Rates Of Obesity And Incidence Of Diabetes In Hispanics In The United States: An Examination Of The Epidemiological Paradox, Lucy Dean May 2013

Rates Of Obesity And Incidence Of Diabetes In Hispanics In The United States: An Examination Of The Epidemiological Paradox, Lucy Dean

Honors Theses

Using pooled data from the 2008-2011 National Health Interview Survey and employing multinomial and binomial logistic regression methods, this research examines disparities in rates of obesity and incidence of diabetes between individual Hispanic subgroups in comparison to non-Hispanic whites and blacks. Immigration status(including nativity, duration in the United States, and citizenship status) is hypothesized to play a central role in rates and obesity and incidence of diabetes. Unlike Cuban-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, and other Hispanics were more likely to be overweight as well as obese when compared to non-Hispanic whites. Mexican-Americans had the only significance in prevalence of type 2 …

Building A Community-Based Food System: Green Economic Development In Central Illinois, Tim Glaza May 2013

Building A Community-Based Food System: Green Economic Development In Central Illinois, Tim Glaza

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

It has been a challenge for many community-based, small to medium scale, fruit and vegetable farmers to meet the high demand of locally sourced food. Community-based producers have been mostly using farm stands, farmers’ markets and community-supported agriculture (CSAs) to meet this demand. Although there has been tremendous growth in the number of farmers’ markets and CSA subscriptions, a gap remains for institutional buyers demanding community-based food. Regional food hubs may be the critical piece needed for filling this gap. The Edible Economy Project in partnership with Heartland Community College is working on a regional food hub network project in …

Do User Fees Increase Tuberculosis Notifications?, Chioma Y. Chukwumah May 2013

Do User Fees Increase Tuberculosis Notifications?, Chioma Y. Chukwumah

Economics Honors Projects

Public health sectors around the world strive to provide accessible and affordable care. Tight government budgets and growing populations lead countries to consider adding or raising charges to health care consumers. These user fees may affect the quality, equity and revenue of health care. This paper investigates the impact of user fees on notifications of tuberculosis. In the panel data composed of 176 countries from 1960 to 2012, I find no evidence that suggests user fees increase tuberculosis. In contrast, I find strong and robust evidence suggesting user fees are associated with fewer new cases of tuberculosis.

Lead Uptake In Diverse Plant Families: A Study Applying X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy, Gudrun L. Bovenkamp, Alexander Prange, Wolfgang Schumacher, Kyungmin Ham, Aaron P. Smith, Josef Hormes

Faculty Publications

The chemical environment of lead in roots and leaves of plants from four different plant families and a lichen from a former lead mining site in the Eifel Mountains in Germany was determined by Pb L3-edge XANES measurements using solid reference compounds and also aqueous solutions of different ionic strength simulating the plant environment. Pb2+ ions in the plants were found to have two major coordinations, one with nine oxygen atoms in the first coordination shell similar to outer-sphere complexation and a second coordination with just three oxygen atoms similar to inner-sphere complexation. This can be interpreted assuming that lead …

Physiological Consequences Of Compensatory Growth: A Look At Snake Species Exhibiting Differential Sexual Size Dimorphism, Kaitlyn Pettingill May 2013

Physiological Consequences Of Compensatory Growth: A Look At Snake Species Exhibiting Differential Sexual Size Dimorphism, Kaitlyn Pettingill

Biology Theses

Although many life-history traits are inflexible, extrinsic factors are likely responsible for variation in attributes such as growth rates and ultimately adult body size. Nutritional stress during natal periods, in particular, has significant long-term consequences for adult characteristics. It is thought that poor natal nutrition leads to either the diversion of subsequent energy intake into compensatory growth or delayed maturation. Diversion of energy, to achieve compensation, however does not come without consequence; immune defense is a resource-demanding activity, which can trade- off with traits such as growth. Relatively little is known about the intra- or interspecific variation in immunological capabilities, …

The Design And Validation Of A Computational Model Of The Human Wrist Joint, Afsarul Mir May 2013

The Design And Validation Of A Computational Model Of The Human Wrist Joint, Afsarul Mir

Theses and Dissertations

Advancements in computational capabilities have allowed researchers to turn towards modeling as an efficient tool to replicate and predict outcomes of complex systems. Computational models of the musculoskeletal system have gone through various iterations with early versions employing dramatic simplifications. In this work, a three-dimensional computational model of the wrist joint was developed. It accurately recreated the skeletal structures of the hand and wrist and represented the constraints imposed by soft tissue structures like ligaments, tendons, and other surrounding tissues. It was developed to function as a tool to investigate the biomechanical contributions of structures and the kinematic response of …

Mechanobiology Of The Intervertebral Disc: Influences Of Static And Dynamic Compressions On Energy Metabolism, Chong Wang May 2013

