Splicing Variants Of The Porcine Betaine–Homocysteine S-Methyltransferase Gene: Implications For Mammalian Metabolism, Radhika Ganu, Timothy Garrow, Markos Koutmos, Laurie Rund, Lawrence B. Schook

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Betaine–homocysteine S-methyltransferase (BHMT) activity is only detected in the liver of rodents, but in both the liver and kidney cortex of humans and pigs; therefore, the pig was chosen as a model to define the spatial and temporal expression of BHMT during development. During fetal development, a total of ten splice variants of bhmt were expressed at varying levels across a wide range of porcine tissues. Two variants contained an identical ORF that encoded a C-terminal truncated form of BHMT (tBHMT). The bhmt transcripts were expressed at significant levels in the liver and kidney from day 45 of gestation …

Pre-Meal Affective State And Laboratory Test Meal Intake In Adolescent Girls With Loss Of Control Eating, Lisa Ranzenhofer, Louise Hannallah, Sara E. Field, Lauren Shomaker, Mark Stephens, Tracy Sbrocco, Merel Kozlosky, James Reynolds, Jack A. Yanovski, Marian Tanofsky-Kraff Jan 2013

Pre-Meal Affective State And Laboratory Test Meal Intake In Adolescent Girls With Loss Of Control Eating, Lisa Ranzenhofer, Louise Hannallah, Sara E. Field, Lauren Shomaker, Mark Stephens, Tracy Sbrocco, Merel Kozlosky, James Reynolds, Jack A. Yanovski, Marian Tanofsky-Kraff

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Loss of control eating confers risk for excess weight gain and exacerbated disordered eating. Affect theory proposes that loss of control eating is used to cope with negative mood states. Self-report data suggest that negative affect may contribute to the etiology of loss of control eating, but this theory has not been well-tested using laboratory paradigms. We examined associations between pre-meal affective states and intake during a laboratory test meal. One-hundred and ten adolescent girls with reported loss of control eating whose body mass index fell between the 75th and 97th percentile for age and sex completed state mood ratings …

Conservation And Ecology Of Marine Forage Fishes— Proceedings Of A Research Symposium, September 2012, Theresa Liedtke, Caroline Gibson, Dayv Lowry, Duane Fagergren

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Locally and globally, there is growing recognition of the critical roles that herring, smelt, sand lance, eulachon, and other forage fishes play in marine ecosystems. Scientific and resource management entities throughout the Salish Sea, agree that extensive information gaps exist, both in basic biological knowledge and parameters critical to fishery management. Communication and collaboration among researchers also is inadequate.

Building on the interest and enthusiasm generated by recent forage fish workshops and symposia around the region, the 2012 Research Symposium on the Conservation and Ecology of Marine Forage Fishes was designed to elucidate practical recommendations for science and policy needs …

A Prospective Study Of Physical Fitness, Obesity, And The Subsequent Risk Of Mental Disorders Among Healthy Young Adults In Army Training, Marlene E. Gubata, Nadia Urban, David N. Cowan, David W. Niebuhr

United States Army: Publications

Objective: Mental health disorders contribute substantially to medical and occupational morbidity. The role of fitness and physical activity in the prevention of mental health disorders is not well established, but epidemiologic data suggest that physical activity can protect against anxiety and depression.

Method: The analyses presented in this report, from a prospective cohort study, evaluate the association between fitness (as measured by a 5-minute step test), and being overweight (defined as exceeding weight and body fat allowances) at military entrance, with subsequent onset of mental disorder diagnosis in the first year of service. The association between risk factors …

United States Army: Publications

BACKGROUND: Faceflies, Musca autumnalis DeGeer (Diptera: Muscidae),and houseflies, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), have a significant impact on livestock and dairy production throughout North America. Pyrethroid insecticide efficacy can be affected by exposure to direct sunlight, and the rate of photodegradation is substrate and formulation dependent. Insecticidetreated netting (ITN) is finding new applications in crop and livestock production systems. A baseline study using long-duration no-choice assays has been carried out to gauge the effectiveness of ITN treated with β-cyfluthrin, λ-cyhalothrin and bifenthrin on face flies and houseflies.

RESULTS: After 12 weeks in direct sunlight, ITN treated with β-cyfluthrin was still …

Klotz, Robyn L. Stevens, Rebecca E. Cahoon, Tara J. Nazarenus, Suzette L. Pereira, Edgar B. Cahoon

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) catalyses the last step in acyl-CoA-dependent triacylglycerol (TAG) biosynthesis and is an important determinant of cellular oil content and quality. In this study, a gene, designated TaDGAT2, encoding a type 2 DGAT (DGAT2)-related enzyme was identified from the oleaginous marine protist Thraustochytrium aureum. The deduced TaDGAT2 sequence contains a ~460 amino acid domain most closely related to DGAT2s from Dictyostelium sp. (45–50% identity). Recombinant TaDGAT2 restored TAG biosynthesis to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae H1246 TAG-deficient mutant, and microsomes from the complemented mutant displayed DGAT activity with C16 and C18 saturated and unsaturated fatty acyl-CoA and diacylglycerol …

Wildlife In Airport Environments: Chapter 10 Managing Turfgrass To Reduce Wildlife Hazards At Airports, Brian E. Washburn, Thomas W. Seamans Jan 2013

