Compassion Fatigue: Prevalence Among Nurses At A Midwest Pediatric Hospital, Branch Carole Aug 2013

Compassion Fatigue: Prevalence Among Nurses At A Midwest Pediatric Hospital, Branch Carole

Dissertations

Compassion fatigue is a term used to describe the unique stressors affecting people in care-giving professions (Joinson in 1992). For nurses, the impact of compassion fatigue may result in stress-related symptoms, job dissatisfaction, decreased productivity, patient satisfaction, safety issues, and job turnover. The purposes of this non-experimental descriptive survey using electronic distribution to collect data were to identify the prevalence of compassion fatigue composed of burnout and secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction among nurses and nursing staff who deliver direct patient care at the hospital and the relationship between demographic variables (age, work category, level of education, work experience) …

Metabolomics Investigation Of Glyceollins By On-Line Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry And Fungal Metabolite Identification By Thermal Desorption Analysis Coupled With Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Syeda Quadri

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Metabolomics is an emerging field that entails the detailed characterization of the ensemble of metabolites produced by living organisms; subfields include drug metabolism and natural environmental toxin production. The first part of the dissertation pursued metabolism of glyceollins, i.e., isoflavones produced by soybeans, that are potential cancer therapy agents. In vivo glyceollin metabolites produced in rats were investigated by on-line Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry. An odd-electron fragment ion at m/z 148, formed in violation of the even-electron rule, and diagnostic of the glyceollin backbone, was discovered. Based on this finding, a negative mode precursor ion scanning method was …

An Assessment Of Worldview-2 Imagery For The Classification Of A Mixed Deciduous Forest, Nahid Carter Aug 2013

An Assessment Of Worldview-2 Imagery For The Classification Of A Mixed Deciduous Forest, Nahid Carter

Theses

Remote sensing provides a variety of methods for classifying forest communities and can be a valuable tool for the impact assessment of invasive species. The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) infestation of ash trees (Fraxinus) in the United States has resulted in the mortality of large stands of ash throughout the Northeast. This study assessed the suitability of multi-temporal Worldview-2 multispectral satellite imagery for classifying a mixed deciduous forest in Upstate New York. Training sites were collected using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, with each training site consisting of a single tree of a corresponding class. Six classes were …

Confocal Microscopy Study Of The Embryonic Development Of The Viviparous Nemertean Prosorhochmus Americanus Reveals Larval Features Supporting Indirect Development In Hoplonemerteans, S Tyler Spindle Aug 2013

Confocal Microscopy Study Of The Embryonic Development Of The Viviparous Nemertean Prosorhochmus Americanus Reveals Larval Features Supporting Indirect Development In Hoplonemerteans, S Tyler Spindle

Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies of hoplonenemertean planuliform larvae have clarified their development and provided insight into larval evolution within the phylum. However, an assessment of viviparous development using modern techniques is lacking. To help facilitate a comprehensive comparative evaluation of developmental diversity within hoplonemerteans, we have conducted a confocal laser scanning microscopy investigation of the development in Prosorhochmus americanus, one of the few viviparous hoplonemertean species. Phalloidin staining provides evidence of a modified transitory larval epidermis, and reveals that the foregut, midgut, proboscis, central nervous system, and body wall musculature form early in development, consistent with observations for planktonic and encapsulated hoplonemertean …

Resistance Training In Untrained Individuals: Impact Of Light Repetition Ranges On Improvements In Fat Free Mass, Courtenay D. Lewis Aug 2013

Resistance Training In Untrained Individuals: Impact Of Light Repetition Ranges On Improvements In Fat Free Mass, Courtenay D. Lewis

Doctoral Dissertations

The hypertrophy range (8-12 repetitions at 70-85% one-repetition maximum (1RM)) has long been considered the optimal resistance training protocol for the development of fat-free mass (FFM). Recent investigations have hypothesized that lighter repetition zones (over 12 repetitions and less than 67% 1RM) are as effective as heavier loads for the development of FFM. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether local muscular endurance workouts could sustain and further increase FFM following a program emphasizing the hypertrophy zone. Methods: Healthy, untrained subjects (36 men and 27 women, ages 23 ± 3) completed 96 resistance training workouts. After baseline …

Hiv Care Utilization: A Theory-Based Approach To Retention In Care, Laramie Smith Aug 2013

Hiv Care Utilization: A Theory-Based Approach To Retention In Care, Laramie Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

Maintaining HIV care attendance with some degree of regularity (i.e., retention in HIV care) is critical to attain optimal health outcomes for people living with HIV (PLWH) and HIV-affected communities. In the United States, approximately 50% of all PLWH who know their status are inadequately retained in HIV care once care has been initiated. Poor retention in HIV care is associated with deceased odds of viral suppression (resulting in increased risk of transmission to HIV-negative others), more rapid progression to an AIDS diagnosis, and increased odds of death. As such promoting patients’ retention in HIV care is a critical need …

Habitual Chocolate Consumption May Increase Body Weight In A Dose-Response Manner, James A. Greenberg, Brian Buijsse Aug 2013

Habitual Chocolate Consumption May Increase Body Weight In A Dose-Response Manner, James A. Greenberg, Brian Buijsse

Publications and Research

Objective Habitual chocolate intake was recently found to be associated with lower body weight in three cross-sectional epidemiological studies. Our objective was to assess whether these cross-sectional results hold up in a more rigorous prospective analysis. Methods We used data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities cohort. Usual dietary intake was assessed by questionnaire at baseline (1987–98), and after six years. Participants reported usual chocolate intake as the frequency of eating a 1-oz (∼28 g) serving. Body weight and height were measured at the two visits. Missing data were replaced by multiple imputation. Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate …

