Introduction The incidence of preventable chronic diseases is disproportionally high among African Americans and could be reduced through diet and physical activity interventions. Our objective was to systematically review the literature on clinical outcomes of diet and physical activity interventions conducted among adult African American populations in the United States. Methods We used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta Analysis construct in our review. We searched Medline (PubMed and Ovid), Cochrane, and DARE databases and restricted our search to articles published in English from January 2000 through December 2011. We included studies of educational interventions with clinically …

Effect Of Procedural Pain On Purines, Mda And Allantoin In Premature Infants, Megan Sue Holden Jun 2013

Effect Of Procedural Pain On Purines, Mda And Allantoin In Premature Infants, Megan Sue Holden

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Identifying and measuring the biochemical effects of procedural pain in infants is a continuing challenge for clinicians. To address this issue we evaluated the relationship between procedural pain, ATP utilization (hypoxanthine and uric acid), and oxidative stress (MDA and allantoin) in premature infants. Through these studies we found that 1) a single heel-lance significantly increases plasma uric acid in rabbit kits, 2) tape removal increases MDA and prevents a decrease in uric acid in the plasma of premature infants, and 3) a single dose of oral sucrose before a heel-lance is sufficient to significantly increase plasma markers of ATP utilization …

The Public Health Impact Of Maternal Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy : The San Bernardino County Experience, Michael Batech Jun 2013

The Public Health Impact Of Maternal Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy : The San Bernardino County Experience, Michael Batech

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Most studies of maternal tobacco cessation during pregnancy have estimated measures of effect that can be useful in identifying the exposure as an etiologic risk factor in maternal and child health. However, in the case of maternal tobacco use there is overwhelming evidence for a causal role in adverse infant outcomes, and public health needs to focus on measures of potential impact in order to better prioritize and allocate resources toward interventions. The aims of this dissertation were: 1) to investigate the public health impact of smoking cessation during pregnancy among mothers giving birth in San Bernardino County, California; and …

Maternal Smoking, Weight Status And Preecalmpsia And Eclampsia Risk Among Women Living In San Bernardino County, Fiona Bedelia Lewis

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Preeclampsia is defined as pregnancy-induced hypertension affecting between 2% and 8% of pregnancies and accounting for about 10-15% of maternal deaths worldwide. Eclampsia is defined as the occurrence of one or more episodes of seizures in a pregnant woman related only to a preeclampsia diagnosis. Preeclampsia, if poorly managed, can progress to eclampsia resulting in injury and death to both mother and infant. The etiology of preeclampsia is not completely understood. Oxidative stress leading to abnormal placenta development and endothelial dysfunction are thought to be key components in the biological mechanism of preeclampsia.

Modifiable risk factors include maternal body weight …

Perinatal Nicotine Exposure And Programming Of Hie Sensitive Phenotype In Neonatal Rat Brains, Yong Li Jun 2013

Perinatal Nicotine Exposure And Programming Of Hie Sensitive Phenotype In Neonatal Rat Brains, Yong Li

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Large epidemiological and animal studies have revealed a clear association of adverse intrauterine environment with the increased risk of metabolic, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. Maternal smoking is the single most widespread perinatal insult in the world and has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes for mother, fetus and the newborn. Our study aims to test the hypothesis that perinatal nicotine exposure induces reprogramming of susceptibility to hypoxic ischemic brain injury in the immature brain, focusing on the roles of AT1R and/or AT2R and trying to reveal the underlying epigenetic mechanisms. Therefore, we established two rat models: perinatal nicotine exposure model …

Water Consumption In The Middle East And North Africa (Mena) Region: A Virtual Water Approach, Matthew Timmerman

Theses and Dissertations

As the population of the MENA region rises, virtual water import is increasing, evident by striking food import figures in many of the region's countries. This is not a new development, it has long been the case that MENA countries have used the import of high water content agricultural commodities as a mechanism for covering domestic food consumption via external water. This said, as climate induced global water scarcity and population driven global water demand increase simultaneously, the MENA region's practice of importing water via agricultural commodities should gain increasing attention. The research herein quantitatively assesses MENA nations' virtual water …

This research examines the potential of volunteering to buffer participants from stress-related health declines associated with the death of a spouse.

