Poet Laureate from 1997-2000, has won countless awards, and has been nominated for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He's taught on both coasts and in Chicago, and was called "the last of the 'civic' or public poets" by the Poetry Foundation. Low birthweight increases the risk of infant mortality, morbidity and poor development. Maternal nutrition and stress influence birth size, but their combined effect is not known. We hypothesised that an early-invitation time to start a prenatal food supplementation programme could reduce the negative influence of prenatal maternal stress on birth size, and that effect would differ by infant sex. A cohort of 1041 pregnant women, who had delivered an infant, June 2003–March 2004, was sampled from among 3267 in the randomised controlled trial, Maternal Infant Nutritional Interventions Matlab, conducted in Matlab, Bangladesh. At 8 weeks gestation, women were randomly assigned an …

Early Prediction Of Trauma Patient Discharge Disposition, Ronald Beaulieu, Priti Parikh, Akpofure Peter Ekeh, Ronald J. Markert, Mary C. Mccarthy
Early Prediction Of Trauma Patient Discharge Disposition, Ronald Beaulieu, Priti Parikh, Akpofure Peter Ekeh, Ronald J. Markert, Mary C. Mccarthy
Department of Surgery Faculty Publications
Objective: Do pre-injury and early hospital admission characteristics help predict patient discharge disposition? Background: Total one-year treatment cost of adult major trauma in the United States is estimated at $30 billion annually, with 58% of the cost due to the index hospitalization. Increased length of stay (LOS) increases morbidity and delays rehabilitation. Prediction of discharge to a location other than home through univariate risk factor methodology and development of a multivariable binary logistic regression model allows early discharge planning. Methods: A one-year Level 1 trauma center registry dataset was used to develop a predictive model of discharge disposition using 2836 …

A fast growing economy, a rising urban middle class, a predominantly young educated population and the changes in climatic conditions will have serious repercussions on food production, food security, nutritional status and cropping pattern in the not so distant future.
Although economic growth rates have slowed down in the last five years, Pakistan’s long term annual growth of per capita income has been around 2.5 percent. It is estimated that in real terms, per capita income had quadrupled four times by 2003. If the growth rate reverts to the historical mean, an average Pakistani will be earning eight times higher …
The Impacts Of Inclusive Learning On Special Needs Students, Traditional Students And Faculty In The Agricultural Education Classroom, Lynnetta J. Wilson
The Impacts Of Inclusive Learning On Special Needs Students, Traditional Students And Faculty In The Agricultural Education Classroom, Lynnetta J. Wilson
Research Papers
Agricultural Education prepares students for a wide range of opportunities in continuing education and employment. By allowing students of all academic and economic backgrounds to be involved in the agricultural classroom, students are capable of having an appreciation for agriculture and the environment. The classroom not only helps students develop essential career preparation skills but also is capable of providing personal growth that will benefit students now and in the future. By including all students in the agriculture classroom, all students are impacted in various ways. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact on students and faculty …

The Association Of Caregivers' Educational Level And Their Knowledge Of Children's Nutrition And Exercise Behavior, Hauwa Okorie, Bersabeh Medmim, Nazrat Mirza
GW Research Days 2013
BACKGROUND:
Parents play an instrumental role in modeling their children's health behaviors and exposing them to new foods, and engaging them in physical activities.
OBJECTIVE:
To assess the association of parents' educational level on their nutritional and physical activity knowledge.
METHODS:
This is a cross-sectional study of 72 participants from a nutrition and wellness program targeting parents of African American preschoolers. Socio-demographic, child's nutritional and physical exercise habit survey and anthropometric data were collected from all participants at baseline.

Justification Of Intimate Partner Violence In Egypt, Amira A. Roess, Esther L. Aranda
GW Research Days 2013
Background: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is an important problem in developing countries and associated with poor reproductive health outcomes.
Objectives: To describe trends and justification of IPV in Egypt.
Methods: We used the 2008 Egypt Demographic Health Surveys (EDHS). Information on IPV was drawn from 16,527 women in 2008. We performed bivariate analyses to examine trends in and risk factors for justification of IPV.
Results: 39.5% of respondents reported that IPV is justifiable. Logistic regression suggests that age, education, wealth and female autonomy are associated with respondents not justifying IPV. In contrast respondents who supported the continuation of female circumcision …

GW Research Days 2013
BACKGROUND
Human Hookworm Infection, a neglected tropical disease infects more than 600 million people around the world. Hookworms ingest hemoglobin containing erythrocytes and Necator americanus Aspartic Protease-1 wild type (Na-APR-1wt) a hemoglobinase cleaves hemoglobin to form Heme and Globin. Globin is further digested by other gut enzymes and the nutritional products are absorbed by the hookworm’s gut wall. Also, Heme which is toxic to hookworm is detoxified by the Necator americanus Glutathione Transferase-1 (Na-GST-1); a detoxification enzyme secreted by the gut of the hookworm. Necator americanus Aspartic Protease-1 M74 (Na-APR-1 M74) is a new …
