Design And Use Of An Adjustable Clearance Flailing Knife Biomass Shredder To Mechanically Increase Particle Surface Area, Shawn Gregory Ehlers Jan 2013

Design And Use Of An Adjustable Clearance Flailing Knife Biomass Shredder To Mechanically Increase Particle Surface Area, Shawn Gregory Ehlers

Open Access Theses

A flailing knife shredder was designed and tested as an alternative to a hammermill for processing biomass. The machine was comprised of two cylinders with four rungs, each with five free-swinging blades. Each of the two cylinders had adjustable clearance hoods and variable speed drives. Energy usage, output characteristics and device capacities were compared with corn stover processed at moisture contents (MC) of 10%, 35% and 50% wet basis (WB). The hammermill produced a more uniform particle size distribution in comparison to the shredder. Accessibility, indicated by conductivity index, to plant constituents, revealed that the method of treatment was not-significant …

Inclusion Of Ethanol Co-Products In Beef Cow Diets: Impact On Cow Performance And Developmental Programming Of The Progeny, Christie N. Shee Jan 2013

Inclusion Of Ethanol Co-Products In Beef Cow Diets: Impact On Cow Performance And Developmental Programming Of The Progeny, Christie N. Shee

Open Access Theses

The main goal for a cow-calf producer is profitability, which requires optimum reproductive performance, while keeping feed costs low and ensuring that nutritional needs are met. Cow herds are grazed on pasture or crop residues, but these may not always meet nutritional requirements. Ethanol co-products such as dried distiller's grains with solubles (DDGS) and condensed distiller's solubles (CDS) may be supplemented to increase the energy and protein concentration of the diet. Recently it has been discovered that maternal diet can have long lasting effects on progeny growth and development. Thus, the effects of feeding the ethanol co-products DDGS and CDS …

The Force Field Of Tourism, Jorge Ridderstaat, Robertico R. Croes, Peter Nijkamp Jan 2013

The Force Field Of Tourism, Jorge Ridderstaat, Robertico R. Croes, Peter Nijkamp

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The literature on tourism development has focused on a one dimensional relationship between tourism development and quality of life. The impact of shock events on the relationship tourism development and quality of life seems ignored. Rather less attention has been paid to the multi-dimensional aspects of the relationship between tourism development and quality of life, and the potential impact of shock events on shaping this relationship. This study proposes a conceptual framework describing a triad of relations between tourism development (TD), quality of life (QoL) and shock events, and advocates that a bilateral relation exists between these three constructs. The …

The primary goal of the human microbiome initiative has been to increase our understanding of the structure and function of our indigenous microbiota and their effects on human health and predisposition to disease. Because of its clinical importance and accessibility for in vivo study, the oral biofilm is one of the best-understood microbial communities associated with the human body. Studies have shown that there is a succession of select microbial interactions that directs the maturation of a defined community structure, generating the formation of dental plaque. Although the initiating factors that lead to disease development are not clearly defined, in …

An Investigation Of The Feasibility And Progress Of The Millennium Development Goals In Swaziland - A Case Study, Andrea Kine

Honors Thesis Collection

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are Swaziland’s time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme income poverty, hunger, disease, and lack of adequate shelter, while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability. The MDGs also promote basic human rights – the rights of each person on the planet to health, education, shelter, and security.[i] The UN Millennium Declaration, also known as the Millennium Development Goals, was adopted at the Millennium Summit in September 2000, and consists of 8 goals to be met by the year 2015.

This thesis, entitled, “An investigation of the feasibility and progress of the Millennium Development …

Determining The Role Of The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway During Limb Regeneration In The Red Flour Beetle, Tribolium Castaneum, Carla Mayela Villarreal Jan 2013

Determining The Role Of The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway During Limb Regeneration In The Red Flour Beetle, Tribolium Castaneum, Carla Mayela Villarreal

Honors Thesis Collection

Despite studies performed on many species, including amphibians and insects, the mechanisms regulating limb regeneration remain poorly understood. Hedgehog (Hh) is a major signaling pathway found in most, if not all, animal species, including humans. In vertebrates, Hh signaling has been shown to play key roles during limb regeneration. To determine whether Hedgehog might also play a role during limb regeneration in Tribolium castaneum, Hh signaling was silenced through RNA interference. In normal development, silencing of Hh signaling resulted in alteration of limb morphology. Disruption of Hh signaling during regeneration led to the impairment of blastema growth and subsequent …

Women In Prison In Argentina: Causes, Conditions, And Consequences, University Of Chicago Law School - Global Human Rights Clinic, Defensoría General De La Nación Argentina, Cornell Law School - International Human Rights Clinic, Cornell Law School - Avon Global Center For Women And Justice

Global Human Rights Clinic

In many countries around the world, including Argentina, the number of women who are deprived of their liberty has risen over time and has increased disproportionately in comparison to male prisoners. In Argentina, the number of female prisoners within the federal system increased 193%, while the male population rose 111% from 1990 to 2012. Nonetheless, little research has been done to understand why there has been such a dramatic increase in women’s incarceration. At the same time, international and domestic laws governing prisons and prison policies and practices have traditionally been designed for men. In 2010, however, the United Nations …