Using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), this research investigates the moderating role of volunteering on the self-rated health and depressive symptoms of recently widowed older adults. Consecutive waves of the HRS are used to identify respondents who experience the death of a spouse or who remain married, and those …

Evolutionary Dynamics On Complex Networks, Swami Iyer Jun 2013

Evolutionary Dynamics On Complex Networks, Swami Iyer

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Many complex systems such as the Internet can be represented as networks, with vertices denoting the constituent components of the systems and edges denoting the patterns of interactions among the components. In this thesis, we are interested in how the structural properties of a network, such as its average degree, degree distribution, clustering, and homophily affect the processes that take place on it. In the first part of the thesis we focus on evolutionary game theory models for studying the evolution of cooperation in a population of predominantly selfish individuals. In the second part we turn our attention to an …

Biochemistry Of 1, 2-Dehydro-N-Acetyldopamine Derivatives, Adal T. Abebe Jun 2013

Biochemistry Of 1, 2-Dehydro-N-Acetyldopamine Derivatives, Adal T. Abebe

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Dehydrodopa/dopamine derivatives form an important group of biomolecules participating in sclerotization of all arthropod cuticles, gluing and cementing mussels and related organisms to solid surfaces, and defense reactions of countless marine and invertebrate organisms. Yet very little information is available on the biochemistry of these highly reactive and unstable molecules. To understand their physiological role, I conducted a thorough biochemical study on three representative compounds that cover the entire plethora of dehydrodopa/dopamine derivatives. Employing diode array UV-visible spectroscopy, HPLC, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry, I investigated the oxidation chemistry of 1,2-dehydro-N-acetyldopamine (dehydro NADA), 1,2-dehydro-N-acetyldopa and 1,2-dehydro-N-acetyldopa …

Herbert Hoover And Belgian Relief, Albert Winkler Jun 2013

Herbert Hoover And Belgian Relief, Albert Winkler

Faculty Publications

Herbert Hoover was an orphan, who retained great empathy for the weak and hungry his entire life. Working without pay, he organized and administered Belgian Relief starting in 1914 to get food to ten million Belgians and Frenchmen behind German lines. His efforts doubtlessly saved hundreds of thousands from starvation. This was only the starting point in his career as the "Great Humanitarian." He got food to Germany at the end of both world wars, aided Russia in their great famine, and reportedly got food to hundreds of millions of people in his lengthy career. No one has ever done …

On The Derivation Of Estimators Of Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (Fgt) Poverty Indices, Oyedeji I. Osowole, Adebayo T. Bamiduro

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

Poverty analysis has relied heavily on data in summarized form and this has created dearth of knowledge on the statistical properties of Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) poverty indices. This study derived estimators of FGT poverty indices from first principles in an attempt to provide an insight into some intrinsic characteristics of FGT indices. The estimators are found to be reasonably unbiased and consistent. The estimates of the indices obtained from the estimators are approximately 53%, 22% and 12% for the head count, poverty gap and square poverty gap indices. From the conventional method, the estimates are approximately 52%, 21% and 11% respectively. …

Representations Of Privileged Motherhood In Nineteenth-Century Literature: A Comparative Analysis Of Leo Tolstoy’S Anna Karenina And Kate Chopin’S The Awakening, Dina Alhassani Jun 2013

Representations Of Privileged Motherhood In Nineteenth-Century Literature: A Comparative Analysis Of Leo Tolstoy’S Anna Karenina And Kate Chopin’S The Awakening, Dina Alhassani

Theses and Dissertations

The heroines of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and Chopin’s The Awakening enjoy the autonomy of privileged motherhood in the nineteenth century. This role allows them the opportunities to forge their identities independent of most of the societal expectations which defined nineteenth-century feminine gender roles. The spinster enjoyed independence and yet had limited social interactions due to her perceived lack of femininity. By contrast, most mothers from lower and middle class backgrounds had fulfilled the idealized maternal role at the expense of independence and self-determination. In the context of nineteenth-century gender roles, the privileged mother enjoys the combined best aspects of spinsterhood …
