A National Examination Of Extension Professionals’ Use Of Evaluation: Does Intended Use Improve Effort?, Alexa J. Lamm, Glenn D. Israel

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

As state and federal budgets tighten, Extension must be accountable for the use of public funds if it wants to maintain current funding levels. While those working within Extension know the long-term successes of Extension programs, data detailing these are limited. High quality evaluations must be developed to collect the data needed to exhibit public value. One way to encourage the collection of rigorous data is through the use of evaluation. Evaluation use creates an environment that encourages organizational thinking that can result in accountability reports adequate for funding decisions. This study examined how Extension professionals’ engagement in evaluation is …

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Functioning within a defined administrative framework and meeting the needs of the stakeholders are essential in an Extension appointment. The first day of employment starts the promotion and tenure clock. It is the responsibility of the new Extension professional to take immediate steps to move forward with development of programming and application of the skill set that they bring to the job. Finding success in the first year of an Extension appointment revolves around understanding the expectations of the institution and the needs of the stakeholders. Once the institutional expectations and programming needs are understood, formulating a strategy that includes …

Exploring Familial Themes In Malaysian Students’ Eating Behaviors, Car Mun Kok

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Food-related attitudes and habits are integral to overall well-being, especially among international college students who often practice poor eating habits and experience high levels of stress from factors like school and sociocultural adjustment. Utilizing in-depth interviews, this study explored how family experiences impact food-related habits, attitudes, and beliefs of Malaysian college students in the U.S. Findings indicate that early experiences with family substantially impact current habits that persist even after coming to the U.S. and that dietary choices and habits are heavily embedded in cultural background and family history. Family influenced current habits through multiple means, including modeling, direct teaching, …

Conchocelis were cultured under varying conditions of irradiance (0, 10, 40 and 160 µmol photons m-2s-1), nutrient concentration (0, f/4, f/2 and f) for up to 60 days (with temperature 11°C and salinity 30ppt). Chlorophyll a (Chl a ) content was measured by spectrophotometry. Results indicated that Chl content varied with different culture conditions and species. Photosynthetic pigment was significantly affected by irradiance, nutrient concentration and culture duration, …

Hypocrisy At The Lectern Do Our Personal Lifestyle Choices Reflect Our Spoken Commitment To Global Sustainabilty?, William L. Weis Jun 2013

Hypocrisy At The Lectern Do Our Personal Lifestyle Choices Reflect Our Spoken Commitment To Global Sustainabilty?, William L. Weis

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Do our actions model a genuine commitment to global sustainability? Or do they belie that spoken commitment? These questions are addressed in this article, drawing on bodies of substantive research tying personal behavioral choices to global warming, fresh water scarcity, energy resource management, the absorptive capacity of the earth to sustain life, and a viable sharing of the earth’s resources to assure a basic level of social justice. A compelling case is made that our personal lifestyles are not incongruence with our avowed concerns for an environmentally sustainable earth and a just sharing of its bounties. The article treats environmental …

The Wicked Problems Of Global Sustainability Need Wicked (Good) Leaders And Wicked (Good) Collaborative Solutions, Sandra Waddock Jun 2013

The Wicked Problems Of Global Sustainability Need Wicked (Good) Leaders And Wicked (Good) Collaborative Solutions, Sandra Waddock

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Making a difference in the pursuit of a more sustainable world increasingly requires the ability to contend successfully with the wicked problem that is sustainability, and this shift needs to happen at the societal as well as the organizational level. Dealing successfully with issues of sustainability means creating greater system resilience and using resources more wisely, which means working successfully across boundaries, be they sector, organizational, policy, or functional ones. Wicked problems are poorly formulated, confusing, and have many different constituents or stakeholders with conflicting values. This article argues that developing wicked (good) leadership that is collaboratively oriented and wicked …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programs were developed in the mid to late 1990s in Mexico and Brazil in response to the economic upheavals that affected the poor and vulnerable in Latin America following the imposition of structural adjustment policies. These social protection programs provide immediate cash disbursements under beneficiary compliance with health and education requirements, particularly for children and mothers. Since then, CCT programs have been implemented throughout Latin America and are rapidly being introduced in Africa and Asia, including the Philippines. Since the mid 2000s, the World Bank and other international financial institutions have been significantly involved in the …

Quality Of Lunch On Cognitive Performance, Corbin Miller, Dr. Joseph Price

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my project is to discover whether or not there is a link between the nutritional quality of food served for elementary school lunch and test scores. Our hypothesis is that eating a more healthy meal prior to taking a test will improve cognitive performance. The two sources of data that are required for this project to succeed are the school lunch menu data and the corresponding test scores. I have already retrieved the school lunch menu data from Westridge and Rock Canyon elementary schools in the Provo School District. We are currently waiting on permission to access …

Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: A Systematic Review Of The Association, Michael S. Robinson Jun 2013

Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: A Systematic Review Of The Association, Michael S. Robinson

Student Works

Purpose: To explore whether there is an association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and depression, the nature of the relationship, and implications for practicing health care professionals. Data Sources: Peer reviewed articles obtained through electronic database search in: CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, and PsychINFO between the years of 2006 and 2013. Results: MetS and depression have a bidirectional association; MetS leads to depression and vice-versa. More severe depression has a stronger association with MetS. Increased waist circumference (AKA: abdominal obesity, body mass index [BMI]), elevated triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol are the MetS components most commonly/strongly associated depression. Though not …

Predicting Social-Emotional And Cognitive Development At 24 Months: The Impact Of Postnatal Maternal Anxiety And Depressive Symptoms, And Mother-Child Relationship, Stephanie F. Donahue

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Early childhood is a particularly sensitive time for development, and experiences during this time of life have a lasting impact on later development (Shonkoff & Phillips, 2000). As part of these early experiences, mother-child relationships often become important influences on young children’s social-emotional and cognitive development (e.g., Laible & Thompson, 2007; Osofsky & Liebernman, 2011). Similarly, mothers’ mental health can impact their relationships with their children (e.g., Nicol-Harber, Harvey, & Stein, 2007; Stein et al., 2008) and their children’s development (e.g., Grace, Evindar, & Stewart, 2003; Skylerman et al., 2007). The purpose of this study was to explore the influences …
