Objectives
A community-based intervention is described that targets oral health self-care practices among Hispanic children in the United States and is being tested in an ongoing trial. Descriptive results of baseline oral health variables are presented.
Methods
As of January 2013, 284 Hispanic children of ages 5–7 enrolled in the Healthy Families Study in Nashville, TN, USA. Families are randomized to one of two culturally appropriate interventions.
Results
At baseline, 69.6 % of children brushed at least twice daily, and 40.6 % brushed before bed daily. One-third of parents did not know if their children’s toothpaste contained fluoride.

Elements Of Living, Dan Steele
Elements Of Living, Dan Steele
Theses & Honors Papers
The purpose of this thesis is the exploration of influential personal events through creative nonfiction which remains thematically centered on the four traditional elements of earth, air, fire, and water. In the four essays serving as my thesis, collectively entitled "Elements of Living," I reflect on personal experiences which have bad significant impact on my life and philosophical outlook, and assign an element to each.
The topics covered in each essay vary, and some take historical information into consideration. Although the history that is covered does serve an important metaphorical purpose in the essays, reading straight historical data can be …

Development Of A Method For The Measurement And Analyses Of The Micro-Scale Mechanical Response Of The Growth Plate With Fluorescent Microscopy, Thien-Chuong Nguyen Phung

The growth plate is a layer of hyaline cartilage between the epiphysis and diaphysis of long bones and is responsible for the longitudinal growth of bone. Like the remodeling of mature bones, bone growth is influenced by its surrounding environment, but the underlying mechanisms of this process are less understood, although there appears to be a link between mechanical loading and bone growth. For example, the Hueter-Volkmann law states that growth rate decreases due to excessive compressive loading. Multiple mechanisms have been proposed to lead to growth retardation in the case of excessive compression such as vascular obstruction, alterations in …
The Effect Of Prenatal Care In Preventing Potentially Avoidable Maternal Complications (Pamcs); An Empirical Investigation With Emphasis On Racial Disparities In Access And Outcome, Riham F. Ishak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissetation is composed of one essay that utilizes the Shelby County Birth Certificate Data for the years 2004-2006 to propose three models that evaluate the effectiveness of prenatal care in preventing Potentially Avoidable Maternal Complications (PAMC) among different ethnicity groups while making a case for its relevance to economic theory and public policy. The complications can be reduced through effective prenatal care. Given the ethnical diversity of the U.S., and the obeserved disparities in maternal complications and access to prenatal care, it is critical that I analyze the relationship between prenatal care and maternal complications. To correct for the …

Product Of Coeffecients And Bootstrapping Estimation Apporaches To Expoloring Multiple Mediation Effects: A Comparison Of Cross-Sectional And Longitudinal Research, Taren Michelle Swindle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Modern approaches to estimation of mediation have evolved to create inconsistencies in the science. Researchers claim mediation effects with differential analytic techniques and discrepant considerations for the passage of time. This study compares and contrasts the results and substantive conclusions reached by four approaches to mediation estimation: (a) cross-sectional data with product of coefficients estimation mediation; (b) cross-sectional data with bootstrapping estimation of mediation; (c) longitudinal data with product of coefficients estimation; and (d) longitudinal data with bootstrapping estimates. An empirical example of multiple mediators in the relationship between neighborhood quality and child television exposure is provided. Findings were consistent …

The Callitrichidae are family of small New World primates with a suite of distinctive morphological and behavioral adaptations that set them apart from other primates. Of primary interest is their reproductive system that includes compulsive twinning: ≥80% of births) and cooperative care of offspring by individuals other than biological parents: termed alloparenting). Further, hematopoietic tissues in callitrichids display signals of both self and sibling DNA, due to an exchange of stem cells early in gestation that renders twin callitrichids as cellular mosaics of each other. This phenomenon is known as genetic chimerism, which increases genetic relatedness between individuals and is …

The Normative Dimensions Of Health Disparities, Andrew Ward, Pamela Jo Johnson, Mollie O'Brien
The Normative Dimensions Of Health Disparities, Andrew Ward, Pamela Jo Johnson, Mollie O'Brien
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Understanding what conditions must be satisfied for a health inequality to be a health inequity (disparity) is crucial for health policy makers. The failure to understand what constitutes a health inequity, and confusing health inequalities with health inequities threatens the successful creation of health policies by diverting needed attention and resources away from addressing health inequalities that are health inequities. More generally, the failure threatens to undercut our ability to tell what research is relevant to the creation of health policies that aim to mitigate or eliminate health inequities. With this in mind, the principal aim of the present paper …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Background: Promotores de Salud are impactful in reducing health disparities for Hispanic communities. The purpose of this paper is to present the training process and fidelity of study protocol implementation using a promotora model for community-based diabetes prevention.
Methods: Five Hispanic bilingual promotores were recruited from a Community Health Worker program and received intensive 30-hour promotora training on how to recruit participants, lead group sessions, and support participants making behavior changes. Evaluation of the training included a survey and focus group to assess promotores’ feedback, a post-training knowledge test to assess knowledge acquired during the training and an observational assessment …
International Deployment Of Microbial Pest Control Agents: Falling Between The Cracks Of The Convention On Biological Diversity And The Cartagena Biosafety Protocol?, Guy R. Knudsen
Pace Environmental Law Review
This paper considers one tangled web of conflicting developments. It involves the popular desire to replace chemical pesticides with more “natural” biological control strategies, plus a slowly emerging awareness of a less benign side to microbial pest control agents, based on their potential invasiveness and sometimes striking similarities to agents of bioterrorism and biological warfare. This desire, however, is overshadowed by concerns about the environmental release of genetically engineered organisms. I argue that as some of the concerns about ecological diversity, as captured by the Convention on Biodiversity, were channeled into the subsequent Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention …

Harmony With Nature And Genetically Modified Seeds: A Contradictory Concept In The United States And Brazil?, Heather Leibowitz
Pace Environmental Law Review
Looking at the differing regulatory frameworks for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the United States and Brazil, this Article will help demonstrate how a lack of scientifically objective standards has allowed regulatory agencies to circumvent environmentally protective and sustainable policies. Additionally, this analysis will help illuminate what corrective steps can be taken.

Evaluation Of The Impact Of Coping Skills Groups On Quality Of Life In Cancer Survivors And Co-Survivors, Erin Schweers Cornelius
Open Access Dissertations
A coping skills group intervention for cancer survivors and co-survivors was developed based upon the APPLES Indicators of Healing. The group was a six week intervention aimed at teaching specific coping skills hypothesized to improve the participants’ quality of life. Variables including illness-related distress, illness-related coping, and illness-related resilience were examined in their relation to quality of life prior to the start of the intervention, midway through the intervention, and after the intervention concluded. It was predicted that participation in the APPLES coping skills group intervention would significantly improve cancer survivors’ and co-survivors’ resiliency, quality of life, and use of …
