Disclosure, Scholarly Ethics, And The Future Of Law Reviews: A Few Preliminary Thoughts, Ronald K.L. Collins, Lisa G. Lerman Jun 2013

Disclosure, Scholarly Ethics, And The Future Of Law Reviews: A Few Preliminary Thoughts, Ronald K.L. Collins, Lisa G. Lerman

Washington Law Review

Scholarship is the work-product of scholars. The word derives the Latin schola, as in school. Hence, scholarship is related to education, which in turn is related to the advancement of human knowledge. By that measure, the best scholarship may increase our knowledge, both practical and theoretical. But when undisclosed bias affects that which is offered up as knowledge, it may unduly slant our understanding of life, law, and other things that matter. While bias-free knowledge may be a utopian ideal, it is, nonetheless, a principle worthy of our respect.

Disclosure As Distribution, Jeremy N. Sheff Jun 2013

Disclosure As Distribution, Jeremy N. Sheff

Washington Law Review

This brief response to the work of Professors Omri Ben-Shahr and Carl Schneider on mandated disclosure regimes investigates the normative criteria underlying their claim that those regimes are failures. Specifically, it unpacks the pieces of those authors’ implicit cost-benefit analysis, revealing inherently normative judgments about desert and responsibility at the core of their (or any) critique of disclosure regimes. Disclosure regimes may aim to improve human decisionmaking behaviors, but those behaviors are influenced in non-deterministic ways by cognitive capacities that are heterogeneously distributed among subjects of the regimes. Accordingly, any claim regarding the normative desirability of disclosure regimes (or any …

Concentrated Fish Oil (Lovaza®) Extends Lifespan And Attenuates Kidney Disease In Lupus-Prone Short-Lived (Nzbxnzw)F1 Mice, Ganesh V. Halade, Paul J. Williams, Jyothi M. Veigas, Jeffrey L. Barnes, Gabriel Fernandes

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

A growing number of reports indicate that anti-inflammatory actions of fish oil (FO) are beneficial against systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the majority of pre-clinical studies were performed using 5-20% FO, which is higher than the clinically relevant dose for lupus patients. The present study was performed in order to determine the effective low dose of FDA-approved concentrated FO (Lovaza®) compared to the commonly used FO-18/12 (18-Eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA]/12-Docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]). We examined the dose-dependent response of Lovaza® (1% and 4%) on an SLE mouse strain (NZBxNZW)F1 and compared the same with 1% and 4% placebo, as well as 4% …

Reevaluating The Conceptual Framework For Applied Research On Host-Plant Resistance, Michael J. Stout Jun 2013

Reevaluating The Conceptual Framework For Applied Research On Host-Plant Resistance, Michael J. Stout

Faculty Publications

Applied research on host-plant resistance to arthropod pests has been guided over the past 60 years by a framework originally developed by Reginald Painter in his 1951 book, Insect Resistance in Crop Plants. Painter divided the "phenomena" of resistance into three "mechanisms," nonpreference (later renamed antixenosis), antibiosis, and tolerance. The weaknesses of this framework are discussed. In particular, this trichotomous framework does not encompass all known mechanisms of resistance, and the antixenosis and antibiosis categories are ambiguous and inseparable in practice. These features have perhaps led to a simplistic approach to understanding arthropod resistance in crop plants. A dichotomous scheme …

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 36 loci associated with body mass index (BMI), predominantly in populations of European ancestry. We conducted a meta-analysis to examine the association of >3.2 million SNPs with BMI in 39,144 men and women of African ancestry and followed up the most significant associations in an additional 32,268 individuals of African ancestry. We identified one new locus at 5q33 (GALNT10, rs7708584, P = 3.4 × 10-11) and another at 7p15 when we included data from the GIANT consortium (MIR148A-NFE2L3, rs10261878, P = 1.2 × 10-10). We also found suggestive evidence of an association at a …

Deconstructing And Reconstructing Hot News: Toward A Functional Approach, Jeffrey L. Harrison, Robyn Shelton Jun 2013

Deconstructing And Reconstructing Hot News: Toward A Functional Approach, Jeffrey L. Harrison, Robyn Shelton

UF Law Faculty Publications

Hot news is factual, time-sensitive information ranging from baseball scores to the outbreak of war. In recent years, hot news has found its own niche among legal scholars and courts. When deconstructed, though, hot news is simply information and, like most information, it has a public good character. The problem ultimately is that news is non-excludable and non-rivalrous – discoverers or creators of hot news cannot exclude others from using the news and hot news is not destroyed when used. This means it may be produced at levels that are less than optimal.

