BACKGROUND: Improving saccharification efficiency in bioenergy crop species remains an important challenge. Here, we report the characterization of a Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) mutant, named REDforGREEN (RG), as a bioenergy feedstock.
RESULTS: It was found that RG displayed increased accumulation of lignin in leaves and depletion in the stems, antithetic to the trend observed in wild type. Consistent with these measurements, the RG leaf tissue displayed reduced saccharification efficiency whereas the stem saccharification efficiency increased relative to wild type. Reduced lignin was linked to improved saccharification in RG stems, but a chemical shift to greater S:G ratios in RG stem …
Long-Term Preservation Of Breadfruit, Cassava, And Taro By Solar-Drying In The Pacific Islands Area, Jonathan Pratt Rowe
Long-Term Preservation Of Breadfruit, Cassava, And Taro By Solar-Drying In The Pacific Islands Area, Jonathan Pratt Rowe
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Cassava, taro, and breadfruit are critical food sources indigenous to the Pacific islands. Because they serve as the main source of energy for 500 million people, their availability is vital to the survival of these people. In addition to the energy provided, these plants also provide essential vitamins and minerals. Generally, cassava, taro, and breadfruit are grown with relative ease and abundance. Their physical and chemical properties, however, are not conducive to storage, and as a result, much is wasted.
Snp Discovery In Quinoa, Nathan Coles, Dr. Craig E. Coleman
Snp Discovery In Quinoa, Nathan Coles, Dr. Craig E. Coleman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa, Willd) is an allotetraploid plant species native to the Andean highland regions from Colombia to Argentina. Quinoa has traditionally been and still is an important staple grain of various Andean communities, especially those in the rural and impoverished regions of Peru and Bolivia. Quinoa is an excellent source of protein and vitamins to these communities, specifically because the highland Andes are not well-suited for the cultivation or production of temperate crops or large livestock. Additionally, quinoa is a gluten-free grain and can be used as a wheat alternative for those with celiacs disease. Quinoa has been embraced …

Attractive Advertising, Michael Westover
Attractive Advertising, Michael Westover
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The world is inundated with images of highly attractive and underweight models (e.g. Joseph 1982). These models are commonly seen in many types of advertising, endorsing every product imaginable. Thin models create a standard of beauty that many females strive to emulate (e.g. Hebl & Heatherton, 1998). Although the practice of using underweight models is very common, there has been little research to validate its use. Advertising research during recent years has focused on the effectiveness of endorsers (e.g. Ohanian, 1991), but little research has been done to evaluate the relationship between endorser weight and purchase intent. These thoughts lead …

Theory Of Planned Behavior To Predict Multivitamin/Mineral Use, Heather Petraszko
Theory Of Planned Behavior To Predict Multivitamin/Mineral Use, Heather Petraszko
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This health behavior research study utilizes the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explore female collegiate lightweight rowers' (FCLR) decision to use multivitamin/mineral supplements (MVS). This study aimed to determine the relationship between FCLR salient beliefs, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control (PBC) towards MVS, intention to use MVS, and use of MVS. Subjects were recruited from sixteen collegiate lightweight women's rowing programs within the United States and Canada and asked to complete an online survey. Results confirmed that the subjects' attitudes and PBC, but not subjective norms, were associated with intention to use MVS. In agreement with TPB …

BACKGROUND:
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection has become relevant to blood transfusion practice because isolated cases of blood transmission have been reported and because HEV has been found to cause chronic infection and severe liver disease in immunocompromised patients.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS:
We tested for immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM antibodies to the HEV and for HEV RNA in 1939 unselected volunteer US blood donors. Subsequently, we tested the same variables in pre- and serial posttransfusion samples from 362 prospectively followed blood recipients to assess transfusion risk.
RESULTS:
IgG anti-HEV seroprevalence in the total 1939 donations was 18.8%: 916 of …

A Comparison Of The Impact Of A Heart-Healthy Diet Versus Paleolithic Nutrition On Hyperlipidemia In Adults, Robert Pastore
A Comparison Of The Impact Of A Heart-Healthy Diet Versus Paleolithic Nutrition On Hyperlipidemia In Adults, Robert Pastore
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Paleolithic nutrition can optimize serum lipids in adults with hyperlipidemia who have been on a heart-healthy diet based on the current recommendations by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (the Academy) or the American Heart Association (AHA). Twenty subjects (10 male and 10 female) age 40 to 62 were selected based on the criteria of a diagnosis of hypercholesterolemia. Subjects were not taking any cholesterol lowering medication and had followed a calorie-controlled diet, based on either the dietary principles of the Academy or the AHA, for at least four months followed by a Paleolithic diet for four months. Multivariate analysis …
Applying Design To Learning: Cognitive Science Supports Visual Language Principles In The Design Of Effective Reading Materials, Lou Tetlan
Learn X Design Conference Series
This experimental study examined whether formatting of textbook content influenced reader engagement, understanding or recall of topics. The 48-student population, ages 18-25, represented equal numbers of males| females with two levels of reader-ability, proficient and remedial. Four topics on nutrition were redesigned in grayscale to create three additional formats for each topic: original text with graphic mark-ups; chunked text; and visual language format, thereby producing 16 topic-format stimuli. After participants read four separate topics, each in a different format, they completed: a Personal Background Form; Multiple Choice Test; Prior Knowledge Form; written Survey; verbal responses to Open-ended Questions regarding formats …
Historical Skeletal Remains From Dundas County, Ontario: A Cautionary Tale Concerning Individual Identification, Lynda Wood, Janet Young
Historical Skeletal Remains From Dundas County, Ontario: A Cautionary Tale Concerning Individual Identification, Lynda Wood, Janet Young
Northeast Historical Archaeology
A single burial dating to the historic period was unexpectedly discovered on a farm in rural Dundas County, Ontario. Based on a preliminary investigation, the remains were believed to be those of Margaret Ellen Bellway, an 8-year-old girl who lived on the property and who died in the year 1881. The objectives of this article are to demonstrate that establishing individual identification of historical remains is possible, to demonstrate the importance of exploring all relevant avenues of research prior to finalizing individual identification, and to demonstrate the means by which this is done. Skeletal analysis of the remains indicated a …
