How Are The Children: Challenges And Opportunities In Improving Children's Mental Health, Ramona W. Denby, Sandra D. Owens, Sarah Kern
How Are The Children: Challenges And Opportunities In Improving Children's Mental Health, Ramona W. Denby, Sandra D. Owens, Sarah Kern
Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs
The mental health of children is critical to their growth and development, but when their well-being is considered, discussions more often gravitate toward physical health, nutrition, education, parental influences, and living conditions. While these all represent important indicators of well-being, discussions also need to consider the importance of children’s mental and behavioral health. In this brief we explore the status of Southern Nevada’s children as it relates to mental health outcomes. Like physical health, good mental health is paramount to children’s overall functioning and maturation. Frequently when a child experiences mental and behavioral health challenges, signs and symptoms manifest in …
Allied Health Students’ Perceptions Of Class Difficulty: The Case Of Undergraduate Human Anatomy And Physiology Classes, Diana Sturges, Trent Mauner
Allied Health Students’ Perceptions Of Class Difficulty: The Case Of Undergraduate Human Anatomy And Physiology Classes, Diana Sturges, Trent Mauner
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP) course is required of all allied health majors. Students need to earn a grade of “C” or better, and many students find this class academically challenging. This study investigated allied health students’ perceptions of what makes the undergraduate class difficult. Methods: A 28-question survey targeted 403 students enrolled in three HAP sections taught by the same instructor. Results: Students returned 279 surveys (68% return rate). Qualitative and quantitative data supported a three factor model in making this class difficult: discipline, student, and teaching related factors. Students consider that discipline factors are more important …

A Silent Killer Of India’S Women: Investigating The Barriers To Adequate Tuberculosis Treatment And Diagnosis For Women In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Evonne Mcarthur
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Nearly 20 years ago, the World Health Organization declared tuberculosis as a global public health emergency, yet today TB still remains a major global health challenge. It is estimated that during 2012 8.6 million were infected with TB and 1.3 million died from the disease (WHO, 2013). Globally, more than one third of the population is infected with TB and, after HIV/AIDS, TB is the greatest killer world-wide due to a single infectious agent. 95 percent of the global TB burden lies within low and middle-income countries and among the 22 countries determined to be high epidemiological burden countries, India …
Illuminating Rlung: The Vital Energy Of Tibetan Medicine, Alma Rominger
Illuminating Rlung: The Vital Energy Of Tibetan Medicine, Alma Rominger
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
According to Tibetan Medicine, rlung is one of the three principal energies of the human body; rlung can be translated loosely as “wind” because its predominate element is air. It is responsible for all movement internal and external to the body, from the circulation of blood to the movement of limbs. rLung is the “vehicle” of consciousness, the force which holds and moves the mind. According to the rGyud-bZhi, the traditional Tibetan medical text, rlung is the beginning and end of disease because of its pervasive nature and its close relationship with the mind; it has the power to spread …
Analysis Of Environmental Factors Affecting Fruit Quality For The 2007 Growing Season In A California Vineyard, Sean Castorani
Analysis Of Environmental Factors Affecting Fruit Quality For The 2007 Growing Season In A California Vineyard, Sean Castorani
SNS Master's Theses
Wine grape quality is heavily influenced by a combination of soil properties and site topography. We used anthocyanin content and yield data from Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard near Madera, California collected during the 2007 growing season. We compared sets of hypotheses regarding the anthocyanin content of winegrapes and vineyard yields as a function of vineyard soil and topographic properties. Each hypothesis was expressed as a regression model predicting a response variable (yield or anthocyanin content) from one or more predictor variables. We used a multiple working hypotheses approach to compare these models using information theoretic …
An Integrated Plasma Spectroscopic And Capacitive Sensing Platform For Water Quality Diagnostics, John William Sweeney
An Integrated Plasma Spectroscopic And Capacitive Sensing Platform For Water Quality Diagnostics, John William Sweeney
Doctoral Dissertations
Even in modern times, the consumption of polluted water continues to inflict tremendous suffering on millions of people worldwide that is largely preventable with adequate sanitation practices, routine water quality diagnostics, and treatment. However, conventional water quality monitoring practices remain a time consuming endeavor, where water samples collected on-site are transported to off-site laboratories for evaluation with laboratory-scale chemical analysis devices. While considerable efforts have been made to miniaturize these devices for in-field use, many of the devices reported in the literature provide an incomplete assessment of a water contaminant's environmental impact by focusing on identifying its chemical composition and …