The critical element in hot news is …

Diets And Food Selection Of Female Mallards And Blue-Winged Teal During Spring Migration, Paul R. Tidwell, Elisabeth B. Webb, Mark P. Vrtiska, Andrew A. Bishop Jun 2013

Diets And Food Selection Of Female Mallards And Blue-Winged Teal During Spring Migration, Paul R. Tidwell, Elisabeth B. Webb, Mark P. Vrtiska, Andrew A. Bishop

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Waterfowl nutritional requirements and food availability at migration stopover habitats may differ from those at nesting or wintering areas. Although there is little information on factors that influence waterfowl diets and food selection during migration, we hypothesized that bird age and wetland density in the surrounding landscape would influence food selection. Thus, the objective of this study was to quantify mallard Anas platyrhynchos and blue-winged teal Anas discors diets during migration and evaluate effects of age and wetland density on waterfowl food selection. We collected 30 mallards and 29 blue-winged teal with food items present in esophagi from wetlands in …

Global Health Rights: Employing Human Rights To Develop And Implement The Framework Convention On Global Health, Lance Gable, Benjamin Mason Meier

Law Faculty Research Publications

The Framework Convention on Global Health (FCGH) represents an important idea for addressing the expanding array of governance challenges in global health. Proponents of the FCGH suggest that it could further the right to health through its incorporation of rights into national laws and policies, using litigation and community empowerment to advance rights claims and prominently establish the right to health as central to global health governance. Building on efforts to expand development and influence of the right to health through the implementation of the FCGH, in this article we find that human rights correspondingly holds promise in justifying the …

Decomposition And Nutrient Release Of Different Cover Crops In Organic Farm Systems, Jianru Shi Jun 2013

Decomposition And Nutrient Release Of Different Cover Crops In Organic Farm Systems, Jianru Shi

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Cover crops act as green manure adding organic matter to agricultural-soils. For legume green manures to be an effective nitrogen (N) source for organic farming systems, their N release must be in synchrony with crop N demand. The objectives of this study were 1) determine the decomposition rates of three common cover crops (white clover, (Trifolium repens,L ) red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and soybean (Glycine max L) in order to determine when most N was released and its synchrony with subsequent corn crop uptake; 2) we focused on the effect of cover crops on soil …

Aarp And The Politics Of The Obama Election: "Tough Times, Tough Choices", Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

The 2008 election and first two years of President Barack Obama’s administration was the context for an analysis of AARP news coverage. This research examined how news coverage was presented in the AARP Bulletin. During the health care debate, AARP often mentioned President Obama over congressional leaders. However, after passage of the law and subsequent election of a new congress, the Republican perspective offered a balance to the president’s agenda. The AARP Bulletin may be an agenda setter on controversial issues. This study explored themes, such as “tough times, tough choices,” which appeared to influence the coverage of political issues.

Functional Annotation, Transcriptional Characterization And Enzymatic Contributions Of Essential Amino Acid Biosynthesis-Related Genes, Teresa J. Clark Jun 2013

Functional Annotation, Transcriptional Characterization And Enzymatic Contributions Of Essential Amino Acid Biosynthesis-Related Genes, Teresa J. Clark

Masters Theses

In plants, essential amino acid biosynthesis predominantly or exclusively occurs in the plastid. The plastid in the heterokont alga Nannochloropsis oceanica is surrounded by four membranes, which add great complexity to intracellular trafficking and communication. N. oceanica genes in essential amino acid biosynthesis were functionally annotated. The biosynthesis pathways resemble the pathways in Arabidopsis thaliana, but the gene content seems to be simpler in N. oceanica.

In addition, two A. thaliana mutants with loss-of-function mutations in the aspartate kinase-homoserine dehydrogenase 2 (AK-HSDH2) gene were characterized. These ak-hsdh2 mutants demonstrate unexpected accumulation of aspartate-derived amino acids (ADAAs), particularly threonine, in …

The Contribution Of Finance To Agricultural Production In Nigeria, O. M. Mbutor, R. E. Ochu, I. I. Okafor

Economic and Financial Review

Several studies have found a positive correlation between agricultural financing and the performance of the agricultural sector. But fewer efforts have been directed at sieving out the agricultural output that is exclusively associated with the extent of funding. This study aimed to ascertain the actual portion of total agricultural output that could be attributed to agricultural financing in Nigeria. The vector error correction methodology was applied following the nature of data properties. The results showed a positive effect of finance on agricultural output. However, variance decomposition revealed the poor state of agricultural financing with a disproportionate dependence of the sector …

Utilization Of Wet Corn Distillers Grain For The Production Of Cellulase Enzymes And Value Added Products, Hunter R. Flodman Jun 2013

Utilization Of Wet Corn Distillers Grain For The Production Of Cellulase Enzymes And Value Added Products, Hunter R. Flodman

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Distillers grain, a byproduct from the dry grind corn ethanol industry, is an industrially available, abundant, preprocessed material comprised primarily of cellulose, hemicellulose, protein, oil, and minerals. This research investigated the utilization of distillers grain as a substrate for solid-state fermentation (SSF). SSF is the growth of microorganisms on a moist, solid substrate in the absence of free water. The substrate acts as both the nutrient source and as a solid support for the microorganisms, typically filamentous fungi. SSF has the unique ability to convert agricultural byproducts into valuable bioproducts such as enzymes and organic acids without hydrolyzing polysaccharides to …