The Effects Of Exercise Participation On Cognition In Adults, Marisa L. Hastie Jan 2013

The Effects Of Exercise Participation On Cognition In Adults, Marisa L. Hastie

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Current research supports that regular participation in exercise not only benefits physical fitness parameters, but also that there are multiple beneficial effects on cognition and brain health. Few studies have been conducted on adults and many lack the specifics of the exercise prescription needed in order to elicit improvements in cognition. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the different dimensions of physical fitness and cognitive improvements. Thirty-seven adults enrolled at a northwest community college were recruited for this study. Participants were divided amongst three exercise treatment groups: cardiovascular training (CVT), strength training (ST), and mixed …

The State Of The Science Of Health And Wellness For Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Lynda Lahti Anderson, Kathy Humphries, Suzanne Mcdermott, Beth Marks, Jasmina Sisirak, Sheryl Larson

Rural Institute Journal Articles

Historically, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have experienced health disparities related to several factors including: a lack of access to high quality medical care, inadequate preparation of health care providers to meet their needs, the social determinants of health (e.g., poverty, race and gender), and the failure to include people with IDD in public health efforts and other prevention activities. Over the past decade, a greater effort has been made to both identify and begin to address myriad health disparities experienced by people with IDD through a variety of activities including programs that address health lifestyles and greater …

Creating A Culture Of Wellness: A Baseline Multidimensional Analysis Of Wellness At A Small Private Historically Black College And University, Victor Owen Romano Jan 2013

Creating A Culture Of Wellness: A Baseline Multidimensional Analysis Of Wellness At A Small Private Historically Black College And University, Victor Owen Romano

Education Dissertations and Projects

Wellness is something that needs to be taught, encouraged, and valued within a community for it to be obtainable. Preventable health disparities attributed to lack of physical activity continue to be a burden in predominantly African-American communities. Preventative wellness programming has been shown to be successful for students, as well as employees, as long as it is culturally relevant, especially when working within a predominantly African-American population. The purpose of this study was to establish a baseline multidimensional analysis of wellness in correspondence with the opening of a new wellness center.

Data were gathered from employees and students from a …

Air Force Demographics Of Sexually Transmitted Infections 2007 To 2012, Daniel R. Shea Jan 2013

Air Force Demographics Of Sexually Transmitted Infections 2007 To 2012, Daniel R. Shea

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

In the United States there is a significant gap between Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) rates of Caucasians and African Americans. This disparity is attributed to many causes including access to health care, socioeconomic status, and social dynamics. The objective of this research is to describe the racial demographics of STI infections in the Air Force and explore possible disparities based on military pay grades. The military enforces many of the recommendations on how to limit STI health disparities by offering easy access to free health care and mandatory regular checkups. Despite these policies, the data reveals significant disparities based on …

The Expanding Genomic Landscape Of Autism: Discovering The 'Forest' Beyond The 'Trees', Valerie Wailin Hu Jan 2013

The Expanding Genomic Landscape Of Autism: Discovering The 'Forest' Beyond The 'Trees', Valerie Wailin Hu

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by significant deficits in reciprocal social interactions, impaired communication, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Because ASDs are among the most heritable of neuropsychiatric disorders, much of autism research has focused on the search for genetic variants in protein-coding genes (i.e., the "trees"). However, no single gene can account for more than 1% of the cases of ASD. Yet, genome-wide association studies have often identified statistically significant associations of genetic variations in regions of DNA that do not code for proteins (i.e., intergenic regions). There is increasing evidence that such noncoding regions are actively …

Affixing The Service Mark: Reconsidering The Rise Of An Oxymoron, Peter J. Karol Jan 2013

Affixing The Service Mark: Reconsidering The Rise Of An Oxymoron, Peter J. Karol

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the deep and to date unacknowledged contradictions underlying service marks (trademarks used in connection with services rather than goods). Namely, the Lanham Act statutorily mandates treating trademarks the “same” as service marks; yet it simultaneously loosens requirements for proving service mark “use” by allowing mere advertising to substantiate service mark rights. This shortcut is not permitted with trademarks as such. As a result of this imbalance, sophisticated trademark practitioners may now quickly secure vast service mark rights for clients in ways not available for trademarks.

To better understand current service mark practice, and the above contradictions, the …

Genetic And Physiological Responses Of Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis To Hydrogen Peroxide Stress, T. S. Oberg, Robert E. Ward, J. L. Steele, Jeff Broadbent Jan 2013

Genetic And Physiological Responses Of Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis To Hydrogen Peroxide Stress, T. S. Oberg, Robert E. Ward, J. L. Steele, Jeff Broadbent

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Consumer interest in probiotic bifidobacteria is increasing, but industry efforts to secure high cell viability in foods is determined by these anaerobes’ sensitivity to oxidative stress. To address this limitation, we investigated genetic and physiological responses of two fully sequenced Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis strains, BL-04 and DSM 10140, to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) stress. Although the genome sequences for these strains are highly clonal, prior work showed they differ in both intrinsic and inducible H2O2 resistance. Transcriptome analysis of early stationary phase cells exposed to a sub-lethal H2O2 concentration detected …