Mechanobiology Of The Intervertebral Disc: Influences Of Static And Dynamic Compressions On Energy Metabolism, Chong Wang

Open Access Dissertations

Low back pain (LBP) is the leading reason for people to miss work and chief complaint of 5% people who visit doctors. Although it has a high impact in society, the causes of LBP cannot always be clarified. However, intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration has been reported to be a possible leading source for LBP. Since IVD is the biggest avascular tissue in human body, nutrition supply plays very important role for IVD degeneration. IVDs are under mechanical load all the time in vivo, it is also been revealed by in vitro studies that mechanical loadings can alter cellular activities including …

Packaging Print Buyer Willingness To Trade Off Image Quality For Environmental Benefits, Rattana Mayteekriengkrai May 2013

Packaging Print Buyer Willingness To Trade Off Image Quality For Environmental Benefits, Rattana Mayteekriengkrai

Theses

Consumers are increasingly concerned about environmental friendliness, in addition to product quality. However, widely used technologies are not yet capable of producing packaging that combines the highest level of image quality with the highest level of environmental friendliness. As a result, print buyers are forced to trade-off image quality for increased environmental friendliness. The amount of image quality that a print buyer is willing to trade-off for a given improvement in environmental friendliness is unknown. This is a problem for printers and print suppliers who are attempting to develop products without access to this potentially critical empirical design information. This …

Differences In Body Dissatisfaction In Male Collegiate Athletes, Sabrina L. Pavao May 2013

Differences In Body Dissatisfaction In Male Collegiate Athletes, Sabrina L. Pavao

Honors Program Theses and Projects

While research has examined the relationship between society’s ideal male body and body dissatisfaction in the general male population, less is known regarding the relationship between male body image ideals and body dissatisfaction in male athletes. However, research has suggested that male athletes are at greater risk for body dissatisfaction because they are exposed to two ideal bodies: that of society and their sport. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in body dissatisfaction for collegiate male athletes participating in various sports and to determine whether society’s or the sport’s ideal body has a greater influence on male …

Challenges Of Smoking Cessation Research In Mongolia, Carol M. Rowley May 2013

Challenges Of Smoking Cessation Research In Mongolia, Carol M. Rowley

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

The deleterious impact of tobacco use on health has been well-known for years. Nevertheless, cigarette smoking is a behavior which generally is not easily abandoned due to its addictive propensities. Thus, it is important for nurses to be competent in the delivery of evidence-based smoking cessation interventions which can help their clients achieve tobacco-free status. This need is particularly urgent in nations with high smoking prevalence rates, including many developing nations. The purpose of this study was two-fold. First, an investigation was undertaken to determine the smoking habits and influences among Eastern European nations, the former Soviet Union, and Mongolia. …

Underlying Conditions, Mariam Eqbal May 2013

Underlying Conditions, Mariam Eqbal

Theses and Dissertations

The following is a collection of lines, curves, and dots on a plane, representing words fashioned to communicate my ideas about relationships between the thing and the nothing. This thesis is like a map, a contour drawing, an assortment of lines, speaking my thoughts about things in relation to space and time. As something moving, developing into another thing, as a thing sentient, I am viewing, performing, and processing incremental acts. I am looking at water and I can see my reflection break into a thousand pieces. It is like watching time.

Dartmouth Scholarship

The concentrations of mineral nutrients in seeds are critical to both the life cycle of plants as well as human nutrition. These concentrations are strongly influenced by soil conditions, as shown here by quantifying the concentration of 14 elements in seeds from Arabidopsis thaliana plants grown under four different soil conditions: standard, or modified with NaCl, heavy metals, or alkali. Each of the modified soils resulted in a unique change to the seed ionome (the mineral nutrient content of the seeds). To help identify the genetic networks regulating the seed ionome, changes in elemental concentrations were evaluated using mutants corresponding …

Narrowing The Gap Between Imaginary And Real Artifacts: A Process For Making And Filming Diegetic Prototypes, Al Hussein Wanas May 2013

Narrowing The Gap Between Imaginary And Real Artifacts: A Process For Making And Filming Diegetic Prototypes, Al Hussein Wanas

Theses and Dissertations

Critical Design uses designed artifacts as a critique of consumer culture. However, the complex nature of these artifacts prompted designers to focus on the artifact and present it in an informative, but relatively isolated fashion. The theoretical framework for this thesis is drawn from a similar, yet more recent, design criterion called Design Fiction. The artifacts of Design Fiction are called Diegetic Prototypes: fictional prototypes that function in the social sphere of a film’s structure. This research develops a method for analyzing and creating artifacts, in reference to psychoanalysis theories on the human psyche and perception of objects. It then explores …
