Illinois Critical Access Hospitals: Managing Healthy Communities In Rural Illinois, Melissa Henriksen, Norman Walzer
Reports, Whitepapers, Articles, and Other Publications
The Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network (ICAHN), working with the Center for Governmental Studies (CGS) at Northern Illinois University recently released, “Illinois Critical Access Hospitals: Managing Healthy Communities in Rural Illinois,” the third in a series of white papers focused on rural health care issues. The ICAHN and CGS worked with hospital administrators across rural Illinois to examine PHM challenges, alternative revenue models, and promising practices that can help small hospitals respond to the new health care environment. The report identifies population health management approaches currently underway in Illinois critical access hospitals (CAHs) and other health care organizations. It also …

Academy Of Nutrition And Dietetics Benchmarks For Nutrition In Child Care 2011: Are Child-Care Providers Across Contexts Meeting Recommendations?, Dipti A. Dev, Brent A. Mcbride, Strong Kids Research Team
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Academy) recommends feeding practices for child-care providers to establish nutrition habits in early childhood to prevent obesity. With >12 million US children in child care, little is known about child-care providers’ feeding practices. The purpose of this study was to examine child-care providers’ feeding practices to assess whether providers met the Academy’s benchmarks and whether attainment of benchmarks varied across child-care contexts (Head Start, Child and Adult Care Food Program [CACFP], and non-CACFP). Cross-sectional data was collected in 2011 and 2012 from 118 child-care providers who completed self-administered surveys regarding their feeding practices for …

Origin And Differential Selection Of Allelic Variation At Tas2r16 Associated With Salicin Bitter Taste Sensitivity In Africa, Michael Campbell
Origin And Differential Selection Of Allelic Variation At Tas2r16 Associated With Salicin Bitter Taste Sensitivity In Africa, Michael Campbell
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
Bitter taste perception influences human nutrition and health, and the genetic variation underlying this trait may play a role in disease susceptibility. To better understand the genetic architecture and patterns of phenotypic variability of bitter taste perception, we sequenced a 996 bp region, encompassing the coding exon of TAS2R16, a bitter taste receptor gene, in 595 individuals from 74 African populations, and in 94 non-Africans from 11 populations. We also performed genotype-phenotype association analyses of threshold levels of sensitivity to salicin, a bitter anti-inflammatory compound, in 296 individuals from Central and East Africa. In addition, we characterized TAS2R16 mutants in …

Soil Nutrient Availability Properties Of Biochar, Nicole C. Esposito
Soil Nutrient Availability Properties Of Biochar, Nicole C. Esposito
Master's Theses
Biochar’s high porosity and negative surface charge allows for numerous soil and plant benefits such as increased water retention, high nutrient availability, and plant growth. By analysing biochar’s effect of all of these factors, a system can be put in place in which soils can be remediated with the proper soil amendments. This report discusses and tests the effects of varying rates of biochar on pH levels, cation exchange capacity, and nutrient exchangeability (of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium) in soil. Corn plants were also grown in soils of varying amendment types and analysed for plant growth and germination to …

The Perception Of Maternal Anemia And The Effect Of Nutritional Education: A Qualitative Analysis Among Village Mothers In Rural Kumaon, Uk, Kelsey Bash
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Malnutrition is often associated with starving children in developing countries. However, while calorie and protein deficiencies—macronutrient deficiencies—are a cause for concern, micronutrient deficiencies can be equally detrimental and are even more pervasive. The most prevalent micronutrient deficiency is anemia, and the story of anemia in India is particularly grim. India has the largest number of anemic people in the world and severe anemia is the cause of death for an average of 22,000 Indians each year (The Micronutrient Initiative 2006). Anemia rates are exacerbated for women and even more so for pregnant women. According to the most recent National Family …

There Are No Fat People In The Netherlands: Embodied Identities, Hypervisibility, And The Contextual Relevancy Of Fatness, Jean Ochterski
There Are No Fat People In The Netherlands: Embodied Identities, Hypervisibility, And The Contextual Relevancy Of Fatness, Jean Ochterski
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research is the product of a month long exploratory study on fatness in the Netherlands and how it intersects with other marginalized identities, including race, class, and queerness. The primary question it answers is the ways in which hypervisibility of fat bodies interplays with the silences surrounding size as an axis of identity. The research removes fatness from solely conversations in the public health field and re-situates it in a feminist, academic framework. Data was obtained through oral history interviews with seven self identified fat people currently living the Netherlands. The results show that childhood, dieting practices, standards of …

In 2012, the World Organisation for Animal Health adopted 10 ‘General Principles for the Welfare of Animals in Livestock Production Systems’ to guide the development of animal welfare standards. The General Principles draw on half a century of scientific research relevant to animal welfare: (1) how genetic selection affects animal health, behaviour and temperament; (2) how the environment influences injuries and the transmission of diseases and parasites; (3) how the environment affects resting, movement and the performance of natural behaviour; (4) the management of groups to minimize conflict and allow positive social contact; (5) the effects of air quality, temperature …