Preparing Public Librarians For Consumer Health Information Service: A Nation-Wide Study, L. Luo, Van M. Ta Park
Faculty Publications
A nationwide survey study was conducted to gain understanding as to how to prepare public librarians for consumer health information service. Findings indicate that the popular health information needs encountered by public librarians cover a wide variety of topics, including the human body, a medical/health condition, a disease, a medical concept, and fitness/diet/nutrition. The top two challenges faced by public librarians when providing consumer health information service are difficulty in interpreting patrons' questions and lack of knowledge about available and trusted/appropriate medical/health information sources. Public librarians wish to receive training on a number of topics that could help address the …

Sequestration And Scavenging Of Iron In Infection, Nermi Lee Parrow, Robert E. Fleming, Michael F. Minnick
Sequestration And Scavenging Of Iron In Infection, Nermi Lee Parrow, Robert E. Fleming, Michael F. Minnick
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The proliferative capability of many invasive pathogens is limited by the bioavailability of iron. Pathogens have thus developed strategies to obtain iron from their host organisms. In turn, host defense strategies have evolved to sequester iron from invasive pathogens. This review explores the mechanisms employed by bacterial pathogens to gain access to host iron sources, the role of iron in bacterial virulence, and iron-related genes required for the establishment or maintenance of infection. Host defenses to limit iron availability for bacterial growth during the acute-phase response and the consequences of iron overload conditions on susceptibility to bacterial infection are also …

Making The American Body, Jonathan Black
Making The American Body, Jonathan Black
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
If you thought the fitness craze was about being healthy, think again. Although Charles Atlas, Jack LaLanne, Jim Fixx, Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons, and Jillian Michaels might well point the way to a better body, they have done so only if their brands brought in profits. In the first book to tell the full story of the American obsession with fitness and how we got to where we are today, Jonathan Black gives us a backstage look at an industry and the people that have left an indelible mark on the American body and the consciousness it houses. Spanning the …

Food Safety Education For Hispanic And Native American Audiences Using The Conceptual Change Model, Julie A. Albrecht
Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series
Results from three research studies (USDA funded grants) indicated a need for food safety education for Hispanic and Native American families with young children. Focus groups and surveys results indicated that these two diverse audiences had less food safety knowledge and that some food handling practices could impact the safety of their family; in particular their children. Certain populations are at greater risk of contracting food‐related illnesses and these groups include children and prenatal women. Several factors that contribute to foodborne illness susceptibility in children include underdeveloped immune systems, lower body weight, the sensitive nature of fetal development, and the …

Prevention Of Type 2 Diabetes (T2dm) In South Africa - A Focus On Facilitating Physical Activity Behaviour Change In Peri-Urban Youth, Carmen Anderson, Anica Jansen Van Vuuren, Despina Learmonth
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This paper focuses on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and the significant health implications it has on individuals living in currently disadvantaged peri-urban areas in South Africa. Given the significant public health and socio-economic burden South Africa faces due to scarce resources and escalating rates of chronic diseases, prevention strategies which impact on modifiable risk factors for T2DM are vital. The population of interest was children and adolescents living in informal settlements on the outskirts of Cape Town. The suggested behaviour change was the increase and maintenance of a more physically active and healthy lifestyle, thereby facilitating weight loss and …

