School of Architecture - All Scholarship

Chapter three of Building Culture, “The New Woman’s Home. Kitchens, Laundry, Furnishings,” discusses household culture and modernization. It begins with the Frankfurt Kitchen and its designer, Grete Lihotzky, and continues with a discussion of electricity and the architect Adolf Meyer, and its expansion with the example of the electric laundries in the Frankfurt settlements. The next segment is a discussion of new furniture design, small, inexpensive furniture that was an essential partner to contemporary small house design and was avidly researched in the Frankfurt offices. Designers here include Kramer, Cetto and Schuster.

Food For Thought: The Effects Of Menu Descriptions And Plating Aesthetics On Consumer Ratings And Expectations, Nicole Noujaim Jan 2013

Food For Thought: The Effects Of Menu Descriptions And Plating Aesthetics On Consumer Ratings And Expectations, Nicole Noujaim

Theses & ETDs

Many factors affect consumer food preferences and ratings, including how the food item is described and presented pre-consumption. Previous research has also demonstrated that perceptions of liking are created before a food item is even tasted, and these expectations can change over the course of a meal. The current study examined how exposure to different menu descriptions (descriptive vs. plain) and different plating aesthetics (refined vs. crude) influenced consumer ratings and satisfaction. College students were given questionnaires to fill out after menu exposure, after plating exposure, and then post-consumption. Results confirmed previous findings in that the descriptive menu was better …

The RNA transcriptome varies in response to cellular differentiation as well as environmental factors, and can be characterized by the diversity and abundance of transcript isoforms. Differential transcription analysis, the detection of differences between the transcriptomes of different cells, may improve understanding of cell differentiation and development and enable the identification of biomarkers that classify disease types. The availability of high-throughput short-read RNA sequencing technologies provides in-depth sampling of the transcriptome, making it possible to accurately detect the differences between transcriptomes. In this article, we present a new method for the detection and visualization of differential transcription. Our approach does …

Getting To The Other Side: An Exploration Of The Head And Neck Cancer Treatment Experience, Heather M. Wallace

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

Diagnosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) presents a multifarious problem. Late stage diagnosis, uncertainty regarding appropriate clinical treatment, as well as the high potential for disfigurement and functional loss resulting in diminished quality of life, contributes to anxiety, stress, fear, and uncertainty throughout the cancer treatment experience. This qualitative study sought to explore the cancer treatment experience of adults with newly diagnosed HNSCC, including laryngeal, esophageal, and oral cancers. Study participants were recruited from the University of Kentucky Ear Nose and Throat Clinic in Lexington KY. Participants agreed to be interviewed after receipt of their cancer diagnosis …

Apis mellifera, more commonly known as the honeybee, plays a pivotal role in the ecosystem and in the survival of the planet. Many do not understand, nor realize, that the honeybee offers a wide array of products and services besides sweet honey. Honeybees have become endangered at a time when their presence is vital and evidence indicates that they can be the means to a more sustainable future for our planet. Particularly focused on in this research are the ideas of honeybees’ essential presence in medical advances, their participation in global economics, and their involvement in the development of …

Complication Advice And Institutional Delivery In Asia, Victoria Costales

Public Health Theses

Strategies targeted at decreasing delays in care-seeking behavior and increasing use of skilled birth attendance and health care facility delivery help save maternal and neonatal lives. Counseling women on the danger signs of pregnancy during antenatal care (ANC) visits is one such strategy. This study aimed to examine the effect of pregnancy complication advice on the likelihood of institutional delivery as well as determine the factors that predict higher likelihood of advice receipt. Information from 74,863 mothers who received at least one ANC visit from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys of 9 South and Southeast Asian countries were …

Health Survey Of Households Near Shale Gas Extraction Sites, Ilya B. Slizovskiy Jan 2013

Health Survey Of Households Near Shale Gas Extraction Sites, Ilya B. Slizovskiy

Public Health Theses

Abstract-- The Marcellus formation supports an advanced rate of extraction of shale-based natural gas, particularly as a result of the rapid development of directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies. The confluence of these trends has spurred public concern about potential health impacts on residents that live in proximity to the putative environmental exposures related to the extraction activities, in largely rural communities of the Marcellus region.

