International Journal of Exercise Science 6(3) : 250-255, 2013. With the emergence of shared facilities, the possibility of a processing delay is increased as time on instrumentation becomes less available. The purpose of this investigation was the evaluate the effect of a 24h time delay on lymphocyte subset concentration, as well as for the apoptotic marker annexin V. Fourteen healthy individuals completed an incremental treadmill test to exhaustion, and blood samples were obtained before and after exercise. The samples were labeled in duplicate with mixtures consisting of flow cytometry staining buffer, the biomarker for early-phase cell death (annexin V), and …

Activity-Specific Effects Of Fatigue Protocols May Influence Landing Kinematics: A Pilot Study, Adrian Chavez, Duane Knudson, Rod Harter, Kevin Mccurdy
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 6(3) : 242-249, 2013. Fatigue is a common neuromuscular factor examined in relation to risk of ACL injury. Unfortunately, variations between the protocols used to induce fatigue in studies examining this phenomenon may have contributed to reported inconsistencies in the effects of fatigue on movements with high-risk of ACL injury. In addition, the ecological validity of fatigue experienced as a result of protocols commonly administered in the experimental setting is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the ecological validity, using basketball competition as the criterion measure, of two fatigue protocols commonly used …

Women As Leaders In Differing Microfinance Models, Rae M. Randleman
Women As Leaders In Differing Microfinance Models, Rae M. Randleman
Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought
One of the original microfinance institutions (MFIs) is Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and the founder of the bank is Muhammad Yunus (2007). Yunus (2007) initiated a discourse that stated that microloans granted to women resulted in, among other things, increased female empowerment. Much of the global microfinance industry (MFI) has mimicked Yunus’ focus on women and thus created a global master narrative which stated that the capitalist system of credit provided to marginalized women can alleviate poverty and empower women. Other development organizations contend that by itself microfinance cannot empower women; empowerment also requires long-term efforts to influence change in …

Population Cancer Risks Associated With Coal Mining: A Systematic Review, Wiley D. Jenkins, W. Jay Christian, Georgia Mueller, K. Thomas Robbins
Population Cancer Risks Associated With Coal Mining: A Systematic Review, Wiley D. Jenkins, W. Jay Christian, Georgia Mueller, K. Thomas Robbins
Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Coal is produced across 25 states and provides 42% of US energy. With production expected to increase 7.6% by 2035, proximate populations remain at risk of exposure to carcinogenic coal products such as silica dust and organic compounds. It is unclear if population exposure is associated with increased risk, or even which cancers have been studied in this regard.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review of English-language manuscripts published since 1980 to determine if coal mining exposure was associated with increased cancer risk (incidence and mortality).
RESULTS: Of 34 studies identified, 27 studied coal mining as an occupational exposure …
Using Gis To Teach Placed-Based Mathematics In Rural Classrooms, Jacqueline Leonard, Nicole M. Russell, Robert M. Hobbs, Heather Buchanan
Using Gis To Teach Placed-Based Mathematics In Rural Classrooms, Jacqueline Leonard, Nicole M. Russell, Robert M. Hobbs, Heather Buchanan
The Rural Educator
The purpose of this article is to promote the use of GIS and place-based education (PBE) in rural mathematics classrooms. The pedagogy of place is disappearing from rural communities because of declining enrollments, lack of support, and federal mandates to focus more on basic academic skills. However, PBE does not stand in opposition to standards-based instruction and academic achievement; rather, it enhances instructional strategies for getting at these aims. We present examples of place that can be used to engage rural students in meaningful mathematics activities to improve their content knowledge and problem-solving ability. Barriers exist to full implementation of …
Psychometric Testing Of Cooper Parental Self-Efficacy Scale-Child Health Behavior, Johnnie Susan Wijewardane
Psychometric Testing Of Cooper Parental Self-Efficacy Scale-Child Health Behavior, Johnnie Susan Wijewardane
Dissertations
Although numerous self-efficacy scales grounded in Bandura's theory of self-efficacy were available, no specific scale that measured the concept of parental self-efficacy to influence child health behavior existed. The researcher developed the Cooper Parental Self-Efficacy Scale-Child Health Behavior (CPSS-CHB) and previously conducted a content validation study. The aims of this study were to 1.) ensure that the 28-item CPSS-CHB was readable, 2.) to determine reliability of the scale, and 3.) to initiate the establishment of validity.