Risk Factors For Overweight/Obesity In Preschool Children: An Ecological Approach, Dipti A. Dev, Brent A. Mcbride, Barbnara H. Fiese, Blake Jones, Hyunkeun Cho, Strong Kids Research Team
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Background—Identification of risk factors is critical to preventing the childhood obesity epidemic. Risk factors that contribute to obesity are multifactorial. However, limited research has focused on identifying obesity risk factors using an ecological approach.
Methods—Baseline self-report survey data from the STRONG Kids program were used. The sample consisted of 329 parent-child dyads recruited from childcare programs in east-central Illinois. Child height and weight were measured and converted to age- and sex-specific z-scores using standard growth charts. An ecological model provided the theoretical framework for the selection of 22 previously reported childhood obesity risk factors. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used …

Tier 3 Intervention: Dropout Recovery, Paige T. Lembeck, Reece L. Peterson
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Conclusion
Given the multitude of problems associated with dropping out of school, it is surprising that only a small number of programs focus specifically on recovering dropouts. Although Steinberg and Almeida (2004) argue that college readiness must become the standard, the general consensus throughout the existing literature on dropout recovery suggests that the ultimate goal of recovery programs should be preparing these individuals for life in general, not just college. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of dropout recovery programs as a whole has not been evaluated using rigorous experimental methods (Bloom, 2010). However, some of the specific programs mentioned are supported by …

Sentencing The Family: Recognizing The Needs Of Dependent Children In The Administration Of The Criminal Justice System, Tamar Lerer
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
Hundreds of thousands of incarcerated persons are parents; in many instances, their incarceration has profound effects on their young children. Despite the predictable harm that the these children experience when their caretakers are incarcerated, the criminal justice system lacks a uniform, principled, and transparent way to consider their interests at critical stages in the process.
In this Article, I argue that the interests of the children of incarcerated offenders should be considered and demonstrate how this can be done. The paper proceeds in three Parts. In the first Part, I explain why we should care about caretaker incarceration: it harms …

Halloysite Nanotube Composites For Sustained Release Of Antimocrobial Agents (Antiseptics And Antibiotics), Wenbo Wei
Doctoral Dissertations
Encapsulation of antimicrobial agents (simple antiseptics and more specific antibiotics) within micro-scale and nano-scale containers may provide prolonged and more evenly distributed drug release. One of such containers proposed at Louisiana Tech is natural halloysite clay nanotubes. Halloysite is an aluminosilicate tube with a length of approximately 1 µm, outer diameter of approximately 50 nm, and internal lumen of 15 nm. The chemical composition of halloysite is similar to more common clay–kaolinite, and it can be described as rolled sheets of kaolinite. Halloysite, loaded with drugs inside its lumen, has shown aqueous release of the loaded chemicals over 10-20 hours …

A Comparative Analysis Of Physical Activity And Wellness Through The Adult Life Stages Based Upon High School Varsity Athletic Participation, Joseph J. Lovell
Dissertations
The continual decline in health and wellness and the potential impact on society, including the economic, social, physical, and emotional perspectives is a concern for health professionals. Specifically, there are concerns about the lifestyle habits as individuals’ transition through the lifespan from childhood to late adulthood. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of high school varsity athletic participation on physical activity and wellness in the adult life stages: young, middle, and late. The researcher hypothesized that individuals that participated in high school varsity athletics would report higher levels of physical activity and higher wellness scores (social, …

United States Public Health Resources
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) belonging to certain serogroups (e.g., O157 and O26) can cause serious conditions like hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), but other strains might be equally pathogenic. While virulence factors, like stx and eae, have been well studied, little is known about the prevalence of the E. coli hemolysin genes (hlyA, ehxA, e-hlyA, and sheA) in association with these factors. Hemolysins are potential virulence factors, and ehxA and hlyA have been associated with human illness, but the significance of sheA is unknown. Hence, 435 E. coli strains belonging to 62 different O serogroups …
