Bioluminescent bays resulting from dense concentrations of bioluminescent dinoflagellates are rare, with only 14 documented systems worldwide. One of these bays, Mangrove Lagoon, is located in Salt River Bay National Park in St. Croix, USVI. Very little is known about the environmental factors responsible for maintaining the high dinoflagellate densities in this lagoon. In order to assess the dynamics of the dinoflagellates, in situ nutrient addition bioassays were conducted to determine which nutrients regulate the phytoplankton community, which includes the bioluminescent dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense. Maternal and child undernutrition contributes to more than one-third of child deaths. Global Health Partnerships (GHP) have emerged as a response to undernutrition and other pressing health problems. GHPs promote joint decision-making among donors, multilateral agencies, and country partners. Despite their positive impact on health problems, GHPs have generated unintended negative effects on country partners. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers to participation in the Active 6 After-School Physical Activity (A6) program in Missoula, MT. Barriers were explored by identifying factors that influence participation in after-school programs. Those barriers identified in the literature were compared with current needs and existing resources of the target population. To evaluate the barriers to the A6 program, primary qualitative data was collected from two sets of three focus groups; one high socio-economic status (SES) and one low. Hypertension is one of the major health problems worldwide. Bioactive peptides that inhibit angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) in the blood pressure regulation system (renin-angiotensin system) can contribute to the prevention and treatment of hypertension. Mushroom species studied are high in protein content, which makes them potentially a good source of antihypertensive peptides. Among the nine edible mushrooms evaluated, protein extracts from Pleurotus cystidiosus (E1Pc and E5Pc) and Agaricus bisporus (E1Ab and E3Ab) exhibited high levels of ACE inhibitory activity. The objective of this study was to develop a suitable protocol for the collection and transfer of goat embryos as well as subsequently to produce goat kids through embryo transfer. Enzymatic assisted aqueous oil extraction (EAAOE) of Jatropha curcas was investigated in this research. The presence of Alcalase® 2.4 L and Celluclast® 1.5 L facilitates the recovery of the oil up to 58%. Parameters involved in EAAOE such as selection and concentration of enzymes, ratio of Jatropha curcas seeds: water (mass/volume), pH, temperature, duration of incubation time, effect of ultrasonication, and oil recovery from oil-water mixture were optimised. The highest oil recovery (58%, m/m) was obtained with 6 mL/1g water/oil, 6% (m/m) enzyme, temperature at 50°C, seed particle size less than 1 mm, pH 5.0 and pH 8.0 for Celluclast® …

Three species of selected microalgae isolated from Tasik Taman Jaya, Oscillatoria limnosa, Scenedesmus quadricauda and Pediastrum duplex, were cultured in Chu no. 10 defined medium. After the microalgae reached their optimum growth they were grown in wastewater to observe their capability to remove inorganic nutrients in wastewater. The microalgae showed steady increase in cell density for the duration of laboratory observation of eighteen days. As the cell density of the microalgae increased, both nitrate and phosphate concentration in wastewater decreased. Tacca integrifolia Ker-Gawl is belongs to the family of Taccaceae and locally know as “Belimbing Tanah”. It has been used traditionally for the treatment of hypertension, hemorrhoids, heart failure and kidney disease. The thin layer chromatography (TLC) of hexane, petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and water extract of leaves and rhizome showed the presence of phenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, essential oil and alkaloid compounds. Microorganisms have many properties include the ability to degrade waste products. In this study Haemolysis was used as an initial selection criterion for the primary isolation of surfactant-producing bacteria. Only β and γ Haemolytic activity were detected in this study which as the presence of a definite clear zone around a colony. From this study, Out of 139 (49 %) hemolytic colonies were observed in this study had shown strong haemolytic activity. The Gram stain results had showed: cocci and bacilli shapes. Antioxidant properties of the crude extracts were determined using DPPH radical scavenging assay and total phenolic content. Β-sitosterol and octyl gallate compounds were isolated from J. sambac and H. Colorata petroleum ether crude extracts by CC, TLC and HPLC and were evaluated for their gastroprotective activities.Macroscopic finding showed that H.colorata and J.sambac significantly accelerated wound healing compared to vehicle. The focus of this study is the development and validation of headspace solid phase microextraction and chromatographic techniques for the analysis of pesticide residues in fruit and vegetable samples. The developed method is based on the comparison of the optimized HS-SPME parameters using univariate and multivariate experimental designs. Veitchia merrillii (Arecaceae family) is commonly known as the "Christmas Palm" because its fruits become bright scarlet and tend to be that color in winter. A study was conducted to evaluate Veitchia merrillii fruits for the presence of total phenolic and flavonoid contents and determine antioxidant activity as well as cytotoxicity effects of extracts with solvents methanol, ethyl acetate and water. Further more, qualitative and quantitative composition of phenolics and flavonoid compounds in all extracts were also analyzed using RP-HPLC. Kalanchoe pinnata is an important plant which has many traditional medicinal uses. In this work, hydroxyproline was extracted from Kalanchoe pinnata. Determination of hydroxyproline in this plant was done using HPLC. Hydroxyproline is one of the element for the formation of collagen. There are three solvent composition used for extraction; 100% of water, 100% of ethanol and 50% of ethanol. It was found that combination of two solvent, ethanol and water can optimize the extraction as when comparing the concentration of hydroxyproline detected in the same extraction time, this system showed the highest concentration of hydroxyproline detected.
