Comparative Analysis Of Fungal Genomes Reveals Different Plant Cell Wall Degrading Capacity In Fungi, Zhongtao Zhao, Huiquan Liu, Chenfang Wang, Jin-Rong Xu

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

EDITOR'S NOTE

Readers are alerted that there is currently a discussion regarding the use of some of the unpublished genomic data presented in this manuscript. Appropriate editorial action will be taken once this matter is resolved.

Background

Fungi produce a variety of carbohydrate activity enzymes (CAZymes) for the degradation of plant polysaccharide materials to facilitate infection and/or gain nutrition. Identifying and comparing CAZymes from fungi with different nutritional modes or infection mechanisms may provide information for better understanding of their life styles and infection models. To date, over hundreds of fungal genomes are publicly available. However, a systematic comparative analysis …

Malnutrition And Diseases Affecting The Children Of Uganda, Crystal Brooke Baldwin Apr 2013

Malnutrition And Diseases Affecting The Children Of Uganda, Crystal Brooke Baldwin

Senior Honors Theses

Every day there are children in underdeveloped countries, such as Uganda, who are struggling to survive on minimal food, money, and other resources. These children do not have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a normal childhood because their main focus is on survival. Many of these children will die because of preventable disease and starvation that have resulted from the endless cycle of poverty and lack of education. Those who are lucky enough to survive must fight a daily battle to find the nutrients they need and to combat the diseases they may acquire. It is heartbreaking to …

The Effect Of Contextual Variables On Intraspecific Interactions And Space-Use In Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Christian Thomas Vlautin Apr 2013

The Effect Of Contextual Variables On Intraspecific Interactions And Space-Use In Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Christian Thomas Vlautin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The outcomes of social interactions may depend on the circumstances of the encounter. Using a variety of social and environmental cues, I tested the hypothesis that the responses of meadow voles to conspecifics would be affected by the context in which that encounter occurred. Chapter two describes experiments showing that unlike long-photoperiod (LP) voles, which prefer the top-scent donor to the bottom-scent donor of an over-mark, only some short-photoperiod (SP) males showed such preferences, and no SP females preferred the top-scent donor to the bottom-scent donor of an over-mark. Chapter three details experiments demonstrating that periods of food deprivation did …

Maternal Depression In A Racially And Socioeconomically Diverse Cohort: Influences On Infant Feeding Practices., Lauren M. Sims Apr 2013

Maternal Depression In A Racially And Socioeconomically Diverse Cohort: Influences On Infant Feeding Practices., Lauren M. Sims

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Feeding practices during infancy and early childhood have lifelong effects on weight and relationships with food. With the growing prevalence of obesity in adults and children, early feeding practices are being examined more carefully as points in which public health interventions may be successful. Experts recommend that feeding practices be responsive in nature. Maternal depression has been shown to have deleterious effects on parenting practices, contributing to their unresponsiveness. As the responsive frameworks for parenting and feeding are similar, we expected to find similar effects of maternal depression on feeding practices. Maternal depression does, in fact, contribute to unresponsive feeding …

Path Analysis Of Psychological Factors Associated With Medication Adherence For Individuals With Chronic Diseases, Brittany Saleese Sansbury Apr 2013

Path Analysis Of Psychological Factors Associated With Medication Adherence For Individuals With Chronic Diseases, Brittany Saleese Sansbury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The 100 million U. S. residents with hypertension or diabetes generally struggle with medication adherence (MA). On average, 65% refer to themselves as nonadherent in some way, complicating attempts to ascertain the benefits of medical care to reduce morbidity and morality. It is important, therefore, to ask why patients are not taking effective medications. In answering this question, there is some evidence that individuals dismiss the long-term benefits of better nutrition or lifestyle choices due to the asymptomatic or silent nature of chronic diseases (Takiya, Peterson, & Finley, 2004). Nonetheless, there has been limited progresss in targetting barriers based on …

Of Mice And Men: A Comparative Study Assessing Behavioral Indicators Of Sugar Addiction In Mice And College Students, Kahlilia Morris Apr 2013

Of Mice And Men: A Comparative Study Assessing Behavioral Indicators Of Sugar Addiction In Mice And College Students, Kahlilia Morris

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

Binge eating is a maladaptive behavior associated with obesity and certain eating disorders. Numerous animal studies have shown that this bingeing behavior shares qualities with those of drug addiction. Furthermore, research in rodents has shown that this addictive behavior is also characterized by the same molecular and physiological characteristics that define drug addiction. The current study purposed to assess whether bingeing on sugar could lead to behavioral indicators of sugar dependence in mice as well as humans. The results show that bingeing on sugar did not increase addictive behavior in either mice or human participants. Instead, addictive behaviors appeared to …

