Differences In Attitudes Towards People With Disabilities: Examining The Effects Of The Presence Of An Assistance Dog, Jennifer A. Coleman
Differences In Attitudes Towards People With Disabilities: Examining The Effects Of The Presence Of An Assistance Dog, Jennifer A. Coleman
Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with disabilities face various types of social stigma. Research suggests that the presence of an assistance dog leads to an increase in social interactions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether people’s attitudes toward individuals with disabilities differ when pairing that person with an assistance dog. Undergraduate students (N= 244) were randomly assigned to view an individual with a disability either alone or with an assistance dog. Participants rated their attitudes toward the individual, completed a newly developed Implicit Association Test, and answered behavioral intention questions. Results of a hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that individuals with …

Development And Evaluation Of An Ontology-Based Quality Metrics Extraction System, Sina Madani
Development And Evaluation Of An Ontology-Based Quality Metrics Extraction System, Sina Madani
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The Institute of Medicine reports a growing demand in recent years for quality improvement within the healthcare industry. In response, numerous organizations have been involved in the development and reporting of quality measurement metrics. However, disparate data models from such organizations shift the burden of accurate and reliable metrics extraction and reporting to healthcare providers. Furthermore, manual abstraction of quality metrics and diverse implementation of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems deepens the complexity of consistent, valid, explicit, and comparable quality measurement reporting within healthcare provider organizations.
The main objective of this research is to evaluate an ontology-based information extraction framework …

U.S. And Romanian Executive Mba Students: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Ernest A. Capozzoli, David E. Gundersen, Marcel Duhaneanu
Journal of Executive Education
Currently, there are over 260 EMBA programs worldwide with approximately 180 programs resident in the United States. The number of programs available for EMBA students has increased competition for those students. One characteristic of this increased competition between EMBA programs is the addition of global initiatives to expose students to other cultures. Part of this global initiative has resulted in alliances and the establishment of working relationships between educational institutions. To facilitate and enhance the learning experience while in an EMBA program these alliances should consider the impact culture plays in shaping student expectations. This paper addresses the question of …
Teaching Practical Business Ethics, Kurt S. Schulzke
Teaching Practical Business Ethics, Kurt S. Schulzke
Journal of Executive Education
Every ethical dilemma embodies three central questions: What is the optimal ethical outcome? Why should I want the best ethical outcome? Can I achieve the best outcome while preserving professional and personal relationships and, if so, how? Legislative, scholarly, and pedagogical responses to recent ethical and financial scandals involving companies like Enron, Worldcom, Tyco, Parmalat, and Ahold have focused almost exclusively on the first two questions, leaving the third unanswered. This article engages the third question by presenting a pedagogical tool for encouraging executives to personalize and operationalize business ethics.
Integrating Principle-Centered Leadership Into The Business Curriculum: Lessons From The Lmu Experience, William Lindsey, Larry Pate
Integrating Principle-Centered Leadership Into The Business Curriculum: Lessons From The Lmu Experience, William Lindsey, Larry Pate
Journal of Executive Education
This article focuses on the challenge of designing and administering executive education programs that both educate students to be competitive in the job market and that also encourage personal growth and personal responsibility. We believe that graduate business education should not be limited to providing content knowledge, but should also include helping students mature and use better judgment. This article represents a “progress report” on our efforts at LMU in Los Angeles to integrate principle-centered leadership into our Executive MBA (EMBA) curricula. This effort emphasizes self-awareness and self-reflection as well as skills and competencies. This article discusses the challenges inherent …
Conceptualizing Communication Capital For A Changing Environment, Leo Wayne Jeffres, Guowei Jian, Sukki Yoon
Conceptualizing Communication Capital For A Changing Environment, Leo Wayne Jeffres, Guowei Jian, Sukki Yoon
Communication Faculty Publications
With rapidly evolving technologies, boundaries between traditional modes of communication have blurred, creating an environment that scholars still describe from viewpoints as researchers in interpersonal, organizational or mass communication. This manuscript looks at the social capital literature and argues for conceptualizing “communication capital” to help understand the impact of communication phenomena in a changing environment. The literature has treated interpersonal communication variables as components of social capital and mass communication variables as factors affecting social capital, but scholars long ago recognized their reinforcing nature, leading us to develop a concept of communication capital merging symbolic activity across domains in its …

The Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument-Version 2 (MAYSI-2) is a brief screening tool used to identify youth in the juvenile justice system that are at-risk for mental health related difficulties. The MAYSI-2 was administered to 5,205 African American and Latino/a youth throughout Chicago, Illinois who were on probation and residing in the community. This study investigated differences (i.e., legal status, gender, age, race/ethnicity) in reporting of mental health symptoms and substance use on the MAYSI-2. Females scored above the clinical cutoffs more frequently than males and there were few differences found between diverted and adjudicated youth. Age comparisons revealed mixed results. …

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
The call of this Article was to take "A Prospective Look" at Environmental and Natural Resources Law for the next 40 years with a special focus on law school teaching. Daunted by the hubris involved in prognosticating so far into the future, this piece more modestly explores three areas in which law school teaching is currently changing: I. Methods of Presentation; II. Use of Skills Exercises; and III. Influence of Digital Technologies and the Internet. To add an empirical component, the author canvassed AALS members about pedagogies they used both in class and outside of classroom time, as well as …
Examining Rate Of Play With Varying Speed And Win Rate On Simulated Slot Machines, Sarah J. Seibring
Examining Rate Of Play With Varying Speed And Win Rate On Simulated Slot Machines, Sarah J. Seibring
Research Papers
When gambling in a casino, there are many factors (other than the games itself) that add to the effects of the experience. The social contingencies have a large influence over the amount a patron will bet and time spent at the casino. Previous studies also show the use of confederates will have an influence over the rate of the observed behavior. Researchers chose to utilize a confederate to gamble and display excitement when a win was reached throughout all sessions. Researchers also manipulated the speed at which the simulated slot machine spins as well as the win rate. These manipulated …

Library Scholarship
MOOCs give librarians new opportunities to help shape the conversation about changes in higher education and to guide administrators, faculty, and students through these changes. To assume this role, librarians must understand the MOOCs landscape. Numerous stakeholders will have an interest in the massive intellectual property that ultimately resides in libraries' owned and licensed digital repositories. Studying and adopting technologies to manage and monitor MOOC usage of library resources will be essential to controlling access and tightening Internet safeguards.

Tight Void, Brooke Burns
Tight Void, Brooke Burns
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a memoir that draws on the life experience of two promiscuous women, Brooke and Karen. Both characters come from upper-middle class backgrounds, have extremely similar family lives, and take two very different paths in both their education and sexual behavior. While the women both retain their strong friendship throughout the narrative, eventually, Karen, and her decision to become a prostitute, takes its toll. Though they remain supportive of one another, Karen's lifestyle of sex, drugs, and partying begin to create a disconnect between them. This thesis sheds light on the true nature of female promiscuity: its relation …

Evaluating Online Forums As A Customer Service Tool For Consumer Products, Kaveepan Lertwachara, Gregg Erickson
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
In this study, we capture communication activities on 14 online forums that are implemented primarily to provide customer service for consumers of mobile phones and MP3 players. We perform a large scale analysis to investigate the social nature and the effectiveness of using online forums as a customer service tool. Unlike previous studies, our research examines a complete archive of the actual communication activities on online forums that are publicly available to general consumers. Our comparative and social network analysis allows us to compare the structural differences among these social networks.

Insight, Neurocognition, And Schizophrenia: Predictive Value Of The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, John Stratton, Philip T. Yanos, Paul Lysaker
Publications and Research
Lack of insight in schizophrenia is a key feature of the illness and is associated with both positive and negative clinical outcomes. Previous research supports that neurocognitive dysfunction is related to lack of insight, but studies have not examined how neurocognition relates to change in insight over time. Therefore, the current study sought to understand how performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) differed between participants with varying degrees of change in insight over a 6-month period. Fifty-two patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were administered the WCST and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline, and the …

Getting Heads Into The Cloud: Pre-Adoption Beliefs And Attitudes, Christopher P. Furner
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper reports on the first phase of a 2-phase confirmation-disconfirmation study in which we conduct a pre-implementation survey of employees at a mid-sized university who are about to have their desktop computers replaced with cloud based systems. Specifically, we are interested in their pre-adoption attitudes toward the system and use intentions. We test a model that predicts pre-adoption attitudes based on individual characteristics including compter self efficacy and perceptions of the IT department that will be implementing the cloud system (perceptions of trust and service quality). We find that perceptions of the IT department influence pre-adoption perceptions of control …
