Importance Of Grass-Legume Choices On Cattle Grazing Behavior And Performance, Brody Todd Maughan May 2013

Importance Of Grass-Legume Choices On Cattle Grazing Behavior And Performance, Brody Todd Maughan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Livestock production systems have emphasized low diversity of high-producing forage species dependent upon costly fossil-fuel inputs. However, diversity of plants in natural systems is common, and diverse plant communities enable herbivores to meet needs for nutrition and health. Plants provide herbivores with nutrients and bioactive compounds – plant secondary compounds (SCs), which at appropriate concentrations can reduce internal parasites and greenhouse gas emissions, improve nutrient utilization and enhance meat quality in ruminants. In addition, SCs confer plants more resistance to environmental challenges such as drought or pests.

With my MS program, I sought to explore foraging behavior in cattle grazing …

Mosqui-to larvae feed on microorganisms (including protozoans) and particulate organic matter Most larval feeding experiments. howt:ver, have dealt exclusively with bacteria, fungi , and particulate organic matter Although bactena and fungi are important sources of nitrogen and lipids, they may be 111sufficient sources of carbon, which may …

Fruit And Vegetable Consumption At Bear River Charter School; A Demand Curve Analysis, Mckelle Tobey May 2013

Fruit And Vegetable Consumption At Bear River Charter School; A Demand Curve Analysis, Mckelle Tobey

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Many variables contribute to the rising prevalence of children being overweight and obese, one being poor nutrition and the lack of a balanced diet. Proper nutrition helps children to grow and develop normally, as well as lowers the risk of developing chronic problems such as cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and certain cancers later in life. Conducted alongside an applied behavioral intervention to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables, a behavioral economic evaluation of demand curves was administered to students in the fifth through eighth grades. Findings suggest that the intervention had no significant effect on the elasticity of the …

Design Of An Experimental Approach To Study The Growth Of Biofilm On Polymethylmethacrylate, Eireen S. Escalona

Biomedical Engineering

Biofilms are present in virtually every solid-liquid contact surface and are partially responsible for some diseases and water cleaning. They are a community of a variety of organisms that live symbiotically and are bound together by extracellular polymeric substances, or EPS. Biofilms go through five stages of development. These include initial and irreversible attachments, maturations I and II, and dispersion. In the dental world, biofilms are often associated with mouth infections including dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. Elderly denture wearers are susceptible to the pathogen-causing bacteria associated with these diseases, particularly those who have Alzheimer's disease or other forms of …

Myelin Is Not Required For Maintenance Of The Axon Initial Segment, Anna Josephson May 2013

Myelin Is Not Required For Maintenance Of The Axon Initial Segment, Anna Josephson

Theses and Dissertations

Axonal pathology is a major contributor to impaired motor, sensory and cognitive dysfunction associated with multiple sclerosis particularly with the progressive forms of the disease. However, the early pathologic events responsible for axonal deterioration remain unclear. It is well recognized that maintaining proper axonal function is intimately related to proper establishment and maintenance of axonal domains such as the node of Ranvier and the axon initial segment (AIS). Numerous laboratories, including ours, have investigated the mechanisms that regulate node of Ranvier formation and maintenance. These studies have shown that node of Ranvier formation and maintenance require myelin contact. Interestingly, many …

Predicting Complex Phenotype-Genotype Relationships In Grasses: A Systems Genetics Approach, Stephen Ficklin

All Dissertations

It is becoming increasingly urgent to identify and understand the mechanisms underlying complex traits. Expected increases in the human population coupled with climate change make this especially urgent for grasses in the Poaceae family because these serve as major staples of the human and livestock diets worldwide. In particular, Oryza sativa (rice), Triticum spp. (wheat), Zea mays (maize), and Saccharum spp. (sugarcane) are among the top agricultural commodities. Molecular marker tools such as linkage-based Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) mapping, Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), Multiple Marker Assisted Selection (MMAS), and Genome Selection (GS) techniques offer promise for understanding the mechanisms behind …

Attaining Sustainable Behavior Among Non-Environmentally-Motivated Individuals: A Formative Experiment, Brooklynn Wynveen May 2013

Attaining Sustainable Behavior Among Non-Environmentally-Motivated Individuals: A Formative Experiment, Brooklynn Wynveen

All Dissertations

Experts agree that overconsumption is a major problem in Western culture today, particularly in the United States. Thus, it is important to promote sustainable behavior among the general public. And yet, existing educational programming geared toward promoting such behavior changes remains appealing largely to environmentally-motivated audiences, as opposed to individuals with alternative (i.e., social and economic) motivations. In response to this discrepancy, I conducted a formative experiment with the goals of: 1) fostering participation among non-environmentally-motivated individuals in sustainable living educational programming; and 2) obtaining behavior change commitments, in the direction of more sustainable lifestyles, from those participants.
As part …

Integrating Biomechanics And Cell Physiology To Understanding Ivd Nutrition And Cell Homeostasis, Yongren Wu May 2013

Integrating Biomechanics And Cell Physiology To Understanding Ivd Nutrition And Cell Homeostasis, Yongren Wu

All Dissertations

Back pain associated with degeneration of the intervertebral disc (IVD) is a major public health problem in Western industrialized societies. Degeneration of the IVD changes the osmotic and nutrient environment in the extracellular matrix (ECM) which affects cell behaviors, including: cell proliferation, cell energy metabolism, and matrix synthesis. In addition, a thin layer of hyaline cartilaginous end-plate (CEP) at the superior/inferior disc-vertebral interface was found to play an important role in nutrient supply as well as load distribution in the IVD. Therefore, our general hypothesis is that the CEP regulates the ECM osmotic and nutrient environment which further affects IVD …