Effects Of Ocean Acidification On The Early Life History Of Two Pelagic Tropical Fish Species, Cobia (Rachycentron Canadum) And Mahi-Mahi (Coryphaena Hippurus), Sean G. T. Bignami Apr 2013

Effects Of Ocean Acidification On The Early Life History Of Two Pelagic Tropical Fish Species, Cobia (Rachycentron Canadum) And Mahi-Mahi (Coryphaena Hippurus), Sean G. T. Bignami

Open Access Dissertations

Ocean acidification is of particular concern for vulnerable larval stages or marine organisms that are critical to population replenishment and connectivity. In fishes, the existing body of ocean acidification research has focused mostly on small demersal species, which may be more resistant to acidification than less well-studied offshore pelagic species. A better understanding of the effects of ocean acidification on these understudied species requires examination of biological factors that influence larval ability to successfully survive, navigate, and recruit to adult populations. This dissertation reports a series of studies researching the impact of ocean acidification on the larval stages of two …

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Posters and Presentations

Backgound: Human Hookworm Infection, a neglected tropical disease infects more than 600 million people around the world. Hookworms ingest hemoglobin containing erythrocytes and Necator americanus Aspartic Protease-1 wild type (Na-APR-1wt) a hemoglobinase cleaves hemoglobin to form Heme and Globin. Globin is further digested by other gut enzymes and the nutritional end products are absorbed by the hookworm’s gut wall. Also, Heme which is toxic to hookworm is detoxified by the Necator americanus Glutathione Transferase-1 (Na-GST-1) a detoxification enzyme secreted by the gut of the hookworm. Necator americanus Aspartic Protease-1 M74 (Na-APR-1 M74) is the …

Validation Of Microwave Heating Instructions For The Destruction Of Salmonella Spp. In Microwaveable Foods, Carol J. Valenzuela

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Microwave heating instructions for three products (chicken nuggets, turkey pot-pies and mashed potato) were developed and validated based on end point temperatures using two microwave ovens (2,459 MHz; 700 W and 1,350 W). Heating instructions for chicken nuggets were validated using different configuration of product placement (edge or center of the carousel) and number of units (4, 6 and 8). Salmonella spp. reductions of 6.56 log CFU/g (700 W) were observed in chicken nuggets heated in groups of 4 and placed at the center of the carousel with 1 min 26 s of heating time with a target end point …

Healthy Skin Is In: Effects Of A Multifaceted Sun Safety Program For Adolescents, Lindsay A. Munden

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Skin cancer is a common, potentially life threatening disease notably on the rise among young Americans. A substantial portion of lifetime exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the greatest modifiable risk factor for skin cancer development, occurs during childhood and adolescence. Schools infrequently integrate sun safety education into the classroom and many lack essential sun safety policies. The purpose of this EBP project was to implement a multifaceted educational intervention providing middle school students with the knowledge behavioral skills needed to minimize the risk of developing skin cancer. The Health Belief Model and ACE Star Model of evidence-based practice guided this …

Complementary And Alternative Medicine: The History, Current Prevalence, And Future Projections, Melissa J. De Nijs Apr 2013

Complementary And Alternative Medicine: The History, Current Prevalence, And Future Projections, Melissa J. De Nijs

Senior Honors Theses

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been used for centuries. Common methods include chiropractic, diet, yoga, and prayer. Though some methods have proven more successful than others, many have insufficient data to support claims of effectiveness.

A survey of medical professionals involving twenty-seven CAM methods was conducted in order to evaluate modern perceptions of complementary and alternative medicine. They were asked their experience with CAM, their personal opinion regarding its effectiveness, and how likely they would be to recommend a CAM treatment to a patient.

It has been hypothesized that more CAM treatments will be utilized in the future. This …

Inclusive Business: Using For-Profit Business Models To Address Global Poverty, Samuel James Conner Apr 2013

Inclusive Business: Using For-Profit Business Models To Address Global Poverty, Samuel James Conner

Senior Honors Theses

Due to the rise of globalization, modernization, and the Internet revolution, awareness of global poverty has expanded, making its eradication a chief goal of the global development community for the twenty-first century. Though corporations are often expected to participate in social and community development initiatives without regard for profits, this paper presents inclusive business as a way for businesses to profitably engage impoverished segments of society. Inclusive businesses seek to expand their consumer bases or strengthen their supply chains by moving into new markets among the poor that have limited access to global markets and remain largely untapped. The research …
