, surprisingly little research has been done into the topic, even though more than three out of four students participate in at least one internship before they graduate college. The purpose of this study is to develop and test an internship evaluation tool that will help educators distinguish the high quality internship opportunities from low quality ones. Based on management profiling questionnaires that became popular …

Exploring Trust In Perception Of Crime Models In South Africa, Kyshawn Smith, Leroy Hamilton Jr.

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Social capital has been poked and prodded by scores of intellectuals across a vast array of disciplines since 18th century Progressive L.J. Hanifan first coined the term (Hanifan 1916), and its resurgence in popularity over the last 30 years has fueled much contemporary discourse in the social sciences. Particularly in criminology, scores of studies conducted during this period articulate the positive and negative effects of social capital in the creation and maintenance of safe, healthy communities and civil social structures (Jacobs 1961; Coleman 1990; Putnam 2000; White N.d.). Put Your Phone Down Please: Digital Devices And Student Performance, Douglas Duncan

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

The recent increase in use of devices such as laptop computers, iPads and web‐enabled phones has generated concern about how technologies affect student performance. Combining observation, survey, and interview data, our two years of research quantifies the effects of this technology use on student learning. Faculty policy has a strong effect on student behavior, although all 8 faculty members whose classes were studied far underestimated the amount of off‐task use taking place during their teaching (primarily phone use for texting). Our in‐depth interviews with 24 students give insight into the students’ attitudes about technology use, and confirm results from Stanford …

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Individually, sleep disturbances and type 2 diabetes pose pervasive challenges to health. In addition, the negative symptomology associated with each condition is exacerbated further when presenting concomitantly. This relationship formulates a destructive loop wherein those with diabetes experience decreased sleep quality, which, in turn, worsens a wide range of health threats experienced by those with diabetes, including obesity and glucose intolerance. Because major lifestyle changes and daily care are needed to effectively manage both diabetes and sleep disturbances, an efficient and timely modality of treatment is essential. Advanced technology incorporating telemedicine and telehealth has the potential to enhance treatment by …

These have motivated the researcher to create a technology-aided module that is …

Access Control In And For The Real World, Sara Sinclair Nov 2013

Access Control In And For The Real World, Sara Sinclair

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Access control is a core component of any information-security strategy. Researchers have spent tremendous energy over the past forty years defining abstract access-control models and proving various properties about them. However, surprisingly little attention has been paid to how well these models work in real socio-technical systems (i.e., real human organizations). This dissertation describes the results of two qualitative studies (involving 52 participants from four companies, drawn from the financial, software, and healthcare sectors) and observes that the current practice of access control is dysfunctional at best. It diagnoses the broken assumptions that are at the heart of this dysfunction, …

A Literature Review Of Uses And Attitudes Towards The Acceptance Of Assistive Real-Time Technology In The Voice Studio, Jeanine F. Wagner

Research Papers

The human voice is a tool that not only communicates ideas and feelings, but also expresses and elicits emotions. Since the age of Manual Garcia (1805-1906), the inventor of the laryngeal mirror, singers and voice teachers have discussed, argued and philosophized about the most efficient manner in which to train any voice to reach its optimum capability. Singing techniques and the subsequent voice qualities have been strongly divided by cultural and personal preferences. Empiricists carefully guarded their teaching methods and shunned ideas that any other fields might have anything worthwhile to contribute to voice instruction. Voice teachers have been slow …
