Public Policy Practicum Projects

LIFT-Boston, a local non-profit organization, entered into a collaborative partnership in September 2012 with McCormack Graduate School Public Policy Ph.D. students and faculty to develop and execute a research project. The goals of this endeavor were to assist LIFT-Boston in understanding the outcomes associated with its services and enable the organization to further pursue service goals.

The primary research questions respond to the organization’s most fundamental questions. These include how the organization’s unique service model impacts clients across several objective and subjective dimensions of well-being. Secondary questions focus on how these impacts may translate into increases or decreases in student …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While the primary risk factor for COPD is cigarette smoke exposure, vitamin D deficiency has been epidemiologically implicated as a factor in the progressive development of COPD-associated emphysema. Because of difficulties inherent to studies involving multiple risk factors in the progression of COPD in humans, we developed a murine model in which to study the separate and combined effects of vitamin D deficiency and cigarette smoke exposure. During a 16-week period, mice were exposed to one of four conditions, control diet breathing room air (CD-NS), control …

Information In Formation: Cognition Inspired Objects And Furniture, Katherine Marsh

Theses

For this thesis, I intend to identify subject matters that reflect my interpretation of modern, relevant accounts about the world. Through research into the chosen subjects, I will gather related data and observations. This information will be processed to formulate relationships and narrative. Such graphic displays of information for these stories will be my inspiration. My interpretations will be further realized visually through my design process. Archetypes of the proposed furniture or object will be chosen based on the potential relationship between them and the chosen narrative topic. Visual abstractions and patterns will emerge from inspiration derived from the topographical …

Utilizing The Designer Within: A Healthcare Case Study, Alastair Macdonald Jun 2013

Utilizing The Designer Within: A Healthcare Case Study, Alastair Macdonald

Nordes Conference Series

This paper explores the utilization of design skills and approaches by non-designers within the context of rehabilitation in healthcare. The author proposes that within us all is the set of skills, strategies and modes of thinking commonly found in designers that, if recognised, understood and practiced, could potentially be harnessed by nondesigners to assist them in everyday situations. Rather than this usurping the designers’ role, designers may have the potential to help ‘unlock’ these capabilities in others and help change the patient-to-healthcare professional relationship. This idea is explored using a pilot study involving spinal cord injuries patients in rehabilitation.

Design Experiments For Sustainable Eating In Finland, Young-Ae Hahn, Marja Seliger Jun 2013

Design Experiments For Sustainable Eating In Finland, Young-Ae Hahn, Marja Seliger

Nordes Conference Series

This paper presents two design experiment opportunities on sustainable eating in Finland. First, clarification of scientific concepts is urgent because misconceptions lead consumers to focus on minor issues, or to develop negative perceptions on sustainability. Second, a socio-cultural approach to sustainable eating is proposed, by investigating Finnish consumers’ perceptions on food origins, how their social identities are shaped/expressed with food, and the sustainability of popular Finnish recipes. Future design experiments on consumers’ knowledge, attitudes, or behaviours with public installations and commercial data collection systems are proposed.

Design For Future Uses: Pluralism, Fetishism And Ignorance, Cristiano Storni Jun 2013

Design For Future Uses: Pluralism, Fetishism And Ignorance, Cristiano Storni

Nordes Conference Series

In this paper, I question the epistemological and chronological politics of design. Concerned with the role of technology and design in a democratic society, I problematize the divisions between expert and lay knowledge, and between design (before) and use (after). I argue that designs that assumes those divisions risk of colonizing the future, and limiting the possibility of appreciating different forms of knowledge that are not available/voiced at design time. Drawing on a series of Science and Technology Studies about the interplay between knowledge and ignorance in our society, I argue for an approach to design for future uses that …

The Fat Factory: Chewing The Fat, Mike Thompson, Danielle Arets Jun 2013

The Fat Factory: Chewing The Fat, Mike Thompson, Danielle Arets

Nordes Conference Series

In 2005, the global adult biomass hit around 287 million metric tons, 15 million metric tonnes of which being caused by an overweight global population (a body mass of 25 or greater). As the worlds population continues to soar (the UN estimates the world population will reach 9.1 billion by 2050) there will be considerably more mouths to feed, and energy needed to sustain this rate of development. Paradoxically then, fat is both a waste of resources and a valuable resource in its own right. The Fat Factory is a Critical Design Research project investigating the full, untapped potential of …

Balancing Food Values: Making Sustainable Choices In Cooking Practices, Annelise De Jong, Lenneke Kuijer, Thomas Rydell Jun 2013

Balancing Food Values: Making Sustainable Choices In Cooking Practices, Annelise De Jong, Lenneke Kuijer, Thomas Rydell

Nordes Conference Series

Within user-centred design and topics such as persuasive design, pleasurable products, and design for sustainable behaviour, there is a danger of over-determining, pacifying or reducing people’s diversity. Taking the case of sustainable food, we have looked into the social aspects of cooking at home, in specific related to the type of food that is purchased. This paper describes what it means for people to make more sustainable choices in food shopping and how that can be mediated while taking different ‘food values’ that household members have into account. In a design experiment, we developed a service for selecting daily dinner …

Oxidative stress is involved in age-related cognitive decline. The dietary antioxidants, carotenoids, tocopherols, and vitamin A may play a role in the prevention or delay in cognitive decline. In this study, sera were obtained from 78 octogenarians and 220 centenarians from the Georgia Centenarian Study. Brain tissues were obtained from 47 centenarian decedents. Samples were analyzed for carotenoids, α-tocopherol, and retinol using HPLC. Analyte concentrations were compared with cognitive tests designed to evaluate global cognition, dementia, depression and cognitive domains (memory, processing speed, attention, and executive functioning). Serum lutein, zeaxanthin, and β-carotene concentrations were most consistently related to better cognition …

Air-Quality And Climatic Consequences Of Bioenergy Crop Cultivation, William Christian Porter Jun 2013

Air-Quality And Climatic Consequences Of Bioenergy Crop Cultivation, William Christian Porter

Dissertations and Theses

Bioenergy is expected to play an increasingly significant role in the global energy budget. In addition to the use of liquid energy forms such as ethanol and biodiesel, electricity generation using processed energy crops as a partial or full coal alternative is expected to increase, requiring large-scale conversions of land for the cultivation of bioenergy feedstocks such as cane, grasses, or short rotation coppice. With land-use change identified as a major contributor to changes in the emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), many of which are known contributors to the pollutants ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter …

Juvenile Hormone And Insulin Regulate Trehalose Homeostasis In The Red Flour Beetle, Tribolium Castaneum, Jingjing Xu, Zhentao Sheng, Subba R. Palli

Entomology Faculty Publications

Insulin/IGF-1 signaling (IIS) has been well studied for its role in the control of life span extension and resistance to a variety of stresses. The Drosophila melanogaster insulin-like receptor (InR) mutant showed extended life span due to reduced juvenile hormone (JH) levels. However, little is known about the mechanism of cross talk between IIS and JH in regulation of life span extension and resistance to starvation. In the current study, we investigated the role of IIS and JH signaling in regulation of resistance to starvation. Reduction in JH biosynthesis, JH action, or insulin-like peptide 2 (ILP2) syntheses by RNA interference …