Study Of Health And Activity In Preschool Environments (Shapes): Study Protocol For A Randomized Trial Evaluating A Multi-Component Physical Activity Intervention In Preschool Children, Karin A. Pfeiffer, Ruth P. Saunders, William H. Brown, Marsha Dowda, Cheryl L. Addy, Russell R. Pate

Faculty Publications

Background: Physical inactivity is a recognized public health concern. Inadequate proportions of children in the U.S, including those of preschool age, are meeting physical activity recommendations. In response to low numbers of preschool children attaining appropriate physical activity levels, combined with the large number of young children who attend preschool, researchers have identified the need to devise interventions to increase physical activity at preschools. However, few multi-component interventions to increase physical activity in preschool children exist. The aims of this study were to observe the effects of a multi-component intervention on physical activity, sedentary behavior, and physical activity energy expenditure …

The Effect Of Heart Failure Education On Reducing Readmissions, Mayola Lara Villarruel Aug 2013

The Effect Of Heart Failure Education On Reducing Readmissions, Mayola Lara Villarruel

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Management of heart failure is a significant financial challenge for the health care industry, costing approximately $33.2 billion annually. Common reasons for preventable heart failure readmissions include inadequate discharge education and lack of self-care and health management activities. Education at discharge is a vital component of improving heart failure outcomes. Following a review of the literature, high quality evidence supports that heart failure education should focus on medication adherence, sodium and fluid restriction, daily weights, activity tolerance, identification of deteriorating signs and symptoms of heart failure, and smoking cessation. The purpose of this EBP project was to reduce heart failure …

Invisible Women: Examining The Political, Economic, Cultural, And Social Factors That Lead To Human Trafficking And Sex Slavery Of Young Girls And Women, Robyn L. White Aug 2013

Invisible Women: Examining The Political, Economic, Cultural, And Social Factors That Lead To Human Trafficking And Sex Slavery Of Young Girls And Women, Robyn L. White

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis employs the most recent and best available data on human trafficking, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s Trafficking in Persons Global Report 2006, as well as nine independent variables to determine what their effects are on countries’ volumes of human trafficking outflows. By completing a cross-sectional analysis via an OLS regression, I found statistically significant support for three factors that I hypothesize lead to greater outflows of human trafficking. My findings suggest that countries that are less corrupt, have more seats in parliament held by women, and score higher on Cho, Dreher, and Neumayer’s Anti-Trafficking Policy …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The soybean cyst nematode (SCN; Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) is the most economically important pathogen of soybean in the U.S. The effect of annual corn rotation, soil properties, weather, and agronomic factors on SCN population densities was quantified in 45 fields in Nebraska over three years. SCN population densities (eggs/100 cm3 of soil) in each field were determined before (Pi) and after (Pf) annual corn rotation. Average SCN population density reduction was 50.62%. Multivariate analysis was used to describe the relationship of soil texture (% of sand, silt, and clay), Pi, and Pf. Two principal components explained 92% of the …

Effect Of Leaf Type And Pesticide Exposure On Abundance Of Bacterial Taxa In Mosquito Larval Habitats, Ephantus J. Muturi, Benedict O. Orindi, Chang Hyun Kim Aug 2013

Effect Of Leaf Type And Pesticide Exposure On Abundance Of Bacterial Taxa In Mosquito Larval Habitats, Ephantus J. Muturi, Benedict O. Orindi, Chang Hyun Kim

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Lentic freshwater systems including those inhabited by aquatic stages of mosquitoes derive most of their carbon inputs from terrestrial organic matter mainly leaf litter. The leaf litter is colonized by microbial communities that provide the resource base for mosquito larvae. While the microbial biomass associated with different leaf species in container aquatic habitats is well documented, the taxonomic composition of these microbes and their response to common environmental stressors is poorly understood. We used indoor aquatic microcosms to determine the abundances of major taxonomic groups of bacteria in leaf litters from seven plant species and their responses to low concentrations …

Use Of Metarhizium Anisopliae Chitinase Genes For Genotyping And Virulence Characterization, Saliou Niassy, Sevgan Subramanian, Sunday Ekesi, Joel L. Bargul, Jandouwe Villinger, Nguya K. Maniania

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Virulence is the primary factor used for selection of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) for development as biopesticides. To understand the genetic mechanisms underlying differences in virulence of fungal isolates on various arthropod pests, we compared the chitinase genes, chi2 and chi4, of 8 isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae. The clustering of the isolates showed various groups depending on their virulence. However, the analysis of their chitinase DNA sequences chi2 and chi4 did not reveal major divergences. Although their protein translates have been implicated in fungal virulence, the predicted protein structure of chi2 was identical for all isolates. Despite the critical role of …

Aspergillosis Of Pseudopterogorgia Americana: Increased Host Range Of Aspergillus Sydowii From The Wider Caribbean, Garriet W. Smith Aug 2013

Aspergillosis Of Pseudopterogorgia Americana: Increased Host Range Of Aspergillus Sydowii From The Wider Caribbean, Garriet W. Smith

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Reports of gorgonian diseases have been increasing in the past few years, but, with the exception of Gorgonia spp., the etiological agents responsible are generally unknown. In the summer of 1999, populations of Pseudopterogorgia americana were observed with lesions and galls, somewhat similar to Aspergillus sydowii infections on Gorgonia ventalina, in Bermuda. Surveys of three sites were made, repeated the following two years, and compared with sites in the Bahamas. Microscopic observations of affected tissue and subsequent pure culture studies indicated the pathogen was also A. sydowii. Over half of the colonies at the Bahamas site were affected, but …