Although diet is thought to affect the natural history of heart failure (HF), nutrient intake in HF patients has not been well studied. Based on prior research linking high intake of Ca, Mg and K to improved cardiovascular health, we hypothesised that these nutrients would be inversely associated with mortality in people with HF. Of the 161 808 participants in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), we studied 3340 who experienced a HF hospitalisation. These participants were followed for post-hospitalisation all-cause mortality. Intake was assessed using questionnaires on food and supplement intake. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % CI were calculated …
Validation Of Copy Number Variants Associated With Schizophrenia Risk In An Irish Population And Implications To Clinical Practice, Rachel L. Elves
Validation Of Copy Number Variants Associated With Schizophrenia Risk In An Irish Population And Implications To Clinical Practice, Rachel L. Elves
Theses and Dissertations
Schizophrenia is a complex disorder affecting 1% of the population and is highly heritable, but the majority of contributing genetic factors has remained elusive. Current risk estimates for clinical practice are primarily determined by family history and associated empirical risk. Copy number variants (CNVs) may hold the key to explaining the missing heritability in schizophrenia research; schizophrenia risk estimates as high as 30% have been found for the most-studied CNV associated with schizophrenia, 22q11. Currently, there are methods to identify CNVs though previously collected data from SNP microarrays that would facilitate these types of studies. To determine if algorithms that …

The Political Determinants Of Health: The Impact Of Political Factors On Black-White Infant Mortality In The United States, Rongal D. Nikora
The Political Determinants Of Health: The Impact Of Political Factors On Black-White Infant Mortality In The United States, Rongal D. Nikora
Political Science ETDs
Objective This exploratory research project considers the role that the political culture of individual U.S. states may play in determining variation in the countrys infant mortality rate. Specifically, do conventional and/or racialized measures of political culture help explain state-to-state variation, particularly in black infant mortality, as well as the longstanding mortality gap between infants born to black and white women? Conventional measures of political culture in this study include a state's past voting record in presidential elections, as well as how states are categorized under Elazar's (1966) typology of state civic culture (i.e., as moralistic, individualistic or traditionalistic). Racialized measures …

Physical Activity And Psychosocial Adjustment Among 1st And 2nd Year Undergraduate Students, Vanessa Mikan
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
The transition from adolescence into young adulthood can present many new challenges. How well and to what degree students are able to effectively meet the demands and challenges of college has been labeled as adjustment (Mattanah, Hancock, & Brand, 2004). There is a growing interest and need for effective strategies and programs that can assist students in the transition to college. The purpose of this study was to identify how participation in physical activity, as measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) Short Form may assist or hinder in students academic, social, personal-emotional adjustment and institutional attachment to college …

Teacher Perceptions About Diversity And The Achievement Gap: Understanding The Discursive Construction Of Whiteness, Virginia Padilla Vigil
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Teacher perceptions about diversity and the achievement gap were examined. Participants were alternative teacher licensure candidates at the student teaching phase of their preparation program. Two-hour individual, in-depth, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with each of the participants. Additionally, the participants participated in focus groups that engaged them in discourse about the achievement gap (definitions, contributing factors, and solutions). Finally, the participants submitted written statements related to diversity, multiculturalism and critically reflective practice. Critical discourse analysis of the interview/focus group transcripts and the participants written statements was conducted to identify the underlying ideologies of the participants. The study yielded three …
Indigenous Knowledge, Land, History, And Health: The Construction Of Diabetes On The White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation, Tennille Marley
Indigenous Knowledge, Land, History, And Health: The Construction Of Diabetes On The White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation, Tennille Marley
Sociology ETDs
American Indians and Alaska Natives are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and are more likely than the general population to suffer from diabetes-related complications. This study attempts to clarify the relationships between indigenous knowledge, land, local history/historical trauma, and diabetes on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation, using place' as an anchoring concept. The concept of place is largely absent in sociological literature, and a growing number of researchers argue that place should be central to sociology. Further, many researchers argue that place and context matter for health and are necessary for a deeper understanding of …

How To Get Rid Of Thunder Thighs, Helena E. Yang
How To Get Rid Of Thunder Thighs, Helena E. Yang
SURGE
I appreciate the insightful and important things your muffin top has to say to me, but my thunder thighs still think they’re fat.
I’m overweight (sometimes).
On a BMI scale, I fluctuate in and out of the dreaded “overweight” category. While I acknowledge that the BMI scale has its flaws, it was designed to be a quick approximation of weight to height; it is not designed to be a scientific test. Sometimes I tell myself I am super muscular and the scale doesn’t apply to me, but it’s actually not true. [excerpt]
