A major factor involved in the risk of developing cancer with the probability of enhancing or suppressing carcinogens is dietary composition. A chemoprevention approach to cancer means preventing this disease by the administration of one or several compounds. For a number of years, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has shown in studies to be an effective chemopreventive agent, but there have also been some studies disproving the effectiveness of NAC.1, 2 This is because NAC has different functions in different cell types. Because of this, we decided to test the effectiveness of NAC against DNA damage in human HepG2 cells and to determine …
Anterior-Posterior Limb Position Is Dependent On The Relative Timing Of Key Embryonic Events, Tyler Prestwich, Dr. Michael Stark
Anterior-Posterior Limb Position Is Dependent On The Relative Timing Of Key Embryonic Events, Tyler Prestwich, Dr. Michael Stark
Journal of Undergraduate Research
To better understand embryonic events leading to the determination of limb position along the anterior-posterior (A-P) axis, we compared pre-limb bud stage developmental morphology of three vertebrate organisms: chicken, goose and swan. These organisms were selected because of the differences each exhibit with regard to the A-P location of the forelimbs, or more specifically, the number of cervical vertebrae. By observing disparities between the embryonic morphologies of the different species, we were able to identify specific morphological distinctions that correlate with A-P patterning. Based on the data obtained, we hypothesize a mechanism whereby a delay in embryonic “differentiation” in relationship …

Selenium Moderation Of Estrogen Receptor-Beta (Er-B) Activation: A Mechanism For Prostate Cancer Chemoprevention, Josie Johnson, Dr. Merrill J. Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men (1). Results from a prospective cancer prevention trial showed that Se supplementation reduced prostate cancer incidence by 63% (2). One molecular mechanism by which Se may protect against prostate cancer is moderation of the conformation and associated activity of redox-regulated proteins, including some transcription factors (3). Previous work in our laboratory showed that Se affects the expression of genes responsive to the redox-regulated transcription factor NF-kB in human prostate cancer (LNCaP) cells (4). Estrogen receptor-beta (ER-b) is another redox-regulated transcription factor. We report that Se treatment of LNCaP …
The Role Of Ap-1 And Related Inhibitors In Cortisol Secretion And Inflammation, D. Craig Seager, Dr. Allan Judd
The Role Of Ap-1 And Related Inhibitors In Cortisol Secretion And Inflammation, D. Craig Seager, Dr. Allan Judd
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) increases the secretion of cortisol from bovine adrenal zona fasciculata (ZF) and human adrenal tumor H295R cells. However, the biochemical mechanisms involved in IL- 6-stimulated cortisol secretion are not well understood. In previous studies, it has been determined that IL-6 increases the phosphorylation of Janus kinases (JAK) and signal transducer and activators of transcription (STATs). In many tissues, the JAK-STAT pathway and the activator protein-1 (AP-1) pathways interact. AP-1 is composed of homodimers and heterodimers of the proteins c-Fos, c-Jun, JunB, and JunD. Therefore, in this study we determined the effects of IL-6 on the cellular content of …

Pastures For Horses, Robert Coleman
Pastures For Horses, Robert Coleman
Kentucky Grazing Conference
The horse evolved as a grazing animal. In order to consume enough forage to meet the horses’ nutritional needs a significant amount of time would be spent each day grazing. The pattern of selecting forage-moving to the next area starting to graze again can easily translate into 14 to 16 hours of grazing activity each day. The level of grazing activity will also be affected by the available forage and the daily access to pasture.
Pastures For Goats And Sheep, Greg Brann
Pastures For Goats And Sheep, Greg Brann
Kentucky Grazing Conference
Pasture for sheep is not that different than that for cattle but pasture for goats is very different. Sheep are grazers like cattle whereas goats are browsers like deer. Even though grass and clover are not a goats preference if all of the forage present is grass and clover goats will eat it. Due to goats and sheep being more prey animals than cattle they don’t like to wade off into tall vegetation, also it takes more energy for them to move through tall growth. Many plants that we traditionally consider weeds become desirable forbs when goats or sheep are …

(How I Think About) Kentucky's Pastures: One Of Kentucky's Untapped Resources, Jimmy C. Henning
Kentucky Grazing Conference
One of the privileges of old(er) age is the prerogative to take liberties with assigned tasks. At the risk of confusing producers and offending more scientifically-current forage scientists, the topic of pasture as an untapped resource presented an opportunity to address task from an unexpected angle. Certainly, Kentucky’s pastures are a resource with untapped potential. But the idea that their value as a resource depends on how we think about them is one worth pursuing.

Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: The increasing amount of textual information in biomedicine requires effective term recognition methods to identify textual representations of domain-specific concepts as the first step toward automating its semantic interpretation. The dictionary look-up approaches may not always be suitable for dynamic domains such as biomedicine or the newly emerging types of media such as patient blogs, the main obstacles being the use of non-standardised terminology and high degree of term variation.

Clinical & Translational Sciences
Probiotics have been used as alternative prevention and therapy modalities in intestinal inflammatory disorders including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Pathophysiology of IBD and NEC includes the production of diverse lipid mediators, including platelet-activating factor (PAF) that mediate inflammatory responses in the disease. PAF is known to activate NF-kB, however, the mechanisms of PAF-induced inflammation are not fully defined. We have recently described a novel PAF-triggered pathway of NF-κB activation and IL-8 production in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), requiring the pivotal role of the adaptor protein Bcl10 and its interactions with CARMA3 and MALT1. The current studies …

Objective: To assess performance of the WHO revised verbal autopsy tool for ascertaining the causes of still birth in comparison with reference standard cause of death ascertained by standardized clinical and supportive data.
Methods: All stillbirths at a tertiary hospital in Karachi, Pakistan were prospectively recruited into study from August 2006- February 2008. The reference standard cause of death was established by two senior obstetricians within 48 hours using the ICD coding system. Verbal autopsy interviews using modified WHO tool were conducted by trained health workers within 2- 6 weeks of still birth and the cause of death …

Cultural And Western Influences On The Nutrition Transition In Thailand, Katherine Craven, Dr. Steven Hawks
Cultural And Western Influences On The Nutrition Transition In Thailand, Katherine Craven, Dr. Steven Hawks
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The impact of economic development on nutrition and dietary changes in transitional countries has been well researched. It has generally been found that there is a positive correlation between economic development and negative nutritional transitions. As a country becomes economically wealthier, its population tends to exhibit unhealthy eating and dieting behaviors. Populations with little history of obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases begin to show increased occurrence of such problems, demonstrating a progression within the nutrition transition model (figure 1). However, the impact of western influences and culture on the nutrition transition has been less studied.