A cross-sectional survey of 492 persons and 580 companion / backyard animals from 180 randomly selected households in an area of active unconventional natural gas drilling was conducted. Cluster analyses were performed to identify …

Effect Of Beef Heifer Development System On Adg, Reproduction, And Feed Efficiency During First Pregnancy, Adam F. Summers, T. L. Meyer, Stetson P. Weber Weber, Rick N. Funston

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

This study evaluated the effect of post-weaning development system on heifer ADG, reproductive performance, and subsequent feed efficiency as a pregnant heifer. Heifers were developed on dormant pasture and grazed corn residue or dormant pasture and placed in a drylot. The following winter, a subset of pregnant heifers were placed in a Calan Broadbent individual feeding system during late gestation. Drylot-developed heifers had greater BW from pre-breeding through pregnancy diagnosis and greater overall ADG during development. However, there was no difference in reproductive performance. Pre-calving BW, ADG, and G:F tended to be greater for drylot heifers. Heifers developed on corn …

Effects Of Corn Hybrid, Plant Density, And Harvest Time On Yield And Quality Of Corn Plants, Dirk B. Burken, Jana L. Harding, Adam L. Mcgee Gee, Thomas C. Hoegemeyer, Terry Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson Jan 2013

Effects Of Corn Hybrid, Plant Density, And Harvest Time On Yield And Quality Of Corn Plants, Dirk B. Burken, Jana L. Harding, Adam L. Mcgee Gee, Thomas C. Hoegemeyer, Terry Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Corn plants were collected to determine the effects of hybrid and season length, plant density, and harvest timing on grain and whole corn plant DM yield and nutritive value. Although whole corn plant DM yield decreased with delayed harvest timing, whole corn plant TDN increased linearly due to increasinggrain concentration. Increasing plant density improved yields of grain and whole corn plant DM. This experiment suggests that hybrid and season length selection, planting density, and harvest timing affect whole corn plant DM yield and quality characteristics.

Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at University of Nebraska–Lincoln is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc.) of beef production. Obviously, the researcher cannot apply treatments to every member of a population; therefore, he/she must sample the population. The use of statistics allows the researcher and readers of the Nebraska Beef Report the opportunity to evaluate separation of random (chance) occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment. Following is a brief description of the majorstatistics used in the beef report. For a more detailed description …

Use Of Patch Selection Models As A Decision Support Tool To Evaluate Mitigation Strategies Of Human–Wildlife Conflict, Sharon Baruch-Mordo, Colleen T. Webb, Stewart W. Breck, Kenneth R. Wilson Jan 2013

Use Of Patch Selection Models As A Decision Support Tool To Evaluate Mitigation Strategies Of Human–Wildlife Conflict, Sharon Baruch-Mordo, Colleen T. Webb, Stewart W. Breck, Kenneth R. Wilson

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Human-dominated landscapes offer spatially concentrated and reliable food resources that attract wildlife and lead to human–wildlife conflicts. Conflict management is often directed at humans (e.g., education) to reduce attractants, or foraging benefits to wildlife, or at wildlife (e.g., hazing) to increase foraging costs; but strategies can be expensive and ineffective. Because a key driver of conflict is the pursuit of food by wildlife, we used patch selection models, a dynamic, state-dependent modeling approach based on foraging theory, to assess how benefit reduction and cost increase resulting from conflict mitigation affect wildlife foraging decisions. We applied the patch selection models to …

The Effect Of Maternal Beliefs And Behavior On The Body Weight Status Of Preschool-Aged Children, Nicole Lynn Boucher Jan 2013

The Effect Of Maternal Beliefs And Behavior On The Body Weight Status Of Preschool-Aged Children, Nicole Lynn Boucher

Wayne State University Dissertations

Early onset pediatric obesity has become a major health concern in the United States. Pediatric obesity can lead to childhood hypertension, type II diabetes, and orthopedic problems. Currently, in the United States one in seven low-income preschools are overweight or obese. One of the key contributing factors to early onset childhood obesity is how children are socialized to the eating and mealtime environment. Maternal feeding styles play an integral role in how children are socialized to the eating and mealtime environment.

The purpose of the this study was to determine the extent to which maternal beliefs and behavior regarding the …

Courts Of Appeal And Colonialism In The British Caribbean: A Case For The Caribbean Court Of Justice, Ezekiel Rediker Jan 2013

Courts Of Appeal And Colonialism In The British Caribbean: A Case For The Caribbean Court Of Justice, Ezekiel Rediker

Michigan Journal of International Law

In recent years, a public debate on law and the colonial legacy has engaged people of all walks of life in the English Speaking Caribbean (ESC), from judges and politicians to young people in the streets. Throughout the ESC, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC)—based in London and composed of British jurists—has been the highest court of appeal since the colonial era. In the past decade, however, Caribbean governments have sought greater control over their legal systems. In 2005, they created the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) to supplant the British Privy Council as the Supreme Court for …