Wildlife In Airport Environments: Chapter 10 Managing Turfgrass To Reduce Wildlife Hazards At Airports, Brian E. Washburn, Thomas W. Seamans

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Multiple factors-including safety regulations, economic considerations, location, and attractiveness to wildlife recognized as hazardous to aviation- influence the choice of land cover at airports. The principal land covet at airports within North America has historically been turfgrass, usually coolseason perennial grass species native to Europe. However, recent research has determined that, from a wildlife perspective, not all turf grasses are alike. Some grasses are more palatable to herbivorous hazardous wildlife (e.g., Canada geese [Branta canadensis]) than others, and thus are more likely to increase the potential for wildlife-aircraft collisions when planted near critical airport operating areas. How turfgrasses are managed …

Effects Of Stand-Replacing Wildfire On Ecosystem Carbon Pools In Lake States Jack Pine Forests, David E. Rothstein, John Bradford, Richard Corner, Katherine Chumack, Michael Cook, Ehsan Razavy-Toosi Jan 2013

Effects Of Stand-Replacing Wildfire On Ecosystem Carbon Pools In Lake States Jack Pine Forests, David E. Rothstein, John Bradford, Richard Corner, Katherine Chumack, Michael Cook, Ehsan Razavy-Toosi

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

A key barrier to resolving uncertainty about the effects of fire on ecosystem C balance is the fact that fire effects on ecosystem C budgets are manifested over decadal time scales, meaning that we are largely forced to draw inferences using space-for-time substitution, or chronosequence, studies. Whereas chronosequences allow us to study processes occurring over long time scales, they are almost never re-sampled to verify the temporal trajectory of response variables, raising questions about the validity of chronosequence estimates of post-fire C dynamics. We re-sampled a well-studied fire chronosequence of jack pine (Pinus banksiana) forests in Michigan, providing a unique …

Field Guide For Nebraska Invasive Plants (Fg-27)

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

What are Invasive Species: Invasive species are non-native organisms introduced into new ecosystem whose introduction and ability to spread causes environmental or economic harm, or harm to human health. Once established, these species cause irreparable harm, including: introducing disease; competing with native specics; changing the physical characteristics of natural areas; and negatively impacting local and national economies.

Invasive Species Regulations: This guide identifies federal and state-listed noxious weeds. Federal noxious weeds are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture; State noxious weeds are regulated by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Noxious Weed Program. Aquatic invasive …

The Teacher-Student Writing Conference Reimaged: Entangled Becoming-Writingconferencing, Donna Kalmbach Phillips, Mindy Legard Larson Jan 2013

The Teacher-Student Writing Conference Reimaged: Entangled Becoming-Writingconferencing, Donna Kalmbach Phillips, Mindy Legard Larson

Faculty Publications

This analysis is experimental: we attempt to read data with the work of Karen Barad and in doing so ‘see’ teacher-student writing conferences (a common pedagogy of US elementary school writing) as intra-activity. Data were gathered during teacher-student writing conferences in a grade five US classroom over a six week period. One conference between a researcher and a male Latino student, a Student of Labels, is diffracted. Reading and writing and thinking with Barad disrupts our habitual ways of privileging language as representational. Rather, we consider the material-discursive practices of schooling that produce what comes to matter, leading …

The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The number of Asian American families is on the rise. Asian American families are a diverse group. This chapter focuses on Asian American families that migrated to the United States in the last three decades. This chapter challenges the media’s depiction of them as a Model Minority. Because of this stereotype, many challenges that this group encounters may not gain adequate attention. The chapter examines their strengths and resiliency, along with the ecology of stress that influences family dynamics.

Nigella Sativa And Its Protective Role In Oxidative Stress And Hypertension, Xin-Fang Leong, Mohd Rais Mustafa, K. Jaarin Jan 2013

Nigella Sativa And Its Protective Role In Oxidative Stress And Hypertension, Xin-Fang Leong, Mohd Rais Mustafa, K. Jaarin

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Hypertension increases the risk for a variety of cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and peripheral vascular disease. The increase in oxidative stress has been associated with the pathogenesis of hypertension. Increase of blood pressure is due to an imbalance between antioxidants defence mechanisms and free radical productions. Excessive production of reactive oxygen species reduces nitric oxide bioavailability leading to an endothelial dysfunction and a subsequent increase in total peripheral resistance. Hypertension can cause few symptoms until it reaches the advanced stage and poses serious health problems with lifelong consequences. Hypertensive patients are required to take drugs …

Differential Expressions Of Nodal-Signal Transducers And Global Transcriptional Repression Commit Vegetal Cells In Eleutherodactylus Coqui To Form Nutritional Endoderm, Suman Chatterjee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The vegetal core cells of a Xenopus laevis embryo commit to mesendoderm via the Nodal-signaling pathway. In Eleutherodactylus coqui, a direct developing frog, mesendoderm is specified at the marginal zone of the early gastrulae and vegetal core cells transform into nutritional endoderm. It is a novel tissue consisting of transient, yolk rich cells that provide nutrition, but do not differentiate into adult tissues. We hypothesized that a disruption of Nodal-signaling is responsible for committing vegetal core cells to nutritional endoderm. I report a dual regulation involved in the generation of nutritional endoderm. First, differential expression of Nodal-signaling components like Smad2 …
