Stress is associated with type 2 diabetes and acute stress could alter glycemic response. Physiological effects of cold presser stress (CPS: n=40) and control (no CPS; n=43) on g!ycemic and cardiovascular response to a 50 gram oral glucose tolerance test drink (OGTT) was examined in healthy humans (18±10 years). CPS consisted of three 30-second ice bath immersions of the left arm 10 min pre-OGTT (0 min). then 10 and 20 minutes post-OGTT. Blood glucose for control and CPS at -15. 0, 30, 60, 120 min was 89. 7±9. 0. 91. 0±8. 7, 154. 2±21. 5, 138. 8±32. 7, 96. 4±19. …

Open Innovation In Plant Genetic Resources For Food And Agriculture, Chidi Oguamanam
Open Innovation In Plant Genetic Resources For Food And Agriculture, Chidi Oguamanam
Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property
Contemporary global order for the promotion of innovation exaggerates the role of intellectual property (IP) as a closed proprietary model of knowledge production and protection. Partly as a boomerang effect of that order or partly as a coincidence of the phenomenal rise in the information and communication technologies or both, there has been increased gravitation toward open, collaborative, shared, communal and interdependent models of innovation. This trend is typified by the rise of open software movement and cognate endeavours. The article attempts to transpose the open innovation dynamic to the context of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGFA); …

Purpose: Noninfectious comorbidities such as cardiovascular diseases have become increasingly prevalent and occur earlier in life in persons with HIV infection. Despite the emerging body of literature linking environmental exposures to chronic disease outcomes in the general population, the impacts of environmental exposures have received little attention in HIV-infected population. The aim of this study is to investigate whether individuals living with HIV have elevated prevalence of heavy metals compared to non-HIV infected individuals in United States.
Methods: We used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2010 to compare exposures to heavy metals including cadmium, lead, and total …

Condition and trend Nutrients, such as phosphorus (P), are essential for profitable agriculture in the south-west of WA; however, excess P – more than is required for optimal production – is stored in many agricultural soils. On average, pasture soils and arable soils contain 1.3 times and 1.6 times respectively, as much P as is required for optimal production. Production in P-enriched soils is more likely to be constrained by soil acidity (50–60% of pasture and arable soils), potassium (K) (50% of pasture soils and less than 10% of arable soils), and sulphur (S) (30% of pasture soils). Management implications …

Impact Of Postpartum Anxiety And Depression On Child’S Mental Development From Two Peri-Urban Communities Of Karachi, Pakistan: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Niloufer Sultan Ali, Sadia Mahmud, Asia Khan, Badar Sabir Ali
Department of Family Medicine
Background
Postpartum anxiety and depression has detrimental effects on the overall mental development of children. This study aims to assess the impact of postpartum anxiety and depression on children’s mental development on all sub-scales in a Pakistani population.
Methods
A quasi-experimental study was conducted in two peri-urban communities of Karachi, a mega city of Pakistan, to assess the impact of postpartum anxiety and depression on children’s growth and mental development. A total of 420 women were enrolled, who had given consent out of 651 pregnant women identified, during February 2004 to December 2005. Data for socio-demographic, home environment and family …

Goal-Setting, Self-Monitoring, And Teacher-Student Conferences And The Relationship With Overall School Climate And Student Academic Achievement, Paul Thomas Godwin
Dissertations
Programs and reforms have come and gone in the educational arena with little impact on student performance. The problem at the school of study was the students’ perception of their sense of belonging and the sense of the school as a community and the students’ academic performance did not show adequate growth. The study took place in a mid-western suburban elementary school serving 440 students kindergarten through fifth grade. The significance of the study was to examine the impact of a Goal-Setting Worksheet, along with regular teacher-student conferences, as a strategy to improve the overall school climate and academic achievement …

Synthesis, Structural Studies Of Some New Transition Metals Complexes Of Semicarbazide Hydro Chloride Schiff Base Derivatives, Abbas Asalih Al-Hamdani, Muhannd A Mahmoud, Shaimaa.R Bakir
Baghdad Science Journal
A new series of transition metal complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Fe(III) have been synthesized from the Schiff base (L1) and (L2) derived from Semicarbazide hydro chloride and 4-chlorobenzaldehyde or 4-bromobenzaldehyde. The structural features have been arrived from their elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductivity, IR, UV-Vis. and 1H NMR spectral studies. The data show that the complexes have composition of [M(L)2](NO3)2 and [Fe(L)2 (NO3)2](NO3) where the M=Co(II),Ni(II) and Cu(II) ;L=L1and L2 type. The magnetic susceptibility and UV-Vis spectral data of the complexes suggest a square planer geometry for Co(II) and Cu(II) but Fe(III) octahedral geometry and Ni(II) tetrahedral …

The genetic improvement of N (EUN) and P (EUP) use efficiency is a less expensive and more sustainable way to obtain satisfactory grain yields. However, the lack of knowledge about the relationship among the determinant characters of nutrient use efficiency has made the use of early and indirect selection difficult. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the relationship among the determinant characters of nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiency in maize. In this study, 14 lines and 39 single-cross hybrids were tested in two experiments with low and high N and P availability, in a completely randomized simple …
